National Hispanic Heritage Month began this week to celebrate Latinos and their culture and history. Started as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson, it was expanded to a month by President Ronald Reagan and enacted into law in 1988. Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica celebrated their independence days Monday followed by Mexico today and Chile on Thursday. The U.S. Hispanic population now stands at over 54.1 million, making them the nation’s second- largest racial or ethnic group. Today Hispanics make up 17% of the U.S. population, up from 5% in 1970. People of Mexican origin account for two- thirds (34 million) of the nation’s Latinos. Those of Puerto Rican origin are the next largest group at 4.9 million (with another 3.5 million on the island of Puerto Rico). There are five other Hispanic origin groups with more than 1 million people each: Cubans, Salvadorans, Dominicans, Guatemalans and Colombians. There is diversity among Latino origin groups in major metro areas. Mexicans make up 78% of Latinos in the Los Angeles area but, in the New York City area, Puerto Ricans (28%) and Dominicans (21%) are the largest groups. Meanwhile, Salvadorans (32%) are most numerous in the Washington, D.C., metro area, and Cubans (54%) are the largest group in Miami. The communication activities at Lackland Elementary have been renamed and revamped! The Journalism Club now encompasses the Eagle Eye News morning broadcast, what was the Remote News Team, and the elementary

yearbook under the direction of Miss Cara Coffey as Journalism Sponsor.

The Eagle Eye News broadcasts daily to classrooms Pre-K through 6th grade so students can collectively participate in the pledges of allegiance, a daily patriotic song, and a moment of silence. Students also hear the daily lunch menu and the weather forecast. Soon, the broadcast will include segments

such as "Healthy Habits" from our district nurses and "Weekly Words of Wisdom" from administrative staff. Other segments featuring library news,

technology resources, and celebrations around campus are also in the works.

Students participating in Eagle Eye News must be at school by 7:15 in the morning to run through the daily broadcast and discuss any changes or

additions to the normal show. Students also meet on Mondays after school to create special segments like the ones mentioned above. All positions for the live portion of the club are currently filled but students in 4th-6th who

are interested in participating in the recorded segments can apply with Miss Coffey.

Journalism Club students are also the resident photographers on campus. They will be snapping candids for the yearbook as well learning

different photography techniques in regards to staging and lighting.

Picture Day! Friday, Sept 12 was annual picture day on the Stacey Campus. Photographers from Inter-State studios arrived in the Lyon Center before 7:00 AM to set up

their 2 cameras. The first camera was for the school pictures of 7th-11th graders and staff members. The second was dedicated to the seniors. They took a cap-n-gown as well as a formal portrait. “Things ran pretty smoothly, we finished right

at lunchtime”, said yearbook adviser Mr. Russell Keller, “a big thanks to teachers and office staff for their patience and cooperation in getting everyone down to the Lyon Center. Also a big thanks to Mrs. MK for helping getting the

seniors prepped and groomed.” Retakes will be on October 17, again in the Lyon Center.

LISD Profile

Alena Keene-Carlson Library Specialist

Mrs. Keene-Carlson is originally from Nebraska. She attended Creighton University in Omaha.

Go Jays! After graduating with her Bachelor’s in Spanish and receiving certification in teaching, she taught English at a public primary school in Madrid, Spain, for two years. ¡Qué

bien!

While working on a Master’s degree in Language Teaching, Mrs. Keene-Carlson taught Spanish to college students in Kansas and then Kindergarten through 5th grade students in

Nebraska. She moved to San Antonio in 2012 and has taught Spanish at a middle school for the past two years. Mrs. Keene-Carlson loves to read. She especially loves children’s fiction

novels and picture books. She believes that you are never too old to read a picture book. Mrs. KC (as some students call her) tries to incorporate singing, movement, and

technology into her lessons and activities . . . yes, even in the library. She is excited to join the Lackland team as she works on her Master’s in Library Science. Come sing and read with

Mrs. Keene-Carlson in the Media Center!

Other things to know about Mrs. KC:

She loves to travel and take photos! She really wants a puppy (but her husband says “no”).

Her favorite season is Autumn. Her favorite colors are red, turquoise, and navy blue.

Her favorite foods are mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, chips and salsa, and caramel apples . . . but not all together.

She has many favorite books, but here are just a few: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, The One and Only Ivan by K.A. Applegate, Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride by Pam Muñoz Ryan, Flora and the Flamingo by Molly Idle, Ball by

Mary Sulivan, and Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey.

Students in Ms. Street’s Science class work collaboratively in pairs on a lab to determine whether flipping a penny and spinning a penny will yield different end results. “When you flip a penny into the air a hundred times, probability tells us that it will most likely land on heads half the time and tails half the time. When

you spin a penny 100 times, you get an entirely different result.” Students conducted an experiment, collected data, completed tabulation data tables and examined the results to prove whether or not the given statement was true and

possible reasons why.

Meet Ryan! Ryan was born in Alaska and has also lived in

both North and South Carolina – he says he isn’t used to the

Texas heat. He is an only child and likes to cook. His dreams

are to either be an NFL champion or to work for

Microsoft.

This past week the Stacey Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness students had the opportunity to visit the Product Extravaganza hosted by Region

20. During the field trip, students were able to visit with food vendors as well as sample their products. They learned about new nutrition

guidelines that school districts have to abide by and the benefits of them. Students were able to suggest their favorite items to the Lackland

Food Service director, Mr. Concha. Since students had unlimited food samples, they considered this the best field trip ever.

grade classrooms to introduce students to MackinVia and all of

our ebooks.

Lackland Mentor Program On Wednesday, September 17th the Lackland Elementary Mentor Program kicked

off with a bang! The Mentoring Program exists to help our students reach their potential while succeeding in school. It also gives our school district another way to connect

with our military community. This is accomplished by matching Lackland active duty or base civilian adult volunteers with our students, one on one. We meet

on a monthly basis to help make a positive impact on our students as they encourage healthy choices, promote high self-esteem, encourage academic

achievement and introduce new hobbies and experiences. Nearly 20 volunteers from the Security Forces Division committed to working

with our students this year. Yesterday the students had a chance to meet their mentors for the first

time! They had a great time getting to know each other while playing board games and sharing a snack!

We look forward to a fun and exciting Mentor Program this year. Jennifer Dominguez

Lackland ISD E-News Recycling Page 10 of 13 www.lacklandisd.net Sept. 19, 2014

Below are some of the latest facts about recycling:

(You CAN make a difference!!!)

Each person creates about 4.7 pounds of waste every single day.

In the US, 33.4% of solid waste is either recycled or composted, 12.6% is burned in combustion

facilities and 54% makes its way into landfills.

In 2007 99% of lead acid batteries were recycled, 54% of paper and paperboard were recycled,

64% of yard trimmings are recycled and nearly 35% of metals were recycled.

The amount of recycling in 2007 saved the energy equivalent of 10.7 billion gallons of gasoline

and prevented the release of carbon dioxide of approximately 35 million cars.

The numbers of landfills in the US are decreasing while their size is increasing. In 1998 there

were 8,000 landfills but only 1,754 in 2007.

Each ton of mixed paper that is recycled can save the energy equivalent to 185 gallons of

gasoline.

Approximately 8,660 curbside recycling programs exist in the United States.

There are about 3,510 community composting programs in the United States.

Disposal of waste to landfills has decreased from 89% in 1980 to 54% in 2007.

Recycling 1 ton of aluminum cans conserves the equivalent of 1,665 gallons of gasoline.

In 2007 the United States recycled and composted 85 million tons of the 254 million tons of

municipal solid waste created.
