Kristin and Jeff Hollander, along with their daughter Elee, age 5, and son, Graham, age 3, live in a historic home in the East Isles/ Lowry Hills neighborhood. “We’ve been informed that our house is the oldest in Lowry Hills,” Jeff stated. “One of the founders of today’s PiperJaffray, C.P. Jaffray, lived here through the ‘20s into the ‘40s, according to county records.” Construc-tion on this Franklin Avenue home began in the 1880's, and today the Hollanders’ renova-tions include some restoration. “Our plan is to bring it up to date with some modern ameni-ties, while also restoring the turn of the century beauty of the old home,” said Jeff. Although they moved to the community less than a year ago, the Holland-ers have been heavily involved in the lakes area for several years, as both children attended Grace Neighborhood Nursery School and the eldest, Elee, now attends Carondelet Catholic School. “We try to stay as local as possible with our children’s activities because we live in such a great neighborhood,” Kristin shared. “So much is attainable at your fingertips in the Lake of the Isles.”

Kristin is co-owner of Made, a custom product agency in Uptown that finds unique ways to promote brands. “My firm is all about pushing the brand for tangible product, and pushing community through something tangible for the brand,” Kristin explained. One such stunning Neighborsmeet the

product is the Minneapolis Institute of Arts’ (MIA) Ice Dragon erected February 20 in North Lake Calhoun/ South Lake of the Isles area. The ice dragon is the ninth of 52 surprises planned for MIA’s 100th birthday. This was the first of four surprises Made was hired to collaborate on creating. “The ice dragon is representa-tive of MIA’s Asian collection,” said Kristin. “The other three surprises will be popping up over the course of the summer and into next fall.”

As the Hollanders become more accustomed to the Lake of the Isles, they look forward to more involve-ment in N2 Publishers area networking opportuni-ties. “We have only gone to one event, but it was very intriguing,” expressed Kristin, “It was such an interest-ing group of people and a great way to meet neighbors and local business owners.”

Visionary Richard Moody is a philan-thropist and fashionista who has turned these skills into IamMoody, a company that organizes fashion and fundraising events throughout the Twin Cities. “I only can do what I do because I have a great team and come from good fam-ily stock; we are used to giving because I grew up that way.” When asked what it means to be an entrepreneur, Rich-ard replied, “I think if one is ambitious, positive, professional and focused, plus supports their community, that will come back to you and your business. It’s not

about the money you make, but the com-munity impact of your work.” “I like the diversity of the Lake of the Isles commu-nity, but it also is a great neighborhood to be philanthropic. When Hurricane Katrina happened, I asked my neighbors to donate anything they could. A week later there was 1.2 tons of stuff at my house.”

One of IamMoody’s projects is “The Dan-dies,” a fashionable mentoring group for men of color, which is in its second year. “I saw these men out and about doing great things, but they didn’t know one another,”

he explained. “They’re very fashionable and have overcome obstacles. My goal was to have them collaborate with each other and reach out to struggling young men of color. It’s about 80% presentation and 20% application; dressing with pride and impacting your community.” Rich-ard chose the name IamMoody not only because it’s his last name but because of something his nephew said: “Moody is not just a name, but an attitude.” Find out more about Richard and The Dan-dies Project at iammoody.com.

For more than 15 years, the Walker Art Center has been a leader in innovative youth programming, providing cultural institutions around the world with a successful model for engaging teens and young adults. At the center of this model is the Walker ArtCenter Teen Arts Council (WACTAC), a diverse group of 12 young artists and art enthusiasts who ensure that events for teens are part of the Walker’s overall program throughout the year. Meeting weekly after school, WACTAC members identify opportunities in the Walker’s

exhibition schedule for teens to connect with contemporary art and artists. They also design their own creative projects to augment the institution’s offerings. In the past, WACTAC has developed exhibitions and events to showcase teen artists, invited resident artists to give talks and lead classes, developed marketing materials and strategies, written and published origi-nal work for print and online, planned regional film festivals, and partnered with local groups to present programs throughout Minneapolis and St. Paul.

“To me, fashion gives a person the ability to transform, to become a character, to feel glamorous, or enhance one’s person-ality through style—this fascination has been a love of mine ever since I was a little girl,” shares Emma Berg, this issue’s very special Artist of the Month. While studying costume design at the Univer-sity of Minnesota, was approached by a local retailer who wanted to carry a line that interpreted her style, as Emma has made and worn her own designs since learning how to sew in her middle school years. She emanates versatility in her artful interpretation of fashion. In

the spring of 2009, she debuted her first “capsule collection” for the upcoming fall. Since then, she has vividly interpreted her inspirations each season with collection design-descriptives such as “Auntie Mame, the Midnight Garden, Dolls, Que Sera Sera, News Headlines 2010, and Build It.” She caters to your heart. “I design for the woman who wants to feel beautiful and accepted in their own skin.” Last summer, Emma partnered with a local chapter of the Boys & Girls Club of America to design 12 unique prom dresses for 12 equally unique young ladies. Many of her stylish wares, all of which are made right here in

Minneapolis, are available online via her established website. In June, Ms. Berg will be making the bold but logi-cal career move (subconsciously planned since childhood) to New York City. There, she will further develop her brand and balance her new life and studio in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Tailoring each persodress to the personality of the wearer. Berg radiates a perfect blend of both edge and ultra-femininity in both her designs and her persona. “As an art-ist, I do want some surprise, some edge, some artistic lines and unexpected avant-garde’ness in each piece…”

Jennifer Kirby is a broker and realtor of the small boutique company, Kirby Fine Homes, which specializes in historic and luxury homes through-out the Twin Cities. She has played a key role in not only listing historic homes, but in their preservation. One of the homes whose story she helped tell is now one of her listings: The Donald-son Mansion, the famed Lowery Hill estate built in 1906 for one of the founders of Donaldson Department Store. “The current owner contacted me to list the Donaldson Mansion because of my historic home background,” Jennifer explained. “He really wanted a realtor who understood pres-ervation and finding the buyer that is going to love the house as much as he does, as he has spent 10 years restoring it.”

When sold by the Donaldson family in 1959, the estate was subdivided into six separate lots. The current owner has reunited three lots of the original estate, and it’s now one of the largest residential properties in Minneapolis. Jennifer’s historic home affiliations include the Minnesota Historical Society, Preservation Alliance of Minnesota, and she is an Old Home Certified Instructor. Jennifer is also a Certified Luxury Home Specialist. “It’s a national designation that one can only earn by selling top-tiered homes in your market,” Jennifer stated. ” Unlike other certifications you get through courses, for this you have to have a proven sales history of selling luxury homes. “Combining my love of historic homes and luxury homes is a perfect niche for the Lake of the Isles community because they tend to go hand-in-hand.” Find out more about Jennifer Kirby at historichomesofminnesota.com and finehomesofminneapolis.com.

Darren and Sheba Ennis, owners of The Sample Room Restaurant make a great first impression. This I discovered while meeting them at a networking event at The Marquette last year. So, it didn’t surprise me that they were in the business of entertaining people, and hospitality. They are a lovely couple, so when I was invited to a tasting at their restaurant, for Lake of the Isles Maga-zine, I was eager to attend. Darren and Sheba call the Isles neighborhood their home, and their restaurant is poised on the edge of the Mississippi, in the ever-growing NE Neighborhood and Arts district. It is surprising how accessible it is from Isles. A mere 12-minute drive, according to Google.

The first thing you will notice is the charm-ing turn of the century building and facade. There is a long history to this place and the Ennises take pride in details, from the original pressed tin ceiling to the accoutre-ments that surround the saloon-style dining room. The bar is flanked by cozy booths and vintage wood tables. I would be remiss to exclude the friendly family that is The Sam-ple Room. They were kind and enthusiastic about the preparations we were about to enjoy; always eager to share details on what made this dressing or sauce “one of a kind.” “Family farmed” and “locally produced” are great adages, yet it is evident the SR posse have been doing this for a long time. And once their kitchen was done finessing the courses of the evening, words you would not find at the top your vocabulary would be “plain” or predictable.” To this, there were no exceptions. And though it might not otherwise seem adventurous, in this case, go ahead and try the chicken.

Want to improve your health? Before you invest in personal training, expensive workout equipment or a home gym, think again. You already have all the equipment you really need: your two feet. Walking has been credited to better health by professionals. According to a large study of nearly 40,000 women over a 12-year period, walking just 20 minutes a day will slice your risk of stroke by 30%. Picking up the pace by walking briskly reduced the risk of a stroke by a whopping 40%.

Written by N2 Staff Writer, Elizabeth McCabe

WALK YOUR WAY TO BETTER HEALTH:

ONE STEP TIME!

However, regardless of your gender, walking can help reduce blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. But that’s not all! This low-impact exercise can also reduce depression, improve sleep, reduce mental decline and improve cardiovascu-lar health. It can also help blood sugar levels, proving beneficial to those who are diabetic or are even at a pre-diabetic state.

How does that work? Moderate exercise causes your muscles to use more glucose. This will cause blood sugar levels to be low-ered, which is an important step to get your body back to where

it should be. Keeping regular walking a priority in your life can pay off in improved health for years to come.

To lose weight, experts recommend 10,000 steps a day, which is five miles. But you might get in more steps than you think. Tap into your technology. If you have an iPhone 5 or iPhone 6, you already have a built in pedometer under your Health App. It automatically tracks steps and can provide a daily average of steps. How convenient!

Walking boosts overall health. According to the U.S. Physi-cal Activity Study, people who walked five times a week (for 30 minutes) found that they had more energy, confidence, and even felt healthier in comparison to those who did not walk fre-quently. One step at a time is all it takes to a better lifestyle!

Still hesitant to hit the pavement? Here’s some common com-plaints about walking:

1. It’s boring!Walking doesn’t have to be boring! Grab a friend (even if it’s the four-legged type) and go for a walk. Even better is when you can walk in a scenic setting, whether that is in your neigh-borhood or even your local park. Walking with a group of people only adds to the fun. You’ll be burning calories before you know it…

2. I’m not really breaking a sweat. Is this workout really effective?Actually, walking is more effective than you might think. Regu-lar walking can help maintain your weight and depending upon your caloric intake can also help you lose a few pounds. It can also help reduce the visceral fat that gathers around the waist-line. Belly fat is easily combated through walking. Expect to lose 1 inch every 4 weeks by brisk walking 20 minutes a day (or 2 ½ hours a week).

So what are you waiting for … get walking!
