glorioso del año, lleno de amigos, familiares, celebraciones y de dar. Es también, sin duda, un momento de mayor estrés y el materialismo. A veces las vacaciones se pueden sentir como una loca carrera para comprar los mejores regalos, o encontrar la decoración perfecta, o para ser el mejor anfitrión de la tertulia, pero estos solo son meros accesorios, lo que significa muy poco en comparación con el verdadero espíritu de la temporada. Regalos, decoraciones y fiestas de lujo son grandes, pero el reunirse y compartir tiempo con los amigos y la familia es lo que realmente es en esta época del año. friends, family, celebrations and giving. It is also, without a doubt, a time of heightened stress and materialism. Sometimes the holidays can feel like a mad rush to buy up the best presents, or find the

perfect decoration, or host the best get-together, but these are mere accessories, which mean very little compared to the real spirit of the season. Gifts, decorations and fancy parties are great, but coming together and sharing time with friends and family is what this time of year is all about. So, relax and don’t stress about the little things. Try to enjoy yourself in the company of loved ones instead.

To ease the burden of the holidays, we have compiled a gift guide to make the shopping experience this year a bit more tolerable on page 20. And keep in mind Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s words about the pleasure of giving gifts when you're out there braving the crush of pushy shoppers and packed stores. We’ve also got a wonderful feature on holiday food and entertaining on page 17.

This time of year is about giving, but it’s also about giving thanks, and few other groups deserve our gratitude than our brave servicemen and servicewomen in the military. Unfortunately, the transition from active duty to civilian life is difficult for many. On page 18, we have a feature that offers advice on how to make the transition easier.

In this volume, we also have a great feature story on Samara Gomez, a young Harrisburg lawyer who recently won the Michael K. Smith Excellence in Service Award presented by the Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (page 14).

El año 2012 a traído muchos casos importantes prominentes jurídicos que afectan a los residentes de Pennsylvania, así como a los ciudadanos y no ciudadanos de

los Estados Unidos en su totalidad. Nuestra propia legislatura estatal intento aprobar una ley en Pennsylvania de identificación electoral, lo que requeriría que todos los votantes muestren una tarjeta de identificación emitida por el gobierno antes de ejercer su derecho al voto. Act, which would require all voters to show a government-issued identification card before exercising their right to vote. Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court Judge Robert. E. Simpson Jr. postponed the enforcement of the Voter Identification Act until after the November 2012 elections. However, the judge allowed the Pennsylvania Department of State to continue its advertising campaign, both in English and Spanish, which informed potential voters that showing government-issued identification was necessary to cast their vote. This inconsistency in messaging could have caused great confusion amongst voters. Opponents of the act insist that it does not protect against voter fraud, but in effect dissuades and potentially prevents mostly poor, immigrant or elderly voters from exercising their right to vote.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a split decision regarding Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070, an extremely aggressive

On June 15, 2012, the President announced a deferred-action directive concerning certain eligible undocumented youth. Although the undocumented individuals must meet very detailed requirements for deferred-action relief. Those that do, can obtain a Social Security number, work authorization and potentially

s difícil de creer que otro año pronto llegará a su fin. Hemos vivido alrededor de una campaña política divisiva. Nuestra economía es lenta, la clase media está sintiendo la mayoría de los dolores de esta contracción. La persona promedio ha perdido más de $ 4.000 dólares en ingresos. La inflación está robando dinero de nuestros

bolsillos, ya que el precio de todo, parece aumentar. Estamos a punto de sentarnos en una mesa para celebrar y dar gracias por todas las bendiciones, pero algunos se preguntan por qué.

middle class feeling the most pain of this contraction. The average person has lost over $4,000 dollars in income. Inflation is stealing money from our pockets as the price of everything seems to rise. We are about to sit at the holiday table and give thanks for all our blessings, but some would ask why.

We live like few had ever done in all of history. In America, our poor are richer that most of the world. We still have freedom of movement, speech and religion. If you are breathing, it is a gift. If your children are alive, you

are blessed. If you have food on the table, you are privileged. Living in this wondrous country, at this time in history, even with all our problems, is still a blessing.

We must remember the world is not America. I don’t feel guilty because America is prosperous. I do think we must use our position of power and wealth to help others become prosperous and free. We must remember how privileged we are.

According to the World Bank and the One Campaign, over 3 billion people live on less than $2 a day, and 30,000 children die every day, which is a child dead every three seconds.

The world economy is contracting, and the poor will be the most affected. When one thinks of our problems

here in America, we can quickly see why, over this holiday season, we should be thankful. Through all the silly gift giving and the rush to get the latest gadget, we should consider that we already have this great gift of being an American. We should realize that the greatest gift is to give rather than receive.

Rather than participate in all the commercialism, spend more time giving to those who have less, share “do-nothing” moments with your family, visit those who normally don’t have visitors and thank the higher power for even the least of our own gifts.

The holiday season used to have a religious meaning. Today, we too often forget that this is a season of self-

reflection, sharing and a rededication to being a better person in the coming year. Instead, we get involved in the chaos of packed shopping malls, last-minute invitations and spending more than we should.

Days after Christmas or Hanukah, exhausted individuals move the empty boxes and broken toys to the curb for trash pick up. They throw away more food than most families in some countries see in a year. Emotionally tired and over-spent, they rush into the new year.

My advice, spend more time with those you love, give a turkey to a shelter, help a family less fortunate than yours and thank God for just being alive in this country.

t is Christmas time, and many of us will soon partake in many holiday festivities. Many cities are filled with lights, music and special events. Gift giving is also a tradition this time of year, which is why many of us find great deals for gifts to place under the Christmas tree, which is brightly decorated in the living room.

The traditions of gift giving, decorating, hosting parties and baking holiday goodies remain the same. However, the money needed to keep these traditions alive is less than in previous years due to the current global recession. For many, the holidays may present a time of financial hardship, depression and stress. This should not be the case.

According to the Pennsylvania 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey data, about 1 in 5 (22 percent) adults reported having limited activity due to physical, mental or emotional problems, compared to 1 in 4 (24 percent) of adult Latinos reporting the same. 2. Spend quality time with friends and family. This will help build your social-support system, which is important for a person to have. Practice forgiveness. It is time to mend relationships.

3. Protect your children’s future. You need to protect them both physically (their health) and financially (their credit score). Talk to health experts and financial experts to learn what you can do to improve your child’s health and financial status.

4. Keep the family tradition. This will help preserve your culture and value system. 5. Share your favorite family recipes with your children and grandchildren. This will

make grandma happy.6. Listen to your favorite holiday music. This will help relax a person, thus reduce stress.7. Watch your food portion size. Large portion size leads to more calories; more calories

lead to weight gain.

Every city has its unique way of celebrating Christmas. In Hershey, one can enjoy unique holiday-themed attractions, special kids’ activities, holiday shopping and festive culinary events during Christmas in Hershey (christmasinhershey.com). In Jim Thorpe, Pa., one can enjoy train rides with Santa, live nativity, historic district ghost walks, Christmas arts, bazaar, gingerbread house contest and many locally owned music, eateries and shopping venues (jimthorpeoldetimechristmas.com).

In San Antonio, Texas, you can enjoy shopping at many fine shops for handcrafted gifts, art, salsas and other local treats. You can also enjoy The Riverwalk at night that conveys the beauty of 100-foot cypress tress draped in 180,000 colorful, twinkling lights (heartofsanantonio.com).

In Puerto Rico, one can enjoy “parrandas or trullas navideñas.” A parranda is the Puerto Rican version of Christmas caroling. Most parranderos play some sort of instrument, either guitarras, tamboriles, güiro maracas or palitos. And they all sing.

In Mexico City, the city transforms into one giant fiesta, and one can enjoy everything from homemade tamales to the garden of Paseo de la Reforma spread with the red of poinsettias. Voy a empezar por analizar rápidamente los métodos físicos, mentales, emocionales y espirituales necesarios para mantener el pensamiento positivo y propagar acciones proactivas mediante la exploración del uso de estos elementos de forma individual y colectiva. n my book, The Creative Energy of Positive Thinking, I mentioned that one of the routes to positive thoughts is by establishing a solid connection among the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical core elements of the body. This creates reciprocal feedback from each part of our structure that becomes necessary to maintain a connection between the internal assets (mind and soul) and the external physical

and emotional resources (corporal responses and feelings).I will start quickly analyzing the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual methods

of maintaining positive thinking and entertain proactive actions by exploring its components individually and collectively. Let us concentrate first on our rational and intelligent approach. Clearly there is a difference between brain and mind. The brain is the soft tissue that functions as the center of our nervous system, while the mind is the person’s intellectual ability, memory capacity and free will. The mind combines two basic components: rational and emotional responses. Famed clinical, developmental and cognitive psychologist Reuven Feuerstein said, “It is possible to have a brain and not have a mind. A brain is inherited; a mind is developed.” It is my understanding that in referring to mind, he means intelligence or intellectual potential.

Our minds and feelings are affected by the positive and negative energy that flows inside of us as well as in the environment. Both people and nature influence thinking and therefore decision making. A person uses internal and external responses to assimilate the effects of their desires. Since this is a choice, you have the option to seed your mind with positive thoughts and allow it to frequent environments charged with positive energy and proactive interactions.

Critical thinking is a rational concept that usually filters our emotional components as well as the interference of patterns or paradigms. Sometimes, this helps us

reaffirm principles or confront diverse realities that we may encounter in our search of truth.

It is not my intention to create uncertainty or challenge your beliefs; my purpose is to make you aware of the existence, influence and transmission of negative thinking. There is no doubt that positive and negative energy exists. In fact, in my view, there is no intermediate level in the energy field – it is either positive or negative. You have the choice of accepting the positive influence or, even better, generating an affirmative chain reaction of positive thinking instead of being trapped by negativism.

I understand that the dimension of both positive and negative influences relates directly to the structure of your personality. Your personality type certainly influences your way of thinking and acting. The bottom line is that your personality is shaped by the effect you have on others and the impression that others make on you. People sometimes erroneously accept negative influences as an inevitable human situation. However, it is merely one option. You can live prostrated by the disguised choice of others or grow up under the intelligent design of your own positive perspective. A fresh approach can help you consciously re-evaluate the current present and prepare for an optimistic future. Just keep always in mind that in order to build a pathway to positive thinking and enjoy a more meaningful life, the balance between mind, emotions, body and spirit must be secured and works harmoniously one another. I will talk about the other element in the future.

Finally, I would like to use this opportunity to wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. It is my sincere intention that peace be with all of those who celebrate these festivities. For the rest of my brothers and sisters, both by blood and by heart, happy holidays.


Harrisburg Attorney is Honored by State Bar Association

ast May, at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, the Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers Division presented the Michael K. Smith Excellence in Service Award to Samara Gomez. The

award is named in memory of a young Philadelphia lawyer who was committed to providing legal services for low-income people, and to offering law-related educational programs to students.

Gomez accepted the award with grace and humility. In her remarks, she noted, “There are thousands of young lawyers throughout the Commonwealth whose exemplary personal and professional conduct is nothing short of awe-inspiring, yet, they may never be recognized. So, I would like to dedicate this award to them. They have done and will do more for this profession than I can ever hope to accomplish.”

Regarding the last sentence, a more dispassionate analysis might reach a different conclusion. Because, at 30 years of age,

Gomez has already established noteworthy credentials as an assistant counsel at the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA).

“My responsibilities focus on affordable housing, low-income housing tax credits, consumer lending, community-development programs, tax, foreclosure, real estate, employment matters and contracts and procurements,” she says. No wonder her office desk is covered with a variety of folders, documents and files.

Alluding to a specific example of her work, Gomez says, “PHFA sought a Section 811 Grant from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD. Section 811 deals with supportive housing for persons with disabilities. I had to review and coordinate the application, pulling all the pieces together, and working with our staff to see that all of the requirements were met.”

Gomez is also responsible for PHFA’s implementation of and compliance with the Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law. She

responds to requests and represents PHFA before the Office of Open Records and the Commonwealth Court.

However, it is her activities with the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) that really earned the Vallejo, Calif., native the Smith Award this past spring in Lancaster. In 2011, for example, she implemented a pilot Bar Passage Program for the PBA Young Lawyers Division. The program partners bar candidates with lawyer mentors to help the candidates prepare for the essay portion of the bar examination. Gomez worked with law schools and various organizations to obtain past bar essay questions and arranged for speakers to educate test-takers about the bar exam process.

At 18, Gomez enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C., 3,000 miles from her West Coast home. “Yes, I wanted to get away,” she confesses. “And I loved Washington, and the many friends that I made while in school.” But there was little time for socializing or for extra-curricular activities.

“I basically attended classes and worked my way through college,” she says. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2004.

Gomez moved on to Penn State’s Dickinson School of Law, where she was awarded her Juris Doctor Degree in 2007. While at Dickinson she served as an intern at the Family Law Clinic, the Capital Litigation Appeals Division of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office, as well as PHFA. And, like her undergraduate days at Howard, Gomez took employment to help defray her education and living expenses.

A full list of the Harrisburg woman’s accomplishments is not possible in this limited forum. They are the fruit of an exemplary work ethic that was planted in elementary school, where she first saw the phrase, “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”

Giving Back, One Sale at a Time

uying a car is a big step in life and sometimes doesn’t seem accomplishable even though it is very necessary. Getting a job, transporting children to school or the doctor’s and simply getting from one place to another for any reason can be much more difficult without a reliable vehicle. On top of that, add in the fact that you may speak Spanish and have trouble knowing all the facts about

purchasing a new car due to the lack of full communication between the buyer and English-speaking salesman. Perhaps your financial and credit situations just aren’t where you want them to be.

All of these problems are real, and for Damaris Sevillano, she sees these problems and has been assisting the Latino customers at Brenner Nissan in Mechanicsburg one sale at a time. But before becoming a car salesman, she lived a life full of joy and struggles, which has made her into the tough – yet caring – person that she is today.

Sevillano spent the first 16 years of her life in Puerto Rico. Due to her mother’s constant work schedule to support her family, Sevillano was raised by her grandparents. She reflects on the good times that she had growing up in the town of Arecibo. She can remember being raised in what she refers to as an old-fashioned lifestyle – a home filled with music, laughter, being thankful and practicing manners.

“I didn’t know how lucky I was then,” says Sevillano. “I used to go camping every weekend and visit the beaches with my grandfather, who knew a lot of people. He took me all over Puerto Rico.”

In 1994, Sevillano journeyed to the U.S. with her mother to help care for her during her struggle with health issues. At age 16, she was exposed to a new lifestyle to which she was not yet accustomed.

“It was difficult. Over here, life is so fast-paced,” recalls the 35-year-old. “I was used to being more relaxed and content with my family in Puerto Rico.”

Upon arrival in the U.S., she proceeded with high school, receiving her GED, picked up a manager position in retail and even modeled here and there.

After moving to Pa. to be closer to her sister, Sevillano is now a resident of Lebanon and is a car salesman at Brenner Nissan on Carlisle Pike. With her aspirations of pursuing

a MBA, she wanted to get involved with a hands-on job, working with more important business aspects.

When looking at the job ads in the newspaper, she saw the posting for the sales position, and with the encouragement of her friends, she applied. Brenner was a big change for Sevillano. She was no longer selling impulse beauty products to customers in New York City. As a car salesman, she was helping people make financial purchases that drastically could impact their lives. This is something she does not take lightly.

“It is a big purchase. It is like buying a house,” states Sevillano. “You have to fall in love with it. I don’t want to put someone in a car that isn’t going to meet their needs. When they leave the lot, it is between the purchaser and the bank, and the last thing I want is for them to have to deal with problems.”

Sevillano has been with Brenner Nissan since August, and after completing nearly six weeks of training to get to know the vehicles before selling, she has now been selling on the floor for two months. Her biggest assignment is helping the Hispanic customers when translating needs to be done. This is something that she not only thinks is important, but allows for a relationship to be built between herself and her customers.

“Being Hispanic, and Spanish being [a customer’s] primary language, some would prefer to buy a car from someone who speaks Spanish because they can understand better,” Sevillano says. “It’s a trust. If they can trust you, they can do business with you forever.”

As a mother of three children – 12-year-old Melanie, 10-year-old Kristy and 5-year-old Claudio – she has seen her fair share of struggles in life, both in her early adulthood as well as during motherhood. One thing she truly admires about Brenner is its involvement with charities in the area.

“Right now we are doing Toys for Tots,” she says with a smile. “I always like being involved with charities and committees because there were times that I needed their help, and now it’s my time to give back.”

And that’s exactly what she’s doing.She’s giving back every day when she helps the Latino customers at Brenner. She’s

changing lives, one sale at a time, and she is building relationships for a lifetime.

Consejos Para Comenzar Una Carrera Despuès Del Servicio En Las Fuerzas Armadas

uchos de los miembros que prestaron servicio en las Fuerzas Armadas se enfrentan a un gran interrogante: “Y ahora... øquè hago?” La transiciûn de la vida militar a la vida civil no siempre es sencilla y los miembros en servicio deben prepararse para la vida despuès del servicio en las Fuerzas Armadas.

El coronel retirado de la Armada Garland Williams, vicepresidente regional de la divisiÛn militar en la Universidad de Phoenix, conoce por experiencia propia de què se trata este cambio de vida.

“Lo ˙nico previsible en la carrera militar es que en alg˙n momento se terminar·”, manifestû Williams. “Aquellos que no tienen una preparaciûn apropiada y una educaciûn universitaria pueden encontrarse con que les resulta difÌcil conseguir empleo. Sin embargo, para otros, las opciones pueden ser abrumadoras cuando el individuo intenta definir su plan para el futuro.

Un miembro en transiciûn de las Fuerzas Armadas deber· prestar especial atenciûn a cÛmo se presentar· sin el uniforme”, destacû Williams. “La tarea primordial en el momento de transiciûn es conseguir empleo. Debe enfocarse en ello.”

Seg˙n la Bureau of Labor Statistics (Oficina de EstadÌsticas Laborales), la demanda de empleo en la prûxima dÈcada se concentrar· especialmente en los trabajadores calificados en el cuidado de la salud, la seguridad de la informaciûn, la investigaciûn cientìfica, el cumplimiento de la ley y los servicios financieros.
