First introduced in Paris in 1883, Lakmé is set in India in the XIX century when, during theEnglish colonization, the population was forced to gointo hiding for practicing their own religion.

The plot reveals a troubled love story between Lakmé, daughter of a priest Brahman, and an officer of the English army who unseen enters the temple, becomes fascinated by herremarkable beauty and falls in love at first sight.

In retaliation for the blasphemy of the holy place, the father of Lakmé ambushed the soldier and stabbed him. Although badly wounded, Lakmé has compassion saving his life, keeping him hidden and fallingin love with him.

The romance ends when the soldier is convinced by an English officer to go back to the army. Lakmé realizesthat she is a victim of animpossible love and she commits suicide.
