P olice believe they may make more arrests in relation to the murder of Anthony O’Grady, whose semi-naked body was found bound on Thomas Armstrong Oval
in Wickham last month.The revelation follows the arrest of a 49-year-old
and an 18-year-old last week, over their alleged involvement in the incident.
Police arrested and charged 49-year-old, Sidney Regan, with concealing a serious offence last Wednesday, after executing a search warrant at a residence in Lindsay Street, Hamilton, where officers allegedly located bank cards belonging to Mr O’Grady and a mobile phone.
He was granted conditional bail in Newcastle Local Court later that day, but as of last Thursday, had not been able to raise the $1,000 surety needed for his release.
He will reappear in Newcastle Local Court on Monday, May 12.

Ticking off one of life’s important achievements - albeit 20 years late
Last week, I achieved what many people would consider to be one of life’s important milestones - getting my P plates.
You’ve probably immediately diverted your eyes over t o m y he adshot a nd t hought “ He g ot h is P plates? How old is this guy?”
For the record, I’m 3 6 years old and have never had a l icence pr ior to this. The next question, of course, i s “ Why h aven’t I g ot m y l icence b efore this?” a nd i t’s one I’ ve b een a sked m any t imes over the years.
To be honest, it just never appealed to me. I grew up in Sydney in close to proximity to the train line which provided direct access into the city.
When I started working in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, I found it very easy to simply jump on the train and bypass all of the traffic.
As a teenager, I didn’t have that eagerness to get behind the wheel as soon as possible that almost all youngsters do. As the years went on, I became used to relying on public transport.
In Sydney, you pret ty much get a nywhere you need to go with relative ease. Moving to the vine-yards area up here in the Hunter Valley is a differ-ent s tory. W hile t he l ocal bu s c ompany, Ro ver Coaches, provide a very professional service, if I happened to miss the last bus home in the after-noon, it would mean having to sheepishly ring my wife and plead to be picked up from somewhere.
This would mean delaying my children’s
dinner as they were loaded into the car to pick Dad up from Newcastle. About a y ear ago, while in-between jobs, I had been having driving lessons after getting my L’s. But starting work here at the Post restricted the time I could get practice in and in the end, it was my wife who forced the issue.
After a bout 13 y ears of w aiting f or me t o do i t myself, she booked the driving test.
The butterflies were certainly churning when I realised there was no escaping my fate. I’d have to give it my best shot and see how I go. I’m assuming many people who s it this test had the same feel-ings as me: “How am I possibly going to remember everything I have to do?” and “I’m going to be so nervous and will stuff it up.”
But d uring t he te st, I ac tually f elt qu ite c alm. Some wise advice from my driving instructor helped immensely: “Just concentrate on t he task you doing right at that moment. That’s the most important thing. Don’t start thinking about how much longer this is going to take or worrying if you made a mistake on something five minutes ago.
The next day, I decided to jump straight into the deep end and drive to work here at Charlestown - a distance of a bout 45kms. Possibly not t he smart-est move given that I had never driven on my own before. But I m ade it without incident and would certainly e ncourage ot hers my a ge or o lder who have been putting off driving for whatever reason to take the plunge.

T he closure of East Maitland Courthouse to criminal proceed-ings is a bro ken promise, accord-ing t o S hadow M inister f or t he

Labor candidate for Maitland Jenny Aitch-ison, Ms Hornery said that, before the 2011 election, the current Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker, assured the community the courthouse would remain open.
“This w as a pre -election prom ise f rom Ms Parker,” Ms Hornery said.
“She d ismissed L abor’s c oncerns f or this v ery e ventuality as ‘ ridiculous’ an d claimed any talk of job l osses at Maitland courts was ‘scaremongering’.”
Ms Parker said that her statement not a promise, and the comments were in refer-ence to a different courthouse.
“Election prom ises a re about t hings we say we will do or not do a nd are linked to funding commitments,” Ms Parker said.
“There was a d iscussion about Maitland courthouse s taff l osing t heir job s, a s I recall, and that hasn’t been the case at all, so it was taken out of context really.

Ms A itchison s aid a L abor G overnment would look at reopening the courthouse.
“Of course we will look at it, in terms of reopening it, it’s a year to go and we have to look at where it is up to when we get there,” she said.
“Labor r ecognises th e i mportance o f keeping e mployment o pportunities i n Maitland a nd not s ending t hem to either inner city Newcastle or Sydney.”
Ms Parker, however, questioned Labor’s committment t o re opening t he c ourt-house.
“I notice the opposition didn’t say they would change it if they were in Govern-ment,” she said.
“They do want to be the alternative Government and the a lternative Minister so, will they change it?
“They’re not saying that.”

Lake Macquarie City Council (LMCC) is proposing to undertake ground disturbing works for the construction of a shared pathway adjacent to Bareki Road in Eleebana, NSW. LMCC will be investigating the implications of the proposed works in relation to Aboriginal cultural heritage. An application for an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) in accordance with Part 6 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 may be required due to the association between the proposed works, a recorded Aboriginal site and an area of potential archaeological deposit. Aboriginal parties who hold relevant cultural knowledge about this area and who wish to be consulted regarding cultural heritage investigations relating to the proposed works are invited to register their interest. Consultation will be undertaken to assist LMCC in determining the potential impact of the proposed works on Aboriginal cultural heritage and this information will inform the preparation of an AHIP application (if required). The exhibition will feature a collection of photographs c ommissioned by t he T ooth and C o. brew ing c ompany i n 1959, wh ich capture s ome of t he Hunter’s mo st ic onic hotels, f rom t he i nfamous S tar H otel i n Newcastle’s C BD t o t he f ederation e ra, Kurri Kurri Hotel in the coal fields.
Local h istorian, Ed T onks, w ho w ill b e running pub c rawl-style w alks t hrough Newcastle a s p art of t he e xhibition, s aid the collection of photographs provides a n interesting snapshot of life in the late 50s.
“Given New castle’s h istory a t a h arbour city, there has always been a l ot of p eople moving through town,” Mr Tonks said.
“At that point in time pubs were more like m otels, p roviding a ccommodation and daily meals to travellers, so there were quite a f ew establishments w ithin a sm all area of the city to meet demand.”
Mr Tonks said his walk through the CBD would take in around 30 historic pub sites.

Newcastle City Hall is one of our city’s most iconic heritage buildings and speaks volumes of ou r proud past and who we are as a city.
Opening i n 1929, i t i s one of New castle’s mo st pre stigious buildings and the heart of historic Civic Precinct.
City Hall was listed on the State Heritage Register in Septem-ber 2012 recognising its outstanding example of the Inter-War Academic C lassical s tyle i n NS W. T he bu ilding’s pl anning, construction a nd h istory of u se a lso re flects t he g rowth, development a nd i ncreased p ower of l ocal g overnment i n Newcastle and New S outh Wales. As Lord Mayor, I a m privi-leged to have my office in this beautiful historic building.
So, it is exciting to report that Council is proceeding with much needed conservation work on the City Hall clock tower.
The tender was recently awarded to Stone Mason and Artist Pty Ltd and work is due to start in early May. Scaffolding will be erected around the clock tower, but impacts to the opera-tion of City Hall will be minimal with functions and events to continue as normal. To be more visually appealing and help citizens envision how t he Tower w ill look upon completion, a full-size image of t he restored Tower will be printed on t he scaffold w rap. T he w ork i s b eing u ndertaken i n ac cordance with the City Hall Conservation Management Plan adopted in 2008. The project includes sandstone replacement and repair, waterproofing a nd le ad f lashing repl acement, re storation of metal windows and the copper roof, replacement of electrical and lighting, and refurbishment of the clock mechanisms.

Recently, I op ened ou r new C ommunity Re cycling C entre a t Awaba for household problem waste. Our residents have always shown strong support for smarter ways to manage waste, and I’m sure the recycling centre will be no exception. Have your say on flood risks
Lake Macqaurie City Council is seeking residents of Belmont and Marks Point to join a new community working group, which it says will give Lakeside residents more opportunity to have their say on how Council manages future flood risks.
Acting manager integrated planning, Iain Moore said the formation of the group builds on extensive community engagement with residents on potential actions to reduce the risk of flooding.
“Our collaborative approach is giving the community a greater involvement in the development of plans to minimise flooding risks now and in the future,” he said.
“We are seeking about 20 residents from the Marks Point [and] Belmont South area to meet monthly over the next four months to work through potential actions to reduce the risk of flooding in their area.”
The group will work with Council to review draft project objectives and criteria, assess proposed management options, recommend which manage-ment options should be included in a draft adaption plan and suggest triggers and times for implementing manage-ment options.
The first of these group meetings will be held on May 15.

Stabbing in Raymond Terrace home invasion
Police are conducting investigations after a man was stabbed during a home invasion at Raymond Terrace on Friday morning.
About 1:20am, Friday 25 April, a 52-year-old man was at his house on Earl Grey Crescent when he answered a knock at the front door.
Police have been told that he was confronted by two men and a woman who forced entry into the house and assaulted him with a piece of timber while demanding money.
The man managed to grab the piece of wood and fight back before his attackers ran from the house empty-handed.
The men fled in an unknown car while the woman was seen to walk towards Brown Street.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene and the man was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment of a large laceration to his head and two stab wounds to his abdomen.
He was remains in a serious but stable condition.
Detectives from the Port Stephens Local Area Command are continuing investiga-tions into the assault and are looking for the trio.
The woman police are looking to speak to has been described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, 30-35 years old with a thin build and wearing dark clothing.
The two men have only been described as wearing dark clothing with their faces covered.
Car crashes into office building at Belmont
Inquiries are continuing after a car hit an office building in Belmont.
About 8.40pm on Thursday 24 April, a Holden Barina was travelling north on the Pacific Highway, when it swerved to try and avoid a Ford Falcon that had turned in front of it.
As a result of the impact between the two cars, the Falcon has left the road and hit the wall of a local office building.
There were no reports of injury.Both drivers were subjected to roadside
breath tests which proved negative.The Barina was extensively damaged as a
result of the crash.Engineers will assess the structural
integrity of the building.
Dispute over debt leads to Stockton fight
A man has appeared in court following a serious assault at Stockton.
About 6.45pm on Tuesday 22 April, a 21-year-old man attended a house on Pacific Street, and allegedly confronted a 43-year-old man.
They became involved in an argument, before the younger man allegedly punched the other man once to the face.
Police will allege the man was holding a set of keys in his hand when he threw the punch.
The older man was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
It is believed the incident was over an outstanding debt.
Teenagers charged after school break-in
Two teenage boys have been charged over the alleged break-in of a primary school in Windale.
Just before 5.30am on Saturday 19 April, a school on James Street was broken into and a large number of items allegedly stolen.
It’s alleged 30 tablet computers and a laptop were stolen from a safe.
Officers from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command commenced an investigation into the incident.
Following inquiries, police then attended a home on Cherry Street, Windale, about 12.30pm on the same Saturday, where they located and seized a number of tablet computers.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested at the home and taken to Belmont Police Station, where he was charged with break, enter and steal; receiving stolen goods; and resist arrest.
Later the same day, detectives attended a home on Munro Street, Windale, and located more of the allegedly stolen tablets.

This inquiry has laid bare the process for getting political approval for whatever business deal or property dev elopment y ou wan t to ‘ expedite’. A $3000 bot tle of w ine here, a dona tion to a slush fund there, a whisper in the ear of ma te and before y ou can say Independent Commission A gainst Corruption your deal is done. W e shoul d abhor corr uption, bec ause corruption hurts us all. S ydney Water paid millions for the (allegedly) dodgy purchases of Arthur Sinodinus and his Liberal ma te, making Sydney Water raise the wa ter bills of thousands of homes. E ddy Obied ’s (alleg ed) litany of deals cost NSW millions in lost revenue, mean-ing services were cut or taxes were raised in other areas to make up the difference. Craig Thompson’s (convicted) use of low income hospital worker’s money for his o wn ends has risk ed the w orkplace protec tion for w orkers across the country. These months of inquiry have shown the need to protec t ICAC f rom a ttack b y poli ticians. I t has also clearly demonstra ted the need for a na tional corruption agency (like ICAC) to k eep a wa tch over the federal parliament.

Using super to buy property

Everybody wants the latest secret to good health, and there are plen ty of people sa ying they ha ve i t to sell y ou some gimmick equipment, book or online plan. Save your time and money, there is no secret!
Exercise regularly, ea t w ell and rest. F ollowing such basic rules can cut heart disease risk by 80 per cent, diabetes risk by 90 per cent and cancer risk by at least 50 per cent.
Wear a pedometer, aim for at least 30 minutes of brisk walk-ing and a total of 10 ,000 steps per da y. Don’t forget strength training for y our upper and lo wer body. T oo man y people neglect resistance e xercise, partic ularly w omen for whom it’s crucial for preventing muscle and bone loss w ith age. Lift weights for at least 20 minutes, two to three times per week.
Eat at least two fish meals per w eek. The evidence is strong that the oils in dark er types of fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring, are beneficial for the heart and brain.
Drink plenty of good water. No matter where you are, water should alwa ys be the first thin g y ou reach for when y ou’re thirsty. W ater tr uly is essen tial. I t’s easy to drink c alories without notic ing: tha t big la tte migh t ha ve nearly as man y calories as a bur ger. And a bot tle of soft drink c an have more sugar than y ou need in w eek. You may feel full but nei ther have given your body much useful nutrition.
Sleep eigh t hours a nigh t. Amon g the man y benefi ts, adequate sleep mak es y ou feel bet ter, dec reases risk for cardiovascular disease and boosts memory.
Keep sugar to a minimum. D ecreasing sugar ac tually increases people’s energy by minimising the highs and lo ws that sweet foods trigger. You will also lose weight!
Consider therapies for chronic problems, such as back pain or a headache. Seeing a good massage therapist for neck strain may work better than takin g extra strength pain killers, and it’s a whole lot better for your body.
Don’t foc us on dietin g. Focus on ea ting. If y ou’re hun gry, you’re more lik ely to o vereat, espec ially in the ev ening. I t’s better to eat enough during the day to avoid hunger pangs.
Crohn’s Disease is a type of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that can strike anyone of any age (including young children) but is most commonly diagnosed in people between the ages of 15 and 30.
IBD i s n ot c aused b y an al lergic r eaction t o p articular foods, although certain foods may trigger or w orsen the symptoms of IBD. Unfortunately the cause of I BD is not f ully understood yet, although it may be possible that there is a genetic link.
It is also known that smoking can make a p erson’s symptoms more severe and less responsive to treatment.
Crohn’s D isease re sults i n p atches of i nflammation a long t he walls of t he i ntestine. This c an c ause t he i ntestines to narrows in places, obstructing the passage of d igested food; it can cause cracks and tears in the intestinal wall, especially near the anus; and it can change the way nutrients are absorbed by the intestine, putting the person with Crohn’s Disease at risk of malnutrition.
The s ymptoms of C rohn’s D isease c an v ary f rom p erson t o person, bu t m ay i nclude p ainful a bdominal c ramps, re gular episodes of d iarrhoea and an urgency to use the toilet, fever in response to the inflammation, bleeding from the bowel, weight loss and tiredness. A person with Crohn’s Disease can go through a cycle of active disease and periods of remission when they may experience no symptoms and generally feel well.
There is currently no cure for Crohn’s Disease or other types of IBD, but t here a re s ome good t reatments a nd me dications t hat can help to control the inflammation and progress of the disease.
In s ome c ircumstances i t m ay b e ne cessary f or a s urgeon t o remove t he d iseased s ections of b owel bu t u nfortunately t his does not ne cessarily s top t he d isease f rom re curring i n ot her parts of the bowel. It is important for anyone with Crohn’s Disease or ot her f orms of I BD t o v isit t heir do ctor re gularly, e specially when t heir d isease is ac tive, to mon itor t heir symptoms, nutri-tion, response to treatment and to prevent or treat any additional complications t hat m ay a rise. The K nights looked strong i n t he open-ing e xchanges le d by f orwards T uiala Togiatasi a nd L uke Y ates. T his e nabled the team to open the scoring after just five minutes via second-rower Joe Tapine.
Winger Bryce Donovan added the extras to give the Knights an early 6-0 lead.
Newcastle e xtended th eir l ead j ust fi ve minutes later when centre Sione Mata’utia crashed o ver f ollowing a ni ce f ace b all from ha lfback J aelen F eeney. D onovan was a gain f aultless w ith t he k ick a s t he Knights skipped away to a 12-0 advantage after just 14 minutes.

The Knights finished the half in fine style thanks to a strong try from second-rower Harry Pondekas. Donovan converted from the sideline to make sure Newcastle went into the sheds leading 26-6.

Knights’ lead after 65 minutes following a qu ality k ick f rom D obson. M antellato missed the kick, but it was Newcastle out in front 32-12 with just eight minutes left in the match.
Fullback Nathan Ross then put on an attacking sho w w ith a sl icing r un f rom halfway to score under the posts.
Mantellato added the extras for a 38-12 lead with just minutes remaining.

“It was a nice surprise and that’s what probably made it a little bit hard seeing him after the game today,” Gidley said.
“It would have been great to get t he result for him today, but it was still great having him here at the game.
“And i t’s n ice t o s ee t he pro gression he i s making too from where he was.
“Me and a few of the other boys got dropped off at the hospital on the way down yesterday.
“It was great to see him, because I’d spoken to him on the phone. But he has got a great attitude Alex”.

“The more effort you make, the luckier you get. So that hasn’t changed in all my coaching time.
“But look, our last month has been pretty good, our last five weeks actually.
“We pl ayed a l ot b etter t han t he s coreboard suggested against the Broncos, we won the week before, so we are getting where we want to go.
“I just thought our effort was tremendous and the guys did stand up. I thought we rattled their cage a fair bit.
“We were beaten on the scoreboard, but not too sure where else we were beaten.”
NRL action takes a break this weekend with the Test match between Australia and New Zealand at Allianz Stadium on F riday night. Samoa play Fiji in Penrith on Saturday evening and City takes on Country in Dubbo on Sunday afternoon.
