We have developed a full annual-cycle conceptual model to capture the threats, drivers of those threats and proposed strategies to reduce the threats.

This model shows only the most highly ranked direct threats to the birds on the breeding range and is based on a relative threat ranking exercise we undertook. The main threats identified were: Adverse forestry practices Land conversion (including oil and gas drilling, mining and quarrying, urban expansion, and agriculture) Climate Change (which impacts the birds through adverse extreme weather, habitat shifting and alteration and prey mismatches) I’d like to highlight that we recognize that some forestry impacts could actually be beneficial for CAWA, and that forest managers are important partners in the maintenance of forested habitat, however, there may be areas where there practices are detrimental and those are what we focus on here. The same could be said for climate change in some cases.

Some of the most important drivers of the top ranked threats included: A lack of Best Management Practices for forest managers It is unclear if forest certification standards are actually successful in managing for CAWA There are inadequate protective measures at the provincial level to protect CAWA habitat and some regulations that encourage or require forestry practices and land conversion that are detrimental to CAWA. There is a large variation in how small woodlot owners operate (I should mention that although the majority of forested land in Canada is publically owned, in the east much of the forest landbase is privately owned). There is a need to enhance the federal and provincial protected areas systems Market incentives that lead to land conversion (e.g., high oil and gas prices, increased profitability of growing livestock feed rather than livestock, etc.)

After identifying the main drivers of the highly ranked threats, we then developed strategies that would help to address those threats. The most highly ranked proposed strategy was to develop and promote forestry best management practices designed to support Canada Warbler conservation. Leveraging existing legal instruments, for example the identification and protection of critical habitat for CAWA under Canada’s Species at Risk Act. We don’t necessarily need to start from scratch, there are some existing opportunities that we can take advantage of. In Canada, almost all of the forestry landbase is certified, therefore if we can develop the appropriate and effective tools to be incorporated into the certification systems we are guaranteed wide implementation. There are some efforts already underway to develop best management practices so we need to continue and build on that momentum.

Geolocators deployed in Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick, New Hampshire, North Carolina There is new research on limiting factors from one of my colleagues which I will highlight at the end of the presentation.


Non-breeding Range


Non-breeding and Migration Habitats • Montane and pre-montane forests with open and closed

canopies, including areas of mature and secondary habitats.

• Non-natural habitat: shade-grown coffee plantations, silvopastoral systems with different successional states, potters with trees and urban gardens.

• Preference for habitats with an arboreal component and the presence of diverse and heterogeneous undergrowth, including a shrub component.

• At migratory stopover sites in Central America: natural forested areas, including secondary and mature forests, with open and closed canopies, dry, wet, gallery and coniferous forests.




Strategies and Opportunities

• Restore Canada Warbler habitat using landscape management tools.

• Establish a lobby group to be involved in planning processes (changes in legislation).

• Promote a citizen science program for Canada Warblers. • Promote best practices and productive techniques in the

development of a sustainable market for CAWA products (incentives).

• Create and use a platform to disseminate results among institutions.

As we went through the process of identifying threats on migration, it became clear that we were dealing with a bit of a black box. However, we do recognize that many of the threats identified on the breeding and non-breeding grounds also apply to the species during migration and will require the application of the same strategies shown earlier. Some threats such as building collisions and cats may be more pronounced on migration than during breeding. There is also a lot of work on migratory connectivity is underway so we will soon be able to start to fill in this black box, but we do recognize that much of what we are proposing could be applied along the migration corridor as well.

Interesting statistic: the breeding range is 7.5 times as large as the non-breeding range (using ebird STEM models). When you consider this and the fact that the boreal forest is really relatively intact, the results are not surprising. This research will help us determine which parts of the conceptual models in the full life-cycle plan to prioritize.
