The space program was set up by JFK in 1962. This was after the Russians launched Sputnik in 1957. The mission was to land on the moon and return the astronauts home safely before the end of the decade.2

The CrewNeil ArmstrongMichael CollinsEdwin Buzz Aldrin Jr.

Neil Armstrong- was born on August 5, 1930, he developed an interest in flying at the age of 2. Immediately after high school he received a scholarship from the U.S Navy. He enrolled at Purdue University and in 1949 was called into active duty by the navy. He was released form the navy in 1952.

Buzz Aldrin- was born on January 20, 1930. He attended the U.S Military Academy at West Point. In 1951 he attended the Air Force and began pilot lessons. After the apollo 11 mission he returned to the airforce in 1971 and then retired one year later.

Michael Collins- was born on October 30, 1930. He was born in Rome, Italy, but then moved to Washington D.C where he graduated from high school in 1952. From 1959 to 1963 he had logged over 4,200 hours of flying time.3The LaunchJuly 16, 1969Many practice launches had gone successful before official launchLaunched from the Kennedy Space CenterBroadcasted worldwide on television

The launch took place in July of 1969 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. There were practices launches after Apollo 10 was launched and in orbit. Also they tested them after the splashdown of Apollo 10.
