Après plus de 10 ans de crise prolongée, 12,5 millions de personnes ont besoin d'une aide humanitaire dans le bassin du lac Tchad. L'épidémie de la COVID-19 continue de se propager dans toute la région, enregistrant au total plus de 92 000 cas confirmés et 1 773 décès. Parallèlement, la violence s’intensifie dans de nombreuses localités, déracinant des milliers de personnes dans toute la région. La violence continue de traumatiser les populations et de perturber les opérations de secours, avec plus de 100 incidents sécuritaires enregistrés pour le mois d'octobre. Près de 3 millions de personnes ont été contraintes de quitter leur foyer, manquant d'abris, de nourriture et d'un accès adéquat à l'eau potable, à l'hygiène et aux installations sanitaires de base. Dans toute la région, le nombre de personnes en situation d'insécurité alimentaire a augmenté de manière spectaculaire, en raison des conflits, des déplacements et des impacts liés à la COVID sur l'emploi et l'accès à la nourriture. Le nord-est du Nigeria est exposé à un risque accru de famine, avec 4,3 millions de personnes confrontées à une crise et à des niveaux d'urgence d'insécurité alimentaire. Le taux de malnutrition aiguë est extrêmement élevé, 500 000 enfants étant menacés de malnutrition sévère. En raison des attaques croissantes contre l'éducation, 1 117 écoles restent fermées. Cette crise complexe met en danger des millions de personnes et nécessite une augmentation urgente de l'aide et des ressources. En novembre 2020, seuls 44 % des 1,83 milliards nécessaires à la réponse étaient financés.
