We begin the beautiful season of Lent, our annual ob-servance for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Re-pentance and baptism take center stage once again in the life of the Church. This beautiful season disposes both the catechumens of the universal Church and the faith-ful of the Church to embrace and celebrate the pas-chal mystery —dying and rising with Christ. The cate-chumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the Rite of Election, the Scrutinies, and a deep catechetical reflection. The faithful are called to listen more intently to the word of God and to devote ourselves to prayers, to prepare ourselves through a spirit of repentance to renew our baptismal promises. Today we celebrate with eight of our catechumens who have been chosen by Archbishop Gregory among the Elect of Christ. I ask that you keep them in your prayers in a very spe-cial way as they continue their last period of preparation before they are initiated into the faith through the sacraments of Bap-tism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Also today as we do every year around this time, we have our special collection for the Black and Indian Missions in the United States. Our support to this national collection helps sisters and brothers in the rural areas in the South, in the de-serts of the Southwest and in parts of Alaska. Tomorrow evening, in preparation to renew our baptismal promises at Easter, we will have the opportunity to celebrate reconciliation. Our Penance Reconciliation Service starts at 7:00 p.m. and as usual a few priests from the neighboring parishes will be available to hear confessions. Finally, I want to invite all of you to once again participate in a Lenten journey with the Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl to help provide assistance to poor and suffering people in many areas of the world. The theme for this year’s journey is “We are called forth from the desert to encounter resurrection.” The theme reminds us that the journey through the desert ultimately leads to resurrection. I hope that all of us will participate again in this Lenten program either by contrib-uting to, reflecting on and/or praying for those in need. May you have a blessed and fruitful Lenten season,

Comenzamos la hermosa época de la Cuaresma, nuestra práctica anual para ascender a la cima sagrada de Pascua. Una vez más el

arrepentimiento y el bautismo toman el lugar principal en la vida de la Iglesia. Esta hermosa época predispone tanto a los catecúmenos de la Iglesia universal como a los fieles de la Iglesia para acoger y celebrar el misterio pascual —muerte y resurrección con Cristo. Los catecúmenos son guiados a los sacramentos de la iniciación por me-dio del Rito de Elección, los Escrutinios, y una profunda

reflexión catequética. Los fieles somos llamados a escu-char con más atención a la palabra de Dios y a dedicar-

nos a la oración, para prepararnos a través del espíritu de arrepentimiento para renovar nuestras promesas bautismales.

Hoy celebramos con ocho de nuestros catecúmenos que han sido es-cogidos por el arzobispo Gregory entre los Elegidos de Cristo. Yo les pido que los mantengan en sus oraciones de una manera muy especial al ellos continuar con su último período de preparación antes de que sean iniciados en la fe por medio de los sacramentos del Bautismo, la Confirmación y la Eucaristía. Tambien hoy como en todos los años para esta época, tenemos nuestra colecta especial para las Misiones Afro-Americanas e Indigenas en los Es-tados Unidos. Nuestro apoyo a esta colecta nacional ayuda a las hermanas y hermanos en las areas rurales del sur, en los desiertos del sudoeste y en areas de Alaska. Mañana por la noche, en preparación para renovar nuestras promesas bautismales en la Pascua, tendremos la oportunidad de celebrar la reconcil-iación. Nuestro Servicio de Reconciliación Cuaresmal comienza a las 7:00 p.m. y como es costrumbre algunos sacerdotes de las parroquias vecinas estarán disponibles para escuchar confesiones. Por último, quiero invitar a todos a participar una vez más en una Jorna-da Cuaresmal con la Operación Plato de Arroz de Catholic Relief Services para ayudar a proveer asistencia a los pobres y los que sufren en muchas áreas del mundo. Lent —a season to open our hearts more fully to Jesus First Sunday of Lent Week of March 10, 2019 Listen to the Word (Luke 4:1 – 13) What words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Look into your life Question for children: When you feel tempted to do wrong, how do you remain strong in your faith? Question for youth: What is one thing you will do during Lent to become more open to God in your life? Question for adults: As you understand the temptation of Jesus in the desert, which of the devil’s offerings is hardest for you to resist? Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: Lent is a time of prayerful reflection. Discuss with your family a time during the week or day that all radios, stereos, televisions, computers, and telephones will be shut off so family members can pray. Call it the family’s prayer time. At the end of the week, ask family members to share what they have learned or gained from the experience. Will your family be open to God’s presence during the Lenten season? The traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and alms giving, remind us that we need God. As a family, discuss how you can observe these Lenten practices. While there is a tradition of “giving something up” for Lent, this year consider instead “doing something extra” for someone who could use help or assistance. That might include volunteering to take an elderly neighbor shopping or helping him or her with spring chores. How will you participate in our parish Lenten observances this year? Remember we have the Stations of the Cross on Fridays, the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesdays, the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation this Monday evening at 7:00 p.m., the CRS Rice Bowl, etc.

Cuaresma —tiempo para abrir más nuestros corazones a Jesús Primer Domingo de Cuaresma Semana del 10 de marzo del 2019 Escucha la Palabra (Lucas 4:1 – 13) ¿Qué palabras o frases les impactó? ¿Qué parte de esta lectura tocó sus corazones? ¿Qué se quedó en sus memorias? Ve tu vida Pregunta para los niños: Cuando están tentados a hacer algo malo, ¿cómo se mantienen firmes en su fe? Pregunta para los jóvenes: ¿Qué harás durante la Cuaresma para acer-carte más a Dios? Pregunta para los adultos: Al comprender la tentación de Jesús en el desierto, ¿cuál de las ofrendas del diablo les sería más difícil de resistir? Actividades para la semana Tomen estas actividades para reflexionar más: La Cuaresma es una época de reflexión por medio de la oración. Acuerden en familia sobre una hora de la semana o de un día en que se apaguen las radios, los aparatos de sonido, las televisiones, las computado-ras y los teléfonos para que los miembros de la familia pueda rezar. Llamen a esta hora la hora de oración familiar. Primer Domingo de Cuaresma 10 de marzo del 2019 La primera lectura de hoy describe el ofrecimiento de los primeros frutos que el pueblo de Israel debía presenter al Señor en agradecimiento por su liberación de Egipto y el regalo de la tierra prometida.

Esta línea del Antiguo Testamento ofrece dos desafíos. Primero, ¿le das a Dios de tus "primicias", lo mejor que tienes para ofrecer, o das de lo que sobra? Segundo, ¿reconoces que todo lo que tienes te ha sido dado por Dios? Pídele a Dios un corazón agradecido y generoso, todos los días, en cualquier circunstancia y así te preguntarás: ¿Es mi ofrenda una respuesta apropiada a las muchas bendiciones que el Señor me ha dado?

First Sunday of Lent 10 March, 2019 Today’s first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel were to present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deli-verance from Egypt and the gift of the promised land.

This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges. First, do you give to God from your “first fruits”, the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is leftover? Second, do you recog-nize that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day, in all circum-stances and you will ask yourself: Is my offering an appropriate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me?

This weekend we as a Church support the national collection for the Black and Indian Missions. Because of the generosity of the people of this parish, and parishes around the United States, last year, over 8.8 million dollars were contributed and 98 cents of eve-ry dollar received was distributed to the missions. The support went to some of the neediest people across the US; from the inner cities of the rural South and from the deserts of the Southwest to Alas-ka’s cold wilderness. The need for evangelization programs is so important to our Church in this changing world. Let us be generous once again.
