He was born in New York, on 27th October 1923.

At 1949 Lichtenstein married Isabel Wilson, who previously had been married to Ohio artist Michael Sarisky. Afterwards he began teaching at the State University of New York at Oswego in 1958. He divorced in 1965. Lichtenstein married his second wife, Dorothy Herzka, in 1968.Lichtenstein died in 1997, at New York University Medical Center.Before 1963 the couple sold the family house in Higland Park, New Jersey.Where he had been hospitalized for several weeks.He was survived by his second wife and his sons , David and Mitchel , from his first marriage.
