Back in the days before iPads andAngry Birds, car trips for kidsconsisted of a lot of looking out the

window. Bothmy parents grew up in Lam-pasas, and themajority of my family stilllives there. We usually went at least once amonth to visit, and for a kid, a three-hourdrive in the backseat of aminivanmay aswell be a trip across the Atlantic Ocean ona slow freighter. I did a lot of looking outthe window, and by the timeI was 10 or so, my eyeballshad sucked up every scenebetween here and the hillcountry.Wewould always cut

through the Brazos bottomon the initial leg of our jour-ney. As an adult, I still cutthrough that way sometimesbecause I love driving past the endless rowsof cotton. Twenty years ago I could not havedreamed of amoremonotonous bore. It wasalways a special treat when there was a cropduster to break themonotony. The aerial ac-robatics of those bright yellow planes as theyswooped across the fields provided a thrill

greater than any number of points scoredon any video game or app. I would cranemyneck and climb to the backwindow of thevan to watch as long as I could. In our cover story we take a look at two

herbicides that can help get rid of some inva-sive plants that damage your pasture. If you are prompted to use either of these

because of this article, and you plan on hir-ing a crop duster, invite me out to watch theshow.Hope you enjoy this issue, and thanks for

Texas A&M AgriLife Exten-sion Service cotton economistJohnRobinson recently touredwhat he calls “the West Texasof China,” trekking to south-ern Xinjiang to get a first-handlook at farming and harvestingpractices. The result of his two-week

trip abroad was a collection ofobservations — views of farm-ingpracticesandother insights—thatwill serveasaids in fore-casting cotton trends for Texasand U.S. farmers, plus help de-termine potential worldwidedemand.“Cotton is obviously king

there,” he said. “They’re tryingtodiversify theregion’sagricul-ture by growingmore ‘jujubee’orchards — sort of like a date— potatoes and other (crops).”He said there is little trans-

portation system in place, ob-serving carts that typically areused for onions and other com-modities being hauled.“If I had to guess I’d say that

Xinjiang is probably like WestTexas in that it will be the lastbastion of domestic Chinesecotton production,” he said“They have to overcome prob-lemswith saline soils, and lackof labor, and the cost of haul-ing cotton bales from there tothe eastern portion of China.

One way they’re dealing withthe latter is trying to establishmorecottonspinningandcloth/apparel (towels) manufacturedlocally in Xinjiang.”In Xinjiang, it is “incredibly

dry and is much like West Tex-as,” Robinson said.“Everything is irrigated, and

the irrigation system appearsto be a system of canals tap-ping into reservoirs of snow-melt water from the nearbymountains,” he said. “I saw afew instances of visible white

salt on the soil surface; it wasobvious theyhaveasoil salinityproblem.”Most of the fields he viewed

had been harvested, mostly byhand.“The fields themselves look

NewsCarefulmanagementaids survivalduringadrought

By James RogeRsSpecial to The Post

TheU.S.DroughtMonitor re-leasedonNov. 20 shows thema-jority of Oklahoma and Texasin severe to extreme drought, with northern Oklahoma andthe Panhandle in exceptionaldrought. The drought impacttype in these regions rangesfrom short- (less than sixmonths) to long-term (greaterthan sixmonths).Areas currently in short-

term impact are feeling the ef-fects on seasonal agriculturalproduction. For example, mostof the wheat crop is being hurtand grassland production hassuffered. Areas in long-termdrought are facing severe im-pacts on grasslands, and sur-face and subsurface water sup-plies.To add to this, National Oce-

anic and Atmospheric Admin-istrationmodels indicate that 9to 15 inches of precipitationarerequiredtoendcurrentdrought

conditions by the end of Febru-ary 2013. The seasonal droughtoutlook, however, is calling fordrought persistence throughFebruary, and, from FebruarythroughJune, the forecastmod-els are giving equal chances forabove,belowornormalprecipi-tation.It is hard to find encourage-

ment when facing current con-ditions and the outlook. Thereare reasons for optimism, how-ever:

•Remainingawareof currentconditions, accepting themandlooking at the forecast predic-tions gives you better oppor-tunities for long-range forageplanning.• Pasture and range drought

insurance is available. Pasture,Rangeland,Forage insurance isa risk management tool devel-oped by the USDA’s Risk Man-agementAgencyandreinsuredby the Federal Crop InsuranceCorporation.Thisprogramwas

piloted in 2007 and is based ona rainfall index in Texas andOklahoma. The crop year runsfrom Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Sign upfor 2013 closed on Nov. 15, butproducers should keep this inmind for future use.

• Cool-season annual grassproduction was excellent inspring 2012. These grasses areagain present and, with abovenormal temperaturesexpected,

Newsonly need timely rainfall forspring 2013 production.• Excellent 2012 spring rain-

fallmeanta lotof haywasmade.Currenthaypricesarereportedas steady (Oklahoma Hay Mar-ket Report, Nov. 15), indicatingthat supplies are presently ad-equate.

• Conditions in 2012 did nothelp grassland rejuvenation, but grasslands did not appeartoexperienceadditional regres-sion. It is going to take a longtime forperennialgrasslands toimprove and there is no silverbullet for recovery. Rain, restand good grazing managementwill continue to be keys to reju-venation.• Light insect damage in fall

2012 means greater opportu-nity to grow more forage withless cost. Expectations for fallarmyworm damage were high, but never occurred. Remain onthe lookout for armyworms inearly2013,about thetimespringforage flush begins.

•Thecattlemarket continuestomaintainstrength. This isdef-initely something tobeoptimis-tic about. The market often issoftwhendealingwithdrought. At least there has been a strongmarket during this drought.•Herbicidesandfertilizercan

helpyougrowmore foragewithless moisture. Look for weedpressure to begin as early asMarch. Timely scouting, weedidentification and use of theproper herbicide at the properrate will help you grow more

forage. Likewise, having fertil-izerappliedwillhelpgrowmoreintroduced (bermudagrass, oldworldbluestem, etc.) foragewithlessrainfall.Baseyourfertilizerapplications on soil test reportsand forage demand.

• Expect a spring forageflush. This year it may only beadequate, but we will grow for-age this spring. Be preparedto take advantage of it when itcomes.Besure to takeoffspringflush by the first of May to givewarm-season grasses a chanceto recover. There will also beopportunities to establish sum-mer annual short season (crab-grass, sudan, sorghum-sudan)forages that can takeadvantageof seasonal rainfall. The plant-ingwindow for summerannualforages is wide, extending intoJune, but, to take advantage ofseasonalmoisture,considerget-ting them in the ground in lateApril or early May.

Things will get better. Untilthen, producers will need to doan above average job of foragemanagement. This means pro-viding forages seasonal rest, weedcontrolandpropergrazingmanagement, and maintaininga grazing rotation.

In other words, take advan-tage of all the tools in yourtoolbox.

Weed them outTwonewproducts improve sandbur, mesquite control

By RoBeRt FeaRsSpecial to The Post

During the past three years, two new herbicides havebeen introduced into rangeand pasturemarkets thatimprove control of two

very troublesomeweeds: sandbur andmesquite.Pastora herbicide was introduced by

DuPont Crop Production in 2010 for thecontrol of sandbur and certain otherweeds in Bermuda grass pastures andhayfields. Active ingredients in Pastoraare 56.2 percent nicosulfuron and 15percentmetsulfuron. Thoughmetsul-furon has been used formany years inpastures, nicosulfuron is new to thismarket.During the spring of last year, Dow

AgroSciences launched Sendero, a newherbicide that offers goodmesquitecontrol in addition tomimosa, red-bud, wisteria, black and honey locust, kudzu and invasive weeds such asthistles, broomweed, croton and bittersneezeweed. This is the first newmes-quite control product to be releasedsince 1987.

Pastora herbicidePastora is formulated as a dry

flowablematerial, has no haying, grazing or feeding restrictions and isnot a restricted-use product. In addi-tion to sandbur, the product controlsgrasses such as Johnsongrass, Italianryegrass, Pensacola bahiagrass andcrabgrass. One of the broadleaf weedsit controls is henbit. Broadleaf weedcontrol with Pastora is through pre-emergence as well as postemergenceactivity. Grass control occurs onlyfrom a postemergence treatment.

Coastal sandbur (Cenchrus spinifex)is an undesirable grass species thatspans the southern U.S. from coastto coast and is found as far north asKansas and Virginia. This troublesomeplant also is known as field sandbur, grassbur or simply sandbur. Botanistschanged the name, and in some lit-erature it may still be called by its oldscientific name, Cenchrus echinatus.Sandbur is a problem in pastures andhay fields because it reduces foragequantities and qualities, and some-times because it can injure themouths

of livestock.“Cattle often graze young sandbur

plants,” said Paul Baumann of TexasA&MAgriLife Extension Service.“During late stages of seed produc-tion, however, capsules or burs areproduced that penetrate tissue in andaround the cow’smouth, causing painand sometimes infection.”These capsulesmake the sandbur

plantmore drought tolerant in dry, sandy soils than other grass species. The burs soak up soil moisture andhold it until the seeds receive othergermination stimulants such as warmtemperature sufficient light and cor-rect day length.“Timing is critical with this herbi-

cide for sandbur control,” Baumannsaid. “Themost important consider-ation for sandbur control with Pastorais recognition of grassbur early growthstages. Sandburs should be sprayedwith Pastora when they are less thantwo inches tall.”

“Young seedlings can be recognized

by their usual hairless leaves,” Bau-mann said. “Sheaths surroundingthe stemmay have hairs along theirmargins andwill generally becomepubescent (with hairs) as the plantma-tures. Stems are somewhat flattenedand often purplish-covered at the base.Tillers develop early in plant growth, which adds to the weeds competitive-ness. When you are doubtful aboutidentification, dig seedling plants andyouwill often find the bur attached inthe root area.”“For sandbur control, apply Pastora

at 1 to 1.5 ounces per acre as a broad-cast spray, either through groundequipment or by air,” said Craig Alfordof DuPont. “Twenty gallons per acre oftotal spray solution are recommendedfor ground applications and five gal-lons per acre for aerial treatments. Anon-ionic surfactant or a crop oil con-centratemust be used in the spraymixto obtain good results.”

“Applications of Pastoramay resultin temporary yellowing or stunting

of bermudagrass, but this responsewill more likely occur if the grass isstressed from adverse environmentalconditions such as extreme tempera-tures ormoisture, abnormal soil con-ditions or cultural practices,” Alfordsaid. “Yellowing and stunting is mini-mized by treating when bermudagrasshas less than two inches of new growthduring initial green-up, or by treatingwithin seven days after hay cutting.”

Sendero herbicideSendero is amixture of twomol-

ecules previously registered for use onrangeland and pastures, aminopyralidand clopyralid. Aminopyralid is oneof the active ingredients in the twoproducts, GrazonNext HL herbicideand Chaparral herbicide. Clopyralid isthe single active ingredient in Reclaimherbicide. The new product is a “onejug” pre-mixmeaning that tankmixingof herbicides is not required.

Purchasingabull canbeadif-ficult and sometimes expensiveproposition forabeef cattlepro-ducer. Ranchers got an insidelook at how to overcome someof these challenges at a recentworkshop held in College Sta-tionby theTexasA&MAgriLifeExtension Service.“We have a lot of breeds of

cattle in the U.S. and differentcattle workwell in different en-vironments,” saidJasonCleere,AgriLife Extension beef cattlespecialist, who co-led thework-shopwithJasonBanta,AgriLifeExtension beef cattle specialistat Overton.Approximately 50 produc-

ers attended the workshop, and organizers said the strongnumbers will lead to organiz-ing a fall workshop. Cleere dis-

cussed the different types ofretail beef available to consum-ers — prime, choice and select— which is more prevalent atgrocery stores, he said. When selecting a bull, Cleere

said, “I encourageyouto lookatthe big picture.”Fertility and potential calf

birthweightswere just a few ofseveral points to study, he said.“Geneticpotential forgrowth

and price per pound are otherthings to consider,” he said.Cleere advised producers

to avoid buying bulls with anunknown background. He saidproducersshouldconsiderbuy-ing from a breeder that special-izes in producingquality genet-ics for commercial operations.Next, considerhowmuchyou

are willing to pay for a bull.“Howmuch do I spend? I like

to turn this around and sayhowmuchdo I invest in abull?”

Banta said breed type, indi-vidual performance data, pedi-gree and visual appraisal aresome of the items to considerwhen purchasing a bull.

“You are not going to use allof it during selection, but thosethat apply to the goals of youroperation,” he said.

what is the best breed type?“That’s the million dollar

Heterosis or hybrid vigor alsoplaysabigroleincattleselectionfor Texas ranchers, he added.

“The more harsh your envi-ronmental conditions are, themore important heterosis is,”Cleere said
