SUCCESS STORIES

ZEBRA HERD HEALED:

Zebras underwent a sudden attack characterized by salivation, muscle

tremors, frequent urination, showing nervous symptoms. Treatment was

initiated and the animals were darted on daily basis to ensure a regular

administration of medicine. After completing the required treatment regime,

a dramatic improvement was seen. The intake of the equids has returned to

normal and the herd is back on track again.

OTTER HEALED:

One of the otter from the trio, was found to be suffering from hind limb

weakness, displaying staggering gait on account of musculo skeletal

disorder. The individual also suffered from frequent attacks of fever.

Administration of drugs proved fruitful and the animal is now back to normal

and is active and playful as before.

PUMA CUB RECOVERED

Puma cubs were born to the Billi and Moti. The new born suffered from

enteritis, diarrhea and fever. Afterwards two months old puma cubs

developed Conjunctivitis. The signs noticed were protruded nictitating

membranes and conjunctivitis. No lacrimation. The cubs were otherwise

pretty healthy,active and playful with normal intake. They were treated with

topical(Polyfax) and systemic antibiotics alongwith oral Vit A and E

supplements for about five days and they were all fine and back on track

again.

WILD CAUGHT LEOPARD

A male common leopard was captured and tranquilized by dart gun on

January 1, 2014 from Qila Syed Wala area, District Narowal by Lahore Zoo

team. The big cat was safely shifted to Lahore Zoo where it was caged for

acclimatization. It is pertinent to mention that first time in Pakistan the

common leopard had been caught live from the wild. The cat is dwelling well

at Lahore Zoo and has been paired, so the conservation of the endangered

species can be carried out.

WILD CAUGHT ANIMALS

Other wild caught animals include Kashmiri wolf, Crocodile captured from

Daska and Python (9-10 feet in length) from Gujranwala.

SAD STORIES

FEMALE RHINOCEROS COMPLETED HER LIFE SPAN

White Rhinoceros, Kawo died in the month of February on account of old age.

She was ill from past few months, with declined food intake. A team from

University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) was consulted which

showed satisfaction over the treatment. Despite of all efforts, the Kawo died.

FEMALE GIRAFFE DIED

On 02-03-2014, female giraffe “Twinkle” while walking through in its

enclosure, stumbled down and got her neck hit against the fence. The impact

leads to a serious vertebral damage coupled with gruesome spinal cord

trauma. The veterinary team treated the animal and painkiller and life saving

drugs were administered but Twinkle owing to her severe cervical injuries

could not recovered and expired few hours later. Post mortem was

conducted by the team of pathologists of University of Veterinary and Animal

Sciences, Lahore and report revealed the dislocation between 3rd and 4th

cervical vertebrae causing death of the animal. The hide of the animal was

tanned and displayed in museum for public awareness.

JUMBO-THE LION COMPLETED HIS LIFE SPAN

Jumbo was born to Leo and Rani in 1998, fell ill in the month of May, 2014.

He was off fed and was shifted to ICU. He was supplemented with drips and

tube feeding was carried out. The veterinary team took all possible steps to

save Jumbo’s life but it departed on May 6, 2014. Jumbo was 16 years old;

however the life span of lion is usually 10-14 years. Postmortem report

showed the evidences of liver cancer. The animal was stuffed and showcased

in the museum for public display.

AILING CHIMPANZEE DIED

The chimpanzee Pinky, a 14 year old primate died at Lahore Zoo on October

31, 2014. She was suffering from severe gastro enteritis from last few days,

the doctors had tried oral medication, then darted, also immobilized her

twice with the gap of 4 days to rehydrate her and other therapy was given,

but unfortunately she didn’t respond any therapy, in last days stomatitis and

gingivitis developed.

The stuffed specimen has been displayed in the museum.

BIRTHS

Lion cub, puma cubs, olive baboon, zebra foal, ungulates (hog deer, spotted

deer, fellow deer, mouflon), peafowl, pheasants, ducks. (all totaling near

515)

ANIMAL ADDITION & EXCHANGE PROGRAM

Two pairs of Mugger Crocodile received from Government of Sindh in

donation.

A trio of otters from Sindh.

Brown tigress brought from Bahawalpur Zoo for pairing of Brown

Bengal Tiger.

Llama female brought from Bahawalpur Zoo to complete the pairing of

llama.

EDUCATION & AWARENESS PROGRAMME IN 2014

Guided tours provided to about 76,830 students of different school, colleges & universities. Touch table learning facility (display of different stuffed animals, birds or their parts on the table) provided to 1300 special students.

Research facilities

74-students were facilitated for fulfillment of their assignments/tasks and research projects regarding partial fulfillment of Bachelors /Honors/Masters/M. Phil degrees at Lahore Zoo. Some of the projects include

the Punjab.

Internship opportunity29-students of DVM and Zoology were

accommodated for internship programme as partial fulfillment of their degrees, belonging to University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Lahore, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Gomal University, D.I Khan, Bahauddin Zikriya University Multan & University of the Punjab.
