Students will be able to compare the experiences of Juan Seguinof Texas, Mariano Vallejo of California, and Las Gorras Blancas of New Mexico during the expansion of the United States.
Big Idea: The Latino experience has been full of struggle, determination, and perseverance.
Latinos have a long and rich history in the United States.

Using sentence strips I had the students use the following link to a great interactive timeline (in spanish) that they can use as a preview to the entire Latino Experience.
As the students create their timeline I would say to make them summarize the event and to add an inference about how the event affected the local population.

the first sheet has them identify what these people were doing before the expansion.The second sheet identifies the events, tactics taken against the local population by the expanding Americans.
The third graphic organizer identifies the status of the people after the expansion.
It’s worth to note that the three historical figures reacted differently to the US expansion and were treated differently too.

Los efectos de la Gran Depresión fueron desgar-radores. Por ejemplo, en 1932, ni siquiera una personaestaba empleada en el 28 por ciento de las familias en losEstados Unidos. El desempleo regado por todos ladoscontribuía de gran manera al alto 40 porciento de caídaen el ingreso promedio familiar en los cuatro años de1929-1933. En 1933 casi 13 millones de trabajadores,cerca del 25 por ciento del total de los EE.UU., notenían trabajo.
Sin embargo, las tasas de desempleo, estaban muylejos de ser uniformes por todo el país. Algunos estados– con industrias tales como la producción de radios yaeroplanos – estaban relativamente acomodados, demanera que en un momento, en 1934, había un 33 por-ciento de diferencia entre las tasas de desempleo de losestados con las tasa más altas y las más bajas.
Esta disparidad en la tasa de desempleo hizo que la
gente se empezara a mover por todo el país. The Bracero Program: The bracero program was a series of laws and diplomatic agreements, initiated by an August 1942 exchange of diplomatic notes between the United States and Mexico, for the importation of temporary contract laborers from Mexico to the United States.
1. En grupos pequeños discuten que es inmigración. Que has escuchado sobre la inmigración? Conoces alguien quien es inmigrante?
2. Introduce el programa bracero usando la información del paquete pdf.
3. Cada grupo recibe las fotografias para analizar. Tambien deben tener la hoja de actividad (bracero photograph analysis worksheet)
4. Los grupos deben usar el internet para encontrar las descripciones de cada foto. Ahora se completa la tercera parte del trabajo, comparación.
5. Los grupos conversan sobre su experiencia. Cual fue la evidencia que usaron para analizar las fotos y comparanlo a sus conclusiones.

When his family tried to have him buried in their Texas town, funeral home officials refused to bury him there. Became a national issue and brought civil rights to the forefront. There is a nice video and website called the Longoria affair.
I thought that I had ordered the video but maybe not. I have since sent Lindsey for an order so we’ll see. The website has a lot to read though and a few short videos.

Suggested ProceduresIntroduce the activity objectives to students and then divide the class into five diverse small groups.
Give each group one of the tables or charts from the handout. Ask each small group to review its chart, create a simple statement about the chart’s meaning and then explain it to the whole class.
Share the “Washington Monument” story with students. (See the framework, above.) And ask each small group to come up with one or more ways the data on their charts could be presented creatively. (See the example on p. 11.)
Students can use any kind of art technique for which there are supplies—draw, paint, collage, sculpture. Encourage students to be creative.
Allow time for students to conduct necessary research and create their replicas. Display students’ art projects in the classroom, school library or elsewhere, and hold a forum where students explain
the meanings of their artwork to others. Encourage students to ask clarifying questions and provide feedback to each other.
Reconnecting to the FilmBring the activity back to la causa by having students reflect on how the inequities of today mirror those that the farmworkers were working against.
