This June marks Landscape magazine’s 5th anniversary, and we take great pride in celebrating our 60th edition, which has come a long way since we first started in June 2007.

Today we distribute thousands of free copies to professionals in the UAE, KSA, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Jordan, and Egypt among others. Our website www.landscape-me.com has become the go to site for the regional landscape industry professionals and advertisers alike. All this could not have been achieved without the support and dedication from some of the world’s top landscaping firms who are operating out of the GCC, a signal of how far the industry have come in the past decade.

We have used this anniversary issue to revisit the work of one of the region’s top landscape architecture firm’s, Cracknell, whom we profiled back in 2007. Instead of reminiscing, we have taken this opportunity to look at how landscaping practices have evolved and progressed over the past few years in the face of environmental and indeed great economic challenges for us all.

The Middle East is a very different place now from when we started. We are so proud to have had worked with a team of regional and international contributors, writers, architects and professionals who helped succeed and make Landscape the one and only reference for landscape and urban planning in the Middle East. We hope to continue to grow and adapt to this ever-changing environment and as always welcome your feedback and contribution.

In its ongoing endeavour to promote urban planning strategies and best practices, Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC), today entered into a cooperation agreement

with Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), as the two entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to gain and share firsthand experience on internationally recognized urban planning strategies, methods and best practices. The MoU was announced at the 6th Abu Dhabi-Singapore Joint Forum (ADSJF) held under the co-chairmanship of H.E. Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Affairs Authority (EAA) and Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Singapore’s Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower. The agreement was signed by H.E Falah Mohammed Al Ahbabi, General Manager, Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) and Mr. Ng Lang, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).Highlighting the importance of the agreement, which is part of ongoing collaborations between the Abu Dhabi and Singapore governments, H.E. Falah Al Ahbabi said: “Knowledge and best practices exchanges are key to developing benchmark urban cities and complete communities sustainable for the next generation. The MoU signed today formally sets a framework to exchange information and experience between the UPC and URA and will give us

the opportunity to conduct in depth studies and researches on selected areas dedicated to urban development strategy”.Under the agreement, both entities will collaborate to create benchmark urban planning policies and initiatives that are closely integrated with land use, infrastructure and transportation solutions. The mutual working relationships will serve as the ideal platform to explore and identify opportunities and cooperation to exchange best practices. The assigned objective for both entities is to further enhance the multi-stakeholder, integrative and consultative approach already initiated and that integrates and promotes the economic, socio-cultural and environmental dimensions of sustainable urban development. Under the MoU and to maximize the knowledge transfer process, mutual staff exchange programs will be arranged. The agreement also covers organizing forums on urban planning and development that would pave the way for private sector companies in Singapore to participate in sharing and networking sessions with key stakeholders of the planning and development industry in Abu Dhabi as well as UPC’s active participation to the World Cities Summit that will take place in Singapore in July 2012.URA Chief Executive Officer Mr. Ng Lang said: “The MoU provides a framework for URA and UPC to exchange views and experiences in urban planning to enhance each other’s planning expertise. Dubai Safari that covers 60 hectares of the total area is aimed at establishing the best center for wildlife in the world, providing a variety of environments appropriate to different animals, attract visitors from different parts of the world and use modern interactive methods in control and movement to ensure the distinctive and unique experience for visitors. The stages of project include site preparation, preparing internal roads and infrastructure, gardening, landscaping and water bodies, transfer the existing zoo in Jumeirah to the new location and other facilities such as means of transport, restaurants, rest areas ... etc.)Eng. Mohammed Noor Mashroom, Director of General Projects Department explained the second project Dhow Wharfage Development at Deira Corniche, which is aimed to construct an additional integrated infrastructure to facilitate an increase in dhow trade through Dubai, which will make Dubai the economical center of import and export activities in the region.The project consists of the construction of a comprehensive wharfage of length 3 km, in between the Deira Corniche and Palm Deira, in front of Hayatt Regency Hotel. The wharfage will be divided into 30 loading/unloading areas, which will allow around 400 dhows of different sizes to berth at the same time.The project provides a loading/unloading area of 90,000 m2, which is more than half the loading/unloading area existing currently in Dubai Creek; and facilitates loading/unloading of cargo of more than 1.7 million tons per year.The wharfage has been designed with a depth of 7 meters below the low water level and with all

necessary anchorage elements; this will allow Dubai Creek to receive and anchor bigger dhows which couldn’t enter before. This project includes new quay structures and associated dredging and reclamation, including the supporting services and infrastructure such as entry and exit reporting wharves, administrative and control buildings, sailor’s facilities and re-fuelling wharf.All safety precautions have been followed according to international standards through providing an integrated fire fighting network as well as security services, police, rescue and civil defense facilities and berths. The project works include providing all major services including internal roads, water, electricity, telecommunication, and sewage networks. Also, a lighting network will be provided for the whole wharfage area which will facilitate cargo handling work during the evening hours.Construction of the project will require the excavation and dredging of 390,000 m3 of sand from the seabed adjacent to the wharf site, and this amount will be re-used for the reclamation works of the wharfage. According to the project plan, construction works will commence at the beginning of June 2012, with the completion and operation of Phase 1 (60% of the wharf) after 12 months, and the second phase will be completed by end of year 2013.Eng. Ibrahim Mohammed Ibrahim Ali Juma , Head of Coastal Engineering Unit explained the project of Completion of Business Bay Canal and its Connection to the Sea. Ibrahim said that the aim of this project is to revive Business Bay Canal as a part of an integrated marine system which will improve the environmental state of the canal, as well as the upper part of the creek. Also, this project will enhance the economical state of the area adjacent to canal by transformation into an attractive business waterfront. It will also provide a chance to use the Business Bay Canal for navigation. It will create a unique water body suitable for leisure navigation purposesA complete hydrodynamic study has been done by Dubai Municipality to ensure proper water circulation in both Business Bay Canal and the inner part of Dubai Creek, as well as, the efficiency of the near future inclusion of Meydan canal in the overall system.The project consists of two phases: Bay Canal with sea through a pipeline system connecting the sea to the side of canal adjacent to Sheikh Zayed Road.The pipeline system of an overall length of about 3 km will be realized by adopting “Micro-Tunneling” technique, which will allow the pumping process to proceed without impacting any existing utilities or services as well as not requiring any diversions to be done to roads or services lines.

Also, the water intake will be done using the “Pipeline Intake” technique, which does not require the construction of any breakwaters, thus preventing any harm to the coastal and marine environment.Phase 2: Completion of the canal waterway through connecting the existing lagoons.

This phase consists of carrying out the dredging works for the remaining parts of the canal, estimated by an amount of 750,000 m3. In addition, the canal quay wall of a length of 1.2 km will be completed.The duration of design works will be 7 months and the implementation works will be 18 months.

RTA awards two contracts for constructing internal roads at Al-Qusais, Al-Qouz

The Board of Directors of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has recently endorsed in a meeting chaired by H.E. Mattar Al Tayer,

Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, the awarding of two contracts for constructing internal roads at Al-Qusais 3, and Al-Qouz-4 at a cost of AED38 million dirham. The move comes in the context of RTA efforts to improve roads network to accommodate the growing needs of the demographic & urban expansion seen by the Emirate under RTA’s vision of providing Safe & Smooth Transport for All.“The two projects represent the initial phase of the 5-Year Plan 2012-2016 endorsed by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for paving internal roads at several residential districts in Dubai Emirate at a cost of about one billion dirham. The initial phase of the Plan covers five residential communities namely: Hatta and Al Qusais 3 in addition to Al Qouz 2, 3 and 4,” said Al Tayer.“The Internal Roads Project at Al Qusais

3, which covers an area of 225 hectares, encompasses the construction of roads extending 6 km along with street lighting works and the construction of parking slots for some mosques and public schools in the area. Al Qusais 3 has a vibrant demographic activity with urbanization rate exceeding 60 per cent in the area. Construction works in the Project, which costs about AED23 million, is set to start in June this year and takes about 9 months to complete.“The Project of Constructing Internal Roads at Al Qouz 4 comprises the construction of roads extending 8 km, and lighting & parking works along with storm-water drainage services, at a cost of 15 million dirham. Construction works are set to start this week and the project is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2013.“Early this month, the RTA awarded a contract for constructing internal roads at Al Warqaa 1, 2, 3 and 4 at a cost of about AED156.631 million. The Project includes construction and lighting works of roads stretching 125 km; comprising the construction of 89 km-long roads, and improvements on existing roads extending 36 km. It also includes the construction of roadside parking slots, parking works for some mosques and public schools in the area, and all necessary road works such as road marking, and traffic signals,” elaborated Al Tayer.

It is worth-mentioning that the 5-Year Plan (2012–2016) for Constructing Internal Roads at Residential Districts in Dubai Emirate, which has been endorsed by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, covers the construction of internal roads in about 16 areas where urbanization rates range from 20 to 80 per cent, though drop in some areas to as low as 5 per cent. Phase I of the Project, the cost of which is about AED150 million, covers five residential communities namely: Hatta and Al Qusais 3 in addition to Al Qouze 2, 3 and 4. Phase II, which will start in 2013 at a cost of about 140 million dirham, covers three residential districts namely; Muhaisna 2, and Al Barsha South 1 and 2. Phase III, which starts in 2014 at a cost of about 130 million dirham, covers Al Mamzar, Al Nahdah 1, and Oud Mateena 2. Phase IV, which starts in 2015 and costs about 140 million dirham, covers the construction of roads in 3 districts: Nad El Sheba 4, Oud Mateena 1, and Khawaneej 2. Phase V, which starts in 2016 at a cost of 250 million dirham, covers road works in Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1, Al Qusais Industrial Areas 3, 4 & 5, and Al Awir 1.

Cracknell have responded to the challenge of the changing world economic situation

Do you have a diverse mixture of cultures within Cracknell? And if so, does this reflect in any way your designs, attitude to environmental issues? Cracknell have 115 staff located in our offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat and London, including 30 landscape architects, horticulturists, graphic artists, irrigation engineers, lighting designers, technical and admin personnel.

Our strength as a successful design practice lies in the quality, expertise and dedication of our professional personnel. We have a truly international mix of staff, allowing us to draw upon the best design practices from diverse cultures around the world, and to provide high quality design in many regions or environments.

How has Cracknell adapted to the changing socio-economic conditions in the region?Cracknell have responded to the challenge of the changing world economic situation by expanding our design operations and seeking new opportunities for business beyond this region. This creates new challenges for our designers and technical teams as we learn to adapt our designs to new climates, cultures and environments.

For us this is a fascinating and rewarding process, allowing us to develop designs that respond to regional cultures and requirements. Our designers will go to great lengths to find out what are the important local influences to ensure that our designs are not only appropriate to their cultural context, but also resonate with the local character.

One the most rewarding aspects of our work is to see a finished project being well used and enjoyed by the end users. We recently held our company sports day at Zabeel Park in Dubai, a project we completed about five years ago. It was amazing and very satisfying to see place full of families and groups using the park.

Since the beginning of operations in the UAE, what has been Cracknell’s greatest achievement to date? It is difficult to pin down our greatest achievement as a single project or a single event over 20 years of operations in UAE.

We are very proud of our involvement in some of the most iconic projects in the region such as the districts around the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, Internet City, Festival City, the Walk at JBR, Dubai Financial City, Jumeira Beach Hotel, Zabeel Park, the Palm Dubai and Dubai Marina. It’s a great pleasure to see our work and the spaces we have created being well used and enjoyed by so many people.

We are also proud of our involvement in some of the less visible projects where our role is to create great communities with practical and responsible design, and to see residents enjoying their living environment.

How do you maintain the pace of growth within your company?The main concern with growth is to ensure that quality isn’t sacrificed. The UAE grew at a huge pace over 10 years, during which our office expanded from a team of 4 to 230 staff. Our strategy was to adapt the team structure to ensure that projects were well supported and well managed, and to take on board new technologies.


Interview

With fewer opportunities in the UAE, Cracknell are now focusing on growth in other regions and in emerging markets including Asia and further afield. This is an exciting phase for us and is presenting us with tremendous new opportunities.

Which projects are you currently undertaking? We are working on a number of large public realm projects in Abu Dhabi that are very exciting and will ultimately provide some of the City’s most dynamic public spaces. In Saudi Arabia we have recently completed the first two phases of a multi-phase residential community that has been awarded the BEST RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY IN SAUDI ARABIA 2012. We are also working on the urban regeneration of the Jeddah Corniche and the adjacent streetscapes to create a wonderful destination park for the people of the Jeddah.

In Asia we have 10 hospitality projects on the drawing boards and several large residential townships and mixed-use developments that are keeping us very busy.

What is very exciting is that there has been a resurgence in tourist related projects in Dubai. We have recently completed the new Meydan Beach Club located on the Walk at JBR and are working on another large tourism project in Dubai that will be a great new international destination for the region.

How is it possible to balance beauty, nature, and functionality in designs to respect the needs of both people and the environment?This is a valid question these days and is something that Cracknell have been very focused on. As responsible designers we need to ensure our projects not only provide well designed functional spaces, but also achieve this with minimal impact on scarce resources. Sustainable design is at the heart of our process, and is something that in our view has ultimately improved the design product. For example by using local materials and local plant species our designs fit within their context and express the character of the region, telling the story of the place.



InterviewCracknell have also been working hard to address technologies that improve water management for irrigation systems and are constantly reviewing new technologies for ways to improve efficiencies. We have worked with Government bodies to provide our expertise on the water demand for plant species and to develop the lists of indigenous and drought tolerant plants that have become the primary palette for landscape architects throughout the region.

Landscape architects are naturally very conscious of our environment, so for us addressing sustainability is a positive process that ultimately leads to better design.

How can landscape architects do more to consider the human element and the local culture when developing projects in our region?From an individual landscape architects standpoint, make sure you travel around the region with your eyes wide open and your sketchbook or camera in your hand. The best and only way to really learn about the diverse cultures in the region is to get out there and see it first hand.

Travel allows us to evaluate and experience existing successful landscapes and spaces, to see how they have developed over time and to see how people use spaces in different countries and climates.

What specific guidelines or best practices do Cracknell as a company adhere to? The application of Estidama as a guideline for sustainable landscape design has been one of the most successful and effective strategies implemented in this region. We have adapted

our specifications, water demand strategies, plant lists and material selections to support Estidama as much as possible. This just makes good sense to us.

Many of our staff are LEED Accredited Professionals and this also guides our processes. However, Estidama is more specifically adapted to the regional requirements and is a more practical and appropriate guide to good design practice.

The principles set out by Estidama can be applied to any regional location where consideration of resources in hot climates is a driving factor. However, in addition to the design process, Cracknell have developed detailed specifications that set high standards for project implementation and which ensure that our design work has a sound basis of constructability. Our specifications follow British Standards and International standards to ensure that the best practices are followed.


What are your concerns and projections for the landscaping industry in the region in general? We are very optimistic about the region and are seeing a growth in larger scale private and public realm projects that is very encouraging. It has been an interesting time for everyone over the past 4 years with a massive shift in the type and scale of projects in the region. However, it feels as if there has been a period of consolidation that this is beginning to bear fruit and will lead to well considered projects.

Over the past 20 years we have seen a real shift in the perception of Landscape architecture and recognition of the added value it can bring to a project and the urban environment. As a result Landscape architects have started taking a more leading role and have been engaged at an earlier stage in the design process. However, we frequently find that we are brought on board too late during a project’s design cycle with the result being that landscape opportunities can be missed. We would hope to encourage all Clients to consider landscape as a leading process rather than a secondary process as we believe we can add a great deal of value to the end product.

In your opinion, have any of the UAE’s landscape designs influenced the wider landscaping industry in other parts of the world?I think the primary effect is that the UAE has set a benchmark for what can be achieved and how a city can be transformed. Landscape has had big part to play in this transformation, not only in the private realm spaces, but also in the treatment of the public realm and streetscapes.

But following the period of massive growth, I think the most interesting effect is the new direction this country is now taking towards more

sustainable landscapes. We are now seeing a much more considered approach to development and a more responsible approach to how we treat our environment, and we believe this is now setting a new benchmark for the others to follow.

It has been interesting to see how well the inspiration of the desert and the regional culture has been translated into the urban context in imaginative and contemporary ways. This has had a great influence on the way that public realm spaces are treated and has set the tone for expressing the context and character of the region.

Good examples from our portfolio that were influenced by the local context include the dune forms at the Dubai Convention center, contemporary arabesque patterning at the Burj Khalifa Boulevard and the wadi style landscapes at Festival City streetscapes and public realm.

What are the processes by which Cracknell evaluates the contractors and its landscape maintenance contracts? We have a live database of contractors in which contractors are continuously graded against their ability to supply and install their specific products. This allows us to continuously evaluate the contractors and to work with them to keep them appraised of where there is a gap in standards. This also feeds into our initial prequalification process and ensures that our tenders only go out to the best contractors. The term Estidama, which means “sustainability” in Arabic, is the name given to the standard by which the UPC measures new development plans submitted to the UPC.

Estidama has established the Pearl Rating System (PRS). The minimum mandatory requirement is that all villas, building and communities attain a “1 Pearl” rating or “2 Pearl” for government buildings.

The UPC requires that all design and construction teams have a Pearl Qualified Professional (PQP) on the team. The PQP is a critical member of the design team. It is their responsibility to ensure all minimum Pearl 1 requirements are met for the design and construction submissions to the UPC. The PQP also is the liaison between the project team and the UPC and/or Municipality. The PQP on the design and construction team must have the qualified rating for the villa, building or community plan being submitted.

The Bolgogno Golf course master plan combines a swimming pool connected to the lake and a spa in the ancient furnace, which overlooks the water via a glazed terrace to panoramic views over the landscape. While a large canal serves as a reinforcement to the spa and the surrounding residences within their natural setting.


The Bolgogno Golf course was designed in 1997 by Robert von Hagge. It’s readily accessible by car and is an hour’s drive from Milan and a twenty-minute drive from Malpensa airport. The location is within easy reach of other natural

attractions including Ticino Park, the Lake of Orta and Lake Maggiore. Bolgogno Golf has two 18-hole par 72 courses that extend to the hills overlooking the peaks of the Monte Rosa.


Golf Course

The “Del Conte” course is spread over a low-lying terrain dotted with expansive lakes and wilderness. The “Bonora” course extends over a wide hilly area also surrounded by wilderness with streams and forests that are typical of the Ticino Park. The salient architectural feature is the Club House, a building set in the countryside that was recently renovated by Roberta DStudio Droulers. This provides all-season accommodation and offers spectacular views of the surroundings.



Golf Course

The design project undertaking was a sensitive one, in light of the extensive natural features, the woods and streams making it one of the most attractive courses in Europe. However, it took significant skill to create artificial ponds, which are linked to the swimming pools and the spa facilities. All of which are in close proximity to the guest quarters, with the bio-pond running through the creeks, creating a landscape full of views, trails and bridges within the golf courses and adjacent private properties.

Green lawn areas surround the bio pond and act as a relaxation

spot for visitors, while the banks are covered with vegetation and aquatic plants, as well as a stoned area for walking. A small church dating to the eighteenth century stands close to the lake, providing a tranquil space for meditation. Also immersed within this natural setting is the Bonora House, serving as an ideal place to experience nature and recreational sports.

Golf Course

The green areas of the courtyard and its geometric configuration are enriched further by the intricate pattern of grass that runs through the area.

All interventions have a low environmental impact - the project concentrated on the creation of the tree-lined driveways leading to the entrance, the exterior facades of the new hotel and the guest quarters and the masterplan of the Green, which has a swimming pool set on different levels, a lake that is divided between the golf courses and the natural landscape and surrounding private

properties. The “guest quarters” is also environmentally friendly using only glazing with Class A certification. The building is primarily constructed of wood and glass with a dry construction technique, which permits considerable savings in water consumption.

In front of this building is the entrance plaza that acts as a buffer zone between the parking, the apartment complex and the golf course. The square is conceived with the spirit of green architecture, as one can stand on sloping benches made from logs that are comprised of trees in planters made


of corten steel. The flooring, which is defined by drawing joints to the ground, exposes smoothened concrete. An old furnace within the existing landscape becomes the focus of a future intervention and subdivision of the area near the golf courses.

With the strong presence of the architecture covering almost the entire area of the lot, which measures 47 x 20 meters, this garden proposal conquers the vacant areas adapting

to the existing situation and, in the end, becoming as important as the architecture. Projected as a particularly modern building located in a quite traditional residential neighborhood in the outskirts of Buenos Aires City, the glass oval-shaped building houses the offices of a local firm; the landscape project, conditioned by important size and planning restrictions, rises to the challenge set by the architecture.

The location of these offices in this residential area of Buenos Aires responds to the need and preference of a quiet and green environment, perfectly achieved in this neighborhood situated to the north of the city. However, the traditional presence of private residences, especially the ones on each side of the lot, meant the garden project was subject to specific conditions. Therefore, not only the size but the privacy issues had to be resolved.

As part of the architectural project, the two-story oval building is completely surrounded by water. The oval shape is positioned, in perfect symmetry, within a rectangular shallow pool as though emerging from the water; this means, on the one hand, more size restrictions for the garden and, on the other, the reflections of the

landscape on the water´s surface, thus creating a virtual enlargement of the green component. The owners, for their part, asked for a tropical looking landscape composition, something that was possible to achieve because of the special microclimate that is created within the lot; framed by the large trees planted on the adjacent parcels, the site is mostly in shadow and lacking of the typical morning frost which occurs in the open, in this district.

This whole situation was the starting point for the project produced by Estudio Ines Stewart- Cecilia Murray, an office specializing in residential

projects. Known mainly for their experience, knowledge and management of the local plant repertoire and the design for large estancias and private developments, these two landscape architects also bring their expertise to these kinds of very compact projects.

Firstly, they decided to make the party walls taller, by adding a fence which over time and with the natural growth of climbing plants and shrubs will become a green screen. On the right side of the main access, framing a descending ramp to the underground parking area, another tall white wall which created unhappy sun reflections and appeared as a bare vertical surface, was also screened by a naturally composed covering; planted with Brush

cherry (Eugenia mirtiflora), this green element hides the car access and helps to create a more welcoming image.

The architectural project was presented with a central wooden path that runs along the full extent of the longest side of the lot, dividing the front and back gardens into two equal parts and crossing over the water surface to create an access low bridge which connects to the interior of the building. The landscape plan proposes to virtually reconstruct this axis inside the main hall with a linear planter. Planted with a dense base of Peace lilly (Spathiphyllum), an elegant indoor plant, and Guadua Angustifolia (Columbian thorny bamboo) as a tall and ethereal screen, this element recreates the central mark and offers a refreshing presence inside that also reaches the upper level. In order to assure a correct function of this planting structure the designers planned a special drainage system and used specific geotextile products.

The garden is basically formed by a front and a back space and the two narrow linear strips that were left at both sides of the lot, thus framing the architecture and making some kind of a green wrapping box.

Both the front and back gardens present an organic layout, a series of curves and natural lines that define the groups of plants. In the front, yellow Day lillie (Hemerocallis) and white African lillie (Agapanthus) form dense volumes and are framed by a number of Sago palms (Cycas revolute) which offer a traditional tropical taste. When walking into the site, the image of the glass house and the luxuriant green composition of this front garden means a first warm and interesting combination; additionally, planted at both sides of this

the right side is a little wider, the layout allows creating a more flexible planting plan and adds colorful flower species: blue Plumbagos, Fuchsias, Red Ginger (Alpinia purpurata) and Calla lillie (Zantedeschias) mix up to produce a homogeneous but lively border. Punctuating this linear space three Silver maples repeat the ones in the front and provide larger volumes.

In the back garden, the same central wooden path that appears in the front reaches an outdoor living-room, or semi-roofed meeting area, which opens onto the green expansion. At one of the sides of this construction the project presents a small hot-tub which is framed with some existing China roses (Hibiscus sinensis), Cycas and ferns. The landscape plan only reconstructs these existing groups, preserving the plants onsite and completes the planting design with more ferns and shadow-loving plants. Framing the central wooden path, a tidy group of Phormium rubra adds reddish hues to the garden and, at both sides, the incorporation of three large Yatay palms (Butia yatay) offers a stronger presence.

All these plants combinations and compositions were planned to be appreciated from the inside of the glass building, both from the lower level, where extend the lobby and other public spaces, and from the upper level, occupied by the private offices and the meeting rooms. The main office, located at the back of the building, faces the outdoor construction; for this reason, the landscape plan includes an intimate design for this small roof, thus creating another point of visual interest made up of a wooden planter with grasses and a horizontal plane covered in white crushed stone.

The spaces of the garden that are not fully planted appear as neat green carpets and provide a fine balance in the garden. The lighting plan seeks to highlight some of the large trees that crown the landscape and, at the floor level, some of the varied shapes of the lower planes of plants.

What makes this project all the more remarkable is the ability of the landscape project of becoming as strong as the existing architecture, quite unique for a traditional neighborhood, especially in a very fragmented lot that ends up providing small garden areas. The design explores all the possibilities and comes up with a compact green composition that reads and feels as a stunning single space.

The two remaining strips of land that are developed along the opposite sides of the lot become linear shadow gardens. On the left side, which is somehow narrower, the walls were completely covered in green with climbing species such as Creeping fig (Ficus repens) and the incorporation of bamboo that reach a height of 5 meters. Dynamic groups of different kinds of ferns provide a large range of green hues and the rhododendrons are used to add some color to the composition. Because
