Dear FCIT affiliates,I am pleased to put in your hands the FCIT Computer Labs. and Technical Sup-port Guide which introduces the General and Specialized Labs. of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology. In addition to the facilities and ser-vices provided by the Labs. and Technical Support Unit to the FCIT affiliates and students.

I would like also to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the members of the Labs. and Technical Support Unit for their great efforts to develop and facilitate the academic jobs of the FCIT affiliates and students.

Introduction

Our Goals1. Participating in the success of the educational process through preparing well-equipped computer labs. that meet the requirements of the various cours-es provided by the FCIT.2. Providing a high quality technical support to all the FCIT affiliates in rela-tion to the various technical services and facilities provided in the FCIT.3. Reducing the time spent on getting the technical problems solved.4. Creating a database that includes solutions to the common technical prob-lems and programs settings.5. Supporting the Deanship of Information Technology’s policy in terms of ap-plying the special configurations of the KAU’s network and software applica-tions.6. Providing training to the FCIT affiliates in relation to using technology in everyday life.7. Building a professional team for the technical support services.

The Labs. and Technical Support Unit is mainly concerned with maintaining and troubleshooting the computer labs. of the FCIT and to keep them up-to-date and to provide the required software programs. It aims to provide an ad-equate technical support to the FCIT affiliates including the academic staff members and the administration personnel. The Unit is also concerned with updating the new technologies being used at the FCIT and to make them avail-able to the FCIT affiliates and students in order to improve the educational process in general.

Computer Labs. of the FCIT The Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (Boys’ Campus) has eleven computer labs. which started as general labs. and they become special-ized labs. due to the advancement in the courses of the three main Academic Departments of the FCIT in the year 1430/1431. Currently, the FCIT has six specialized labs. as follows:

1. Databases Lab.2. Networks Labs.3. Software Development Lab.4. Matlab & Maple Lab.5. Web Development Lab.6. Analysis and Design Lab.

Efforts are continued to open more new specialized labs. in addition to devel-oping the current labs. to meet the FCIT aspirations and the various course requirements.

What is video-conferencing?Video conferencing is a communica-tions technology that integrates video and audio to connect users anywhere in the world as if they were in the same room.

Uses:1. Holding seminars and M.S. Theses Discussions.2. Holding joint meetings between the Boys’ and Girls’ campuses.3. Holding meetings and Departments’ Councils.4. Transmitting lectures to the boys’ Campus.

How can I get this service in the FCIT?The FCIT has five video conferencing sets:1. Mobile Video Conferencing Set (for the Offices):

This video conferencing device has a small display monitor which is used to hold small office meetings or to trans-mit lectures to the Girls’ Campus di-rectly from the academic member’s office.2. Fixed Video Conferencing Devices:In Fixed Video Conferencing Devices, the video is displayed on the projector screen. Microphones are also mounted in the room to catch sound in addition to speakers. Fixed Video Conferencing Devices are found in the Main Audi-torium, in Lab. 27 and in the Meeting rooms.3. How can I request this facility?There are four simple steps to request this facility:1. Specify the date and avenue of the meeting.2. Identify the other party’s infor-mation such as (IP Address) and the phone number of the Communication Technician.3. Contact Technical Support Unit.

Any user of the FCIT Computer labs. can make use of the printers available for educational purposes. Users have to log in using their accounts on the univer-sity system.

Terms of using the printers:1. Printing service is found for educa-tional purposes only.2. Providing sheets papers to feed the printer. 3. Try to print on both faces of the sheet of paper in order to help protect the environment.

About the FCIT Technical Support:The Labs. and Technical Support Unit is the first link that provides technical support services to the FCIT affiliates and students while using the FCIT com-puters and facilities either inside labs. or in the affiliates’’ offices, in addition to the FCIT laptops . The Labs. and Technical Support Unit endeavors to provide immediate solutions to the technical problems as soon as possible and forwards the service request to the specialized sections in case the problem still exists. The Labs. and Technical Support Unit follows up and arranges with the other parties until the request is fulfilled.

Our Technical Support Ser-vices include:• Configuring new installations and electronic devices (Computers, print-ers, scanners…. Etc).• Installing software, and configuring their settings according to the KAU’s policy settings.• Configuring the KAU mail service on the Outlook Mail System.• Connecting the computers and in-tranets to the KAU network.• Troubleshooting the computer hard-ware problems.• Troubleshooting Operating Systems and software problems.• Providing training for the employ-ees if required.• Helping users to use the new devic-es and peripherals such as the Smart Board, and projectors.• Helping users in using the FCIT equipment and devices such as the Smart Board and projectors...etc.

FCIT Annual Procurement OrderThe Labs. and Technical Support Unit tries its best to provide the academic members with all the software pro-grams and equipment required for their lab. courses:

How do I apply for Lab. re-quirements for my course:1. Fill in the Form “Requesting Lab. Requirements”. Form L.R. 102.2. Get the Form duly signed by the Head of your Department.

When to apply for Lab. re-quirements?Usually an update is circulated by the Heads of the Academic Departments to all their members about the start of application for any Lab. require-ments.

Where to find the Form?You can find the “Requirements Provi-sion Form” at the Labs. and Technical Support Unit.

How soon my Lab. require-ments will be provided?1. After being studied, your applica-tion will be enrolled within the next lab. Requirements Order.2. It should be taken into account that the lab. equipment orders are made once annually. Therefore, requests should be fully completed and duly signed by the Supervisors of the Aca-demic Departments within a sufficient period of time before placing the whole FCIT annual purchase order.

2. The FCIT Help Desk has provided a document camera (Epson Brand – Model: elpdc06) that can be connected to a Windows PC to create a slideshow on paper. This document camera can be used in lectures, meetings and sem-inars. Therefore, in case you want to make use of this document camera in your lectures, you can ask for it from the Help Desk, Lab. No. 30 . As soon as you finish using it, you are kindly re-quested to return it so that it can be made use of by all the academic mem-bers.

Services and Facilities Available for the Academic Members

1. The FCIT Help Desk has provided a Laptop (HP Netbook) and a Projector (Hitachi) for every Academic Department in the Faculty.Therefore, in case you want to make use of these facilities in your lectures, you can ask for them from the Secretary Office of your Departments. As soon as you finish using them, you are kindly requested to return them so that they can be made use of by all the academic members.

3. The FCIT Help Desk has provided the FTP Service which can be used by the FCIT academic members to ease the process of reaching their files everywhere within the Univer-sity network. It is worth noting that this service can be only accessed using the FTP Software found on the FCIT Server.

5. The Help Desk has provided a wire-less internet connector (Quick MyFi Gadget) which can be used in places where no Internet access is available. Five users can connect to this device at the same time using the WiFi Tech-nology.Therefore, in case you want to make use of this gadget in your lectures, you can ask for it from Help Desk in Lab No. 30.After using it, you are kindly request-ed to return it to the person in charge so that it can be made use of by all the academic members.

4. The FCIT Help Desk has provided a digital camera (Nikon Brand) to be used in meetings, seminars, lectures and dur-ing visits.Therefore, in case you want to make use of this camera in your lectures, you can ask for it from the Help Desk, Lab. No. 30 . As soon as you finish using it, you are kindly requested to return it so that it can be made use of by all the academic members.

6. The Help Desk has provided a USB 3G Internet Modem which can be used in places where no Internet access is available. Therefore, in case you want to make use of this gadget in your lectures, you can ask for it from the Help Desk in Lab No. 30.
