filters do. That means less maintenance

and easy cleaning. For larger ponds, the

Koi Clear Vortex Biological Pond Filter

uses super thick coils of Matala Filter

Media. Both these filters are modular so

you can use more than one if your pond

needs it or add more later as your fish

breed and grow.

If you've already got a pond filter that isn't

working well, you can improve it by adding

some Matala as the sheets can be easily

cut to size to replace worn out foam.

sheet of medium density, Green Filter Media.

The Mini Fall is a simple way to add a waterfall to your pond and the

included media filters out materials that you wouldn’t want flowing through.

Another great use for Matala Premium Filter

Media is pre-filtration. EzBio Prefilters attach to

the intake side of submersible pumps. They can

be attached directly to the pump or connected

with a hose or pipe. That means you can have

the filter at the edge of the pond so it's easy to

clean. EzBio Prefilters prevent clogging, reduce

maintenance, extend the life of your pump while

giving the pond a biological filtration boost.

Matala Filter Media Sheets can make great grow beds for plants, fruit, vegetables and flowers. They can provide useful growing media for ponds, dams, hydroponics or aquaponics systems.

Filter Media Sheets are a great way to

In Sept '17 I installed a 'Blagdon 14000' water filtration system into my 50000 litre fish pond first filled and stocked with about 50 Comet goldfish the year before. After introducing the fish - with no

filter, but with an aerator, the water slowly turned an undesirable shade of green.

So, the Blagdon was installed, running 24/7 and over the next two years did a fair job of keeping the water

reasonably clean - not 'clear', but clean. During summers the soft foam filters were removed and

hosed clean every 5 - 7 days. Over winter it was every 14-21 days.

Around Oct '19 the foam filters were falling apart and needed replacing, but none were available. Looking for alternative filter media I discovered

Matala sold by Love My Pond. I bought a half sheet each of blue (fine) and green (medium), easily cut them to the required sizes and put them in place.

By Xmas the pond water was noticeably clearer and by January looked clean enough to drink! I am very

pleased with Matala filter media.

While I’m sure this Matala Filter Media is a great addition to your filter system and supports the bioload to keep the pond in balance, I can’t really comment on that. What I can say though is if you are looking for an inert reticulated PE-based media to slice up and install into your DIY vertical hydroponic towers then you, like I, can stop your search here.

My delicious greens needed something that their delicate roots could weave their way into, that the nutrient solution could filter through, and that could be made to fit inside a bit of down pipe. I scoured the depths of the internet searching for something, anything that would have my balcony towers ready for the 2020 salad season. Amazon, eBay, even Alibaba – nope. Even the bloke at the local foam shop told me that there wasn’t a product in the market like it.

Well suffice it to say that when I came to lovemypond browsing pumps and fittings I was moved when I saw the photo of that squiggly black plastic spaghetti sheet. I mean not quite to tears, but it was an emotional moment. I had to buy it.

I’ve had the black Matala in my towers since September and my first round of greens were delicious. Flow through the media is excellent, and it is flexible enough that you can sandwich two slices into a pipe. Plants root well in the media and I think it will be easily cleaned for the following season with the high pressure sprayer.
