FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Jewellery? Apart from a wristwatch and one plain stud in each earlobe for female students, NO jewellery is to be worn. Items that are confiscated will be available for the student to collect in the last week of term; parent(s)/care-giver(s) may wish to collect items at an earlier date.

Make up? Nail polish and obvious make up are not permitted. Removal products will be made available at school.

Shoes? The only acceptable types of footwear to be worn at school are black leather lace-up shoes (made with a heel - i.e., flat-soled shoes are NOT permitted), and black Roman sandals. Sports shoes are required only for Physical Education and sports activities.

Over the course of the year, the Deputy Principal has confiscated non-uniform types of footwear and lent the student a pair of second-hand shoes of the approved style. The non-uniform shoes are retained by him until the borrowed shoes are returned. Any of the confiscated shoes which are not reclaimed by their owners will be donated to charity at the end of the school year

Shirts? Shirts are always to be tucked in, except for girls when they are wearing no other item over their shirt, e.g. jersey.

Hats? No hats are to be worn inside the school buildings.

Headbands? Only plain white, black or navy blue headbands are to be worn.

Scarves? Only plain black or navy blue scarves may be worn when outside.

Hairstyles? Hairstyles are to be clean, tidy and conservative: one natural hair colour, limited use of hair products. Hair should not be below the eyebrow. Students may be asked to tie back long hair. Boys must display no facial hair. The Principal is the final arbiter.

Mufti Day Dress Standards? Students are expected to dress in a clean, tidy and modest manner. Students’ dress should reflect a positive image of themselves and LAC and have no reference to unacceptable behaviour, e.g. alcohol. No jewellery, obvious make up, jandals, work boots or gumboots. The Principal is the final arbiter.

If at any time your student cannot wear full and correct uniform, please send a note with an explanation. The student should present the note to the Deputy Principal to receive a uniform pass for the day.

LAPTOPS AND TABLETS AT COLLEGE 2014

An increasing number of students are choosing to bring laptops or a tablet to college. This is an option that is open to Year 9–13 students and will increasingly become the norm. With the college connecting to N4L (Network for Learning) sometime in 2014, the use of laptops or tablets as tools of learning will become increasingly beneficial. The government is investing a huge amount to ensure schools make use of ultra-fast broadband (UFB) and this is opening an increasing number of teaching and learning possibilities. The college has recently made the decision to go with ‘google docs’ to deliver information to students, and a recent Ministry of Education agreement with Microsoft means that next year ‘Windows Office 365’ is available free of charge to students for their own laptop or tablet. Some factors that need to be considered before students choose to bring a laptop or tablet for use at college:

It needs to be a device that can connect to the college wireless network to be an effective learning tool.

Tablets smaller than 10” are unacceptable. Anything smaller than this will make it difficult for students to input data.

Both laptops and tablets need to be brought with a case to protect them when not in use.

Tablets are far more useful if they include a case that has a built-in keyboard; this will allow much better input of data.

Students are responsible for the security and proper use of their device while at college and the device can be confiscated and held if it is being used improperly.

All students will be required to sign the new ‘Digital Citizen Agreement’ in 2014. A copy of this agreement will be available on our website and it governs the use of electronic devices at college.

LAC POLICY RE STUDENTS’ CELLPHONES

Please note that the school will take NO responsibility for loss of or damage to cellphones at school. The college has a clear policy on student use of cellphones at school, and the reasons for this policy are:

Page 7: Lac newsletter december 2013

Email: [email protected]

www.lac.school.nz

To ensure that distractions from teaching and learning are minimised so that our students are focused on their learning.

To minimise the chances of unwise cellphone use leading to more serious discipline, personal and legal issues.

We are extremely grateful for parent support of the college policy on cellphone use at college. Any instances of serious text bullying outside of school hours should be reported to the local police. THE POLICY IS AS FOLLOWS:

Only Year 13 students are permitted to bring cell phones to school and may use them (in a discreet and appropriate manner) out of class time.

Other students may bring their cell phones to school; however, these cell phones must be handed into the office each day before school, and picked up after school.

Our staff have been instructed to confiscate cell phones when the owner is in breach of these regulations, and the phone can be picked up by a parent/caregiver of the student, or returned to the student at the end of the school term.

When cell phones are confiscated from students, the student owner of the cell phone could be required to copy out in his/her own handwriting and sign a statement that outlines the college policy on cell phone use and the reasons for this policy.

TRUANCY/LATENESS

For the majority of LAC students, absenteeism and lateness are not concerns; however, for a minority they are significant concerns. As a school we have implemented the ‘Rock On’ programme which identifies the different actions we take and incorporates a range of different agencies outside of school. The purpose of this programme is to assist those students and families who need help to get students to school and on time.

ABSENCE REPORTING If your child is absent from school, please leave a message on the Absence Voicemail. This is the only method that can guarantee that the information gets to the appropriate staff in a timely manner.

DAY SCHOOL BUSES The day school buses cover several different routes around Palmerston North. Please refer to separate page in this newsletter.

STUDENT HANDBOOK

The handbook is available on the school’s website. Although the student homework diary contains a summary of information on school procedures, rules and expectations, the handbook is the source of the most comprehensive information.

ACCESS TO SCHOOL OFFICE

Students are NOT to access the administration/classroom/office through the main front doors unless they are accompanied by a parent/caregiver or staff member.

SIGN-OUT PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS LEAVING

CAMPUS DURING THE DAY

It is imperative that during the school day we are at all times able to keep track of the whereabouts of our students, to ensure their safety.

Consequently, all students leaving the campus outside of normal opening/closing times must be signed out by a parent/caregiver at reception.

If someone other than the main parent/caregiver (as listed on the school database) is to pick up a student, a note must be provided which has been signed by the parent/caregiver, giving authority, and reception staff may also need to phone the parent/caregiver to verify this before releasing the student.

Reception staff are authorised to ask for proof of identity of anyone signing a student out.

If the student returns to school before the end of the day, he/she must sign in at the office upon arrival.

STUDENTS DRIVING VEHICLES TO SCHOOL

Applications must be renewed each year; they do not carry

over automatically. Parents/caregivers will be required to countersign

each renewal.

All requests for the use of vehicles by students must be submitted to and verified by the Deputy Principal.

The only permission given is for students to drive to and from school. Students will not be permitted to leave the campus in their vehicles in the course of the school day (for example: for the buying of meals from the local dairy or any other food venue (please note also that food is not permitted to be ordered for delivery to the school); the buying of petrol or school materials; for going on any STAR course or excursions).

Applications for this privilege must be made on the correct form, which is obtainable from the Deputy Principal. When submitting the completed form, the driver's licence must be made available for sighting, and a copy will be retained for our files.

Applications for the carrying of passengers by student drivers (if their licence permits this) must be submitted for consideration by LAC Management, and must be accompanied by authorisation from a parent of the passenger and a parent of the driver.

Any infringement of the above conditions will result in the driving privilege being immediately cancelled.

OFFICE HOURS DURING SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

The school office will be closing at 2pm on Wednesday 18 December 2013 and will reopen at 9am on Monday 13 January 2014.
