Skilled excellence This past year Lakeland students excelled in provincial, national and international industry competitions. Interior Design Technology students Kelsey Guenter, Lisa Godwin, Jessica Leasak, Dani Rau and Laura Underwood were selected as finalists in a North American student competition for kitchen and bath design. Jenna Nibourg earned a $1,000 scholarship in another design competition hosted by General Electric. Other students demonstrating excellence this year were Catherine Rumjan (Parts Technician) and Claude Forseille (Heavy Equipment Technician-off road) who were named Alberta’s top student apprentices in their trade. Instructors were also recognized for their great work. Parts technician instructor Randy Hobbis won the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board’s Top Instructor Award - North. Peter Walsh received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Canadian Association of Diploma in Agriculture Programs. Working closely with local communities, adult learning councils, and school divisions is a priority for Lakeland. The college currently has representation on six learning councils plus local economic development committees. Earlier this year, Lakeland entered into an agreement with the Lloydminster Public and Lloydminster Catholic school divisions that enables Grade 12 students to take university transfer courses while in high school. Lakeland is also involved in a dual credit project with East Central Alberta Catholic Schools. Lakeland continues to partner with schools in Buffalo Trail Public Schools and St. Jerome’s School in Vermilion (part of East Central Alberta Catholic Schools) to deliver career and technology studies (CTS) courses to high school students. Courses include interior design, electrical, automotive mechanics, carpentry, welding, firefighting and cosmetology. Community connections Talented and tough Globally-minded Lakeland’s land base near the Vermilion campus has expanded! Earlier this year the college finalized the purchase of 100 per cent of the shares of Barrhill Farms which includes 10 quarters of land and a yard. The land is being used for student labs in agricultural and environmental sciences programs. As for the yard, one of the houses and a nearby workshop will be key pieces in Lakeland’s Centre for Sustainable Innovation (CSI). The development and demonstration facility will showcase applied research and training in renewable energy. Lakeland students had the opportunity to enrich their Live the Learning educational experiences by travelling to locations such as Belize, England and Mexico. In addition to experiencing the different business, agricultural, human services and educational systems in other countries, the travel experiences also gave students opportunities for personal growth and discovery. They learned valuable lessons whether it was from working with people in a Mexican migrant camp, touring a Belize citrus farm, or studying macroeconomics in London. Next spring, students in human services programs will have the option to complete a practicum in the Dominican Republic. Lakeland also increased its international partnerships and is currently involved in two Education for Employment projects in Tanzania, emergency services training with industry in Egypt and the Caribbean, and a student transfer venture with Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute. In addition, several memorandums of understanding have been signed with institutions throughout the Caribbean. More land for labs In the riding arena or on the field, court, ice or trail, Lakeland student athletes had a banner season. Special mention goes to athletes on the Lakeland Rustlers’ men’s futsal team who won the gold medal in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) championship. Women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, and women’s futsal teams all advanced to ACAC bronze medal games. Volleyball player Brianne Collette smashed her way through many Rustler records and – for the third consecutive year – was named a Canadian Colleges Academic All-Canadian. As for Lakeland’s outstanding rodeo team, Steph Denham was named barrel racing champion and Peter Lowry won team roping at the Canadian National College Finals Rodeo. Scott Guenthner was named Cowboy of the Year. 2011 Community Report Lloydminster Campus Vermilion Campus www.lakelandcollege.ca

Lakeland is in its first year of a five-year research program funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) which involves studying renewable energy technologies for the region. As part ofthe NSERC project, Lakeland partnered with the town ofElk Point to monitor and study the solar and wind electricity generation systems installed in the towns visitor centre. The study will provide insight into how solar and wind systems can be used in combination to supply the electricity needs of the building. Real time performance data is available at www.lakelandecabin.ca/elkpoint.

Lakelands agriculture research program also received several recent boosts including a $125,918 grant from NSERC to buy equipment to measure the exact quantity of feed an animal eats compared to its total weight gain. In addition, Lakelands 2011 crop field research has expanded greatly due to the expansion in college farm land and the rebuild of a plot seeder that was donated by Viterra. To showcase Lakelands agricultural research program, the Grow Community of Independents has placed one of its three Western Canadian Total Acre field trials at the college. This trial will both showcase innovative crop protection products and demonstrate their return on investment by comparing different levels of quality vs. cost crop input practices.

Lakeland is also actively supporting regional economic development and entrepreneurship through leadership in the Lloydminster and Region Business Incubator project.

Program expansion, increased enrolment and a desire to provide students with facilities that are safe, attractive and equipped with the latest tools and technologies has led to a boom in capital projects at Lakeland.

Thanks to funding from the governments of Canada and Alberta plus private contributions, about $30 million has been spent in the last few years on new and maintenance capital projects. Projects at the Vermilion campus include an overhaul of the Applied Engineering building, modernization of residence buildings, construction of a new student centre, addition of a water treatment and reuse facility at the Emergency Training Centre, plus an upgrade of the high voltage system. At the Lloydminster campus, projects include the construction of a new child development centre and the development of new lab space for students in the esthetician program.

Lakeland is currently raising money to build a new power engineering lab at the Lloydminster campus so that oil and gas programming can be expanded.

Programming points The Interior Design Technology program received its second Excellence in Education Award from the National Kitchen and

Bath Association. Criteria for the award include a score of more than 93 per cent on two annual student work submissions. This years submissions by two second-year students received marks of 95.5 and 96.7 per cent. The program received its first Excellence in Education Award in 2008.

New majors and more course options are on the way for business students. Starting this fall, students will be able to choose from five program majors offered at the Lloydminster campus Accounting, Appraisal and Assessment, General Business, Marketing, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship. After completing a diploma, students can transfer into Athabasca Universitys Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Management degree programs offered at the Lloydminster campus.

People wanting to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from the University of Saskatchewan can now take their first year of pre-professional studies at the Lloydminster campus. The pre-professional year is followed by three years of nursing education leading to a BSN.

Lakelands Bachelor of Applied Science: Environmental Management program is in select company! It is one of only 10 environmental programs in Canada to receive accreditation from Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada and its Canadian Environmental Accreditation Commission.

    Building momentum

    Emergency Collaboration

With help from our friendsThanks to the generosity of individuals, businesses, organizations, alumni, and Lakeland employees, endowments for student awards, scholarships, and bursaries have increased to $4.5 million. Many of the contributions have gone into the Centennial Awards Endowment Fund which has increased to almost $3 million since October 2009.

In May, Lakeland collaborated with the Canadian Emergency Management College and the Alberta Emergency Management Agency to deliver a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) course at the colleges Emergency Training Centre. Twenty-eight specialized emergency responders includingforensic identification specialists, emergency medical services personnel and bomb technicians attended the course. This is the first time the intermediate level training course has been delivered outside of Ottawa.

Celebrating 100 yearsA centenary is definitely something to celebrate and Lakeland is getting ready to celebrate 2013 in a big way! The party kicks off in November 2012 and celebrations will continue until Nov. 17, 2013, the 100th anniversary of Lakelands official opening. So far the party schedule includes guest speakers, golf tournaments, formal galas, a prairie themed event circa 1913, and plenty of record-breaking activities for students.

Lakeland will also recognize a Century Club of events and people that were key ingredients in its long and successful history.
