The elderly woman of the oil lamp

En Sevilla, cuando reinaba el rey “justiciero” Don Pedro I de Castilla, dos caballeros lucharon atravesando uno de ellos el pecho de su rival.

In Seville, in the reign of the king, peace keeper, Don Pedro I of Castille, two knights fought, and one stabbed his rival´s chest.

El ruido de la lucha atrajo a una vieja mujer, que se asomó a su ventana con la luz de un candil. La anciana quedó horrorizada.

The noise of the fight attracted an elderly woman who looked out her window with the light of an oil lamp. The old lady was horrified.

El alcalde de Sevilla se presentó ante el rey, y este le ordenó que averiguara quién fue el asesino.

The mayor of Seville came before the king and he ordered him to find out who is the murderer.

En el lugar de los hechos encontraron un candil, y detuvieron y torturaron a la vieja que vivía en la calle donde se produjo el asesinato. La anciana presenció los hechos, pero no quería delatar al asesino.

In the scene he found an oil lamp and detained and tortured the elderly woman, who was living on the street where the murder took place. The old woman witnessed the events but she didn´t want to betray the murderer.

Al final, confesó que el asesino había sido el rey. El rey lo admitió; pero afirmó que al rey solo Dios puede juzgarle. Don Pedro recompensó a la anciana con cien monedas de oro.

Finally, she confesed that the murderer was the king. The king admitted it, but he said only God can judge him. Don Pedro rewarded the elderly woman with 100 gold coins.

Por lo tanto, el rey Pedro I, haciendo honor a su fama de justiciero, ordenó colocar una efigie de la cabeza real donde se produjo el trágico asesinato.

King Pedro I, true to his reputation as peace keeper; he orderered to place an effigy of the king´s head where the tragic murder took place.
