Book Chat
“The Racketeer”
Author John Grisham
Contributed by Bob Freedman
Like any Grisham book, this one has a
plot built around a particular legal
principle. In this case it’s a loophole. As
part of the Federal Rule of Criminal
Procedure. Rule 35 allows for the
reduction of a sentence if a defendant
provides “substantial assistance in
investigating or prosecuting another
person”.
Given that as the main platform, the
author springs into a tale regarding
Malcolm Bannister (later to be known as
Mal Baldwin) who begins the book as a
convict, an ex-marine and a former
lawyer who got caught up in
racketeering charges brought up by the
Federal Government against Mal’s law
firm in violations he never knowingly
committed.
This is not a story about a win or a loss
in the courtroom. It’s a much more
surprising story of a man who gets
smarter once he spends five years
sharpening his skills as a jailhouse
lawyer, and then carries out an
incredible revenge scheme.
This is Grisham at his best as a story
teller. He strategically keeps Mal’s tricks
a few steps ahead of the story, so that we
don’t know why he does things until
after they have started to happen. This is
a difficult plot to describe without
spoiling it for those of you who decide to
pick it up. As in all of Grishma’s tales,
the main character is developed fully,
the supporting characters are essential
to the development of the main theme,
and the story moves quickly so that your
interest is always secured.
In this one, there are many twists and
turns as the story progresses and the
surprises keep coming. All in all, it’s a
good page-turner.

Funny Situation There once was a man and a woman
who had been married for more than 60
years. They talked about everything.
They kept no secrets from each
other…except that the old woman had a
shoe box in the top of her closet that she
cautioned her husband never to open it
or ask her about it.
For all these years he had never thought
about the box, but one day the little old
woman got very sick and the doctor said
she would never recover.
In trying to sort out their affairs the
little old man took down the shoe box
and took it to his wife’s bedside. She
agreed it was time that he should know
what was in the box.
When he opened it he found 2
beautifully crocheted doilies and a stack
of money totaling over $25,000. He
asked her about the unusual contents.
“When we were married”, she said, “my
grandmother told me the secret of a
happy marriage was to never argue. She
told me that if I ever got angry with you,
I should just keep quiet and crochet a
doily”.
The little old man was so moved; he had
to fight back tears. Only two precious
doilies were in the box. She had only
been angry with him tow times in all
those years of living and loving. He
almost burst with joy and happiness.
“Sweetheart”, he said… “that explains
the doilies, but what about all this
money? Where did it all come from?”
Oh, “she said, that’s the money I made
from selling the doilies.”
