Cuándo es la hora exacta

When it’s the exact hour:

Use “Son las” plus the # for the hour

Ejemplo:

3:00 – Son las tres.

7:00 – Son las siete.

When it’s 1:00, Use “Es la” and the #.

Ejemplo:

1:00 – Es la una.

If it’s midnightEs medianoche. It’s midnight.

If it’s noon Es mediodía. It’s noon.

If it’s midnight or noon: You can also say “Son las doce.”

A.M. / P.M.

A.M. = de la mañana P.M. = de la tarde

de la noche

When it’s after the hour

Say “Son las” or “Es la”, the hour,then “y” and the # for the minutes:

Ejemplos:

5:10: Son las cinco y diez.

1:05: ____ _____ una y cinco.

Quarter after:

Instead of using the number “15” (quince)

use “cuarto”

Ejemplo:

2:15: Son las dos y cuarto

11:15: Son las once y cuarto

1:15: Es la una y cuarto

Thirty minutes after (half hour)

Instead of using the number “30” (treinta)

Use “media”

Ejemplo:

7:30 Son las _______ ___ _________.

1:30 Es la una y media.

_________ Son las nueve y media.

Method 1: Say the hour “Son las” or “Es la”, the hour, then “y”, then the # of minutes.

Ejemplos:

2:40: Son las dos y cuarenta.

8:50: Son las ocho y cincuenta.

hour Method 2: Say the NEW hour, the hour the time

is going toward “Son las” or “Es la”, then say “menos” and SUBTRACT the number of minutes.

Ejemplo:

2:40 Son las tres menos veinte. (3:00 is the new hour, minus, 20 minutes OR 20 min. to 3:00)

8:50 Son las nueve menos diez. (9:00 is new hour, minus 10 minutes OR 10 to 9.)

12:55: Es la una menos cinco

4:45: Son las cinco menos cuarto.
