Basic Skills for Entering Kindergarten
Students should be able to...
● Write their name “The Kindergarten Way”● Know their first and last name.● Recognize and name all letters and numbers up to 10.● Begin to recognize familiar sight words.● Identify some letter sounds.● Know colors and color words.● Sit and listen to a story and retell the story in their own words.
If they cannot do these things, they WILL be learning them throughout the year.
It is always helpful to enter kindergarten with as many of these basic skills.

● Immunizations need to be completed by September 1● Physicals are mandatory in kindergarten, please have MD fill out form● Please notify me of any allergies or medical conditions● All medication requires a permission form● Mrs. Tengwall will complete hearing, vision & blood pressure screenings● Health classes are taught on handwashing, nutrition & safety● Contact at [email protected]
Mrs. Scura, School CounselorSocial, Emotional and Behavioral Supports are available to all students.
● Classroom Lessons provided to all grade levels; focusing on Social, Emotional, Decision Making, and Problem Solving.
● School-Wide Programs addressing friendship, respect, and kindness
● Small Groups to assist with friendships, organization, social skills, and other needs.
● Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) to address behavioral, academic, emotional or health related needs

How do I know what session my child is in?
❖ Notification is provided in mid-August❖ Transportation and Boys’ & Girls’ Club is taken into consideration

PM Kindergarten or PM K-Wrap 12:40 - 3:20
❖ Afternoon Pick-Up by the Kindergarten Classroom

Kindergarten Wrap-Around Program
● Students admitted into the K-Wrap program will experience an extension of the overall kindergarten experience
● Lafayette’s K-Wrap room is located nearby the Kindergarten Classroom
● Transportation to and from school will be provided for all qualifying students
● Students will have the opportunity to bring/purchase lunch and eat in the cafeteria

Mrs. Broe, Media Specialist
● The Kindergarten classes will visit the Media Center once a week for Media. They may also visit once a week for a technology class period with their classroom teacher.
● Students will work on learning technology skills and participate in Makerspace “STEAM” activities. ● Students will be assisted in selecting “Good Fit” books to borrow from the library. ● All Library books are due back to the Media Center the following week.

In order to help prepare your child for Kindergarten Math, you can build number sense by...
● Sort items around the house according to color, size, shape (laundry, blocks, silverware)● Practice counting to 20, count objects in your home● Go on a shape hunt (circles, triangles, squares, rectangles)● Talk about positional and directional concepts (up/down, over/under, beside/between, top/bottom)● Talk about opposite words (less/more, few/many, empty/full, long/short)
The Basic Skills Instruction Program provides reinforcement in Math and Language Arts for the upper grades for students who would benefit from extra support. This program helps build confidence, grade level skills and provides all students opportunities for personal success.

Try practicing the following over the summer:● Identifying uppercase and lowercase letters ● Letter sounds● High frequency words (the, is, am)● Writing uppercase and lowercase letters

The Reading Intervention Program is designed to help students develop skills and strategies necessary to succeed at their current developmental level in the area of reading. Students in Kindergarten - 3rd grade are selected for the program based on assessments, teacher observations and student work.

❖ Speech and Language Therapy is a service offered to qualifying students
❖ Speech and Language services are offered to those students who are found eligible in the areas of articulation (sound development), fluency (stuttering), and/ or language disorders.

● The PTO is a NON for Profit Organization that benefits our school community○ Funds raised help to enhance the school and its activities
