President & Vice President Reports

Hey all, I hope everyone got the word about the meeting being canceled, for nothing. On Fri when the board made

the decision to cancel--- Dorian was forecast to come right up the middle of the state. I didn’t want to wait till the last minute so we had to go with the forecast at the time.

That was only the 2nd time since 1998 we cancelled a meeting, the first was hurricane Charlie. That being said we have a lot coming up. We have moved the member

pizza party to be held after the Oct 6th, general mtg. Potluck in Nov (Judy King) & chili cook off in Dec (Joyce).. We also have a vet run on Nov 2. We

are still in need of auction items & other smaller prizes. Don’t forget, still looking for sponsors & auction items for the toy run on Dec 7. One more

thing, our part time residence from up north will soon add to our population,

so be alert out there ‘Ride Safe, Ride Free’, Griz

Hospital rules state that patients checking out must have a wheelchair. One day a newly graduated nurse asst came into the room to find an elderly man fully dressed. He was sitting on the bedside chair, with a piece of packed luggage at his side, ready to go. When he was shown the wheelchair, he was adamant that he was fully capable of walking himself to the parking lot. But the asst told him rules were rules, he relented & let her wheel him out. In the elevator, the assistant asked the elderly man if his wife was coming to meet him. “I don’t think so,” he replied. “It takes her awhile to change her clothes, so she’s probably still upstairs in the bathroom taking off of her hospital gown & getting dressed.”

A CNN reporter walks into a tavern & is about to order a drink when he sees a guy at the end of the bar wearing a "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN" hat. It didn’t take an Einstein to know the guy was a Trump supporter. The CNN guy shouts over to the bartender, loudly enough that everyone in the bar could hear, "DRINKS FOR EVERYONE IN HERE, Bartender, ....except for that Trump supporter”. After the drinks were handed out the Trump guy gives the CBB guy a big smile, waves at him & says in an equally loud voice, "THANK YOU!" This infuriates the CNN reporter. So he once again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the guy wearing the Trump hat. As before, this doesn’t seem to bother the Trump guy. He just continues to smile & again yells, "THANK YOU!" So the CNN guy again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the Trump guy & again the Trump guy just smiles & yells back, "THANK YOU!" At that point the aggravated CNN guy asks the bartender "WHAT THE HELL IS THE MATTER WITH THAT TRUMP SUPPORTER? ... I'VE ORDERED 3 ROUNDS OF DRINKS FOR EVERYONE IN THE BAR BUT HIM & ALL THE SILLY ASS DOES IS SMILE & THANK ME. IS HE

NUTS?" "NOPE, " replies the bartender... "HE OWNS THE PLACE." ! 😂

There was an old man, a boy & a donkey. They were going to town & the boy was riding the donkey, the old man walking alongside. As they rambled along, they passed some women sitting in the shade. One of the women said, ''Shame on you, a great lump of a boy, riding while your old father is walking." The man & boy decided that maybe the critics were right so they changed positions. Later they ambled by a group of women by the river. One cried out, "How could you make your little boy walk in the hot sun while you ride!" The 2 travelers decided that maybe they both should walk. Next they met some men on the road. "How stupid you are to walk when you have a perfectly good donkey to ride!" one said. So both father & son clambered onto the donkey, deciding they both should ride. They were soon settled & underway when they encountered some children, one girl shouted, "How mean to put such a load on a poor little animal." The moral, is that you cannot please all the people all the time.

State Meetings for 2020 – will always fall on each even month, the 2nd weekend. Ready for a road trip??

for-i-eat-ass-sticker-on-his-truck Charges dropped against FL man arrested for 'I Eat Ass' sticker on his truck Posted By Colin Wolf -- Charges have been dropped against a FL man who claimed his rights were violated after he was arrested last week for sporting an "I Eat Ass" sticker on his truck. In a May 9 letter to the Columbia Cnty Sheriff's Office, Asst State Attorney Durrett stated that all charges against 23-yr-old Dillon Shane Webb have been dropped, & that his "I Eat Ass" sticker is in fact protected by the First Amendment. "Having evaluated the evidence through the prism of Supreme Court precedent it is determined the Defendant has a valid defense to be raised under the First Amendment of our US Constitution. Given such, a jury would not convict under these facts," said Durrett in the letter. Webb was pulled over on Hwy 90 after an officer with the Columbia Cnty Sheriff's Office spotted his "I Eat Ass" sticker on the back of his Chevrolet truck. According to the Lake City Reporter, the deputy claimed the sticker violated FL Statute 847.011, which deals with possession & distribution of obscene material. The officer then instructed Webb to remove one of the letters from the "I Eat Ass" sticker, to which he refused, & was promptly arrested for resisting without violence & possession of obscene materials. Webb was later released on a $2,500 bond. An attorney for Webb told Anne Shindler of First Coast News that a lawsuit against the Columbia Cnty Sheriff's Office is now likely. "Now we transition from defense to offense," said the attorney. "The First Amendment was our defense. What is Sheriff Hunter's defense? We will find out!"

ee6741d2-bdb5-46af-ab84-427175f6c13f BARTOW – A FL man who struck & killed a motorcyclist while trying to pass 2 cars on a rural road was sentenced to 90 days in jail & a year without driving. A local newspaper reported that Jarrod Witt Lee, 33, was facing up to a year in jail for culpable negligence in the 2017 death of motorcyclist Philip Brown. Judge Helms handed down a lesser sentence instead. Lee cannot drive during his year on probation. Lee’s car hit the motorcycle head-on. Brown, 40, was thrown from his bike & died. Prosecutors were seeking a vehicular homicide conviction but jurors found Lee guilty of the lesser charge. The judge said the jury’s decision limited his sentencing options. According to the Polk Cnty Jail’s website, Lee has been in & out of jail since 2005.

https://www.villages-news.com/2019/08/18/no-justice-in-death-of-villager-as-dui-suspect-remains-on-the-

run/?fbclid=IwAR2RKtfzpuaJinLYOJ0GPJYw3_UB2lL6jNCmPh-gSLTWm_lwtxEwszlAmBw No justice in death of Villager as DUI suspect remains on the run. This week marks 3 years since a Villager riding a motorcycle was struck & killed by a hit-&-run suspect. Lori Dudley, 54, on Aug. 20, 2016 had been riding a motorcycle at US Hwy. 27 & Tally Rd in Leesburg when she was struck by a 1997 Saturn station wagon. She later died at Leesburg Regional Medical Center. The man who had been at the wheel of the Saturn, Jose Omar Azua, was arrested as a result of the crash. However, he posted $35,000 bond & skipped a subsequent court appearance. He hasn’t been seen since. Dudley had been thrown to the windshield of the vehicle & then rolled to the ground. A witness said the Saturn kept going. When Azua

was initially located down the road, he was not in the vehicle. He was talking on a cell phone. He claimed he had not been driving. An investigator stated that Azua “had the distinct odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath” & that he was “clearly intoxicated.” He would not consent to a blood draw & no witness could specifically place him at the wheel of the Saturn at the scene of the accident. He was released. Azua voluntarily showed up Aug. 22, 2016 at the Leesburg Police Dept. He spoke little English & required an interpreter. Eventually he admitted he had been driving the Saturn, had consumed several beers & indicated he kept going because he “was scared.” Though he remains on the run, Azua, now 36 yrs old, continues to face charges of vehicular homicide & leaving the scene of an accident involving death. Should he be apprehended, he would almost certainly be returned to Lake Cnty. Azua has had a nu of driving-related offenses in Lake Cnty: • In Dec 2011, Azua had been sentenced to probation on charges of driving under the influence & resisting arrest. • In May 2016, he was fined $173 & ordered to attend traffic school after he was cited on a charge of failure to yield to oncoming traffic. • In May 2014, he was cited when he failed to yield as a pedestrian. • In Sept 2011, he was fined after he was ticketed for speeding. He had been ticketed for speeding earlier that year, but was able to attend traffic school to avoid conviction.

QUICK, OPEN THE BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY-- On a chain of beautiful deserted ISLs in the middle of South Pacific, the following people are stranded: 2 Italian men & 1 Italian woman. 2 French men & 1 French woman. 2 German men & 1 German woman. 2 Greek men & 1 Greek woman. 2 British men & 1 British woman. 2 Bulgarian men & 1 Bulgarian woman .2 Irish men & 1 Irish woman. 2 Japanese men & 1 Japanese woman. 2 Chinese men & 1 Chinese woman. 2 American men & 1 American woman One month later, on these absolutely stunning deserted ISLs in the middle of nowhere, the following things have occurred: One Italian man killed the other Italian man for the Italian woman. The 2 French men & the French woman are living happily together in a ménage à trois. The 2 German men have a strict weekly schedule of alternating visits with the German woman. The 2 Greek men are sleeping together & the Greek woman is cooking & cleaning for them. The 2 British men are waiting for someone to introduce them to the British woman. The 2 Bulgarian men took one look at the Bulgarian woman & started swimming to another ISL. The 2 Japanese have faxed Tokyo & are awaiting instructions. The 2 Chinese men have set up a pharmacy, liquor store, restaurant, & laundry, & have gotten the woman pregnant in order to supply more employees for their stores. The 2 Irish men divided the ISL into north & south & set up a distillery. They do not remember if sex is in the picture because it gets somewhat foggy after a few pints of coconut whisky. However, they're satisfied because the British aren't having any fun. The 2 American men are contemplating suicide, because the American woman complains relentlessly about her body, the true nature of feminism, what the sun is doing to her skin, how she can do anything they can do, the necessity of fulfillment, the equal division of household chores, how sand & palm trees make her look fat, how her relationship with her mother is the root cause of all her problems, & why didn't they bring a damn cell phone so they could call 911 & get them all rescued off this forsaken ISL in the middle of freaking nowhere so she can get her nails done & go shopping.' https://www.dailycommercial.com/news/20190724/life-savers-astatula-police-cars-outfitted-with-new-aeds ASTATULA — The Astatula Police

Dept deployed automated external defibrillators in every police car in town last month, filling an important need for the small town dept after the town council approved the funding in May. For the past several years, the dept had just 2 devices that it used for the day & night shifts. But the frequency of medical calls meant the one device per shift could be stretched thin, Astatula Police Chief Walter Hoagland said. “We respond to medical calls a lot,” “This is one of the critical things you need in a (cardiac arrest) situation.” The devices, used to rescue a person from sudden cardiac arrest, were approved for purchase at the May 13 town council meeting. The $9,864 purchase included the new Physio-Control AEDs, carrying cases, pads for adults & children & an 8-yr warranty on each device. According to the meeting minutes, the money came from impact fees used

for public safety. The town originally applied for a grant from Firehouse Subs, which was denied. The town clerk, Graham Wells, sourced the devices for the town, selecting a brand compatible with the larger, more complex defibrillators carried by Lake EMS & Fire Rescue paramedics. The devices arrived in mid-June & were deployed the same day, Hoagland said, after he delivered training to his officers on how to use them. Wells said anyone can use one of the devices, which offer voice prompts & a simple, 2-button operation, but that training can save valuable, life-saving time. According to the American Red Cross, every second counts when rescuing someone from a sudden cardiac arrest. Every minute someone isn’t defibrillated can reduce the chance of survival by up to 10%, according to their website. Wells said that even after six minutes of waiting for a defibrillator, a person’s chance of survival rapidly deteriorates. Having the technology & the training on-hand can make a huge difference in saving a life. That’s why the devices are important, Wells said. Saturating the area with more AEDs can only be a good thing, & making sure the school resource officer has one too means students are protected twice over. “There’s no discrimination for sudden cardiac arrest,” he said. “Not age, not gender, not race.” Both Hoagland & Wells gave most of the credit to the town council. Wells said there wasn’t a hint of hesitation in their decision.

FLConsumerHelp.com. -- National SR Citizens Day is celebrated on Aug 21st. It is a day set aside to recognize the contributions, services, & dedication they have given throughout their lives. By 2020, FL is expected to have a population exceeding 23.5

million with over 28% of that population being over 60. SRs comprise the state's 2nd largest economic sector contributing a $2.8 billion net tax benefit after all services are rendered. FL's SRs donate $3.5 billion to charities in addition to donating their time & talents in their communities. Unfortunately, senior citizens are also a prime target for con artists perpetrating any nu of scams. SRs are generally hesitant to report when they have been a victim of fraud, & many times the cases are difficult to prosecute. However, informed seniors-like any consumer-can protect themselves from scammers. FDACS is the state's clearinghouse for consumer complaints, protection, & info. The dept provides a variety of resources to protect consumers & ensures they have the info they need to make informed decisions. In that spirit, here is a brief recap of some of the top scams targeting seniors. •The IRS Phone Scam — Scammers claim that an individual owes back taxes & penalties, & say that unless the person pays immediately, they could be arrested or have their home foreclosed on. •Sweepstakes Scam —call or email victims & tell them they've won the lottery & just need to pay a fee to collect their winnings. •SS Scam — Scammers either phone or email consumers, claiming to represent the SS Admin & ask consumers for personal info, such as their SS nu, date of birth or bank account info. •Tech Support Scam — Fraudsters pretend they work for a well-known tech co like Microsoft or Dell. They claim the consumer's computer has been infected with a virus, & then try to get remote access to the computer, as well as access to the victim's credit card or bank account i so that they can bill them for fixing the alleged problem. •Grandparent Scam —pretend to be the victim's grandchild & claim they need money to get themselves out of an emergency, such as being arrested. Or they may claim to have kidnapped the senior's grandchild & ask for ransom. •Medicare Scam —pose as Medicare reps to get seniors to give them their personal info or pay for unnecessary services. •Romance Scam — Fraudsters contact seniors through an online dating site or other kinds of social media. Once they've struck up a relationship, they ask for money, perhaps to pay for a trip to visit the senior or to cover some kind of emergency, like medical costs. Scams involving your SS nu & benefits are on the rise! Here are the facts: ----------Government employees will not threaten to take away benefits or ask for money or personal information to protect your SS card. ------------Scammers can fake your caller ID. So don't be fooled if the call seems to be from the SSA's real phone nu (800) 772-1213 or the SSA Inspector General's Fraud Hotline nu. ---------If a caller asks for your SS nu, bank account or credit card info, hang up. Report suspected scams to the SSA Inspector General at (800) 269-0271 ----FTC Settlement with FB $5,000,000,000 Unprecedented Penalty. New privacy structure at FB. New tools for FTC to monitor FB. Source: Federal Trade Commission FTC.gov On July 24, 2019, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced it had reached a settlement agreement with FB, Inc. imposing an historic penalty & significant requirements on the social media giant to boost accountability & transparency. The co will pay a record-breaking $5 billion penalty & submit to new restrictions, & a modified corporate structure that will hold the co accountable for the decisions it makes about its users' privacy & to settle FTC charges that FB, Inc. violated a 2012 FTC order by deceiving users about their ability to control the privacy of their personal info.
