PERFORMATIVE INTERACTIONS:INNOVATION, CREATIVITY &ENTERPRISE - ALL TOGETHER....

knowledge but equally enthrallingwere the fun-filled networking sessionsessions that winded up way into thenight; bringing the industry muchcloser than it was ever before. The duecredit for such a wonderful conferencecum networking session goes to theLMAI team headed by PresidentVivek Kapoor and equally supportedby Sandeep Zaveri, Amit Sheth, AjayMehta, Ajay Agarwal, Harveer Sahni

The Indian label industryscenario is one of the bestsuccess stories ever written or

told. This fast growing industry thathas evolved in this last decade andreached staggering heights is not justa simple success story. But a story ofgrit and determination to reach heightsand achieve world level standards inwhatever it does. Call it the power ofintegrity and hardwork. This samecamaraderie was seen at the“Innovations Unlimited” conferenceheld at Hotel Park Hyatt in Goa, thisJuly end. Organized by LabelManufacturers Association of India’s(LMAI), this conference was one ofthe best networking sessions everorganized by any association in theIndian printing industry.

And what a conference it was!Something that caught everyone bysurprise as not only it was aided withpower packed sessions imparting

Could a normal conference have

the same profound impact what

the LMAI conference achieved?

The answer was a unanimous

“NO”. Organised on the lines of

year in various locations in Asia,

the LMAI conference welcomed

a range of prestigious speakers

from some of the world’s biggest

brands to Goa. The conference

not only brought in International

experts to discuss case-studies

and throw some light on success

and the rest of the organizingteam.

The LMAI that had been toyingwith the idea of holding a conferencefor long time were really apprehensiveof the response that would be metedout to them. And hence had targetedthe number of delegates at a modest125 and booked the hotel roomsaccordingly. However, a targetedapproach by the whole team coupledwith the event organizers and mediasupport not only hyped up theconference but found new takers too.

Says Harveer Sahni of WeldonCelloplast: “When the event wasconceptualized, the LMAI team wasvery optimistic and eager to hold theconference at Goa. As we came closerto the date of the event it became alittle uneasy situation as even the eventmanagers had not been finalized.Somewhere around the end of January2011, Vivek Kapoor the LMAI

President pressed the panic button. What followed was a concentratedbuild up to an amazing event. Vivekcalled all in his team across India dailyand talked for hours. All of us still joke- Vivek has free telephone lines. Theteam gelled together, worked hard andwhat evolved months later will be apart of history of label in this country.”

Such was the impact that not onlythe who’s who of the label industryhad sent in their confirmations, butmore people were interested to be apart of the event. The organizers ontheir hands now had a gigantic task asthe figures rose from 125 to 160 tolater 220 to finally settle at 270!Whoa!! The event was already a hiteven before it started. Since the venuecouldn’t accommodate all of themtogether at one place, nearbyproperties were booked. And thoughit was quite a distance from the mainvenue, none of the guests were

complaining. Neither did the delegatescomplain of having to attend theconference session immediately afterregistration for presentations at theconference hall.

Curtain raiser was a “Bang On”The high-level LMAI conference

took off post lunch on the 29th Julywith a welcome note by Vivek Kapoorwho welcomed all the delegates to theconference. And since we all talk ofthe Indian success story, Ajay Mehtaof SMI Coated Products gave apresentation on goodentrepreneurship skills. He wasfollowed by Jean Pierre DeMoor VP -Esko Artwork on “Security designs andanti-counterfeit techniques” and BoonChai Tan of DuPont Packaging whodiscussed on the “New techniques inplate making technologies and HDFlexo”. He also spoke on how DuPontis working closely with EskoArtwork

benefits of HD Flexo with digitalDuPont Cyrel to give unsurpassedsharpness and detail, fine highlightsand vignettes and enhanced solid inkdensity. With HD Flexo, the flexoconverter will notice many significantadvantages; especially the sharp detailin plates and high quality text and lineart. With an exceptional dot structureand extraordinary screening, tints aresmoother and easier to print.Meanwhile, there is a smooth vignettetransition throughout the highlightsto ‘zero’ and a high contrast inhighlights and shadows withoutvisible, hard edges.

After the hard hitting sessionsclustered with mind boggling detailsand knowledge on innovativedevelopments in the field, thedelegates were now ready forsomething entertaining to unwind. There was suspense in store. No onecould even wildly imagine that LMAIwill be arranging for some mindblowing performances by Africandrummers from the group “DrumCafé” to bring in power, passion andenergy to the event.

As one might be aware of, thedrum is an ancient tool ofcommunication and communitybuilding among many other culturesaround the world. Yes, before anymajor tribal decision were made, thecommunity gathered together at thecentre of the village to make music. This joyous making of music brokedown barriers and created a sense of

unity, thus enabling communities tobecome more effective in theirdecision-making.

As the African drummers on stagestarted to hammer on the skins of theirdrums, a hall fully packed withdelegates that belonged to the Indianlabel fraternity quickly reached anAlpha state, relieving their stressfuljourneys (if any) hitting the drumplaced squarely in the here and now.Initially confused with what to dowith the drums given to them, thedelegates readily became involved inthe drumming, turning the tablesfrom the expected environment of‘spectator’ / ‘performer’ to aninteractive environment where thelines between spectator and performermerged.

Said Sheetal Mishra, BusinessManager – Flexo Image Graphics:“The program was so nice, ittransported me to Africa for some time.I enjoyed it very much and I had awonderful time.” Added AmitabhLuthra of Printers Supply Co.Kolkata: “With the entire auditoriumdrumming to one beat, “InnovationsUnlimited” has caught everyoneunawares and surprised all present outhere. I should say, this is a fabulousstart to a great conference.” The“enthusiasm amongst all the delegateswas very high and the session wassuccessful beyond our expectations”cheered Ajay Mehta of SMI and a coreLMAI Team member. “The suddenstart and stop technique worked as abooster and a revitaliser as our mindsstared feeling the rhythm!” added adelegate. Yes! “Even I feel so as these“Drum Sessions” not only sparkscreativity but also promotes creativeor ‘out-the-box’ thinking as the Leftand right brain are usedsimultaneously,” said another.

This drumming session windedup when the bar was thrown openand delegates and guests kept enjoyingtill late at night.

Learning and insightDay two of the conference had

two sessions pre-lunch and twosessions post-lunch. Though thedelegates winded quite late at night, yet they were fully present to catchthe first paper of the day. The firstsession of the day started with theopening address by Sandeep Zaverithe Co-Chairman of the LMAIconference committee and YMCPresident. Bhrigav Jain of MonarchGraphics followed him speaking onthe latest technologies related tointermittent presses on behalf of LabelPlanet. In-depth conferencepresentations were delivered by high-profile experts following himincluding a presentation on “Newflexo technology drives leanmanufacturing and sustainability” byJeff Feltz of Mark Andy. Just beforethe coffee break was called, Federicod’Annunzio’s presentation on “Flexov/s Digital” was one worth noting as itimparted more knowledge on the

Panel discussion onpresses

One of the most looked forwardto debate was the “Panel discussionon presses” headed by RogerPellow, MD - LabelexpoGroup and included all themajor press manufacturers onone dias. They providedmore ideas and insights as wellas cleared the airs and doubtsof the printers on the kind ofpresses that would suit theirstyle of business. The final and the last paper in theseries were presented by MichaelBethge of Ahlstrom on “Efforts,

challenges and tasks of the recyclingof siliconised liner”. The Labelindustry has been struggling with thisconcern for years. This was well tackledin this paper.

Party time and a time to say goodbyeAs all good things come to an end,

even this interactive conferenceconcluded with a vote of thanks byAjay Agarwal, Chairman of the LMAIConference Committee. It was timeto party yet again. The delegates weregiven two hours to rest and changeinto casual attires while the eventmanagers Pooja Ghai and her TranquilWorld team got busy in resetting thevenue from the drab conference lookinto something sensational for theevening.

When the guests returned to a newsetting in the hall, it was time for theawards for the sponsors before the

She set the moodby getting the label community on tothe dance floor. Having done this,Manasi left for the DJ to take over andit was fun all the way - all celebratinglike one global family. They werepartying hard, dancing, enjoying tillthe wee hours of the morning.

Success achievedThe LMAI team had targeted the

number of delegates at 125 beforeclosing the bookings at 220.However, the persistence ofdelegates made the LMAIteam reconsider the decisionand despite refusing many, they closed the bookings at270! The organizers, especially Vivek Kapoor andSandeep Zaveri had on theirhands a gigantic task andthey were all set to deliver. And with the help of theevent organizers “TranquilWorld”, they delivered wellto make it a memorable oneto one and all.

The conference was a resoundingsuccess and Sandeep Zaveri was quiteupbeat about it. He said: “We’re verypleased with the success of thisconference and are delighted to haveprovided a forum for debate, ideasgeneration and education about the

A t the Package Printing Zone, organized by Tarsus inHall 12 during LabelExpo 2011, Nuova Gidue S.r.l.unveils the new Food Packaging Program for UV Flexo

developed to support label converters in their introduction intothe flexible packaging industry.

Federico d’Annunzio, MD, discloses the recent installation ata major label converter in Italy of a new Master M5 630 DigitalFlexo press, in line with a totally new development from Gidue, the Master SL 630 Solvent-Less Laminator. “The combination ofUV Flexo and in-line solvent-less lamination is potentiallyrevolutionary for the flexible packaging market. Our solutionavoids any contact of UV inks with the reel (and with the food),by “protecting” the UV printed surface with a laminated filmbefore rewinding. Risks of UV ink migration are virtuallyeliminated. In particular label converters, who know UV flexotechnology since years, could enter the lucrative short-runs flexiblepackaging market, with a limited “learning” curve”, providingexcellent UV flexo print quality.”

The Food Packaging Program for UV Flexo developed byGidue reduces the need of “entry” legal and laboratory costs forfood acceptance certifications. It also increases the overallconverting productivity with a “all-in-one-pass” printing andlaminating process (over 70% of food packaging is laminated). The new Master SL 630 solventless laminator has been developed

focusing on shortset up times,a u t o m a t e doperations, quickchange of thelamination roller,servo driven bi-c o m p o n e n tmixing, semi-automated linearpre-web guide, to

enhance the in-line productivity of the Master M5 630 DigitalFlexo press.

Mr. d’Annunzio concludes:”it could take some time, but thecombination of the Master M5 630 UV flexo press in-line withthe Master SL 630 solventless laminator is a serious opportunityfor label converters looking at new areas of growth. Label converterscould start “one step ahead” by entering the flexible packagingindustry, introducing the narrow web established culture of short-runs efficiency, high print quality and creativity”.

Nuova Gidue S.r.l. will present “live” at LabelExpo, Hall 12Booth 100-110, three new flexographic press lines (Combat M1,Combat M3, Master M5) and one platform with offset modules(Xpannd M7) for the labels and packaging industry.

Smart Papers recently announced that its Kromekote Label60-lb. IN-fusion premium lightweight cast-coated labeland packaging papers are now RIT certified to run on HP

Indigo WS4050, WS4500 and WS6000 label and packagingpresses. Kromekote cast gloss is the first lightweight cast-coatedpaper to be performance certified by RIT for use on HP Indigonarrow web presses. The newly certified products are KromekoteLabel for cut and stack glue-applied labels as well as KromekoteLabel Converting for pressure-sensitive label applications.

The certification from the RIT Printing ApplicationsLaboratory is important for HP Indigo narrow web press ownersin North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific because, for the firsttime, they now have access to premium, high-gloss cast-coatedlabel stock optimized and certified for their equipment. Thisgives HP Indigo press owners the ability to expand their offeringto customers and win new sales and profit opportunities. Pressuresensitive label converters must still qualify their own p/s label

constructions with RIT. Smart Papers said it would provide R&Dsupport to key converting customers.

Smart Papers is one of the world’s top producers of premiumhigh-gloss cast-coated printing papers. Kromekote Label coatedone-side (C1S) applications include standard cut and stack label, wrap or packaging applications and pressure sensitive label stock.RIT is the world’s top printing test laboratory that certifies printingpapers for use on digital printing presses.

The Kromekote Label IN-fusion certification gives HP Indigoowner/operators, specialty label and packaging printers, convertersand paper/packaging distributors confidence that KromekoteLabel performs well on press.

“The results were very good and this is a very good productfor specialty label and packaging printers,” said Tim Richardson, digital printing technologist at RIT and the chief tester ofKromekote Label. “There are no concerns with this product onany front. In addition to providing a new option for label andpackaging printers, this development is important for pressuresensitive label converters,” explained Paul Simpson, executive vicepresident for SMART Papers. “HP Indigo paired with KromekoteIN-fusion produces a compelling label solution for label andpackaging printers, converters and distributors.”

RIT put Kromekote Label 60-lb. IN-fusion through anextensive battery of tests and found that it performed in the highestpossible category for coated substrates. RELEASE LINER MANUFACTURER ITASA INVESTS FOR THE FUTURE AWA BRAND SECURITY CONFERENCE OFFERS A BROAD AGENDA

ITASA (Industrias de Transformación de Andoain), anindependent producer of siliconised release liner in Spain’sBasque country, is investing strongly in more capacity, optimal

manufacturing and finishing quality, and better logistics.New coater: Following the installation of a custom-built,

high-speed 2.3M-wide BMB coater in 2008, the company hasjust installed its ‘twin’ — a new BMB 1.65M-width coater, capableof running at 800 metres per minute, which is now beginningproduction trials. This brings ITASA’s coating capacity to fourmachines, supported by advanced automatic silicone mixing.

Finishing: Complementing the coating capacity are a selectionof slitters at 2.3M and 165mm widths, plus a new machinecapable of slitting narrow-width rolls down to just 20mm and, since around 20% of ITASA’s production requires a customerlogo, two printing machines: one inline, which offers the bestcost/performance solution for volume production; and oneoffline.

Coating capabilities: With ITASA’s current coating capability,high-speed coating of all types of paper release base is possible, from 30gm2 up to 200 gm2 — krafts, PE coateds, clay coateds,C1S and C2S, with equal or differential release characteristics, tomeet the needs of a variety of tape, labelstock, industrial, andcomposite applications as well as self-adhesive graphic arts (at thehighest gram weights) and envelopes and hygiene (at the lowestgram weights).

Current production capacity: CPC is 450 million M2 perannum which, with the commissioning of the new coater, will becloser to 600 million M2. 80% of the company’s production isexported – 50% within Europe, and the balance in the USA,Mexico, and Asia.

New warehousing facility: The company is additionallycurrently in the process of completing a major extension to theirbuilding in Andoain, to create a total of 6,500M2 of dedicatedraw material and finished goods storage – an increase of nearly50%. The project has involved building a special protectiveretaining wall, since the site is on the side of a hill, as well as amassive underground water tank with associated sprinkler systemto meet the requirements of the EU safety regulations. Togetherwith the new machinery, this represents a •20 million investment.

ATLANTIC ZEISER FOCUSES EXPERTISE ON COST EFFECTIVE CERTIFIED LABEL PRINTING SOLUTIONS

A tlantic’s Zeiser’s wealth of technological expertise ishelping label printers create a highly competitive andresponsive offering. At LabelExpo 2011, Brussels,

Atlantic Zeiser will focus on the flexible adoption of the Drop-on-Demand (DoD) Inkjet-Technology while printing variable dataon different label substrates and -formats.

At booth R95 in hall 11 it will highlight its versatile drop-on-demand (DoD) inkjet printing technology in security andcommercial label printing of variable data on different substratesand formats via its integrated DIGILINE Web 300 platform.Other production possibilities being demonstrated will includethe high-speed DELTA 105i greyscale printer outputting fromroll to roll equipped with a VERICAM camera-based verificationsystem guaranteeing zero-defects in the end product. It will printand code, from the roll, industrial labels from its partner, 3M aswell. With a GAMMA 70 P full-colour module for CMYK inkjetprinting, the DIGILINE will also produce industrial labels foranother self-adhesive 3M high-performance film.

3M Partnership Success: Paramount in high quality labelproduction is the choice of substrate which is why Atlantic Zeiserhas partnered with world leading 3M and received particularcertification for use of its printing modules and inks on differentfoils and products. Not only does this certification guaranteeperformance quality but it also highlights the variety of end resultspossible helping printers add value.

3M’s portfolio includes white and silver polyester films resistantto media and friction with matte or gloss surface coatings, whichare ideal for digital UV inkjet printing. Their exceptionally highresistance to ageing makes them the perfect label materials, as theyare able to withstand most chemical reactions.

The challenge for Atlantic Zeiser is how to permanently printthe necessary information on these adhesive substrates. To beable to guarantee performance 3M also subjects selected printingtechnologies to these approvals. This enables the company tooffer combination options for films, printing processes and inksthat label and equipment manufacturers can rely on.

Think Ink: AtlanticZeiser’s combination ofspecially developed inks andenvironmentally friendlyUV-LED curing is virtuallyunbeatable. With its own in-house ink development andproduction departments, ithas considerable expertise, particularly with challengingsurfaces offering low inkadhesion.

Also developed in-housewith the label market inmind is the SmartCure AIRand SmartCure UV-LEDcuring system series forvirtually every printingwidth and printing speed.

The cost-saving systems cure UV inks in an environmentallyfriendly manner thanks to their low energy consumption, absenceof ozone emissions and their operating life that outlasts lamp-based systems by a factor of one to ten. The curing systems areformulated to the flexible printing systems Omega, Delta andGamma families. Together these technologies offer printerscompetitive and reliable solutions to meet the increasingly highperformance criteria end-users expect of their labels.

Cost efficiency benefits: All Atlantic Zeiser solutions deliveroutstanding efficiency and the ability to switch quickly betweenprint jobs to enable users to exploit new business opportunities ina host of industry applications. Designed for maximum flexibilityessential in label printing, they ensure all the required informationis clearly printed on the material while delivering utmost inkdurability, light-fastnessand contrast.

But it is the high levelof security delivered bycoding of security labelslike tax and excise stampsand the track & tracefeatures that enableoperations to deliver anintegrity assured service. At the event AtlanticZeiser will alsodemonstrate how to code tax labels and excise stamps withcommon, individual barcodes and plain-text information at speedsof up to 150 m/min. At the same time it will address the challengeof printing the absorbent special paper for tax labels at maximumspeed with outstanding image quality, so the variable data is easilyread for goods identification.

All standard product tracking codes from GS1, all types ofnumeric codes, and 1-D and 2-D barcodes can be included tocheck the legitimacy of the packaging and product online. Andthe Vericam high-speed camera system automatically reads andverifies the selected layout and checks the digits. If the check codedoes not match the reference data, the module rejects the product.Typical applications include quality control of any font, bar codes1D/2D, numbering and conformity.

Codes for goods tracking and batch identification as well asproduction, usage and expiry data change frequently. This meansthe content of the print layout has to be modified regularly, so theprinting technology must offer maximum variability in settingthe print data. It is this comprehensive array of requirements thatgreatly restricts the technical printing solutions that can be used. The most cost-effective and versatile print technology is industrialDoD inkjet digital printing.

Atlantic Zeiser’s Vice President Digital Systems Ralf Hippcomments: “In such a diverse and competitive market AtlanticZeiser has created a portfolio of solutions that can meet even themost exacting requirements and all to a very high quality. Nomatter what the application end-users can be assured of theintegrity and security provided by these reliable and responsivesolutions.”

CODIMAG TO INTRODUCE VIVA 340 ANIFLO PRESS AT LABEL EXPO

The worldwide debut of the VIVA 340 Aniflo will bepresented with 5 colors plus varnish and will run 4 jobsevery day, to highlight the print consistency and also to

show how easy a color proof can be produced. Codimag willorganize the same presentations as they did 2 years ago wherethey will have a plate making facility on the booth with the AgfaAvalon N4 CtP system and the Toray plate processor.

With the trend toward shorter and shorter runs, intermittentpresses with quick set-up, no cylinder changes and pre-presslimited to plate making are getting more and more suitable forthe market. The VIVA340 is a modular press that can be specifiedaccording to customers’ needs. The VIVA340 is one of the veryfew intermittent presses on the market with all the major printingor finishing processes in line in intermittent mode: Waterlessoffset, Letterpress, Screen-printing, Hot Foil Stamping,Embossing, Flexo Varnishing, Wet Laminating, Die-Cutting.All labels from simple 4 colours label to the very appealing labelsfor wine or cosmetics can be printed in line in one pass on thepress.

Intermittent feed for short and medium run: On theVIVA340 any print length from 5" to 12" can be printedwithout cylinder change thanks to the intermittent technologyand servo control of the web motion. As a result the press isperfect for short and medium run with short make ready andminimal waste.

The main printing technologies used on the VIVA340 for4-colour-process are offset and letterpress. Both processes allowa high level of flexibility on the press. Unlike Flexo, those printtechniques do not rely on anilox rol for ink volume and do notrequire plate mounting with double sided tape. Pre-press islimited to only plate making. With intermittent press the onlyjob-dependent component is the plate. You can stay away fromcostly tools or cassettes for every format.

The VIVA 420 Aniflo will also be presented in combinationwith hot-foil, probably with a wine label design. The ANIFLOprint system is unique to Codimag with an anilox roller feedinga form roller which inks the waterless plate before printing on ablanket and then the web. Codimag also decided to organizesome promotion around waterless offset technology, togetherwith Toray. Codimag will have a brochure available, dedicatedto Toray and Codimag to show their involvement in waterlessoffset.

Toray will be present in the booth and will display differentmaterials and applications printed in waterless offset: plastic cards,in-mould labels, commercial printing, and newspaper printing…Le Figaro, the first French newspaper to be printed waterlessoffset on a KBA Cortina press will be distributed in the boothevery day. This is all to show customers that waterless offset is notonly Codimag, but also many other users. Toray will continue tosupply waterless offset plates and to develop waterless offsettechnology.

Codimag will be in attendance at Label Expo 2011 in booth3429, which is being held in Brussels this year. To find out moreabout Codimag Viva 340, Viva 420 and Codimags involvementin waterless technology visit www.codimag.com.

X eikon will launch a new versionof its QA-I toner in spot red andorange at Labelexpo Europe

2011. The new spot colors feature a vastlyimproved light fastness up to a level of 6on the blue wool scale. In addition, bothcolors now meet FDA food safetyrequirements for both direct and indirectdry food contact. Visitors to the Xeikonstand will also have the opportunity to seefor themselves the results of a recent lightfastness benchmarking test, whichconfirms Xeikon as the best performingdigital printing technology on the market.

When Xeikon first released the QA-Itoner at IPEX 2010, it raised the bar ofdigital color print toners to new heights.Uniquely developed for the label andpackaging market, the new toner featuredmajor advances in color gamut, fastlightness and food safety. It was releasedin all the standard CMYK process colorsalong with a series of off-the-shelf spotcolors (orange, green, red, blue, extramagenta, clear and white). At the time, however, the performance of spot orange

and red lagged slightly behind therest of the family in both

light fastness and food safety. Since thatinitial release, the toner R&D group atXeikon has continued to optimize thepigments used in the toner and havenow lifted both colors up to be in linewith Xeikon’s traditionally highstandards.

“Red and orange are both used a lotin the chemical industry,” says FilipWeymans, Marketing & BusinessDevelopment Manager, Labels &Packaging at Xeikon. “For example:Warning signs placed on the outside oflarge drums carrying potentiallydangerous contents typically use thesetwo colors and they are often exposed toUV light for long periods of time. Withthe light fastness of both colors nowlifted to 6 on the blue wool scale, labelscreated with QA-I toner can easier meetthe demanding requirements of thismarket.”

During the same period, the R&Dteam also focused heavily on improvingthe food safety performance of the twoQA-I spot colors. When first released, they met the FDA requirements forindirect food contact. By optimizing thecolor pigments, they now meet FDArequirement for both indirect and directdry food contact. The new release of QA-I toner in both spot red and orange willstart shipping as from Labelexpo Europe2011 (i.e. from 1 September 2011).

“The raised performance of bothlight fastness and food safety of the twospot colors now enables label printers tobroaden the range of applications theycan offer,” adds Weymans.

will also be able to observe – first hand– the results of a benchmarkingexercise that was conducted recentlybetween different digital printingtechnologies. During the exercise, which was carried out by anindependent printer, three identicallabels were printed on the samematerial using three differenttechnologies: UV inkjet, liquid tonerand Xeikon’s dry QA-I toner. Eachlabel, lying side-by-side, was exposedto 800 hours of sunshine during the4 months of April to August this year.

The deltaE, which is the unit ofmeasure of color difference, wasmeasured for seven different colors ofeach label. At the end of the 800hours, the deltaE of the Xeikon printed

sample was significantly less across allseven colors. The results clearlyreaffirmed Xeikon’s high standard ofquality in light fastness with an averagedeltaE of 7.6. This compared to 12.2for inkjet-printed label and 37.3 forthe alternative liquid toner technology.

Xeikon will exhibit at LabelexpoEurope 2011 in Hall 9, Stand 45. design detail are standard requirementson printing jobs.

ClearLogic, the user interface, features user-friendly screens thatrequire fewer touches, removing muchof the complexity potentially involvedin the set-up process. The packaging-specific software accompanying thesystem is compatible with a wide rangeof materials and die-cutting processes. This is highly beneficial to a companylike Positive Packaging, which convertsmany opaque, transparent andreflective substrates, such as BOPP,metalized film, high-gloss castpolypropylene film.

The system offers fast set-up timesof just a few minutes, even whenchanging to a different substrate typeand thickness. This simplicity is idealfor an environment like PositivePackaging where productivitydepends on minimal downtime asnearly half of the company’s jobs arebetween 25,000 and 30,000 linearmeters.

Autotron’s mark-recognitionsystem helps reduce make-ready wasteby locking on to even low-contrastmarks at make-ready. It provides securemark localization and a quick transitionto the new production substratewithout needing to stop the press. Inthis way, makeready waste can beconfined to a few hundred web-meters.

A key factor in the decision toinvest in the Autotron 2600 systemwas the close relationship that PositivePackaging has enjoyed withQuadTech for many years.“QuadTech’s technical support crewprovides training sessions so that theoperators can exploit the fullpotential of the system from thebeginning. We also receive on-line remote diagnostics, toprevent any problems from

emerging,” Mr. PraneshKankanwadi explained.
