I hope that the start of 2016 finds you and yours happy and healthy. Travel is my middle name this quarter! In December, I visited Branches in Portland and Roseburg Oregon and in Siverdale and Dungeness, Washington. My role on these visits was as Goodwill Ambassador. Several of the Branches had Units in the past and I engaged with leadership to determine whether we had an opportunity to re- institute them. Stay tuned! Along with members from Branch and Unit 46, I was also delighted to welcome National President, Helen Courneya, and FRA National President, Virgil Courneya, to Pearl Harbor for the Remembrance Day ceremonies. It is always a pleasure hosting them. On January 8, I will depart Hawaii for Washington State once again. Following is the schedule for my Unit visits: 9 Jan: Seattle Unit 18 12 Jan: Bremerton Unit 29 13 Jan: Everett Unit 170 15 Jan: Whidbey Island Unit 97 I am looking forward to visiting and spending time in fellowship with our Auxiliary members. Included in this edition of the newsletter is an updated Regional Convention Notice, provided to us by Convention Chair, Mary Archer. Convention is going to be a little earlier than usual this year, so please plan ahead. It’s important for as many Units as possible to be represented by delegates. Keep an eye out for discount flights or consider making a road trip of it and get a group together to share the driving. In order for you to get to know the other regional officers, I have changed the format of the newsletter a bit . Let us know what you think! Yours in Loyalty, Protection & Service, LAFRANorthwest

Greetings, Auxiliary Members,

Happy New Year! I hope that the start of 2016 finds you and yours happy and healthy.

Travel is my middle name this quarter! In December, I visited Branches in Portland and Roseburg Oregon and in Siverdale and Dungeness, Washington. My role on these visits was as Goodwill Ambassador. Several of the Branches had Units in the past and I engaged with leadership to determine whether we had an opportunity to re-institute them.

Following is the schedule for my Unit visits:

9 Jan: Seattle Unit 18 12 Jan: Bremerton Unit 29 13 Jan: Everett Unit 170 15 Jan: Whidbey Island Unit 97

I am looking forward to visiting and spending time in fellowship with our Auxiliary members.

Membership & Retention

RVP Renee Shaw Pearl Harbor - Honolulu

Unit 46

Aloha and Happy New Year! My name is Renee Shaw and I am the Northwest Regional Vice President. My main responsibility in this role is recruitment and retention. I can’t stress enough how important it is for us to grow our membership in order to reverse the downward trend we’ve experienced over the years. We all need to work together in order to retain our current members and recruit new members. Those who have served our auxiliary faithfully for so many years are ready and willing to train new members to follow in their footsteps, but we have to have folks there

who are ready and willing to serve in their place . Without new members, this will never happen and we risk losing more units as a result. It is equally important that we retain our current members. In an effort to assist in this regard, I make telephone calls each month to those whose memberships are about to expire. If I am unable to reach them by phone, I then send post cards to remind members that their dues are now going to expire or have expired. The challenge in this, however, is that many members do not keep their contact information updated. Please remember to update your information any time that it changes in order that we can stay in contact with you. We do not want to lose any members due to inaccurate information on file at our offices. Did you know that for every member that joins the FRA, the LAFRA has the opportunity to gain up to 16 new members? These members can be spouses, parents, children, grandchildren, widows, widowers and siblings. Consider working with your Branch to ensure that each Shipmate’s family is actively involved in the LA FRA. A key to healthy recruitment is to make all prospective members feel welcome. If we can recruit these new members and get them involved in our units, then our membership numbers will grow and we can make the LAFRA bigger and better! In closing, please remember to take the time to tell people about the LA FRA any time that you have the opportunity. Recruit and retain!!!! Yours in Loyalty, Protection and Service, Renee Shaw, RVPNW

From the Chaplain’s Pen Welcome to the new year I hope it finds everyone in good health and happiness. I'm Manda the Northwest Regional Chaplain. I am looking forward to the new year and the opportunity to serve the Northwest Region.

There have been two condolence cards and one get well card that have been sent out to the families or members of the Auxiliary.

Remember that with a new year it is not about changing the date on the calendar but more of taking a direction, challenging ourselves to take new steps that we didn't think we could take in the past year.

Notifications and requests can be sent to either my physical address or my email address:
