art Night out Expands in 2014

The seventh season of Lafayette’s Art Night Out promises to be bigger and better than ever! This year organizers are closing down Public Road from Cannon to Emma Street the third Friday night of every month to accommodate more artist booths, bigger bands, additional food trucks, and an expanded wine and beer garden.

Only local Lafayette brewed beer from Odd 13 Brewing, Front Range Brewing, and The Post Brewing will be served at the ARTS! Lafayette Beer Garden.

Art Night Out is a free, family friendly community event that takes place from 5 to 9:15pm on the third Friday of every month May through September in Old Town Lafayette. Event dates are June 20, July 18, August 15 and September 19. Learn more at: cityoflafayette.com/ANO

Walk and Wheel lafayetteHealthy lifestyles and an active community are driving forces behind a current project to improve biking and walking in Lafayette–and we need your input!

The City of Lafayette has received a Kaiser Permanente Walk and Wheel grant to examine active transportation habits and needs in our community. Our first step in the process is to have residents collect detailed data within their neighborhoods using a specialized mobile app or paper version. Groups of neighbors will conduct walk audits and share perceptions which will be used to map optimal routes, existing gaps, and future needs.

Gather your neighbors and plan to join one or more walk audits. Staff- led walk audit dates are July 8, 14, 15, 22, 23, 28 and 29 from 6:00-7:30pm. Specific locations will be announced soon. Sign up to receive updates at cityoflafayette.com/WalkAndWheel. A community-wide charrette will be held on October 2 at the library from 6:30-8pm.

Be a Part of...Sustainable living Help keep our streams and rivers clean by taking actions that will prevent water pollution;

uScoop the Poop: Dog poop is a major contributor to stormwater pollution because it contains harmful bacteria and parasites which can spread diseases and negatively affect our waters. Be a responsible pet owner and pick up after your pet.

uLawn and Garden: Lawn care, landscaping, and pest control practices are major contributors to stormwater pollution. Water flowing across yards, rooftops, and paved areas picks up grass clippings and chemicals which pollute the storm drain system and causes excessive algae, not to mention killing fish along the way. Leave grass blades on the lawn or compost, don’t over water, and direct downspouts to drain into the yard to alleviate water pollution.

uHousehold Waste: When you need to get rid of used motor oil, paint, solvents, or fertilizer, be sure to recycle or properly dispose of these products at the free Boulder Hazardous Materials Facility. Take advantage of Public Works’ Electronic Recycling Events and the Police Department’s Prescription Drug Take Back Service to keep other unwanted materials out of landfills and water systems.

Be a Part of...Healthy lifestyles New Waneka Lake Disc Golf Course: The Lafayette

Recreation and Parks Departments are developing a new 18 hole disc golf course at Waneka Lake Park to enhance the community’s outdoor amenities and provide an additional recreational opportunity in Lafayette. The first nine holes, located on the east side of the lake, will be ready for public play in July 2014. The remaining nine holes are planned for a 2015 installation along the west side. Trail Updates: All Lafayette trails damaged by the flood are now open or have established detour routes. Underpasses at So. Public Road and 120th Street are closed for reconstruction, but have button-activated pedestrian crosswalks installed at the street level to allow users to safely navigate road crossings. Emerald ash Borer The emerald ash borer (EAB) is an exotic insect responsible for the death or decline of tens of millions of ash trees and was detected last year in the City of Boulder. A quarantine is currently in place prohibiting the movement of ash tree products and wood out of Boulder County. EAB has no native predators and poses a serious threat to Colorado’s ash trees. Infestation is difficult to detect so if you suspect a problem or are unsure, have your tree examined by a professional. Be a Part of...Shopping and Dining in lafayette As you enjoy shopping and dining in Old Town, 73 new public parking spaces are now at your disposal through a partnership of property owners and the Lafayette Urban Renewal Authority (LURA).

The new public parking spaces are located at;

• 600 S. Public Road – North of Lafayette Florist• 103 N. Public Road – Behind the businesses at the northwest

corner of Simpson and Public• 101 S. Public Road – Behind Anspach’s Jewelry (Simpson/Public)• 309 S. Public Road – Behind the Starkey Building and Festival Plaza

If you prefer to leave your car at home when heading to Old Town, LURA has also funded the installation of eight new bicycle racks downtown.

New library Hours allow for New ProgramsDon’t be surprised if you see librarians biking around town hauling a trailer full of books! New programs, like storytime at LaMont Does Park and kids’ activities at Art Night Out, are launching this summer and moving staff outside the library building. Low patron usage

during weeknights led staff to close the building one hour early freeing up funding to offer new and dynamic programs.
