DESCRIPTION OF THE WALK

The walk starts off in Deià from the bus stop in Arxiduc Lluís Salvador street (the road to Sóller), which is easily distinguishable by its triangular roof. Ex-actly opposite is Es Porxo street, which you walk along as far as the cross-roads. The right hand turning goes up to the church of Sant Joan, but you continue down the steps of the d’en Topa slope, which leads you to a small bridge over the Es Racó mountain stream.

Opposite is the reservoir in the form of a drop tower of the Molí de Can Carindo watermill, which was the last working mill in the village, next to the museum founded by William Waldren with his discoveries from Mal-lorca’s prehistory.

Walk on down along the bank of the watercourse with the Es Siquió wash-house on the other side, and a little further on, on the first bend, is the Can Boi mountain refuge, part of the chain run by the Consell de Mallorca.

This route, partly through a built-up area, provides a look at architec-ture typical of the Sierra de Tra-muntana mountain range. Tradi-tional village houses, mills, wash-houses, terraces and paths are laid out one after the other until one reaches Cala Deià, which, adorned with old fishermen’s boathouses and slipways, offers the visitor a refreshing dip in the summer and, what is more, delightful scenery throughout the whole of the year.

Now, walk through the Es Clot dis-trict, with houses that are as simple as they are old, where you can see the basin of the Es Molí spring; nearby is the irrigation channel that supplies a washhouse further down-stream and used to power up to four watermills. A little later, you will come to the reservoir of one of these mills, just at the beginning of the Es Ribassos path.

Now carry on along the bank of the Major mountain stream, where back in the thirties there were plans to build a road, a project that was given up after a serious accident in which two workmen were killed.

Cross over a wall, the Can Reboa mountain stream and the irrigation chan-nel, now dried up, of the Es Molí spring and further down your route joins the Sa Pesta path, which the inhabitants of Valldemossa and Sóller are said to have used to avoid the village of Deià in times of plague.

On arriving at the Pont de sa Cala bridge over the Major mountain stream, turn off the Sa Pesta path and continue along the made up lane until you reach the cove of Cala Deià, which was used as a place of refuge by fisher-men, whose huts can still be seen, as well as the remains of the few boat-houses where they would shelter their vessels.

Return along the same path until you reach the Pont de sa Cala bridge, where you continue a few metres along the made up lane until you get to the cobbled path of Sa Vinyeta on your left. This crosses the road twice and then takes you back to the starting point after skirting the terraces of Es Verger and the local primary school.
