Schuylkill River Competition: AMTRAKs main corridor through Philadelphia lies just outside Center City, on the Western bank

of the Schuylkill River. Wrapping around the station and hugging the Western bank of the River, Interstate 76 provides the city

with one of its most heavily used entries and exits for passenger vehicles. The goal was to connect the people of Philadelphia

to the waterfront by creating an alternative route for the highway.

CONCEPTS:- STREET LEVEL TROLLEY SYSTEM RUNNING NORTH AND SOUTH FROM THE 30TH STREET STATION.- INTERSTATE, AMTRAK, AND SEPTA NORTH OF STA-TION DECKED OVER, EAST OF STATION TUNNELED UNDER RIVER, SOUTH OF STATION BURIED.- INTRODUCE NEW TRANSPORTATION HUB TO THE EAST OF THE STATION.

CONCEPTS:- THE PARKS WERE PLACED IN OPPORTUNISTIC AREAS ALONG THE SCHUYLKILL AND AREAS AROUND THE CITY.- GREEN ROOFS WERE PLACED ON ALL NEW INFRA-STRUCTURE.- PEDESTRIAN FLOW TOOK ADVANTAGES OF THE NEW LAND BRIDGES.

    CONCEPTS:

    - INTRODUCE MIXED USE APARTMENTS THAT OFFER A WIDE VARI-ETY OF COMFORTABLE HOUSING OPTIONS ALL WITH EQUAL VIEWS AND USE OF A COMMUNITY PLAZA AREA.

    - DOWNTOWN WATERFRONT FACILITATES THE MIXED USE APART-MENTS OVER TOP OF THE DECKED OVER INTERSTATE, AMTRAK, AND SEPTA LINES.

    - OFFICE BUILDINGS AND TRANSPORTATION HUB WILL MEET THE NEEDS FOR THE NEW SEPTA LINE, TROLLEY LINE, AND ADDITIONAL OFFICE SPACE.

    - THE TRANSPORTATION PARK WILL SERVE AS A RETREAT TO THE DOWNTOWN OFFICE CORRIDOR AND PASSENGERS OF THE TRANSPORTA-TION SYSTEMS ALIKE.

    - UTILIZING THE EXISTING SEPTA BRIDGE THE PEDESTRIAN LAND BRIDGE CREATES A DIRECT EAST WEST PEDESTRIAN PASSAGE TO THE NEW OFFICE AND TRANSPORTATION HUB AREA AND 30TH ST. STATION.

    - BEING RELIEVED FROM SOME OF ITS TRANSPORTATION RESPONSIBILI-TIES THE 30TH ST. STATION BECOMES A MONUMENT OF HISTORIC PHILADELPHIA AND SINGLE CITY ATTRACTION.

    - STREAMING FROM THE CENTER OF THE EAST PHILADELPHIA DOWN-TOWN DISTRICT THE JFK PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE ALLOWS YET ANOTH-ER PEDESTRIAN PASSAGE FROM EAST TO WEST IN A MORE INTIMATE AP-PROACH TO THE SCHUYLKILL RIVER.

    - THE URBAN PARK IS AN OPPORTUNISTIC PARK AREA FOR THE EAST SIDE OF THE SCHUYLKILL RIVER AND A CONNECTION TO BOTH THE JFK PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE AND THE PEDESTRIAN LAND BRIDGE.

    - THE MULTI PURPOSE FIELDS WILL MAINTAIN THEIR ORIGINAL CHARACTER AND BE ENHANCED BY THEIR NEW SURROUNDING FEA-TURES.

    - THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART AND THE SCULPTURE BRIDGE CREATE AN ARTS DISTRICT THAT WILL BRING A NEEDED ATTENTION TO THE SCHUYLKILL RIVER WATER FRONT.

Solution: Deck over railway and bury Interstate to provide open access to waterfront by foot. Convert AMTRAK bridge into

pedestrian bridge connecting Center City with West Philadelphia. New AMTRAK connection goes under Schuylkill River.

Project Overview: two bridges built in the 1960s are being replaced with three new bridges that will separate local and freeway

traffic. The existing 11th Street Bridge has potential to become a Recreation/Pedestrian Bridge linking river trails and recreation

amenities. This is a great site to connect communities in Ward 6 with communities in Ward 8 by providing performance/public

space, art displays, environmental education, or adventure recreation.

Solution: On the ground a multi-purpose deck connects with the bridge both by ramp and through the building. This building can be used for dining space, classes, and storage for rental bikes and boats. Exiting the building you are faced with an educational garden and an open lawn. Later comes a space for foodtrucks and a streetcar stop. After that you have a childrens play area and an amhpitheater that holds a large lighting tower to notify the community when an event is taking place.View of Multi-Use Building with Greenroof and Educational Garden

Economically, the area has gone downhill with suburbinization; walkability score is currently a 48 making it car dependent; there are many empty lots, currently the property of the DC Housing Authority. What is present is a Metro Station, Marvin Gaye Trail across East Capitol Street, a Senior Center .3 miles away, a Community Center, and a Recreation Center, all making the Heights become an ideal candidate for improving: walkability and safety, business, and creating an entertainment site for all ages.

The three neighborhoods in D.C. have lower household incomes than that of Maryland's two neighborhoods. The proposed Walmart will provide job opportunities to residents of the community.

corteS reSiDence Location: Cortes Island, British Columbia

Criteria: Select a residence and design a deck that fits the homes character. Team project responsible for producing construction documents and a scaled model of the deck with the use of a laser cutter.

Analysis: The residence selected was linear in form with only partial decking. It looked out onto Cortes Bay.

Solution: Extend the deck, with the exception of where the bedrooms sit (for privacy), adding special features: sauna, hot tub, outdoor kitchen, dining, sunbaithing, and stairs that wrap around to a fireplace.

Project: From January-March of 2013 hired as a Freelance Consultant in Vectorworks to create a library of +750 plant symbols,

light fixtures, outdoor furniture, kitchen appliances, and misc. objects that the company specifically uses on designs. The plant

symbols had a scheduled size and price associated with it that allowed for quickly generating a plant schedule. Numerous

worksheets were then created to calculate hardscape, landscape area (turf, mulch, loose stone, and perennial beds), and plant

costing with the option of separating cost by phase of development.

Example of several plant symbols (left images) and outdoor furniture (above)

created for company with 3d option. Different seating options and conversation

    layouts available.

As an Assistant for Richard Sweeney Landscape Architecture, I create plans in Vectorworks Landmark and SketchUp models

for more complex designs. Only the house is built in SketchUp and the planting design is placed on top of the model using

hand rendering techniques developed by Richard Sweeney.
