Journey overview

Embark on this exciting 9-day itinerary that explores the glorious

landscapes of southern Chile, including various destinations that are well

off the beaten track. Once you cross the Bío-Bío River, the spectacular

Lake District begins some 500 km (310 miles) south of the Chilean capital

of Santiago. From this point on, temperatures are lower, the air more

humid, and snow-capped volcanoes and ancient forests drape the

landscape.

However, this region is not only about nature, but there are also

significant cultural attributes that make this terrain really interesting.

The Mapuche Indians form Chile’s largest ethnic group, and it was in this

area that they fiercely defended their land against the Incas and the

Spanish, proving themselves courageous and daunting opponents.

Neither empire advanced beyond this area, such was their resilience.

German settlers arrived to the region in the 19th Century, and their

stamp is particularly visible in-and-around Puerto Varas.

Marvel at Chile’s natural and cultural wonders while traversing this

breathtaking region.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ITINERARY:

Themed explorations of Santiago, the wine country and Chilean

Lakes Region in a private vehicle with your own guide.

Biological Reserve.

Hotel Cumbres Lastarria

Santiago, Chile

Day 1

On arrival at Santiago’s International Airport you will be warmly

welcomed by a member of the andBeyond team, who will assist

you through passport control & baggage claim. You will then be

driven to your hotel in Santiago.

In the afternoon, enjoy a tour dedicated to highlighting the

contrasts between the older, more centrally located areas, and

the modern uptown stretch of Santiago. The adventure will be

conducted in chronological order, allowing you the opportunity

to understand the origins of the city, and the urban sprawl over

the past 200 years, when Santiago morphed from town to great

metropolis. Focal points will include Cerro Santa Lucía, where

the city was founded in 1542, the Plaza de Armas, the Central

Market, Estación Mapocho (a former railway station), and La

Moneda, the Presidential Palace. The second half of the tour

will take you to the residential areas of Providencia and Ñuñoa,

and the cosmopolitan financial district of Las Condes, before

reaching La Dehesa which lies at the foothills of the Andes, and

offers a superb vantage point for a panoramic view of the city.

Afterwards, you will return to Hotel Cumbres Lastarria for an

evening spent at your leisure.

Day 2

After breakfast, your guide will meet you for a full day’s

discovery of some of Chile’s finest wineries.

Blessed with perfect terroir and climate, Chile has established

itself as a major producer of high quality, value for money

wines. This tour focusses on small, independent wineries in the

central coastal region.

Wineries located between Santiago and the coast are producing

some of the most interesting wines in the country. Each morning

a thick cool fog blankets the land, giving way to bright sunshine

in the afternoon. These are ideal conditions for grapes such as

Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Not only are

these wineries creating a high quality product, they are also

adhering to ecologically sound practices. Surprisingly, Chile has

by far the largest average winery size of any wine producing

nation.

After your day’s excursion, you will return to your hotel in

Santiago.

Overnight at Cumbres Lastarria Hotel.

Day includes:

Breakfast at Cumbres Lastarria

Lunch at a winery

Pucon, Chile

Day 6

Today, you will be transferred to Pucón, your last destination

on this exceptional Chile tour.

Generally considered as the adventure capital of Chile, the area

around Pucón offers myriad outdoor activities such as rafting,

hiking, skiing, kayaking, and fly-fishing. There is however far

much more to this multi-faceted destination. Among its many

natural highlights, there are thermal springs and gorgeous

national parks. Volcanoes, mountains, and lakes create one of

the most beautiful natural sites Chile has to offer. The area is

also the seat of the Mapuche, Chile’s main ethnic group. Their

culture is very much alive in the area through cuisine,

traditions, and language. This ancient civilisation has forged

through a difficult history, continually facing opposition, but

they have remained free and independent. Mapuche art is

known for its beautiful metalwork, especially silver jewellery

such as headdresses and necklaces as well unique wooden

carvings. They also have an ancient tradition of weaving textiles

and carpets. Pucón has a small Mapuche Museum and many

places where you can still explore the traditional Mapuche way

of life. Pucón itself is a picturesque town, which depends

heavily on tourism but has not succumbed to opting for a

‘touristy’ aesthetic.

Vira. You are encouraged to explore a new adventure or

experience every day, with the aim of understanding the mystic

ambiance of these ancient Mapuche territories. The guides at

andBeyond Vira Vira are passionate about their work, and about

the excursions on offer. With some thirty options to choose

from, the list may seem daunting; however, your guides will

expertly help you to tailor-make your adventures according to

your personal preferences and level of difficulty.

Activities are centred on nature and adventure, with treks and

horseback rides of various durations. There are also

explorations of the nearby Villarrica Volcano, visiting its

Of course cuisine plays an important role in the Vira Vira

international offerings by blending Chilean and ancient

indigenous recipes, all created with the freshest seasonal

ingredients. Each day the chef prepares a selection of two full

Pucon, Chile

the homeland of the courageous Mapuche people, breath-taking

glacial lakes mirror the frosted tips of volcanoes and lush flora

decorates national parks. Once a war ground, this area

stretching over 99 square kilometres (38 square miles), saw the

Mapuche people resisting the advances of Inca and Spanish

invaders. Thriving farmlands transformed into a tranquil tourist

mecca, where a colourful intricately woven tapestry of quaint

villages, such as Pucón are sprawled along the shores of the

Villarrica Lake, near the active Villarrica Volcano. Evergreen

rainforests, sparkling lakes and massive Araucaria (or monkey

landscape waiting to be explored.

Nestled amidst a spectacular sprawling 22 hectare estate is the

exceptional &Beyond Vira Vira. Immersed in a beautiful park

with natural lagoons, flowing rivers and sensational views of the

Villarrica Volcano, luxurious grounds boast both a magnificent

lodge and Hacienda with beautifully appointed suites and villas.

A modern working farm, organic vegetable garden and state-of-

the-art cheese factory complete the estate that is set just

outside of Pucon, Chile. Freshly grown produce is sourced from

the farm and used to create award-winning Chilean-inspired

menus. Guests can enjoy myriad exploits, hosted by

knowledgeable and engaging guides, including trekking in the

national parks; horseback riding in the cordilleras; scenic

helicopter flights over the Villarrica Volcano; skiing,

snowboarding, snowshoeing or snowmobiling in winter. The list

is seemingly endless with fly fishing, mountain biking, and a

variety of water sports. All excursions are specifically tailored

according to your interests and fitness levels.

Why we love it

Every morning, guests have an opportunity to discuss

their daily adventures with their expert guides, ensuring their experience is tailor-made at every turn.
