w hen speaking of the Trinity, I often have re-

minded people that we can possess only lim-

ited understanding of the Trinity because it is a mys-

tery. That answer feels unsatisfying to many, and I

have to admit that it is. However, I also remind peo-

ple that every person is a mystery. As much as one

may try, even given a lifetime of intimate knowledge

and experience of another person — in marriage for

instance — there are still things that we just do not

know about another. It is that mystery, in part, that

makes relationships with other persons so exciting

and desirable. There is always more to know and,

often, the more you know about a person the greater

a mystery they seem.

This past January 19th, our parish lost one of the great

and beautiful mysteries that has colored the life of Holy

Rosary for decades, Michael T. Bayt. Most of the par-

ish knew Michael, or at least knew who he was. If you

did not, you probably would have recognized him

when you saw him. He was the man who was in charge

of the collection and the entrance bells at the 4:30 Sat-

urday evening Mass, and Michael had Down Syn-

drome. You could see some of the telltale characteris-

tics in some of his physical features, and if you noticed

it you immediately would underestimate him.

I know I did — and not just once. There was (and

this should be no surprise to someone like myself

who preaches and teaches it every time he opens his

mouth about the Trinity) a real and beautiful mystery

to the person, Michael Bayt. He had a clever wit and

humor that I am quite certain consciously took ad-

vantage of the fact that people would underestimate

him. He had a marvelous ability to take underestima-

tion of himself and turn it back on you in a discus-

sion. His siblings related countless stories of being

outmaneuvered by Michael in discussions, something

I was all too familiar with in my attempts to banish

his fountain Pepsi

from church.

There are in many

countries and places

these days attempts

to eliminate Down

Syndrome. What this

actually means is the

elimination of peo-

ple with Down Syn-

drome. This geno-

cide is usually moti-

vated by some sort

of pride and selfish-

ness masked in a

veneer of humani-

tarianism. Pray for

those people and

places. They are stealing from themselves the privi-

lege of knowing and loving some of the more beauti-

ful mysteries that God has brought into this world.

Michael was warm and affectionate. He was devout

and always insisted on an extra “special blessing” for

himself after Mass. He was dedicated to the jobs he

filled at the parish. And, as I learned from his friends

and family at his funeral services, he was much

more. He was to me, and to the parish, and I know to

his family, a real blessing. I am a better man for hav-

ing known him. I pray that I am worthy to know

more of the mystery of Michael Bayt in the life to

come.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord and let the Per-

petual Light shine upon him.

May he rest in peace. Amen.

Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor

A great and beautiful mystery

Michael T. Bayt (1965-2019)

A t times it is difficult to find a reason for what appears only as an obstacle to be overcome or

even as pain — physical or emotional — to be endured. Yet faith and understanding help us to

see a horizon beyond our own selves in order to imagine life as God does. God’s unconditional love,

which gives life to every human individual, points to a meaning and purpose for all human life. His

is a saving love (cf. Jn 12:32). As Christians profess, it is through the Cross that Jesus in fact draws us

into eternal life, and in so doing indicates to us the way ahead — the way of hope which guides

every step we take along the way, so that we too become bearers of that hope and charity for others. — Pope Benedict XVI, address on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, May 8, 2009

Report to parishioners from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Santo Rosario Conference

F or the fiscal year from Oct. 1, 2017, through

Sept. 30, 2018, the Santo Rosario Conference

of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul helped 104

families comprising 319 people. These clients were

visited in their homes, where basic needs were as-

sessed.

While visiting clients, mem-

bers of SVdP listen to their

concerns and provide informa-

tion about the SVdP ware-

house. They give them vouch-

ers so that they can pick up

needed items at the warehouse

distribution center, such as clothing, bedding, lin-

ens, kitchen items, furniture, lamps, etc.

Thanks to the generous donations of our parish-

ioners, Santo Rosario Conference distributed

$15,384 to clients in the form of rent and utility

assistance, gasoline cards, bus cards, appliances

and other needed items not available at the ware-

house.

SVdP members also offer the clients information

regarding other types of free agencies, such as food

pantries and legal services; provide Bibles to those

who request them; offer information about the

Catholic Church; invite them to attend Mass; and,

before leaving their homes, pray with them.

For more information about volunteering with

SVdP or making donations, contact Joseph Mellen-

tine at [email protected].

We should love the poor with peculiar affection,

beholding in them the very person of Christ, and

showing them the same consideration that He did.
