2014 was the year that the UAE was awarded one of the most iconic projects in his 40 year history— Expo 2020. As the year draws to a close, we look how its neighbours Qatar and Saudi Arabia are leaving

their mark, both in the public realm space and industrial city projects to become leading tourist destinations and more sustainable places to live and work. (See page 20 role of public realm and page 34)

In Asia, sustainable living has been at the forefront of landscape planning for many years, the Taikoo Hui green roof building and places in Guangzhou, China is a shining example of a public realm mixed use project that doubles as a commercial hub in the middle of the city. (page 26)

Gardens by the Bay architects, Grant Associates have recently expanded their offices in Singapore and are busy revamping the historic surroundings of the Capitol Building in the downtown civic district. (page 38)

The MENA region is busier than ever, and we at Landscape are looking forward to a prosperous and peaceful year ahead.

DAMAC Towers by PArAMounT reAChes for The sTArs

The iconic US$1 billion DAMAC Towers by Paramount resort in the Burj Area of Dubai has already

passed the 16th floor of construction on each of its four towers, according to developer, DAMAC Properties.

The luxury project includes more than 1,800 units comprising approximately 1,000 one-, two- and three-bedroom serviced suites and an 800-key, 5-star Paramount Hotel. Each will reflect the style and ambience of the movies produced by Paramount Pictures over the past century.

DAMAC Towers by Paramount is currently one of the single largest projects under construction in Dubai. The total number of floors in the development will exceed the total number within the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, when it is completed in 2016. Each tower will stretch more than 250 metres into the air, with 10 podium levels and 58 additional storeys.

The core walls on each of the four towers have now reached the 16th level, with the slabs already passing the 13th floor of the project.

“Developing such a huge project, with four towers all being constructed simultaneously, has brought some challenges, but we are delighted with the way the project has grown in the past year,” said Niall McLoughlin, Senior Vice President, DAMAC Properties. “DAMAC Towers by Paramount is already an iconic development coming up in the Burj Area and we look forward to opening the first ever Paramount Hotel & Resort anywhere in the world.”

The project includes a multi-level plaza, offering a selection of 11 themed food & beverage concepts, unique meeting & events facilities, a private screening room, wellness & fitness centres, swimming pools, kids club, retail, and merchandise.

Such has been the response to the project; DAMAC Properties recently

announced it is to build another Paramount Hotels & Resorts project in Dubai. Paramount Hotel Dubai, Downtown will include 1,250 rooms & suites, making it one of the biggest hotels in the emirate. The development will support Dubai’s tourism growth in the lead up to the World Expo in 2020.

DAMAC Properties is also building the 276-key, Paramount Hotel, Jumeirah Waterfront, DAMAC Villas by Paramount within the AKOYA by DAMAC master development and DAMAC Tower by Paramount in Riyadh, KSA.

“We see these unique branded developments with Paramount Hotels & Resorts as a key tranche of our business moving forward,” added McLoughlin. “The hospitality sector needs to grow three-fold in the coming six years, just to keep up with the number of tourists set for Dubai and we believe that the DAMAC Towers by Paramount developments will prove a huge draw to international visitors.”

The competition required to develop a concept for the museum of natural science at Berlin. For such type of building we felt the

“natural shape” as the best choice.

The wish to design a building reproducing the shape of some natural elements such as some kind of minerals, it had to meet with current construction techniques.

After careful research on new technologies, our attention was captured by a 3D printer of free forms of any size: d-shape (not scale models but elements in 1: 1 by an inorganic perfectly environmentally friendly component that turns sand in solid rock). “What could not be done, can be done now”.

Starting then two inputs: play some natural conformation and the use of technology, we designed our museum.

Recycling green waste to compost for urban landscapes

Dr. Shagufta GillPostDoc – Solid Waste Management

The addition of landscapes within the expanding urban sector is pre-requisite for the sustainability of urban planning and development projects. The

urban landscapes provide aesthetic and eye catching views, platform for healthy exercises, conserve biodiversity, sequester carbon and mitigate the climate change impact. It is therefore essential to create healthy landscapes which are sustainable, environment friendly and easy to maintain. To assure such features, the planning is to be made from landscape site preparation, to development and implementation phases. In the site preparation phase, it is important to use soil material without pollutants and with a mix of organic material, as the soil material commonly used in landscaping projects are sandy. The sandy material is low in organic matter and inherent soil

fertility (clay material) and thus have low water and nutrient holding capacity leading to heavy drainage and groundwater pollution. The use of the compost material is one of the options to improve the quality of the landscape base material.

Currently concerns are growing regarding the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, atmospheric pollution, soil health, biodiversity which has increased global interest in organic recycling practices. In these perspectives, composting is an attractive proposition for turning on-farm and landscape organic matter, mowed grass, pruned shrubs and trees into a farm and/or landscape resource.

Solid waste generated in the GCC region is around 120 million tonnes per year. In the UAE waste management is a priority leading to establish a world class sustainable

Healthy landscapes are pre-requisite for the sustainability of new urban development projects

waste management system to divert waste away from landfill disposal and maximize resource recovery for ultimate target of zero landfill. This way the waste material is recycled for beneficial uses and environmental protection. The ultimate objective of composting is to reduce

waste material for land filling (dumping waste material), conserving biodiversity, improve soil quality for agriculture and landscaping activities, and protect the environment through increasing carbon sequestration and reducing groundwater pollution.

14 i www.landscape-me.com i december 2014

Compost addition to landscape sites improves soil quality, reduce

landfilling, conserve biodiversity and protects the environment.

Composting with microbial inoculants is the ideal way to produce high quality compost in a short span. The microbial inoculants facilitate the rapid and efficient conversion of raw green waste materials during composting process. The high quality compost is enriched with nutrients which improves soil health and subsequently enhances the growth and yield of crops. Environmental protection is additional positive benefit of microbial inoculants compost because stable compost produced after microbial inoculation reduces NH4 volatilization and nitrate (NO3) leaching to ground water and protects the environment.

The enhancement of organic matter content in sandy soil through amendment with fresh or composted lingocellulosics will lead to provide

better niche for vegetation development and agriculture production. While fresh organic matter may be hard to provide nutrient, in this regards the addition of composts alone or mixing with fresh organic matter in suitable ratio may be appropriate options. Not only the composts, but their components like humic acid and fulvic acid can have important bearing on improving plant growth at different developmental stages including seed germination and seedling vigor.

Landscape wastes can be transformed to beneficial resource for

landscaping sites

At a preparatory stage of landscape project, a landscape architecture prepares a site map showing different site features, walkways, irrigation systems, plots for plants diversity (grasses, shrubs, ground cover, trees etc) to create an aesthetic look to attract visitors interest and to some extent to educate the visitors. At the

implementation stage, the landscape site is prepared to level and undulating as the site map is approved. For efficient use of irrigation water it is recommended to level the landscaping site preferably using the laser guided land leveler or other suitable equipment. Once the leveling is accomplished and irrigation infrastructure is installed, the next stage is to prepare the land for various plants types and other features. In order to prepare plants beds, the compost is commonly mixed with soil to improve soil quality. Usually 3-5 kg per m2 or variable quantities (based on soil type and plants) of compost is mixed manually or mechanically.

Considering the beneficial uses of compost for landscaping sites and agricultural farms, ICBA has initiated its production at the experimental station (see composting cycle) using the feedstock derived from plants clippings (grass, shrubs, ground cover and trees etc). To enhance composting process the raw material is

inoculated with a consortium of microbes (fungi, actinomycetes, mycorrhiza, trichoderma and bacteria) leading to form stable and mature compost consisting of organic matter (38.2%), C/N 36:1, P (0.27%), K (0.75%0, pH (7.7) and moisture (< 10%). The compost not only improves soil’s physical health (structure development) but also provides primary nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) essential for plant growth.

Dubai based ICBA has taken the initiative to convert green wastes to beneficial product “compost”.

sports STRIVING FOR WORLD CLASS SPORT FACILITIES

Ranjeet Singh, Sales Manager for TigerTurf in the Middle East discusses the important considerations for those looking to invest in new sports surfaces:

Football is becoming increasingly popular in the region and the facilities that are available need to reflect this. In the Middle East in particular, there is growing

demand for sports spaces that are dedicated to football, so investing in land to create an area for the sport can be a lucrative business opportunity.

“Alongside this, there is a growing demand internationally for consistency in playing conditions and this is one of the main strengths of synthetic turf. When developing new sports surfaces in the region, it’s useful to take inspiration from other areas of the world such as the UK, where there has been a large increase in elite level sports clubs installing 3G surfaces.

“Take a look at the direction Kuwaiti national, Fawaz Mubarak Al-Hasawi, Chairman of Championship club Nottingham Forest is taking his club by investing in additional 3G training facilities. The following case study shows how the club is providing strong facilities for younger players who will go on to become the region’s top players.”

17 i www.landscape-me.com i december 2014

At the request of the academy coaching staff, the surface was manufactured with markings giving it the versatility to be divided from an FA regulation 11-a-side pitch into four smaller pitches to be used by younger academy age groups. With the academy hosting many talented youngsters aged 8 – 19 from across the club’s representative teams every week, an adaptable 3G area was essential.

Boasting FIFA 1 and 2 star accreditation, TigerTurf’s Soccer Real 60XQ is the result of breakthrough polymer processing that

Forest academy scores with second 3g surfaceWith Nottingham Forest looking to regain Premier League status after a 15 year absence within the second tier of English football, as well as striving for Category One status for its Academy, maintaining the best training facilities for its first team through to youngsters as young as eight is a top priority.

Faced with the challenge of attracting and developing the Midlands’ most talented young footballers, the club’s management took the decision to install a new state-of-the-art outdoor 3G playing surface at its Nigel Doughty Academy. The ultimate objective was not only to achieve playing consistency for every one of the club’s youngsters, but also to secure Category One academy status under the FA’s Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP).

Elite level surfaceHaving already invested in an indoor synthetic training pitch last year, the club contacted TigerTurf; a leading manufacturer of synthetic sports surfaces, who manufactured and supplied a 7,094m² surface, which was installed by independent sports surfacing specialist, Smith Construction.

18 i www.landscape-me.com i december 2014

“From a coaching perspective, we couldn’t be happier with the new surface as it allows us to do the technical work that we need to do with the youngsters at the club – and do it with quality. The reception from the players has been equally positive as the new pitches create conditions very, very close to those of natural grass. The ball holds up better than on other synthetic pitches we’ve seen which gives a truer playing environment.

“As we aim to achieve Category One status for our academy as soon as possible, it is essential that we offer a top-class facility with top-class surfaces. The new artificial training pitch is second to none and perfectly enhances our grass pitches and indoor surface, giving us everything we need to meet Category One criteria, which is the ultimate aim for us irrespective of the division our first team is playing in.

“The new 3G area is great as it gives us a full-sized 11-a-side pitch which can be broken down into a 9 v 9 pitch and two 7 v 7 pitches, depending on what we need at any given time. This works extremely well for both competitive fixtures and training. I don’t think we’d do anything different even if we were asked to do it all again.”

Ewan Hunter, the club’s Head Groundsman added: “As well as being able to handle the demands of every team that trains at our academy, it was also important for us to have a pitch that would be simple to maintain. By running a charterhouse groomer and brush across the surface in a couple of different directions once a week, we can ensure the rubber infill on the surface is always evenly distributed.

“The 3G surface is simple to maintain and by working closely with the coaching staff to monitor how much each pitch is used and in which areas, we can adjust our maintenance schedule accordingly.”

eradicates weak points that may occur in the yarns as a result of the shape, therefore producing unrivalled split resistance. This results in a surface, which is durable enough to offer long-term elite level performance without compromising the aesthetics. The third generation synthetic turf system is 60mm in length and comprises two unique profiled fibres; part-filled with rubber and sand to enhance ball roll.

To enhance the overall standard of the playing area, the football club also invested in the installation of recessed goal areas to ensure that those goalposts not being used can be moved away from the pitch to avoid any safety risks. With goalposts constantly being moved to accommodate academy squads of different ages, this was deemed essential by the coaching staff.

Positive reactionGary Brazil, Academy Manager at Nottingham Forest Football Club, commented: “When the club took the decision to invest in a new 3G surface at its academy, the Chairman’s view was that the quality of the playing surface had to come first, which is certainly reflected in the quality of its performance to date.

Role of Public Parks Department in developing public realm and landscaping concepts in Qatar

Since an important part of this is Landscaping, there are several practical steps the Public Parks Dept. at the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning endeavours to follow to enhance the landscaping movement and the public realm in Qatar.

Historically, this major department was established under the name of Beautification Engineering Dept. (BED) before 2004 and was handling the landscaping projects on a much smaller scale.

In 2005, the government of Qatar established the Public Work Authority (Ashghal) as an independent authority to provide consultancy services to improve infrastructure in Qatar and since the landscaping is a pivotal part of it, the BED became known as the TBMD

By: Majeed AliPublic Gardens DepartmentDoha, Qatar

21 i www.landscape-me.com i december 2014

(Town Beautification and Maintenance Department) under the Building Affairs of Ashghal.

From 2005 till 2009 the department designed and implemented many aesthetical projects including public parks, landscaping of roads and open spaces along with the creation of the Practical Mandatory Guidelines for all landscaping projects in Qatar (Qatar Construction Specifications – Section 28) which specifics the soft landscaping, irrigation systems and play equipment in the public parks, moreover, it was responsible for the design and implementation of many projects and as a consultant authority, the department offers direct technical support for all other government bodies in the landscaping field in the country.

The innovative projects, achievements and successes gained within the period the department was under PWA and the expansion in construction and infrastructure projects in addition to the increase of awareness about the importance of landscaping as a forward way of thinking and the need for a specific department to manage these issues were the major reasons for the leadership of Qatar to make this department as a separate administration under the Ministry of Municipality & Urban Planning under the name of Public Parks Department (PPD) with wider

responsibilities to play this important role and to upgrade the landscaping concepts and public realm in all of Qatar.

This department includes three major sections comprising, design and studies, project and nurseries. It was initially started to handle government landscaping work projects in Qatar, however the output of the PPD since then is represented by more than 40 public parks since 2009 till now and currently there are more than this number of projects at the design stage to be sent to tender during the next couple of years.

PPD has also given thoughtful consideration for roads landscaping since it was responsible for this in Qatar from 2005 till present, and with Public Work Authority’s Mega project of General engineering and consultancy services project to develop and upgrade the infrastructure for the whole roads in Qatar and to establish new roads as part of the preparations for the coming events in Qatar, PPD has handled the landscaping part and arranged for several practical steps to manage these projects after setting the major parameters of QCS

22 i www.landscape-me.com i december 2014

(Qatar Construction specifications ) and QSAS (Qatar Sustainability and assessment systems) and also set the maintenance issues as one of the major goals, with the advance setting of parameters from the beginning to create a maintainable designs for these roads and improve the public realm in Qatar.

These projects can be summarized as follows: Specifies the available lots of TSE (Treated sewerage effluent water) use to irrigate roads projects and arrange for the soft landscaping design to be below the available water capacity, this action is to avoid any problems that might occur due to the drop in TSE during the summer season, this step is done in conjunction with the drainage department of PWA.

Designs depended mostly on the visible soft landscaping elements just like trees and big shrubs along with classifying each

area according to various parameters just like urban areas where PPD has proposed naturalized trees, mostly flowering trees to create a pleasant landscaping with a sense of welcome and the semi urban areas where the plant palette consisted of a mixture of naturalized and native trees in a balanced combination to manage the requirements of these roads and to meet the targeted policy of sustainability applied in Qatar, while in rural areas similar to Salwa express road between Qatar & Saudia Arabia, PPD choose not to mix these types of trees and

instead depended on the native trees due to their ability to thrive in the hard conditions.

Minimizing the usage of grass and ground cover areas to control water consumption without neglecting it 100 %, these types of plants specified to be only in nodes and focal point areas.

Proposing new techniques of the usage of hard landscaping elements in terms of the used material, size of pavement, types of street furniture and the mulched areas either by stone mulch or wooden mulch with different sizes and colors to create the difference.

As well as depending on trees and big shrubs, PPD used several landscaping styles just like Xeriscaping in some roads while followers can easily distinguish new techniques used in some of these projects like creating a lovely bio- swales along the roads and it’s easy to notice that PPD staff worked hard to satisfy design approaches in terms of the used plants and the plants hierarchy within these roads.

Designing a solid centralized irrigation system which contains the latest technologies including central units, to simplify maintenance procedures— all of the steps within this system are computerized and PPD staff get full data on a daily basis on watering operations such as the flow rate, friction loss, humidity ratio and to assess the exact irrigation program to exactly fulfill the plants needs of water.

In parallel with the previous step, PPD arranged for the experimental design and field trial to experiment new daily irrigation rates for the approved plant’s palette of Qatar, this ongoing, systematic and scientific field trial was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of using different rates of daily watering applications against control treatments and will last for one year to get the new proper irrigation rates to be applied to the system prior to the actual initiation of these projects.

With all the above arrangements, PPD, has set out the required policy to accomplish

these projects safely and successfully, meanwhile, the Department of Public Parks has also decided to intervene in solving any expected procurements challenges or obstacles of soft landscaping materials, especially for the native plants of Qatar which is not available in commercial quantities at the international sources of plants, in view of this, an upgrading plan to develop the existing nurseries has been launched immediately with an ambitious plan to establish one of the biggest nurseries in the Middle East.

It’s planned that the 50-hectare automotive nursery will have a mother plant stock area and will be completed within the coming year. It will contain green houses, shaded areas and function like a logistics operations hub with internal roads, administrational buildings, laboratory, show room and labor’s accommodation, as per the plan, this nursery will cover the soft landscaping needs of the projects in Qatar for the coming 25 years.

PPD is also contributing academically to the landscape profession by publishing books and brochures which document Qatar’s plants and information on its public parks. The last publication it issued was called the Trees Of Qatar, while the Arabic version has already been published, the English version is due to be issues soon. The aim is to help both landscape designers and the public know more about the flora of Qatar and the plants that can successfully tolerate the harsh climate within this area.

It seems that the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning with the help of the government and people are making strides in becoming ‘The Green Qatar’.

Sustainability elements address Human Health, Environmental Service and Economic Viability.

Significant open space was required for the massive development, sited on only 12.1 acres. A multi-level intensive green roof and landscaped plazas, provide a public park, food courts, and gathering areas. The 2.0 acre third floor roof

garden over the retail mall structure functionally and visually links the office towers, hotel/residential tower, retail mall, dining establishments and cultural center. It also forms a plateau that opens to vistas of the city around it, removing cars from the outdoor experience, and introducing a peaceful yet dramatic component to the design. The 0.55 acre fourth floor roof garden serves the hotel and residential units, continuing the aesthetic and environmental benefits of the green roof system. The nearly three-acre street level landscape and hardscape tie the development to its surroundings, and to the underground train station, below grade parking and service areas, with decorative atrium and vent perforations in the landscapes that bring light and air below ground.

The intensive green roof system, with soil depths as great as 6.5 feet, supports a wide variety of large trees and other densely planted native or

28 i www.landscape-me.com i december 2014

adapted material, providing more significant environmental services than traditional extensive green roof systems. Large trees provide greater air filtering capacity and carbon storage to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and greater cooling effect through evapotranspiration and shade. The green roof works in conjunction with high albedo, locally available concrete pavers to insulate the retail mall structure below, extending the life of the building, and reducing the building’s

energy use and its contribution to urban heat island effect. Towers one and two received LEED Gold Certification from the USGBC with at least four points contributed by landscape design and innovations for each tower.

The green roof planting beds capture, slow, and treat storm water runoff by reducing impervious surfaces. Runoff is directed towards the planters, allowing only minimal hand watering in order to support plants that were selected and

grouped for their adaptability to the site conditions, climate and design intent. Plant material and engineered soils were supplied by local sources.

The regeneration of human health and well-being is addressed on many levels. The site is inviting, elegant, accessible and user-friendly due to easy orientation from the surrounding structures, imparting a feeling of security and serenity. The roof gardens and street level landscapes are visible

from many levels of the complex and the adjacent buildings, allowing natural, restorative views into the site from the surrounding city. The roof garden includes peaceful, shaded sitting areas, as well as vibrant dining areas, with art and media connections to facilitate mental restoration and social interaction. Many of the plants provide fragrance for humans, and pollen or nectar for wildlife, and several have cultural importance in the Asian community.

Open space is pursued three-dimensionally, with a richly landscaped ground plane experience, connected by monumental stairs leading to a roof garden park above the retail mall podium, introducing the metaphor of a geological landscape, rather than a building. At night, the stairs are enhanced with blue lighting to simulate a waterfall, further enhancing the imagery. A wave-like glass atrium spine flows along the length of the elevated park in an undulating, tectonic fashion, further enhancing the experience of geologic formation, and allowing shafts of natural sunlight to visually connect the four levels of retail activity within, reducing the sense of enclosure below ground. From the park, one can

irrigation

Drip or BelowFlow Subsurface Textile Irrigation?BackgroundIrrigation & Water Technologies Pty Ltd (IWT) invented subsurface textile irrigation (SSTI) BelowFlow and Ebb&Flow product range in 1995 and patented them internationally. BelowFlow is also known as KISSS in other regions.

David Hinton, IWT’s Chief Technology Officer, led research worth several million dollars with peak scientific bodies in Australia such as the University of Western Sydney, University of Queensland, Charles Sturt University and CSIRO.

SSTI is a subsurface system that is installed about 200mm below the soil surface to create wide wetting patterns in lawns, gardens, tree crops, farms, landscape and vegetables in sites all around the world.

IWT manufactures the products in Sydney, Australia and the USA and sells into markets such as Australia, New Zealand, North America and China. In particular it has done projects in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman and Tunisia over the last seven years.

Data has been collected on water use and effects over those years in the hot summer climate of Dubai to make the BelowFlow products the most efficient watering system in the region.

Water SavingsOfficial water standard in the UAE is 15mm per day. IWT has data from the last 3 years in the UAE showing that BelowFlow can irrigate turf and keep it healthy, using 7mm per day in pure desert sand.

BelowFlow has also used TSE (Treated Sewage Effluent) water very successfully to deliver a broad wetting pattern that allows the nutrients in TSE water to be used effectively. Lines are kept clean by regularly flushing using the flushing lines built into the system.

In summary, BelowFlow has the following benefits:• It has a more uniform pattern • It has a wider wetting pattern • It can be buried deeper and wider in lawns • It uses less water (up to 70% less) • It is cost-competitive: with wider spacing, less infrastructure is needed, there is less ploughing and fewer connections

BelowFlow Case StudiesBelowFlow was installed into Pacific Hills School (in Sydney, Australia) in 1999. The soil was a sandy loam with a crushed sandstone base for drainage at 200mm depth.

BelowFlow was installed at

1m spacing and 200mm deep and its average water use in summer per day is 1.41mm/day.

The daily evaporation rate / day in summer is 7mm. The field is used every day and on weekends for football and other sporting activities.

Pacific Hills school oval, installed 1999

31 i www.landscape-me.com i december 2014

The second case study is a field in the UAE which was done at the planned Universal Studios site for Tatweer. The site was 600sqm in pure desert sand.

In late July, BelowFlow lines were installed 0.5m apart and 200-300mm deep with turf laid over the top. Monitoring was then performed

to see if BelowFlow would establish grass in the hottest summer months and to measure water usage and plant growth.

BelowFlow used an average daily application rate of 6.7mm per day and the turf performed very well with some overhead watering in the first

Remote Monitoring and ControlThe BelowFlow system has its own control and monitoring technology giving remote access to the irrigation system via mobile phone, iPad or PC. This information includes:• irrigation scheduling control• soil moisture • soil temperature• site temperature• pressure • flow and water usage• alarms

The control system also has the ability to apply liquid fertilizer directly to the root zone and is completely contained in a secure steel-plated box on site.

irrigationContainerized Plant ProductionIWT also has a state-of-the-art system for growing containerized plants called the Ebb&Flow mat that can produce very uniform crops using 60% less water than an overhead watering system. As with all IWT systems, it can be fully automated.

This system has been used in the UAE for four years to produce green fodder for animals. It produces up to 17kg/week/sqm of sprouted barley from only 1kg of seed.

Ebb&Flow Mat Ebb&Flow in Nurseries Overhead vs Ebb&Flow (right)

Ebb&Flow Mat Case Studies

Ebb and flow Mat was developed for plant nursery production and has been used for the last 16 years in Australia and North America in hundreds of nurseries. It is a three layered mat that has irrigation built into the system and produces a ring of water around every single container allowing the pots to take up the water they need producing very healthy roots and growth , minimizing water loss and labour but producing a very uniform crop.

Flower Power is a large group of nurseries in Sydney that have been using the mats since 1998 in both their production nursery and their retail outlets with great success. The mats were rolled on steel weld-mesh benches with the plants placed on top. Some overhead watering was initially required then the automated mats did the rest.

Coordinated Colour Nursery used the mats for over ten years on the ground and in greenhouses to produce a wide range of crops including Cyclamen, Roses, Poinsettias, shrubs and a range of trees.

This system has been used in Al Ain in the UAE for four years to produce green fodder for animals. It produces up to 17kg/week/sqm of sprouted barley from only 1kg of seed.

This project focuses on the Reinvention of the Vernacular by taking the rich traditions and heritage of the Asir Region as an area of intervention. Asir

not only provides a temperate climate and stunning mountains, but also boasts a rich regional culture with beautiful vernacular architecture made of slate, stone and mud bricks.

Specifically, this initiative intends to raise awareness of the historical villages of Asir, which were gradually abandoned by their residents over the course of the last 20 years in favour of modern more luxurious villas.

Over the course of the last two decades, the national economy, a booming tourism industry and the extensive road-building

program throughout Saudi Arabia have drawn Asir steadily into the Kingdom’s mainstream. While Asir is now entering a period of rapid transition due not only to tourism but also to rapid real estate development, most traditional villages are falling into decay. Our goal is to provide effective incentives to residents and the local government to preserve this important architectural heritage for future generations.

Our mission is therefore to position Asir as a signature region for progressive preservation by weaving local tradition and history into the global context of new media science, art, and technology - where conservation is not a goal in itself but a means to reinvent the vernacular.

Since the Asiris people always proudly lived off the land and built their houses in a self-sustained manner, they are in fact again at the forefront of what are considered globally cutting-edge trends. The question is now how we can bring Asir’s legacy of a self-sufficient

independent proud lifestyle into a meaningful future along with their rich tradition in the arts.

Beyond typical modes of conservation, we will research innovative modes of reinventing the vernacular with contemporary art and sustainable technologies. This is particularly interesting in a post-colonial climate of cross-cultural fertilization, where western artists, designers and architects seek inspiration from vernacular techniques and self-sustained living and where artists and architects in Saudi Arabia are seeking opportunities to enhance their own cultural resources with advanced technologies and local intelligence.

ART AS GENERATORThe fact is that any true identity emerges from both: the past and the future, memory and invention. If we prioritize one over the other, neglecting either memory or invention—the future or the past—part of our identity suffers. Hence the challenge becomes how we can reinvent the vernacular

36 i www.landscape-me.com i december 2014

in inventive and unexpected ways to bring the past into the future, and the future into the past to create a continuum. By redefining the experience of vernacular architecture through contemporary art interventions and sustainable technologies, our aim is to start a movement of awareness and engagement of the regional culture of Asir here in Saudi Arabia and beyond.

Art creates an awareness of places formerly unknown. Art creates a new identity of places by linking the past with the present and the future through reinvention. By creating cultural platforms and creative interventions, art gradually raises the perception, value and experience of a region.

combine traditional architecture with contemporary art in a unique setting.

In essence, we want to raise a desire to reinhabit these houses by connecting the long-standing culture of Asir effectively with new science and technology along with an ecological awareness, which relates to Asir’s past as an independent and self-sustained region that lived proudly off the land. These are cutting-edge trends that are currently capturing the world’s attention.

THE SITEThe site we selected is Al Okas, which is a small village in a beautiful mountainous setting very close to Abha, which is currently under consideration by The Saudi Ministry of Tourism and the Abha Amana for potential redevelopment. The village is a traditional stone village, which has been abandoned by its former owners who have either moved away or live in modern houses located in proximity to the old village.

For a week, this site will be transformed by color, light projections and sound installations, which will bring this village to the forefront of attention and transform this village into a multisensorial experience. The village will yet again become a lively place where people start conversations, remember their past but also discuss a potential future.

Public events will be hosted by the artists, Dar al Hekma University and the SCTA to help raise awareness to this village, spur new ideas of redevelopment and simply start conversations between the surrounding communities, owners, architects and institutions both on a local and national level.

CROSS CULTURAL MIX OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTSA cross-cultural mix of ten contemporary and traditional environmental artists will be invited from the Abha region, the US, France and Germany to participate in a site-specific series of installations that will transform Al Okas into a multi-sensorial experience with color, images, sound and patterns. For three days, this historical site will become a place for unique events and happenings.

PHASE II: Contemporary Art Foundation & Center for New Technologies

In the second phase, we would like to take the same site and convert it into a Contemporary Art Foundation and Center for New Technologies. This foundation will house a permanent collection of art, changing exhibitions along with an exploratory center for new science, technology and ecology.

It will become a forum for scholars, artists and architects who will research ways to bridge the past of Asir with a meaningful future by merging ancient wisdom with cutting edge trends. Currently, students of Dar Al Hekma are exploring new experimental ideas for this center, which will be exhibited at the village and opened for further discussion.PROJECT

Phase 1: short term vision and kick start

Site-specific art installation in one abandoned village

As a pioneer bridge building project, we envision to transform one abandoned village in the Abha region of Asir into a multi-sensorial art installation animated by projections, color and sound.

Our ambition is not to emulate the vernacular in a clichéd manner as a typical “touristic” village in a conserved manner but rather create an evocative statement of how to bring the rich heritage of Asir into a meaningful future.

Therefore, our goal is to demonstrate of how one might redefine and reclaim a historical village with advanced technologies and

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN SITE-SPECIFIC ART & ARCHITECTUREThe challenge of bringing young female students into the international art and architecture world has been a perennial one for educational institutions in Saudi Arabia. With access to online streaming media and personal entertainment devices, many of today’s students pass through their undergraduate years without having a meaningful experience in the arts and sciences. Yet new discoveries in learning sciences are revealing the importance of arts participation for creative thinking,

cross-cultural understanding and personal enrichment. Through this interdisciplinary cross cultural initiative, students from Dar Al Hekma University and other academic institutions in JedDar will have the opportunity to engage with a group of well-renowned international artists, scholars and architects outside of their usual academic curriculum within a framework of conceptual relevance both in and outside of the Middle East. Site visits, artist talks, interactive workshops, exhibitions, tutorials and other collaborative events with different architects, scholars and

artists foster interaction and collaboration within and across contexts. The Reinvention of the Vernacular will be hosted by Dar Al Hekma University in collaboration with the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities and will engage with a range of cultural and creative partners in the Kingdom.

The UK based Landscape firm with offices in Bath and Singapore are working on the Capitol building, a mixed-use redevelopment heritage site in

the city’s downtown civic district, the first phase of which is due to open at the end of this year.

Grant Associates has been responsible for all the landscape and public realm design for the project, working alongside the scheme’s lead architect, Richard Meir and Partners Architects who are charged with overseeing three conservation buildings comprising - Capitol Building, Stamford House and Capitol Theatre - which are

blended in with a new build luxury housing, hotel, theatre and retail development and a restored public realm along with a new civic plaza.

The project has themed residential roof gardens and terraces, including a reflexology garden and a ginger garden with crescent shaped swimming pools

planted with a sweep of red coloured Erythrina and specimen trees.

Director Keith French said a respectful approach to the civic and heritage setting and consideration of the vistas and views through to the Capitol Theatre and the views out to the adjacent St Andrew’s Cathedral were key elements in the design.

“A new city plaza is at the heart of the scheme and the central focus of

the development. It is conceived as an original and crafted civic space that will be a new destination for Singapore - a space for events and theatre, red-carpet galas, a place to gather and a place to rest and seek shade.”

The plaza will feature water walls and distinctive paving inspired by natural patterns and arranged as a double radial grid.

resort

It also includes the restored public realm, a new civic plaza at the heart of the integrated development as a focus for city events and activities together with residential roof gardens and terraces.

A New Civic Space for Singapore

The main civic space and plaza will be unique to Singapore and is intended to be an experience that is both refined and extraordinary in the day and magical at night. It is respectful of the heritage context and encapsulates spaces for events, performance, peace, nature, exhibition, recreation and relaxation.

“Water walls are adjacent to the Capitol Theatre between the pilasters of the façade adding further sound and movement. Street furniture is positioned on the circular plaza encouraging the meeting of people, as well as being placed carefully through the development.

Paving arrangement uniting heritage with the new“The distinctive paving arrangement of Capitol Singapore is a key ingredient bringing together the heritage buildings with the new architecture and is developed in response to the strong geometry of the circular plaza and canopy at the heart of the scheme.

The paving is inspired from natural patterns and is arranged as a double radial grid that flows across the site. The flowing lines of the paving encourage movement and connection through the site, linking the various developments together as one place, as well as being an appropriate response to ground the heritage buildings.

The GalleriaThe Galleria is a new sheltered street protected from weather by an ultra-light cable truss roof fitted with glass panels. Shade sails and planted spheres are suspended below the glass roof to manage solar heat and to create an animated space reminiscent of historic open-air markets of Singapore. The Galleria will be a destination for dining and events, with retail spaces due to open in the fourth quarter of 2014 and residential spaces opening in the second quarter of 2015.

In close proximity to the world-famous Emirates Palace, at Corniche Road - the beach promenade - a premium location in the centre of Abu Dhabi, the planned hotel aims to position and prove itself

among high-class business hotels.

An expressive form presents a unique appearance from every perspective. The modern and luxurious design concept creates a most comprehensive experience. The design offers a comprehensive assortment on amenities, ranging from a helicopter pad with elevator access, various restaurants and wellness enticements to a marina complex. All together the Emirates Pearl Hotel has 365 rooms - from a double room to a luxury suite - that offer comfortable accommodation for every guest.

Two semi-circular hotel wings spiral upwards around an elliptical circulation core. All the rooms have balconies which define the building’s characteristic outward appearance with a linear composition of railing elements. Coated glass panes provide sun protection and open up views, metal louvers complement these elements.

The ground floor is a completely transparent volume which contains all public and administrative functions of the hotel. Above it rises a five-storey podium volume, which is separated from the towering hotel levels by a second interstice - the Podium Roof - where bar, terrace, pool and Jacuzzi are situated. In cooperation with DL architect. The further development is being done by DL architect.

To organize the small garden of this semi-detached house, with just 50m2 the space has a swimming pool and two main outdoor living spaces: the access

area to the house and the garden space itself. Both are separated by a rockery, making them already somewhat obsolete and out of context for a house of such sober and modern architecture.

The new design should give prominence to the garden of this luxury property as well as being a reflection of the owner’s psychology. The garden should be a living area to be ultilized. Therefore the general lines of the project are the following: 1. Provide an elegant and clean entrance, without fanfare.2. Solve the one metre height between access and pool area.3 Hide from the neighbors and create privacy with respect to the entrance.

Then, it is proposed to work with the phenomenology versus the static solutions

The Amparo’s PlaceLuxury Outdoor Living

and in which water takes on a key role. In addition, the Spanish heritage of the client had to be taking into consideration.

The solution adopted was to build a pond in two heights, which according to ambivalent space replaces the current rockery. The modern and contemporary water surface runs like a tapestry of sensations where reflections, transparencies and sounds appear. Next to it, there is a continental garden full of plants reminiscent of Madrid’s mountains. The wáter is surrounded by oak, strawberry trees, myrtle, jasmine and laurel.

The pond works differently in the entrance and solarium. At the entrance, a delicate water surface welcomes us. On the other hand, this space with oriental overtones is broken when we are in the pool area. There, the noise of the waterfall breaks the stillness of the beginning.

Concrete and marble. The pond is configured by four elements:Water surfaceA cube of 50 x 50 x 50 cm as a minimalist fountain The waterfallThe compensation vessel under the waterfall, it hides the filter and the pump.

The pond vessel is built in reinforced concrete and hand-trowelled finish. For its coronation and the cube face, were opts for the travertine of 4 cm thick rough, unpolished and open hole. A material with soul and long-lasting. Also contrast with the trowelled concrete, its alter ego on the fronts of the pond and waterfall. The idea is to encourage an atmosphere change through the alternation of the materials. Travertine is protagonist of the entrance while we go closer to the solarium, the concrete becomes more prevalent.

bOOK desCriPtiON:this is a peculiar book of architecture; it pays an home age to an absence. that which is missing the roof is supplanted by terraces, balconies, and dream gardens. inside this book, the most inspired architects and landscapers take to the
