Advanced Waste to Gas: Innovat ive Process for gasi f icat ion of waste s ludge and residual s ludge/waste mixes and process pre- industr ia l izat ion The AdWastoGas project consists in sizing, building and developing an experimental prototype for the thermal gasification of residual sludge from sewage and waste treatment plants on the basis of an innovative concept combining residue quality and energy performance. This work was made possible by the association of four industrial partners specializing in thermal processes, construction of special machines, the environment and sustainable development, and an academic research lab working in the field of Process Engineering. The objectives of this project, which is fully encompassed in a sustainable development approach, are to demonstrate the validity of this innovative process at a meaningful scale and more broadly to demonstrate the viability and relevance of gasification processes for thermal waste treatment as compared to its competitors. The technology proposed and developed in this project is consistent with the ambitious approach of the "circular economy", and through energy-related topics, targets depollution and eco-friendly design, and innovation in the field of residual sludge recovery from sewage and waste treatment plants.

L ight emit t ing text i les for water t reatment through photocata lys is The ANR ECOTECH AQUAPHOTEX project (2012-2015) proposes to develop a remediation photocatalytic light-emitting textile to be used in water treatment. This advanced oxidation process (POA) could be applied in conjunction with other treatments, either at the end of chain to degrade all organic molecules, or at the beginning to make products biodegradable. The technological innovation concerns the design of a remediation photocatalytic light-emitting textile suitable for aqueous media based on work carried out during project PHOTEX (ANR 2007-2010) on air remediation. In this project, the side-lit "optical fiber" textile connected to UV ® LEDs -developed by the company Brochier Technologies- is both the source of UV irradiation and photocatalyst medium, creating a maximum contact surface between these two elements. The project will focus on the choice and adaptation of the photocatalytic light-emitting textile to the aqueous medium and its positioning within a reactor in order to maximize the pollutant-UV-photocatalyst contact place and time. The proposed research work will therefore focus on:

    • the design and production of the photocatalytic light-emitting textile structure suitable for an aqueous medium,

    • the study of the flow of liquid and reactive transport of target molecules within the system at a microscopic scale (elementary cycle) and at the macroscopic scale (textile panel),

    • the characterization of the innovative material's photocatalytic performance on two pollutant models (formic acid and Imidacloprid, an insecticide).

The project aims to propose an innovative solution for the treatment of aqueous effluents through photocatalysis.           Pro ject ho lder Laure PERUCHON, Brochier Technologies (69) Research partners IRCELYON, CNRS DR 07 (Institut de Recherches sur la

Sensor measur ing fou l ing in industr ia l processes Deposits start forming from the start everywhere water circulates. Information on the equipment fouling condition helps detect, monitor and predict transfer disruption and degradation (health safety and agricultural product quality) due to these deposits, but also reduce energy consumption and limit emissions (better management of cleaning cycles, production optimization, limitation of emissions). In this context, project CAP ENC aims to develop a sensor to quantify and identify the nature of fouling within the cooling processes. A feasibility study of its application in other areas is also provided for: agribusiness, processes is marine environment (measurement probes, ship hulls, etc.). The innovative nature of this project is based on the coupling of discrete spectral measurements with electrical and thermal excitations.

Innovat ive capture of f reshwater f ish larvae - CAPTILARVES The capture of larvae of coastal marine animals makes it possible to study and better understand the early stages of the life cycles of fish and crustaceans in order to acquire further knowledge on populations and community dynamics. In the framework of the European WFD which aims to achieve good environmental status for aquatic environments by 2015, we propose to test the capture of fish larvae in continental freshwater, and more particularly in lake ecosystems. Indeed, use of this new method in European continental waters is still very rare, even though it could provide new elements for understanding a key phase of the fish life cycle. The project's general goal is therefore to test this technique in a realistic context to provide in the long term a new potential bio-indication tool for managers, aimed at better understanding of fish communities and freshwater ecosystems with a view to improving knowledge, conservation and ultimately preservation.

CHWWEPS – CarboHydrate f rom WasteWater into EPS

    © Veolia

The CHWWEPS project, submitted in the framework of the French ANR research agency's ECO-TS RFP has a threefold objective:

    • Specific recovery of industrial wastewater, sanitation subproducts, or waste, by processing into alginate exopolysaccharides. This transformation is performed by hydrolysates thermally (or enzymatically) and then by a microbial consortium selected continuously.

    • Reuse of the alginate polymer obtained after formulation (and purification if required) as coagulation/flocculation agent in the water treatment chains (wastewater, if the waste used is not suitable, and drinking water if sanitary quality allows). Recycling waste into a product makes it possible to establish a short virtuous cycle within the water treatment industry.

    • Valorization of a model of circular economy, based on the engineering of microbial consortia and which target the specialization of production function in non-sterile conditions ("mixed culture biotechnology").

    Project DIGUINTELLIGENT

The project concerns embankments for protection against river and marine flooding. The project aims to develop an operational system for detection of leaks on embankments, enabling: • on the one hand, integrated permanent monitoring of the water content of the foundations,

corresponding to continuous monitoring of mixed hydraulic works for protection against river or sea flooding

    • on the other hand, leaks to be located on specific events, and continuously monitoring leak flow rates quantitatively and in real time to determine the appropriate corrective actions and ensure the embankment remains safe.

The "Digue Intelligente" (smart embankment) project is therefore developing a new strategy of integrated measures to not only identify the presence of water in the dam but also and especially to quantify the water flow observed in earth or mixed works undergoing degradation, an important indicator of the risk of rupture.

Env i ronmenta l and soc ia l l i fecyc le assessment to improve bus iness compet i t iveness through eco log ica l and soc ia l t rans i t ion. Businesses are increasingly encouraged by the market and regulations to reduce the E & S footprint of their products / services. The ELSA-PACT project is an industrial chair (winner of the 2013 RFP of the French ANR research agency which aims to consolidate and strengthen the competitiveness of French firms in natural resources management / exploitation (water and waste management, agricultural production / transformation) in the field of the use of the advanced LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) tools by helping them to implement their environmental and social (E&S) transition strategy. This implies (1) having appropriate E&S assessment methods (specific and easy to use) and knowing how to use them, and (2) meeting markets receptive to these criteria. The Chair will help advance these 2 issues (development of methods and acquisition) by learning through research (theses and post docs), transfer to the industry, dissemination and the harmonization of methods. The chair has an initial 4-year duration and will be able to accommodate other companies from 2015.

Automated f ie ld device for select ive quant i f icat ion of micro-organisms The FISHBOX project aims to develop a qualitative and quantitative device to detect micro-organisms and assess their metabolic activity of interest. The project will automate and miniaturize TSA-FISH molecular technology and will be coupled with an epifluorescence microscope to allow observation and quantification of micro-organisms marked specifically by a fluorescent molecular probe. The project will provide the following innovations:

    • Screening of micro-organisms living in a fluid (water or air) collected by a concentration device, • Development of a "ruggedized" automatic analysis case for field use.

The innovation will cut handling time back by 50 to 90% as compared to a conventional laboratory analysis. In the field, the device will provide accurate quantification and metabolic activity assessment results within 5 to 7 hours, against 48 to 72 hours today. By its very nature, this project responds to the issues of health standards and fundamental research. Datamining for the assessment and monitor ing of the hydrobio logical qual i ty of water courses The goal is to preserve or restore the condition of bodies of water, required by the European Framework Directive on Water (FDW, 2000), highlights the need for operational tools for the interpretation of complex information on how water courses function, as well as for the assessment of programs of actions in progress. With this end in view, the FRESQUEAU project is trying to develop new methods to study, compare and exploit all available parameters regarding the state of the water courses and the measurements made. The methods developed are integrated in an open-source platform to aid in the interpretation of the way water courses function. The originality of the proposed approach is to link structural and functional data through a set of innovative methods, thus implementing a genuine process to assist in the discovery of knowledge. © Hassan Quarouch

Analys is of the resi l ience of new forms of agr icul ture i r r igated using groundwater in Maghreb This research project analyzes the vulnerability and adaptation capabilities of the "groundwater economy"* which represents a socio-ecological system where social and biophysical dynamics are intimately linked. In effect, the "groundwater economy" combines two complex systems: • The aquifer system where the natural recharging and flow

processes combine with anthropogenic processes of abstraction by drilling and re-infiltration through irrigation.

    • The social system where the economy generated by irrigation comes from the farmers themselves according to their capacity for initiative, investment and management.

The project goal is to develop an integrated approach to analyze the vulnerability and capability for adaptation of the "groundwater economy" in Maghreb to the environmental, economic and social changes. * The intensive use of groundwater resources has enabled the development of a dynamic agricultural economy that has created wealth, the "groundwater economy". IrriAlt’Eau A l ternat ive Water Resource wi th contro l led quant i ty and qua l i ty for v ine i r r igat ion Based on the regulatory and normative context and the state of the art, the project aims to develop a reasoned, competitive, economically viable, scientifically substantiated and sustainable practice for micro irrigation of vines with treated water from an alternative source with controlled quantity and physical, chemical and microbiological qualities. It involves direct reuse, using existing urban cleaning processes (Station of Narbonne Plage and Gruissan) whose performance has been qualified. They are supplemented by a tertiary treatment specially designed and constructed for this purpose, to ensure the required quality at the points of use for irrigation. It further offers the possibility of additionally watering other cultures the rest of the year. The project is planned to take 30 months. It combines industrial research and experimental development carried out at several scales, from experimental plots: 1.5 ha (INRA Pech Rouge facility), then 10 ha (Cave Gruissan), until gradual deployment on the scale of a vineyard (ultimately 150 ha projected), with a Go/No Go decision each time. The demonstration that an alternative resource of controlled quantity and quality can contribute to maintaining the competitiveness of traditional agricultural activity -in places where water is lacking-, and stimulating new ones, will strengthen the circular economy.

Karst, runof f and moisture: Character izat ion and real-t ime integrat ion of hydro-geological data in a f lood alert system The KRHU project should help improve flood forecasting on karst aquifer watersheds, taking into consideration the initial status of aquifers and soils. A crisis management tool based on relevant indicators of the degree of soil saturation and the filling of the karst will be supplied to duty staff (forecasters, analysts, etc.). These indicators of soil and karst saturation will be defined by establishing a suitable (soil, karst) monitoring network and through hydrogeological studies, and will be integrated in real time in the crisis management tool. The measurement network will serve to characterize system operation, as well as tools propose water resource management tools, in particular during low flow periods through the monitoring of piezometric levels during that time. The innovation will therefore concern a new flood forecast and alert service incorporating spatial indicators reflecting soil saturation and karst filling levels, which are key parameters to better anticipate flooding on karst component watersheds, since "karst water" components can give rise to sudden, high-intensity flooding when the karst is saturated.         Pro ject ho lder PREDICT Services (34) Industr ia l par tners Synapse (34) – Ceneau (34) Research partners BRGM (34) – ARMINES, Ecole des Mines d’Alès (30) Tota l budget €2,203 K Co-funders DGCIS / OSEO – Languedoc-Roussillon Region Label l ing leader Pôle EAU (French Water Cluster with global reach) Co- labe l l ing Risks Cluster Year o f labe l l ing 2011 Strateg ic act ions of the Axis 2 - Collaborative management of resources and uses water c luster Transverse ax is - Players and decisions: institutional and social

Development of a new membrane f i l t rat ion process in sewage treatment lagoons for the wastewater recovery The LAGUMEM project proposes to develop membrane modules and a specific process allowing partial reuse of wastewater treated in surface-aerated basins "for irrigation of crops or landscaping" in compliance with the Decree of 2 August 2010, including by spraying. The original contribution of the LAGUMEM project is to incorporate membrane filtration in the lagoon mechanical aeration device. The offer targets rural communities, whose workforces have no particular qualifications, through a robust and economically attractive system for reuse of their wastewater. The LAGUMEM project also aims to:

    • reduce uptake of locally available water resources, • reduce the flow of final discharge.

Envi ronmental ly intensive corn and ef f ic ient regional water management Corn is a predominant culture in south-western France, which supplies regional agribusiness channels. This crop offers the largest yield per hectare but requires additional water in summer, a time when resources are limited. Maize production is endangered by prospects of global warming and water restrictions. The French National Plan for Climate Change Adaptation has set the goal of saving 20% of water abstracted by 2020. MAISEO will develop new agronomic solutions to maintain maize grain yield consuming 20% less water, and new information systems for water management and monitoring at the watershed in order to prevent crisis situations when demand is highest, and better meet the target minimum flow (DOE).             Pro ject ho lder Vivadour (32) Industr ia l par tners Pioneer Génétique (31) – Geosys (31) – CACG (65) – Météo

Informat ion and steer ing system for the management of networks. Development of a series of innovative tools to cover the various stages of the water treatment cycle: networks of raw water, drinking water and waste water. Integrating these tools into a global information system will give operators and clients a real-time overview of the networks, representing a major innovation in the field of steering support and of collaboration of participants in the water treatment cycle. The tool and its developed components can be programmed for a multitude of water networks, in France and abroad, and the associated services used by local authorities or network operators. The target market is vast and can encompass the almost 600 of cities with over a million inhabitants around the globe.

The project is in context with energy recovery by methanization of effluents and organic waste. The industrial success of this sector, currently booming in France and Europe, relies in particular on the availability of appropriate steering tools. For instance, to optimize digester performance and anticipate malfunction, the volatile fatty acids, total alkali strength and ammonium are parameters to monitor very closely. However, to date no method to allows simultaneous online monitoring of these three parameters.

The project therefore aims to develop a multi-parameter online analyzer intended for methanizers, to provide operators with the data required for steer their facilities. The original contribution of this analyzer is to simultaneously monitor the three above parameters using fluorescence as sole detection method. In addition, a further innovation is the online separation of the different VFAs to determine their detailed composition.

Qual i ty contro l of aqueous hospita l ef f luents (oncology): assessment of tox ic i ty and eco-combinat ion of t reatment processes, on-si te val idat ion In hospital and pharmaceutical industry effluents, as well as in water treatment plants and, generally speaking, in the water, various pollutants have been identified: genotoxic agents (hydrocarbons), endocrine disruptors (cosmetic products) or plastics (Bisphenol A). Anti-cancer molecules, although less prevalent, represent a growing hazard. Anti-cancer substances administered to patients in large quantities are discharged in urine, and are only partially degraded and eliminated by purification plants. The known consequences of their presence in the environment range from allergy to cancer through loss of fertility, or even teratogenic effects in humans. The goals of the PANACEE project therefore involve:

    • Assessing the presence of molecules used for cancer treatment in the effluents of the corresponding hospital services.

    • Measuring the toxic effects of these effluents. • Developing a treatment process consisting of a combination of biological and physico-chemical

    Project ZHART

Art i f ic ia l wet lands The ZHART project aims to develop and industrialize the planning of planted discharge areas (ZRV) at the output of sewage stations (STEP) so that they can operate as a true artificial wetland (ZHART), i.e. provide safeguards for complementary treatment on micropollutants and creation of biodiversity through the provision of water. The ZHART developed in this project is distinguished from a ZRV in that it is designed with quantifiable functions on three points: hydraulic regulation, reduction of micropollutants and ecological benefit. It is a true finishing step in the wastewater treatment process and, in the long term, could lead to future regulations requiring discharge into the ZHART prior to the environment. Eventually, one of the ambitions of the project partners is to make ZHART eligible for funding from supervisory agencies (water board, general council, etc.), which would facilitate access to local authority projects.     Pro ject ho lder Groupe Suez Environnement (78) Industr ia l par tners Lyonnaise des Eaux (75) – Nymphea (30) – Eurofins IPL
