SOTOGRANDE .- Sotogran-de acoge este fin de semana la XV Regata Copa Rives, prueba puntuable para el Campeonato de Andalucía de Cruceros ORC. El Real Club Marítimo de So-togrande (RCMS) ejerce de anfi-trión y desde este pasado jueves ya está recibiendo a los partici-pantes del que es el evento más importante del año para esta entidad. Está previsto que al-rededor de medio centenar de embarcaciones tomen parte en esta regata que se disputa entre el viernes 15 y el domingo 17 de agosto. Un ejemplo más de la apuesta de Sotogrande por la vela como deporte náutico y como polo de atracción para que el turismo siga creciendo en la urbanización sanroqueña.

Miembros del RCMS estu-vieron durante toda la jorna-da del jueves, desde las diez de la mañana hasta las ocho de la tarde, ocupándose del re-gistro de las participaciones y de entregar a los regatistas las instrucciones de la prueba. El plazo de inscripción se ce-rró el viernes por la mañana y

a continuación se celebró una reunión de patrones previa al arranque de las pruebas, tanto de ORC como de monotipos.

El responsable de Comuni-cación del RCMS, Javier Moli-na, explicó a este periódico que la XV Regata Copa Sotogrande Rives supone lo “máximo” este verano para la entidad ya que vienen embarcaciones de toda Andalucía atraídas por las ca-

racterísticas del campo de rega-tas. A falta del cierre definitivo de las inscripciones, el RCMS barajaba la presencia de unas 50 embarcaciones, una veinte-na de ellas ORC y el resto de J80 y Tom28Max, las dos flotas propias del club. “Estamos muy contentos de poder acoger la XV edición de esta regata pese a los evidentes ajustes que se han tenido que realizar por la

crisis. Los ORC puntúan para el Campeonato de Andalucía. Ade-más, a esta regata viene gente muy aficionada a la náutica de-seosa de navegar por el Estre-cho”, manifestó Molina.

La XV Copa Rives cons-ta de tres días de competición. Cada jornada se disputan tres mangas, de 4 millas náuticas cada una. El campo de rega-tas se monta en función del viento; es decir, si es ponien-te o levante. La previsión del viento para la regata es de le-vante moderado. Las embarca-ciones salen siempre en contra del viento para poder ceñir. Una

vez alcanzan la boya, le dan la vuelta para encarar el jennaker (globo). Cada manga es de dos subidas a la boya y los partici-pantes tendrán que tener muy bien estudiada su estrategia debido a las corrientes en Soto-grande, según señaló Molina.

Dentro de los cruceros ORC hay tres categorías en función de las dimensiones de la em-barcación (de 8 a 10 metros, de 10 a 12, y a partir de 12 me-tros). El vencedor será el que sume más puntos entre las nue-ve mangas. Así, habrá un gana-dor absoluto y luego por clases para compensar las diferencias entre los monotipos y los ORC.

La jornada del sábado 16 es en principio la más atrac-tiva ya que es cuando se cele-brará la regata costera, siempre

que el tiempo lo permita. Si el jurado lo estima oportuno, las embarcaciones zarparán desde Sotogrande hasta cerca del ae-ropuerto de Gibraltar en un tra-zado costero de dificultad pero que saca todo el frenesí náuti-co de las tripulaciones. La re-gata costera sustituye a las tres mangas de la jornada del sába-do en caso de poder celebrarse.

nizada por el RCMS junto a la Federación Andaluza de Vela, la Junta de Andalucía y el Ayunta-miento de San Roque. Según re-coge la Federación Andaluza de Vela en su página web, el Cam-peonato de Andalucía 2014 de Clase Crucero dispone de cua-tro regatas. Hasta la fecha se han disputado dos: la de abril dentro de la XI Semana Náutica Costa del Sol celebrada en Be-nalmádena, y la de la semana pasada dentro de la XVII Rega-ta Juan de la Cosa en el Puer-

to de Santa María. Sotogrande supone así la tercera escala del campeonato, que finalizará la semana que viene con la XXX Semana Náutica de El Puerto de Santa María.

La clasificación del Cam-peonato de Andalucía de Cru-ceros está encabezada, tras las dos primeras regatas, por el yate ‘Hospitales Nisa-Alkevir’, de la tripulación de Ramón Ro-dríguez Morales del Club de Punta Umbría. Le siguen en se-gundo lugar el barco ‘Sea Wolf

of Southampton’, de David La Tham Clocktower del RCMS; el ‘Uxama’ de Pablo Valenzuela Sainz del Real Club Mediterrá-neo Málaga; el ‘Amor Fati’ de Rafael Ruiz Ramírez del Club

Marítimo Benalmádena; y el ‘Titicaca’ de Graham Cox, del RCMS. Una clasificación que demuestra el gran papel que está jugando la flota de Soto-grande, con dos embarcacio-nes entre las cinco primeras, a la espera de la regata que se disputa este fin de semana en casa.

Asimismo, en la flota de monotipos J80, cabe destacar el barco ‘Herbalife’ de los ar-madores Pepequin Orbaneja y Juan Luis Páez -CN Sevilla/Real

Club Marítimo Sotogrande- que este año llegan a Sotogrande con la cabeza muy alta después de hacer un gran tercer puesto en la Copa del Rey.

La XV Copa Rives finaliza este domingo 17. La entrega de premios tendrá lugar ese día por la tarde en Trocadero, en el club de playa del antiguo Cu-curucho. Será el colofón a un fin de semana donde Sotogran-de habrá navegado a toda vela siendo el foco de atención del deporte náutico en Andalucía.

SOTOGRANDE.- This wee-kend, Sotogrande welcomes the 15th Rives Cup, which counts toward the Andalusian Cruiser Championships ORC. The Ro-yal Maritime Club of Sotogran-de (RCMS) shall play host to the competition and has been welcoming participants since last Thursday to the most im-portant event of the year for this association. It is estima-ted that around fifty vessels shall take part in this regatta, which shall be held from Fri-day 15th to Sunday 17th of August. This event further re-inforces Sotogrande´s commit-ment to sailing as a nautical sport and a centre of attraction for tourists, guaranteeing the growth of this residential esta-te of San Roque.

RCMS members were pre-sent all day Thursday, from ten in the morning until eight in the afternoon, recording all donations and issuing sailors with the trial instructions. The registration period closed Fri-day morning and subsequently a meeting was held for owners and coaches before the trials were launched for both ORCs and one-design boats.

The Head of the RCMS Com-munication, Javier Molina, ex-plained to this newspaper that the 15th Sotogrande Rives Cup means a “great deal” to this en-tity this summer as boats are arriving from across the whole of Andalusia, attracted by the standards of this regatta.

Just before the registration period closed, the RCMS esti-mated the presence of around 50 boats, 20 of which ORC and the rest J80 and Tom28Max, the two fleets belonging to the club. “We are delighted to be hosting the 15th edition of this regatta, despite the evident cu-tbacks we have had to make due to the crisis. The ORC counts towards the Andalu-sia Championship. Furthermo-re, many nautical fans visit us with the wish to sail down the Strait”, states Molina.

tion; that is to say if it is wes-terly or easterly. The vessels always sail against the wind so they may beat windward. Once they reach the buoy, they must turn round so they are facing the jennaker (balloon). Each race consists of two laps around the buoy. Participants must prepare their strategies very carefully due to the cu-rrents in Sotogrande, as Moli-na points out.

There are three categories for ORC cruisers depending on the measurements of the ves-sel (from 8-10 metres, 10-12m and from 12 metres and lon-ger). The winner of the regatta shall be the participant with the most points after the nine races. Therefore, there will be an overall winner and a winner per category in order to com-pensate the differences bet-ween the one-design boats and the ORC.

cup when the coast regatta shall be held, weather permit-ting. If the jury considers it to be safe, the vessels shall set sail from Sotogrande and tra-vel up to Gibraltar Airport fo-llowing the difficult coastline, that requires the help of all the crew on board. The coast re-gatta shall substitute the three races to be held on Saturday if they cannot go ahead.

The 15th Rives Cup is or-ganised by the RCMS together wtith the Andalusian Sailing Federation, the Regional Go-

vernment of Andalusia and the Town Council of San Roque. As the Andalusian Saling Fede-ration states on their website, the 2014 Andalusian Champio-nship of the Cruisers Category features 4 regattas. So far, two races have been held: that in April in the 11th Nautical Week of the Costa del Sol, held in Be-nalmádena, and that celebra-ted last week in the 17th Juan de la Cosa Regatta in the Puer-to de Santa Maria. Sotogrande

is the third stage in the cham-pionship which shall come to a conclusion next week with the 30th Nautical Week of the Puerto de Santa Maria.

The yacht ‘Hospitales Nisa-Alkevir’, belonging to the crew Ramón Rodríguez Morales of the Punta Umbría Club Um-bria, currently holds first pla-ce in the Andalusian Crui-ser Championship. In second place is the boat ‘Sea Wolf of Southampton’, belonging to David La Tham Clocktower of the RCMS and is followed by ‘Uxama’ belonging to Pablo Va-lenzuela Sainz of the Royal Me-ditterranean Club of Malaga; ‘Amor Fati’ belonging to Rafael Ruiz Ramírez of the Benalmá-dena Maritime Club and ‘Ti-ticaca’ belonging to Graham Cox, also of the RCMS. The cu-rrent ranking shows the great role the fleet belonging to So-togrande is playing, with two vessels amongst the top five. This weekend they are looking forward to competing in the re-gatta in their home town.

SOTOGRANDE.- Las canchas de Los Pinos de Santa María Polo Club vivieron el pasado martes 12 de agosto una de las mejores tardes de lo que se lle-va del 43 Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo. En liza los dos puestos para la final de la Copa de Plata Silex de alto han-dicap, que finalmente se ad-judicaron los equipos Valien-te y Dos Lunas Espirito Santo tras vencer en sus semifinales a Ellerston y Ayala Polo Team, respectivamente.

La jornada prometía por el nivel de los equipos en contien-da y pronto las gradas se llena-ron de espectadores para dis-frutar del espectáculo pese al calor con viento de poniente.

En la primera semifinal se enfrentaron Valiente y Ellers-ton, dos de los conjuntos con mejor cartel del torneo. El equi-po estadounidense, del pa-trón Bob Jornayvaz, cuenta en sus filas con el mejor jugador del mundo, el argentino Adol-fo Cambiaso, y ya se ha alzado con la Copa de Bronce Isolas este verano en Sotogrande. Va-liente está invicto en este tor-neo gracias al juego que están desplegando los perfectos es-cuderos de Cambiaso, Santi To-rres y Santi Laborde.

Delante tenían al temido conjunto de Ellerston, que cuen-ta con dos jugadores handicap 10 como son los hermanos ar-gentinos Gonzalo y Facundo

Pieres. El equipo australiano llega además a Sotogrande con la responsabilidad de defender título al llevarse el año pasado las Copas de Oro y Plata.

El partido tuvo un inicio vi-brante y a los pocos segundos del primer chukker Facundo Pieres abría el marcador con una jugada individual donde demostró su gran maestría ma-nejando la bocha con su taco. Pero este comienzo no dejó de ser un espejismo porque poco después Valiente le daba la vuelta al marcador y tomaba ventaja, que ya no perdió en todo el encuentro. Los de Cam-biaso controlaron el partido en todo momento tras abrir bre-cha en el segundo chukker, po-niendo al final el marcador en el definitivo 16 a 10.

Contemplar un partido des-de las bambalinas de la cancha de Los Pinos es una experien-cia única. Detrás de una de las porterías cada equipo dispone de su palenque. Asimismo, jun-to a estos campamentos para la ‘batalla’ están las caballeri-zas, donde los cerca de veinte animales por equipo son pre-parados para el encuentro por los petiseros (ayudantes de los jugadores). El ajetreo en esta

zona es similar al del campo de juego. Los petiseros no pa-ran de calentar a los caballos para que estén dispuestos para el partido. Cada jugador cam-bia de animal de cinco a seis veces por encuentro. El caba-llo saliente es refrescado en la cuadra en un continuo ir y ve-nir tras la zona de seguridad del arco.

A la finalización del sexto y último chukker, los cuatro ju-gadores de Valiente no podían ocultar su satisfacción tras des-tronar a Ellerston. La primera en felicitar a Cambiaso fue su

mujer, María Vázquez, que no paró de animar al equipo a pie de cancha. Este matrimonio es muy conocido en Argentina y es habitual verlos en portadas de revistas como Hola. María Váz-quez, modelo y presentadora de televisión, no tuvo reparos du-

rante el encuentro en fotogra-fiarse con fans de su país cuya presencia no pasó desapercibi-da. La foto de los cuatro ven-cedores ponía punto y final al encuentro. La atención se des-viaba entonces a la cancha IV de Los Pinos, donde Ayala Polo Team y Dos Lunas Espirito San-to se jugaban el otro puesto de la final de la Copa de Plata.

La segunda semifinal con-taba con numerosos atractivos, entre ellos la contienda entre los dos equipos españoles de alto handicap. Ayala, que tam-bién juega bajo la bandera fi-

lipina, tiene en sus filas a otro jugador top ten como es el uru-guayo David Pelón Stirling.

Dos Lunas Espirito Santo y Ayala Polo Team ofrecieron un gran espectáculo en un partido que tuvo dos partes totalmente diferenciadas y que se resolvió en un final de infarto.

La primera parte del partido fue para Ayala, del patrón Íñigo Zobel, que comenzó a gran rit-mo y logro sacar una ventaja de cuatro goles en el segundo chukker (8-4) y de siete goles en el tercero (12-5).

dido en esta cancha de Los Pi-nos y que se iba a reeditar la fi-nal de la Copa de Bronce, pero en la segunda parte del partido comenzó la gran remontada del equipo Dos Lunas, que integran Luis Domecq, Pascual Sainz de Vicuña, Martín Iturraspe y Agustín García Grossi.

Con un gran polo y apro-vechando el bajón en el juego de Ayala, Dos Lunas fue recor-tando distancia en el marcador hasta ponerse un gol por deba-jo (13-14) en el quinto chukker.

En los últimos siete minu-tos, y con un gran Agustín Gar-

cía Grossi, Dos Lunas Espiri-to Santo se llevó el partido y el pase a la final por 16-15. Ayer viernes 15 de agosto, al cierre de esta edición, Valiente y Dos Lunas Espirito Santo disputa-ban la gran final de la Copa de Plata Silex de alto handicap.

SOTOGRANDE.- Last Tuesday the 12th of August, the Los Pi-nos Courts of the Santa Maria Polo Club experienced one of the best afternoons of polo ever in this year’s 43rd Land Ro-ver International Polo Tourna-ment. Two places for the final of the high handicap Silex Silver Cup were at stake, which finally went to the teams of Valiente and Dos Lunas Espirito Santo after overcoming Ellerston and Ayala Polo Team respectively in their semi-final matches.

The day looked promising thanks to the high level of the teams and the stands quickly filled up with spectators read to enjoy the show, despite the heat of the westerly winds.

In the first of the semi-fi-nals, Valiente and Ellerston, two of the teams with the best reputation of the whole tour-nament, came up against each other. The American team be-longing to Bob Jornayvaz had the best polo player in the world in its ranks, the Argenti-nean Adolfo Cambiaso, who has already walked away with the Bronze Isolas Cup this summer in Sotogrande. Valiente remains undefeated in this tournament thanks to the defending skills of Cambiaso, Santi Torres and Santi Laborde.

Faced with the feared Ellers-ton team, featuring two players of handicap 10 known as the Argentinean brothers Gonzalo

and Facundo Pieres. The Aus-tralian team arrived at Soto-grande with the responsibili-ty of defending their title on their shoulders, as they were last year’s winners of the Gold and Silver Cups.

The game got off to a live-ly start and within a matter of seconds into the first chukker, Facundo Pieres got the Score-board rolling with his indivi-dual skills where he demons-trated his expertise with his mallet. Yet the early celebratio-ns on the part of Ellerston were short lived as Valiente soon tur-ned the scoreboard around and took the advantage, not losing everything in their encounter. Cambiaso’s team took control of the game just after the se-cond chukker got underway, leaving the final score at a defi-nitive 16-10.

Watching the games from the side-line tents of Los Pi-nos court is a once in a life time opportunity. Behind each one of goal posts, the fields for each of the teams can be found. Likewise, these areas are home to the stables, where around twenty animals per team are prepared for the upcoming ma-tches by their “petiseros” (the

polo player´s horse workers). The hustle and bustle behind the scenes is not unlike that on the pitch. The horse workers ensure that the horses are fu-lly warmed up and prepared for the game. Each player chan-ges horse around five or six ti-mes per game. Horses are then cooled down in the stables and come and go via the safety area.

After the sixth and final chukker came to an end, the four Valiente players could not hide their satisfaction after de-feating Ellerston. The first to

congratulate Cambiaso was his wife María Vázquez, who had supported her husband’s team from the side lines with much enthusiasm. This couple is very famous in Argentina and it is not uncommon to see them on

the front pages of magazines such as Hola. María Vázquez, a model and TV presenter, whose presence at the tournament did certainly not go unnoticed, had no qualms about meeting the fans and having her photogra-ph taken.

A photograph of the four winners brought the semi-fi-nal to a fantastic close, allo-wing the attention to divert to Los Pinos Court IV, where Ayala Polo Team and Dos Lunas Espi-rito Santo played for the other place in the Silver Cup final.

The second semi-final was filled with several exciting mo-ments, amongst which the dis-pute between the two high handicap Spanish teams was a highlight. Ayala, which also plays under the Philippine flag, also has a top ten player amongst its ranks; David Pelón Stirling.

The first part of the game went in the favour of Alaya, of the coach Íñigo Zobel, when the team got off to a great start ta-king the lead by four goals in the second chukker (8-4) and seven in the third (12-4).

It seemed as though the ma-tch had already been sold at Los Pinos court and that the fi-nal of the Bronze Cup would repeat itself, but in the second half of the match the Dos Lu-nas team staged a great come-back thanks to its players Luis Domecq, Pascual Sainz de Vicu-

In the last seven minutes, with the great Agustín García Grossi, Dos Lunas Espirito San-to stole the match and passed through to the final round win-ning 16-15. Yesterday, Friday the 15th of August, this edition came to a great close with Va-liente and Dos Lunas Espirito Santo fighting it out in the final of the Silex Silver Cup in the high handicap category at the Santa Maria Polo Club.

SOTOGRANDE.- Equus se con-sagró el pasado jueves 14 de agosto como campeón de la Copa de Plata Casablanca de mediano handicap tras vencer en la final a Seven Sevens por 10 a 9 en un encuentro bastante disputado.

Los dos equipos jugaron un gran partido en busca del se-gundo trofeo de la temporada del 43º Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo que organi-za Santa María Polo Club.

El poderoso cuarteto del

equipo alemán Equus, que inte-gran Peter Silling, Juan Britos, James Beim y Hugo Lewis, rati-ficó el gran nivel que viene de-mostrando en la temporada al llevarse el la Copa Casablanca frente al conjunto ruso.

Equus y Seven Sevens pu-dieron quitarse el mal sabor de boca al llegar a la final, después de que ambos cayeran en semi-

finales en la Copa de Bronce. Fi-nalmente, Equus fue el que se llevó el trofeo. James Beim no ocultó su satisfacción tras el encuentro: “Vinimos a tratar de llevarnos cualquiera de las dos copas (Plata y Oro) y queríamos una, y eso te quita presión, así que estamos verdaderamente contentos. Seven Sevens ha es-tado fantástico. Incluso, hasta

el último segundo, no sabíamos lo que iba a pasar”.

Previo a la final se disputó la Copa Subsidiaria de mediano handicap, que tuvo como ven-cedor a Mahra Esperanza tras vencer a Leones (ganador de la Copa de Bronce) por 13 a 7.

Por otra parte, la Copa de Plata de bajo handicap ya cono-ce a sus finalistas. Serdeñola y

Huntsman jugarán el sábado 16 de agosto en Puente de Hierro el segundo trofeo de la tempo-rada en este nivel.

En las semifinales, Serdeño-la venció a Silex por 7 a 6.5 al tiempo que Huntsman (ganador de la Copa de Bronce de bajo handicap) hizo lo propio con Valdeparras-Marqués de Torne-ros por 9 a 7.

SOTOGRANDE.- Equus was consecrated on Thursday 14th August as the champion of the Casablanca Silver Cup of me-dium handicap after winning the final to Seven Sevens by 10-9 in a fairly fought match at So-togrande.

The two teams played a great game in search of the se-cond trophy of the summer sea-son of the 43rd Land Rover In-ternational Polo Tournament organized by Santa Maria Polo Club.

The powerful German team Equus quartet, comprising Pe-ter Silling, Juan Britos, James Beim and Hugo Lewis, confir-med the high level it has recor-ded in the season to win the Casablanca Cup to the Russian side.

Equus and Seven Sevens could remove the bad taste to get to the end, after both fell in

the semi-finals in the Bronze Cup of medium handicap. Fina-lly, Equus won the Casablanca Silver Cup.

James Beim not hide his sa-tisfaction after the game: “We came to try to take any of the two cups (Silver and Gold) and wanted one, and that takes the pressure off you, so we’re really happy. Seven Sevens has been

fantastic. Even until the last se-cond, did not know what was going to happen“.

Before, the Subsidiary Cup final of medium handicap was won by Mahra Esperanza af-ter beating Lions (winner of the Bronze Cup of this category) by 13-7.

Moreover, the Silver Cup low handicap already knows his fi-

nalists. Huntsman and Serde-ñola will play on Saturday 16th August in Iron Bridge court the second trophy of the season at this level.

SOTOGRANDE.- Miles de per-sonas visitan cada año las can-chas del Santa María Polo Club con motivo del Torneo Interna-cional Land Rover de Polo. Pero solo unos cuantos tienen posi-bilidad de visitar las cuadras, el lugar donde descansan, co-men y se recuperan los más de 1.200 caballos que este año han llegado para conseguir uno de los trofeos que están en liza.

A estos animales solo se les ve en el campo, no alzan las co-pas, pero deberían, pues for-man parte fundamental del jue-go junto con el polista.

En las cuadras de Puente de Hierro, propiedad del San-ta María Polo Club, nos recibe Gabriel Gómez, responsable de que todo lo que ocurra en este bonito y silencioso lugar salga a la perfección.

“Ahora tenemos unos 180 caballos. Los equipos que dis-putan el torneo suelen llegar cuando termina la temporada en Inglaterra, a finales de julio. Y si no la han jugado, lo hacen un mes antes”, nos cuenta Ga-briel mientras caminamos por las diferentes instalaciones que albergan las cuadras.

En cada una de ellas pode-mos ver a estos animales, la

mayoría tapados para procu-rarles el mayor confort, o con vendajes en las patas para fa-cilitarles descanso tras el par-tido. Las cuadras que están va-

cías nos dicen que los caballos están en la cancha. “Cada equi-po trae una media de unos 40 caballos, aunque los del Alto Handicap pueden traer hasta

el doble. Y cada polista, si juega en la máxima categoría, puede llevar hasta dos petiseros por caballo”, añade el responsable de Puente de Hierro.

El petisero es, según nos ex-plica, el nombre que recibe la persona encargada de trabajar con el caballo. Es el nexo entre el jugador y el animal, el que controla su salud, su estado general, sus lesiones, y quien comparte el día a día con el ani-mal. Mientras paseamos por los cuadras, Gabriel Gómez saluda a los petiseros que van llegan-do, bromea con ellos recurrien-do al argot argentino, pues to-dos proceden de ese país, y nos informan que los caballos que salieron a jugar están a punto de llegar.

“Son los primeros que em-piezan a trabajar. Sobre las seis de la mañana ya están dando de comer a los caballos. Luego sa-len a entrenarlos, y si hay parti-do los preparan y los trasladan. Ellos lo hacen todo, los llevan a la cancha, los ensillan... El po-lista solo tiene que montar”, co-menta Gabriel Gómez.

Junto a los petiseros, cada equipo trae herradores, veteri-narios y fisioterapeutas, tanto para el caballo como para los jugadores de polo.

y.o . / sOTOgrande.- Gabriel Gó-mez, encargado de las cuadras de Puente de Hierro, creció en una finca y durante toda su vi-da ha estado ligado al mundo del caballo. Conoce a la per-fección a estos animales, y du-rante los tres meses de vera-no trabaja sin descanso. Apro-vechamos su experiencia para que nos cuente cómo son y có-mo viven. “El caballo de com-petición suele pesar entre 400 y 500 kilos. Son cruzados, hijos de caballos ingleses y argenti-nos; y son criados, selecciona-dos y elegidos únicamente para competir en el polo. Su entre-namiento comienza a los seis años, y puede estar en competi-ción, si no tiene ninguna lesión, hasta los 15”, añade.

El entrenamiento y doma de uno de estos animales empieza como todos, iniciando el con-tacto entre el animal y su entre-nador, para luego montarlo. “Lo primero que hacemos es edu-carlo, que nos haga caso, que vaya haciendo lo que queremos. Una vez que conseguimos esto, le enseñamos el taco y la bola, para que se vayan familiarizan-do. Hay algunos animales que

se asustan mucho, pero con el tiempo se van acostumbrando. Cuando logramos esto, empe-zamos a jugar dos contra dos, o tres contra tres, para que el caballo se habitúe al juego”, ex-plica el responsable de las cua-dras propiedad del Santa María Polo Club.

Los mejores caballos están en el Alto Handicap, aunque para llegar a ese nivel deben de haber pasado por el bajo y por el mediano. Sin embargo, que juegue en la máxima categoría no quiere decir que sea el me-jor animal. “No existe el caba-llo perfecto. Es muy difícil que un mismo animal lo tenga todo. Lo fundamental es que sea obe-

diente, manso, y que tenga bue-na musculatura, resistencia y velocidad para competir”, ex-plica Gabriel Gómez.

La exigencia es tan alta que en la máxima categoría cada ju-gador puede llevar hasta 9 ca-ballos. Uno para cada chukker (período de tiempo en que se di-vide un partido de polo) y tres de respuesto.

La temporada de compe-tición dura seis meses al año, entre marzo y octubre aproxi-madamente. El resto del año, estos animales descansan en estas cuadras, el mismo lugar en el que, en estos días, entre-nan duro para salir a la cancha y conseguir ser los mejores.

La exigencia es tan alta que en el Alto Handicap un jugador puede llevar hasta

nueve, uno para cada tiempo, y tres para poder cambiarlos si fuese necesario

SOTOGRANDE.- Thousands of people flock to the Courts of the Santa Maria Polo Club every year to visit the found Land Ro-ver International Polo Tourna-ment. However, only a lucky few get the opportunity to visit the stables, where more 1,200 hor-ses that are ready to compete for one of the trophies at stake, rest, eat and sleep.

These animals found on the playing courts are not awar-ded the winning cups, when we take into account the crucial role they play in the game along with the polo player, perhaps they should.

Gabriel Gómez welcomes us to the Puente de Hierro stables, property of Santa Maria Polo Club. He is in charge ensuring that all the horses that come and go from this peaceful and pleasant place with no proble-ms whatsoever. “We are curren-tly caring for 180 horses. The teams playing in the tourna-ment usually arrive when the season comes to an end in En-gland, around the end of July. Sometimes if they haven’t pla-yed, they come the month befo-re.” Gabriel explains as he leads us around the various parts of the stable.

In each stable, a horse is housed. Their heads are cove-red to ensure their comfort, and they have bandages on their legs so they may rest ea-

sier after every game. When we come across an empty stable, we know the horse must be on the court at that moment. “Each team brings an average of 40

horses with them, yet High Handicap teams can come with more than double this num-ber. Each polo player, if they play in the highest category,

can also bring two horse wor-kers per horse,” the Puente de Hierro Manager adds. “Petisero” (an Argentinean word for Hor-se worker) he explains to us, is the name given to workers responsible for caring for the horse, providing a bridge bet-ween the player and the animal. They manage the animal’s heal-th, their general wellbeing, any injuries and spend days with it. As we wander through the stables, Gabriel Gómez waves at the Horse workers as they arrive, joking with them in Ar-gentinean slang, as they all are natives of said country. They inform us that the horses that were out on the courts should be back any minute. “The “peti-seros” are the first to start work every day. At six o’clock every morning they arrive to feed the horses. Then they normally take them out to train, prepare them for a match and take them to the court. They do everything, make sure they are at the court on time, saddle them…All the polo player has to do is jump on”, states Gabriel Gómez.

Y.O. / sOTOgrande.- Gabriel Gó-mez, the Puente de Hierro Sta-ble Manager, grew up on a farm and has been deeply involved in the equestrian world his en-tire life. He knows these ani-mals to perfection, and for the three months of summer he works non-stop with them. We take advantage of his great ex-perience to ask him about the-se animals and how they live. “Competition horses must weig-ht between 400 and 500 kilos. Some are crosses, the offspring of English and Argentinian hor-ses; and are bred, selected and chosen exclusively to compe-te in the polo world. Their tra-ining normally begins when they are six years old, and they may take part in competitions until they are 15, if they are not injured” he adds.

The training and taming of an animal like this begins like all; initiating contact bet-ween the animal and its trai-ner so they may ride. “The first thing we do is teach the horse to listen to us, to obey us and do what we want it to do. Once we achieve this, we introduce the mallet and ball so they may

get used to it. Some animals are scared at first, but they soon adapt with time. When we get to this stage with the horse, we start to play two on two or three on three so they may be-come familiar with the game” the Puente de Hierro Stable Ma-nager explains.

The very best horses are found in the High Handicap ca-tegory; however most horses at this level have at some po-int played in the low and me-dium categories. However, just because an animal plays in the highest category, does not mean it is the best horse. “There is no such thing as the perfect horse. It is extremely difficult for one

animal to possess all the neces-sary qualities. The main thing is that it is obedient and gentle, has good muscle tone and the resistance and speed to compe-te”, Gabriel Gómez explains.The standards are so high that players in the top category may bring up to 9 horses each; one for each chukker (the period of time which a polo game is divi-ded into) plus three substitutes.The competition season lasts six months. The rest of the year, these animals rest in their sta-bles, the same place in which over these past few days they have been training hard to play on the court and to be the best they can be.

SOTOGRANDE.- Agosto se ani-ma en Sotogrande y el 43 Tor-neo Internacional Land Rover de Polo es, como cada año, pun-to de encuentro para caras co-nocidas. Esta semana numero-sos famosos se han dejado ver por Santa María Polo Club para disfrutar de los partidos de la Copa de Plata Silex.

Cari Lapique y su hija Cari-tina Goyanes visitaron el torneo acompañadas de Carlos Goya-nes. Se acercaron directamen-te desde la playa para ver a un jugador amigo que disputaba un partido por la tarde. Tras el encuentro aprovecharon para realizar diversas comprar por las numerosas tiendas que se disponen con ocasión del tor-neo en la zona de Los Pinos.

La presencia de Amaia Sa-lamanca también despertó una

gran expectación. La joven ac-triz llegó acompañada de su pa-reja y padre de su hijo, Rosauro Varó, y el empresario Javier Hi-dalgo, que les invitó al palco de Air Europa. Allí pudieron dis-frutar de una tarde de polo ro-deados de amigos, en un am-biente relajado y divertido.

Más tarde se unió al grupo Alfonso de Borbón, que no dudó en acercarse a saludarles, apro-vechando que pasa unos días de vacaciones en Sotogrande.

La tarde, animada y bulli-ciosa, atrajo a otros rostros co-nocidos como Verónica Hidal-go, que aprovechó para realizar varias compras en el Polo Sho-pping Village, ya un clásico de las tardes veraniegas. Veróni-ca, que se ha trasladado a vi-vir a Sotogrande, tiene previsto desarrollar su propio negocio. Mientras tanto nos confesó que cada día es más aficionada al

deporte del polo y no deja de perderse muchos de los parti-dos que se celebran a lo largo del verano.

Sonia Ferrer y Álvaro Mu-ñoz Escassi también han esta-do esta semana en Santa María Polo Club. Siempre en actitud muy cariñosa, como una pare-ja fuertemente unida y conso-lidada, Sonia y Álvaro estuvie-ron acompañados por Gonzalo, hermano de Álvaro, y su hijo pequeño, pasando la tarde en-tre sus conocidos y disfrutando de los partidos de semifinales que se estaban celebrando en las canchas.

Álvaro, gran aficionado al polo, que ha practicado durante muchos años, es socio y colabo-rador de una marca de ropa con orígenes en el polo, Valecuatro, y aprovecha cada año el torneo internacional para verse con sus socios y amigos argentinos.

L. V. / sotogrande.- August in Sotogrande is full of life and the 43rd Land Rover Interna-tional Polo Tournament is on-ce again a meeting point for a whole range of familiar faces. This week, numerous famous faces have dropped in at Santa Maria to make the most of the games of the Silex Silver Cup.

Cari Lapique and her daug-hter Caritina Goyanes also visi-ted the tournament along with Carlos Goyanes. They came straight from the beach to see a friend of theirs play in an after-noon polo game. After the mat-ch, they took the chance to go shopping at the various stores that have been set up in light of the tournament in Los Pinos.

Amaia Salamanca´s presen-ce also did not go unnoticed. The young actress came with Rosauro Varó, her partner and the father of her son along with the businessman Javier Hi-dalgo, who invited them to Air Europa box. There, they were able to enjoy a perfect afterno-on of polo surrounded by their friends, in a fun and relaxing environment.

Later on, Alfonso de Borbón joined the group and did not hesitate to greet them all whilst he made the most of his holiday in Sotogrande.

The hustle and bustle of the afternoon also drew the atten-tion of other well-known fa-ces, such as Verónica Hidalgo, who took the opportunity to go shopping in the Polo Shopping Village on said summer after-noon. Véronica, who has now moved to live in Sotogrande has plans to open up her own busi-ness. Meanwhile, she confessed her ever growing love for the sport of polo.

Sonia Ferrer and Álvaro Mu-ñoz Escassi have also been spo-tted at the Santa Maria Polo Club this week. Always a very loving pair, this strongly linked couple were accompanied by Gonzolo, Álvaro´s brother and his younger son, and they spent the afternoon with friends en-joying the semi-final matches held on the courts. Álvaro, a great fan of polo, and a polo player of many years, is a mem-ber and collaborator of the polo brand Valecuatro.

SOTOGRANDE.- El Club E3 Ex-perience, con la colaboración de la Delegación Municipal de Deportes del Ayuntamiento de San Roque, que coordina el te-niente de alcalde Juan Manuel Ordóñez, organizó en la tarde noche del pasado sábado 9 de agosto el I Raid Hípico Luna Llena, una carrera de larga dis-tancia a campo a través que partió y finalizó en la playa de Guadalquitón. La presencia de los jinetes y caballos partici-pantes generó una gran expec-tación entre los abundantes ba-ñistas que se encontraban en esos momentos en la zona.

El teniente de alcalde de-legado del Valle del Guadiaro, Juan Roca, participó en la en-trega de trofeos, y subrayó la importancia que tiene para el municipio de San Roque que se organicen en la zona este tipo de eventos deportivos, porque sirven para ofrecer un atrac-tivo más a los turistas. Tam-bién destacó la peculiaridad de este tipo de competiciones, en la que vence el jinete que con-sigue llegar a la meta primero con su caballo en mejores con-diciones físicas (tras distintos controles veterinarios).

El Raid, también llama-do enduro, es una disciplina ecuestre en la cual se pone a prueba la velocidad, habilidad y la resistencia física y psicoló-gica de caballo y jinete, ya que ambos deben recorrer grandes distancias en un día, a través de los más diversos terrenos y contra el tiempo. La prueba de iniciación disputada en Gua-dalquitón fue de 22 kilómetros.

Para ello el jinete debe te-ner la capacidad de dosificar el esfuerzo de su caballo y llevar un ritmo adecuado durante la prueba, pues al finalizar la ca-rrera los caballos son inspec-cionados por veterinarios, se le toman las pulsaciones y el jine-te podría ser eliminado si está sobre lo permitido.

attractive more tourists. He also highlighted the pecu-liarity of this type of compe-tition, which overcomes the rider gets to the finish line first with his horse in better physical condition (after va-rious veterinary checks).

The Raid, also called en-duro, is an equestrian dis-cipline in which tests the speed, skill and physical and psychological enduran-ce horse and rider, as both must travel great distances in a day, through the various land and against time. The initiation test Guadalquitón played in was 22 kilometers.

SOTOGRANDE.- El bailaor li-nense David Morales actuará el próximo sábado 23 de agos-to en Sotogrande con el objeti-vo de recaudar fondos para la organización de Cáritas.

El espectáculo llevará por nombre ‘Flamenco para el alma’ y está previsto que co-mience a las 21:30 horas. El lugar escogido para esta cita benéfica será el patio de acce-so a la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, un lugar destacado en la urbanización

de lujo del municipio sanro-queño.

Esta será la primera vez que el célebre bailaor actúe en Sotogrande y lo hará por una buena causa. No cabe duda de que el linense, como es habi-tual en todos sus espectácu-los, conseguirá un buen aforo y por lo tanto una recauda-ción cuantiosa para que Cá-ritas pueda seguir llevando a cabo la labor solidaria y des-interesada que realiza a dia-rio en el Campo de Gibraltar, prestando asistencia a las fa-milias que pasan necesidades

en estos días. El precio de la entrada es de 50 euros.

David Morales actuó el pa-sado martes en la coronación de la Feria Real de San Ro-que y, antes, el bailaor estre-nó en Jerez de la Frontera su espectáculo ‘Lorca, muerto de amor’, una obra en la que se mete en la piel del genial poe-ta granadino y narra la última experiencia amorosa del mis-mo. Sotogrande tiene ahora la oportunidad de disfrutar del arte de Morales con este es-pectáculo benéfico en apoyo a la labor de Cáritas.

L. V. / sOTOgrande.- The linense bailaor David Morales will per-form on Saturday 23th August in Sotogrande with the aim of raising funds for the organiza-tion Cáritas.

The show will be called ‘Flamenco for the soul’ and is scheduled to begin at 9:30 pm. The venue for this charity event will be the entrance courtyard to the parish of Our Lady of Mercy, a leading luxury deve-

lopment in the municipality of San Roque place.

This will be the first time the famous dancer acting in Sotogrande and do it for a good cause. No doubt that the linen-se, as usual in all his shows, you get a good capacity and therefore a substantial fund for Caritas to continue carrying out the caring and selfless work done daily in the Campo de Gi-braltar, assisting families who

are in need these days. The en-trance fee is 50 euros.

Morales performed last Tuesday at the coronation of the Royal Fair of San Roque, and before the dancer debu-ted in Jerez de la Frontera his show ‘Lorca, dead love, a work which gets into the skin of the great Grenadian poet recounts the last loving experience it. Conversar con Joaquín Santaella es charlar amigablemente con un compañero de profesión. Pe-riodista y escritor, es autor del

libro Cartas de Sotogrande, una publi-cación que tiene como origen la corres-pondencia epistolar que Santaella man-tuvo con una amiga, que se prolongó durante años, y en cuyas cartas trataba de explicarle cómo era la vida en Soto-grande. “Las cartas son la base del libro, pero durante casi dos años he estado trabajando para convertirlo en algo que yo he llamado un “relataje”, un término que me he inventado para describir algo que está entre el relato y el reportaje”, cuenta el escritor.

Desde el principio de la entrevista, el periodista deja claro que quien bus-que en este libro personajes, anécdotas o crónica histórica no los va a encon-trar. “No he querido hacer un libro so-bre la historia de la urbanización, ni un anecdotario, sino un relato literario. Y aunque tiene un poco de todo eso, y es un relato amable, salpicado con una fina ironía, el enfoque es netamente litera-rio”, añade el autor.

Veinte años de residencia en Soto-grande -a la que califica de “cosa rara” por no ser ni pueblo ni ciudad- le han otorgado el conocimiento suficiente para hablar, de una forma amena y na-tural, de cómo es el día a día en la urba-nización. “Este es el aspecto que más me interesaba de todos. En Cartas de Soto-grande no hay fotos, los personajes no son protagonistas, sino que lo es la ur-banización en sí misma”.

El libro está lleno de las experiencias que Santaella ha vivido y vive en prime-ra persona. “Aquí, la vida social la cul-tivas solo si quieres. La estructura que tiene la urbanización te permite decidir o no si quieres encontrarte con la gente. Pero lo más sorprendente de todo es, en mi opinión, que pese a todo Sotogrande ha conseguido hacerse con un carácter propio. Y este carácter es el resultado de la mezcla entre los municipios de alre-dedor y el aporte internacional de quie-nes residen en Sotogrande. Creo que el Campo de Gibraltar se ha visto favoreci-do por Sotogrande y viceversa. Y eso ha provocado esta sociedad tan peculiar”, explica el periodista. Según comenta, la manifestación más clara de esta mezcla entre Sotogrande y la cultura y la his-toria de los municipios de alrededor se

pone de relieve en la procesión maríti-ma que se celebra con motivo de la Vir-gen del Carmen. “Ese día, cuando la Vir-gen sale al mar, lo mismo te encuentras a un pescador que a un yate con una je-quesa haciendo fotos. Esta es una de las pruebas más claras de que lo local, lo internacional y el factor lujo conviven perfectamente”, manifiesta Santaella.

El libro, que ha sido presentado hace tan solo unos días, tiene como cometi-do intentar desterrar el tópico de que

en Sotogrande solo viven millonarios. “Es verdad que aquí tienen residen-cia aristócratas, escritores o pintores; pero también te los puedes encontrar charlando con pescadores o camareros”, cuenta el autor del libro, publicado con motivo del 50 aniversario de la funda-ción de la urbanización.

A lo largo del libro, el autor hace re-ferencia a unas 50 personas, algunas con sus nombres verdaderos y otras con nombres ficticios, por petición expresa de los mismos e intentando preservar su intimidad. “A medida que avanza el re-lato va saliendo poco a poco la historia de Sotogrande; y las vivencias de unos y otros. Y con todo ello pretendo elimi-nar el cliché de que Sotogrande es úni-camente lo que se ve en la televisión du-rante el mes de agosto. No es solo eso, pues después de medio siglo, ha sido capaz de generar una sociedad propia y

diversa”, explica Santaella. Editado por Edinexus, Cartas de So-

togrande se compone de 300 páginas y está dividido en cuatro partes bien di-ferenciadas e identificadas con cada una de las estaciones del año. Joaquín Fernández Santaella Martín-Artajo, co-rresponsal de la Agencia EFE en Brasil, y subdirector del suplemento domini-cal del diario ABC, es autor también de los libros Vino Torcido y The Spanish House.

Talking to Joaquín Santaella is like chatting to a friend in the field. A journalist and a wri-ter, Santaella is the author of

the book Cartas de Sotogrande (“Letters of Sotogrande”), which takes its roots in the epistolary correspondence bet-ween the author and a friend over seve-ral years, describing life in Sotogrande. “The letters form the backbone of the book, however for two years now I have been working on converting it into so-mething which I call a “relataje”; a term I have invented in order to describe so-mething between a story and a report”, the author explains.

From the very start of the interview, the journalist made it very clear that readers seeking characters, anecdotes or historical accounts, shall not find what they are looking for. “What I had in mind was not to write a book or a co-llection of anecdotes about the history of the residential estate, but a literary story. And even though it includes a litt-le bit of everything, it is a pleasant story with hints of irony, focusing mainly on literature” the author adds.

Twenty years living in the Sotogran-de residential estate - a place which he describes as “strange” as it is neither a village nor a town - has provided him with sufficient knowledge to naturally discuss day to day life on the residential estate. “This is the aspect that draws my attention the most. In the “Cartas de So-togrande” there are no photos, the cha-racters are not the protagonists but the residential estate itself is.

The book is brimming with Santaella´s personal experiences in So-togrande. “Here you may structure your social life in the way you wish. The lay out of the residential estate means you may decide for yourself if you wish to bump into certain people. However, the most surprising fact of all in my opinion is that, despite everything, Sotogrande has managed to develop a personality of its own. This personality is a result of the combination of the surrounding towns and the international input from those living in Sotogrande. I think that the Campo de Gibralata is favoured by Sotogrande and viceversa, and thus this strange society has emerged” the jour-nalist explains. According to him, the clearest example of this mix of cultu-re and history between Sotogrande and

the surrounding towns can be seen in the maritime procession held in homage to the Virgen del Carmen. “On this day, when the Virgin emerges from the sea, fishermen can be found in yachts taking photos from the shore. This is one of the most evident examples that the local, in-ternational and luxury can live together in perfect harmony”; states Santaella.

The book, which was presented only a few days ago, intends to put an end to the cliché that only millionaires reside

in Sotogrande. “I won´t deny that aristo-crats, writers and painters live in Soto-grande; yet you also may find them chat-ting to waiters or fisherman”, the author of the book comments. Furthermore, his book is published in light of the 50th anniversary of the residential estate.

Throughout the pages of the book, the author refers to around 50 indivi-duals, some of which he writes about under their real name and other with fictitious names, in line with their ex-press content and in the aim of conser-ving their privacy. “As the story deve-lops, the history of Sotogrande unravels along with the experience of its resi-dents.” His main aim is to put an end to the cliché that Sotogrande is only that which is seen on the TV throughout the month of August. Furthermore, after half a century the residential estate has developed a diverse and unique society”,

explains Santaella.Edited by Edinexus, “Cartas de Soto-

Intends to put an end to the cliché that only millionaires reside in the residential state

El colectivo Mosayko Arte Mú-sica y la Asociación Cultural Sotogrande han convocado una nueva cita con el arte y la

música para el próximo 21 de agosto. Se trata de una puesta en escena que va a sorprender a todos, resultado de un proyecto de Pedro Monty, conocido como El reino de las musas, en el que arte y música se fusionan. No es la pri-mera vez que Mosayko, presidida por Carmen Jiménez, y Sotogrande llevan a cabo un acto de este tipo, pero en esta ocasión se han superado ya que ha-brá una exhibición de pintura que es-tará acompañada por el sonido de un gran piano de cola. Concretamente un Steinway, cedido por la familia Hinves.

“Aún no me creo que vayamos a traer un piano de cola hasta aquí. Estoy muy contenta de haberlo conseguido”, cuen-ta Carmen, quien añade que esta cita estará abierta a la participación de di-ferentes artistas locales que practican distintas disciplinas.

Habrá una parte del programa en el que se exhibirán las obras de los artis-tas de Mosayko; y en la exhibición, será el pintor y artista plástico José Manuel Gamero, quien realice su obra al ritmo del pianista y compositor Pedro Gutié-rrez, conocido como “Monty”.

En esta importante cita del verano, ambas entidades culturales cuentan con la colaboración de Pinna Fidelis, que ofrecerá una cata de vino; y Extra Natural, de Andrea L. Rafetta, que será la entidad encargada de servir el cate-ring.

El espectáculo pictórico-musical de Ars CreAtiva 21 será presentado en Ale-mania el próximo otoño. Düsseldorf ha sido la ciudad elegida para dar a co-

nocer esta puesta en escena, que se en-marca dentro del proyecto SOS: Spirit of Spain. Pero antes, el público que lo desee tendrá un adelanto del mismo el

próximo jueves 21 de agosto a partir de las siete y media de la tarde en la Plaza de los Naranjos.

Mientras tanto, continúa la inicia-

tiva de Solo Arte, exhibiendo en la ca-lle las numerosas obras que el colecti-vo reúne de diferentes artistas locales e internacionales.

The collection Mosayko Art and Music has set a new date for art and music, which is the 21st of August. This play is a

work of art set to surprise all and is the result of a project by Pedro Monty, known as El reino de las musas (“The Kingdom of Muses”) in which art and music come together.

This is not the first time that this association, chaired by Carmen Jimé-nez, has taken part in a performance of this type. On this occasion they have excelled themselves in organising an art exhibition on display to the sound of music played on a grand piano; more specifically, a Steinway grand piano, passed down from the Hinves family.

“I still can´t believe we are going to bring a grand piano all the way here. I am delighted that we have achieved everything”, Carmen states, who also adds that the exhibition is open to a wide range of local artists from a ple-thora of disciplines.

Part of the programme shall include the exhibition of the work of the Mosa-yko artists; and at the actual event, the painter and artist José Manuel Game-

ro shall work on his painting in har-mony with the rhythm of the pianist and composer Pedro Gutiérrez, known as “Monty”. On this very important date this Summer, Carmen Jiménez counts on the collaboration of Pinna Fidelis, who shall be offering a wine tasting session; Extra Natural of Andrea L. Ra-fetta who shall be responsible for pro-

viding the catering services and the So-togrande Cultural Association.

The art and music show of Ars CreAtiva 21 shall be presented in Ger-many this Autumn.

The city Dusseldorf has been cho-sen to host the event and introduce the country to this play, which is ran within the SOS (Spirit of Spain) pro-

ject. But before this, the public shall also have the chance to catch the show next Thursday, the 21st August from half past seven at the Plaza de los Na-ranjos. Meanwhile the Solo Arte initia-tive shall continue to display their art in the streets, sharing their fabulous collection of both local and internatio-nal artists.

SOTOGRANDE .- Cerca de 40.000 personas, según fuen-tes oficiales, pasaron ayer por la playa de El Rinconcillo para asistir a los distintos actos que, con motivo de la festividad de la Virgen de la Palma, tienen lugar en Algeciras cada 15 de agosto. La imagen, sumergida durante el resto del año, sale del mar en una de las proce-siones marineras más emocio-nantes y singulares de la costa gaditana y andaluza. Es la ro-mería marítima, que en 2014 ha sido declarada Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía.

La virgen, que se encuentra sumergida a unos 15 metros de profundidad en una cueva en las cercanías de la Bahía de Al-geciras, permanece durante el resto del año bajo el control de los buzos, que son los encarga-dos del mantenimiento y la se-guridad de la talla, limpiarla de algas y evitar que las corrientes la desplacen de su refugio.

Esta romería suele comen-zar al alba, cuando los barcos engalanados salen del puerto de Algeciras y se adentran en la Bahía para que los submari-nistas del club de buceo El Es-trecho rescaten la imagen. Una talla de 1,10 metros de altura, realizada por el escultor Nacho Falgueras en marmolina; que pesa unos 120 kilos, y que sus-tituyó en el año 2000 a la escul-tura original, desaparecida un año antes en las profundidades del océano. Cada 15 de agos-to, la comitiva sale del mar con ella a hombros y la lleva hasta la playa, donde llegan hacia la una y media de la tarde. La de-voción hacia la Virgen de la Pal-ma en Algeciras surge a finales del siglo XVII, cuando un bar-co procedente de Italia atracó en el puerto para refugiarse de un fuerte temporal. Cada vez que el barco intentaba salir, un nuevo temporal se lo impedía. Llegaron a trasladar el carga-mento a otra embarcación, pero -según cuenta la historiadora Ana Gómez- volvía a ocurrir lo mismo hasta que decidieron sa-car la imagen que llevaban en un cajón. Las aguas se calma-ron y el pueblo interpretó que la Virgen insistía en quedarse.

La Virgen llevaba una palma en la mano y este hecho se re-lacionó con la conquista de Al-geciras en 1344 por Alfonso XI quien consagró la antigua mez-quita como iglesia católica con el nombre de Virgen de la Pal-ma por ser aquel día Domingo de Ramos. La romería marine-ra tal como y se la conoce hoy es una iniciativa de la Sociedad Federada de Pesca Deportiva El Mero, que en 1975 decidió rea-lizar una réplica de la Virgen y organizar esta procesión.

El alcalde de Algeciras, José Ignacio Landaluce, ha señalado que la romería marítima representa para los algecireños uno de los momentos festivos más esperados del verano. “Estamos convencidos de que se trata de un bien no sólo de Interés Turístico, como ha declarado oficial-mente la Junta de Andalu-cía, sino de una tradición ampliamente consolidada y de notorio arraigo popu-lar. Hace ya 39 años que se lleva a cabo está entra-ñable procesión marinera, pero es ésta la primera

vez en que se desarrollará con el título andaluz de In-terés Turístico, un recono-cimiento concedido des-pués de varios años de insistencia y acreditación de suficientes visitantes y turistas”, ha declarado. En su opinión, los algecire-ños están especialmente orgullosos de esta fiesta que tiene un origen pura-mente popular y que, sin embargo, con el apoyo del Ayuntamiento y la colabo-ración desinteresada de muchísimos ciudadanos, ha llegado a convertirse en todo un referente del

de transporte público desde prácticamente to-dos los lugares de la ciu-dad, lo que permitirá una mayor fluidez de tráfico; dispositivos especiales de seguridad, asistencia mé-dica y emergencias; briga-das de limpieza moviliza-das para la ocasión y una ampliación de los horarios de funcionamiento de los módulos de servicios de playa. A todo ello hay que unir un gran espectáculo de fuegos artificiales ma-rítimos y terrestres que pondrán el broche de oro a la jornada.

sotoGrANde.- Near 40.000 persons, according to official sources, they happened yester-day for the beach of The Rin-concillo to be present at the different acts that, on the occa-sion of the festivity of the Virgin of the Palm, take place in Alge-ciras every August 15. This is a very special day for the city sin-ce it celebrates the city patron saint, the Virgen de la Palma (“The Palm Virgin”). This Icon which throughout the year re-mains submerged in the sea, ri-ses to the surface in one of the most unique and exciting ma-rine processions. This maritime pilgrimage is a tradition that gathers thousands of people to El Rinconcillo Beach in Algeci-ras and that this year has been declared Fiesta of National Tourist Interest of Andalusia.

The virgin who remains immersed in a cave at a dep-th of about 15 meters in the surroundings of the Algeciras Bay, is permanently under the control of the divers. They are in charge of the maintenance and the security of the sculp-ture; they also clean away the seaweed and finally make sure that the tide does not carry it away from its shelter.

The pilgrimage begins with the first rays of sunshine, when the decorated boats leave the port and enter the Bay so the divers belonging to El Estre-cho Diving Club may rescue the Icon. This marble sculp-ture made by Nacho Falgue-ras is a 1.10 meter high mar-ble model and weighs 120 kg. Since 2000, the latter has been used as a substitution to the original which disappeared the year before in the ocean dep-ths. The Mayor of Algeciras, José Ignacio Landaluce, states that the maritime pilgrimage represents one of the most awaited events of the summer for the locals. “We are more than convinced that the event is not only of great Tourist Interest, as it has been officially declared by the Regional Govern-ment of Andalusia, but it is also a deeply roo-ted tradition of notable prestige. This maritime procession has been ta-king place for 39 years

now, but this is the first time it shall be held un-der the title of Andalusian Tourist Interest, a distinc-tion granted after various years of insisting and the submission sufficient cer-tificates regarding visitors and tourists” he declared. In his opinion, the local residents of Algeciras are particularly proud of this event which can be traced back to popular culture. With the support of the Town Council and the help of many citizens, it has become the festi-

vity of the summer, and attracts locals, Spanish nationals and foreigners spending their summer holidays in the surroun-ding areas. “The maritime procession does not go unnoticed. So, all those who come down to El Rincon-cillo Beach can expect to find the neighbourhood decorated beautifully for the occasion like no other day of the year” Landalu-ce said. Especially for this festivity, special areas shall be marked out as car parks in addition to special

public transport services from all locations across the city, easing the flow of traffic. Furthermore, special security mea-sures shall be put into place along with medi-cal and emergency care; cleaning services equip-ped for the event and ex-tended opening times at all the beach establish-ments. To all the above, the outstanding beach and sea firework display must be added, bringing the day to the end with a fantastic finale.

A mass is held on the beach at around eight in the evening and at half past ele-ven, the sculpture is taken back to the cave where it remains all year long. At the stroke of mid-night, fireworks are set off from the beach and also underwater in order to say good bye to the Virgin until next year, as reca-lled José Cortés, the president of the Federal Society of Sport Fishing El Mero. This homage paid to the Virgen de la Parma in Algeciras dates back to the 17th century when a boat from Italy docked in the City Port to shelter from a storm. Every time the boat tried to leave the port, another storm held it back. They transferred their cargo to

another vessel yet – according to the Historian Ana Gómez- they were stopped again and again until they decided to take out the Sculpture they were carrying in a box. Suddenly, the waves quietened down and the village thus assumed that the Virgin wanted to stay the-re. Furthermore, the Virgin was holding a palm leaf with can be related back to Conquest of Al-geciras in 1344 by Alfonso XI, who converted the former Mos-que of the city into a Catholic Church named after the Virgen de la Palma, since the date was Palm Sunday.

The marine pilgrimage as we know it today was initiated by the El Mero which decided to make a copy of the Virgen de la Palma and to organize this procession in 1975.
