With the number of cruise lines announcing future deployment plans to China growing week by week, it’s no surprise some think it’s ‘too much, too quick, too fast’. Due to this, Azamara Club Cruises president and chief executive officer Larry Pimentel believes this growth will spill over into New Zealand. “China is such an enormous market in population that so many ships are moving to China. . . It’s a lot of capac-ity, and what’s going to happen to that capacity, it’s going to come down into Australia and New Zealand,” he told Travel Today. “I think your mar-ket [New Zealand] is going to have opportunities for growth that are go-ing to be quite excessive in 2016/2017 and in particular, 2018.”

. . . Limiting FactorsC r u i s e Ne w Z e a l a n d’s Ke v i n O’Sullivan says while they are also expecting ‘major growth’, there are a couple of potentially limiting factors. To begin with, O’Sullivan says that some infrastructure needs improv-ing, particularly in Auckland. “We really need Auckland to be on its game as far as the ports are

concerned to make sure we can maximise returns for the rest of the country,” he says. Pimentel agrees, saying depending on how the growth is handled, it could be an opportunity or a prob-lem for New Zealand; as ‘many places don’t have enough berths for ships.’O’Sullivan added that the Govern-ment’s border levy fee may also stunt the growth, saying ‘the cruise ships are completely opposed to it’. It is due to come into effect 01 Jan, however, Cruise New Zealand has united with the Tourism Industry Association in a bid to delay it by a year.

. . . Asia GrowthOverall, cruise tourism in Asia is growing at double-digit rates, both in capacity and as a passenger source market, according to Cruise Lines International Association’s 2014 Asia Cruise Trends Study.

5th Quantum For RoyalRoyal Caribbean Cruises Ltd has entered into an agreement with Meyer Werft in Germany to order a fifth Quantum-class ship for deliv-ery in 2020.

Kiwis To Benefit From China Expansion?

Sunshine Coast Ramps Up Cruise ProfileQueensland’s Sunshine Coast will add Azamara Quest and MS Amsterdam to its fleet of cruise visitors over the next year, with 10 cruise vessels and over 17,000 passengers scheduled to call into Mooloolaba from Dec-Sep. These additions build on the successful visits by P&O Cruises vessels over the past year; the first cruise line to add the destination to its cruise itiner-aries in 2014. Sunshine Coast Destination chief executive Simon Ambrose says they look forward to welcoming even more vessels in the future and establishing the Sunshine Coast as a favourite port.

Sunshine Coast operators are reporting a successful visit to New Zealand for their roadshow last week, where they updated agents on what’s happening in the destination including increasing awareness of Air New Zealand’s new summer flights.Seven local operators joined Sun-shine Coast Destination Limited (SCDL) on the trade mission in Auckland, Hamilton and Christ-church, providing updates and train-ing to over 200 retail and wholesale travel agents, product managers and other key industry and media con-tacts. A consumer event with House of Travel in Christchurch was also added into the schedule this year.“The New Zealand market has al-ways shown strong visitation and is one of the largest international source markets for the Sunshine Coast with 58,000 visitors making the trip across the ditch to the year ending Jun 2015. The latest trade mission should further boost the tourism num-bers and support for the NZ direct flight service to the Sunshine Coast,” says SCDL boss Simon Ambrose.

“Complimentary to the timing of our mission, is an agent incentive, the innovative new digital campaign targeting Kiwis that we have just launched in partnership with Tour-ism and Events Queensland and also the announcement NZ has extra flights to the Sunshine Coast in 2016.”

Incorporating Tabs On TravelWed 04 Nov 15 p6Sydney Corporate Famil

AKL Koru LoungeConsultants on the Famil started the trip in style, at Air NZ’s revamped Koru Lounge. The living wall was a highlight for some agents, while the ability to order your own coffee on your phone via the NZ app was all round.Pictured: Air NZ’s Kendal Tobeck with Samantha Roberts from Orbit World Travel HLZ pictured at the AKL Koru Lounge’s living wall.

Sydney and New South Wales attract a significant number of Kiwi business travellers annual-ly—and with anecdotal feedback suggesting more New Zealanders are combining a little leisure time on their work trips, corporate agents on the NZ/VA Great Aussie Escape Sydney famil experienced the best of both worlds.Consultants on the trip sampled the best of Sydney from on the harbour to climbing high above the city, to fine dining and exploring behind the scenes at the Sydney Opera House.

. . . VA/NZ CorporatesThe NZ/VA alliance has upgraded its offering for corporate customers this year, and consultants on the weekend’s Sydney corporate famil got to experience the carriers’ pre-mium in-flight product first hand.VA now offers business class seats on all of its Tasman flight and NZ has its popular Premium Economy product available on its widebody aircraft operating on the Tasman.

“The improvements are also rolling out across our ground products, with refreshed lounges in Auckland and Sydney, therefore it’s great to share these experiences with our TMC agents, providing them the most up to date product knowledge to pass on to their clients,” says Antony Price, NZ’s general manager New Zealand and Pacific Islands sales.

Getting AroundSydney is undergoing going tremen-dous change. There’s construction across the city, and a number of road closures are in place due to the infrastructure required for Sydney’s new light rail development. So it’s worth mentioning the possibility of road closures and traffic delays to clients with a jam packed itin-erary. The train from the airport to Sydney’s CBD (AirportLink) is said to be an increasingly popular way for business travellers to avoid potential road congestion, both to and from the city. For details, see airportlink.com.au

Combining Work With Pleasure In Sydney

Dine Shop And SeeAustralia’s latest visitor arrival stats (IVS) show, not surprisingly, that eating out at a restaurant or cafe was the most popular activ-ity for Kiwis (85.3%) visiting New South Wales. Shopping was the next most popular option (63.3%) well ahead of sightseeing (44.3%). For an overview of the state’s dining, shopping and touring options, see destinationnsw.com.au

. . . H&M OpensHugely popular chain store H&M opened in Sydney’s Pitt St mall at the weekend—complete with crowd control and a police presence. The flagship store boasts men’s, women’s, children’s and homeware sections and got a great big thumbs up from those on the corporate famil who braved the crowds.

The Kiwi agents arrived in style before heading straight out on the Sydney Harbour with Sensational Sydney Cruises to enjoy the Syndey sunshine and icons.

Sydney Shows And Anything GoesVisitors to Syndey are spoiled for choice in terms of events, and the restaurants, on offer. A popular addition to a corporate itinerary is to take in one of the city’s ever-changing range of stage shows. A number of restau-rants offer pre or post threatre dining, with the choice of a la carte of fixed menus. The Kiwi contingent got the chance to dine at the esteemed Aria restaurant, which is located on Circular Quay, just a short walk to the Sydney Opera house for clients taking in a show there. Anything Goes was the show of choice for the group (which earned rave reviews) and coming soon to Sydney is the Queen inspired musical We Will Rock You.DNSW’s Sam Cameron is pictured on left with Nicola Segal from Virgin Australia, Air NZ’s Kendal Tobeck, Tahlee Renyolds from Tandem Travel and Megan Caughey from Orbit World TRavel DUD
