4 juillet 2012. Date historique. Cejour-là, l’homme a vu l’invisible,touché l’immatériel, côtoyé l’abso-lu.

Develop technical staff: wider know-how, targeted recruitments
Pursue science in fields of excellence & well-established know-how
Understand and constrain evolution of various types of stars
Increase γ-ray astronomy expertise: Fermi, H.E.S.S.; future: SVOM, CTA
Strengthen MHD expertise: recruit numerical expert
Develop theory ! experiments: dark matter, LHC, primordial universe

Strategy and 5-year plan (2)
Diversify reasonably the IN2P3 (first funding body) core activity IN2P3 => main funding body for staff and projects
Rely on specific know-how:
technical => data, calibration, spectroscopy,
scientific => multi-λ analysis, data ! theory & modelling interaction
Local synergies:
Labex OCEVU & scope of IN2P3 (fundamental issues)
e.g. => cosmology & dark matter (part. in LSST being investigated)
Help emergence of science at interface between teams

Labex OCEVU: a regional framework of international scale, incentive
Strengths and weaknesses Local • Transverse simulation and computing activity • Strong involvement in labex OCEVU, but hard to be on same footing as big labs • Cosmos, Fields and Particles master: attractive but < 1/yr PhD grant from ED • A specific synergy: experiments/observations ! theory/modelling & simulation National • Organisation of scientific meetings, workshops and international conferences • Competence in distributed scientific computing but quite small node • A visible IN2P3 core activity, but resting on a unusually small team • Some contact and work with industry but no technology transfer…
International • Construction and/or exploitation of world-class instruments:
⇒ H.E.S.S., Fermi, CTA, VLT, Gaia, HST, LHC… • Part in large collaboration networks, but marginal part in European networks

Opportunities and threats Local • Fertile scientific framework for emergence of common research themes
• Association of the LUPM to the OSU OREME: sharing & development of common technical resources from Labex OCEVU;
• Institut de Physique de Montpellier helps: transverse relations theoreticians ! experimentalists of two physics UMRs ; follow-up real estate project to group all physics, « Plan Campus »;
• The LUPM research topics are not « Région Languedoc-Roussillon » priorities (e.g. co-financed doctoral positions), but well visible for UM2, and starting to be for local authorities (President of Région, préfet de Région, Mayor, DRRT)
National • A good help from « programmes d’excellence », not fully compensating reduced budgets
from funding institutes (University and CNRS) -10% / yr => -40% in 5 yr ! • Difficulties getting new technical staff & pursue development of young LUPM International • High quality international scientific partners, in a general context of shrinking state funds
