STANI SLAV PETR OV

S t ani s lav Pet r ov (b. Sept. 9, 1939) was born in Odessa, Ukraine. With a skyrocketing military career bringing him to almost every corner of the former Soviet Union, Petrov ended up as lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defense Forces at age 43.

On Sept. 26, 1983, Petrov was the duty officer at the command center for the Oko nuclear early-warning system when the system reported five nuclear missiles being launched from the United States Petrov judged the report to be a false alarm, and his decision is credited with having prevented an erroneous retaliatory nuclear attack on the United States and its NATO allies that could have resulted in large-scale nuclear war. Investigation later confirmed that the satellite warning system had indeed malfunctioned.

In Jan. 2006, Petrov traveled to the United States, where he was honored with a special World Citizen Award at the United Nations in New York City,"“in recognition of the part he played in averting a catastrophe." For Petrov’s actions in averting a nuclear war, he was also awarded the Dresden Prize on Feb. 17, 2013, in Dresden, Germany. The award included $32,000. On Feb. 24, 2012, he was honored with the 2011 German Media Award, presented to him at a ceremony in Baden-Baden.

Today, Petrov is a retired widower living by himself in a two-bedroom apartment in a Moscow suburb.

“I ’ m n ot a h er o. I w as ju st at th e r ig h t p lace at th e r ig h t tim e. ”

- Stanislav Petrov

KEV I N COSTNER

Kevi n C os t ner (b. Jan. 18, 1955 is an American actor, singer, musician, producer, and director. He has won two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, one Emmy Award, and has been nominated for three BAFTA Awards.

Costner’s appearance in The Man Who Saved the World closed a circle that he himself had instigated. While researching for his role in the 1987 film No Way Out, he came across Petrov’s story on an episode of NBC’s Dateline. This was around the time he was shooting Thirteen Days, a film based on the Cuban missile crisis, which brought the U.S. to the brink of war in an earlier doomsday scenario. Costner was so amazed to be hearing for the first time about someone whose actions likely prevented World War III, he felt compelled to write to Petrov and thank him for his actions. When filmmakers reached out to Costner about meeting with Petrov, the award-winning director was eager to meet, in his words, “the man who saved the world.” During the meeting, Costner was able to express his gratitude to Petrov for his brave decision made at a critical time in the world’s history.

“I often g et th e ch an ce to p lay a h er o. Bu t Stan is lav is a tr u e r eal -l ife h er o. ”

- Kevin Costner
