Questions Frequently Asked About Young Wildlife

Q. A moment ago, I accidentally kicked opena nest of baby rabbits while walking in thethick grass at the far corner of my backyard. They seem so helpless. I waited, but saw nosign of their mother. Should I rescue them?A. No. The mother would not return as longas you remained at the nest. Just replacethe top of the nest that you uncovered andleave. The mother will return and care forthe young. Cottontail rabbits leave theiryoung for hours while eating, but they doreturn to nurse the young.

Q. A baby bird fell out of its nest that is in atree in my backyard. I am afraid somethingmight happen to it if I leave it here on theground. Should I bring it into the house andfeed it until it is able to fly?A. No. The best thing to do is put the birdcarefully back into the nest. Don't worryabout getting your scent on the bird; it willnot affect the mother's care. If you find thatthe nest has fallen from the tree, put thenest back in the tree securely along with thenestling. If you cannot find or reach the nest, put the young bird into a small box or basketand set it at a lower point in the tree. Theadults will care for the chicks and they willbe safe from ground predators.

Q. A few minutes ago, I was walking throughthe woods and saw several baby raccoonson the ground near a large hollow tree. Iwonder if they fell out of the hole way up inthe tree and the mother has abandonedthem because she can't put them back intheir nest. Should I bring them home andcare for them?A. No. Most likely, the young raccoons aremerely exploring and their mother is nearby. They are probably old enough to be fullycapable of climbing back up the tree to theirden when they are ready to return. If theyare too young to climb, the mother will carrythem back.

Q. This morning I found an abandoned fawnnear the edge of a field on my property. Ibrought the fawn into my house to save it,but I don't know how to care for it. Whatshould I do?A. Immediately take the fawn back to thespot where you found it, and leave it there. The mother should come back again lookingfor the fawn. Even one to two days afterremoval from the wild, fawns have beensuccessfully reunited with their mothers byreturning them to the place where they werefound. When you picked up the fawn, themother was probably eating not far away.Usually young fawns are quite safe when leftalone because their color pattern and lack ofscent help them to remain undetected untiltheir mother's return.

BORN TO BE WILDHelp keep them wild!

Every year during the spring and earlysummer, the lives of many young animalsare disrupted. People encountering youngwild animals attempt to "save" them.Chances are the mother was close by,helplessly watching as her young weretaken. Although well meaning, efforts to"save" these babies often do more harmthan good. If not properly handled or raisedthese “saved” animals may be sentenced toa lifetime of captivity or reduced chances ofsurvival in the wild.

It's a normal human instinct to want tocare for a helpless-looking young animalthat is found. These newborn or newly -hatched youngsters venturing into the worldon shaky legs and untried wings are oftenlearning survival skills from their parents. The perils of survival are part of the naturalworld around us. Some young wildlife willnot survive. However, the ones that dosurvive are usually the most fit for theirenvironment and to perpetuate the species.

Instinctively, some animals quicklydevelop the skills they need to survive.Ducklings are walking and feeding momentsafter they're born. Robins, on the otherhand, spend weeks in the nest being fed bytheir parents before they'll go out on theirown. Other animals develop survival skillsover a longer period of time. Young rac-coons must remain with their mother in afamily group throughout summer and intothe winter learning how to survive.

It is during this important developmentalstage when many baby animals are foundand thought to be orphaned. Many peopleassume that young wildlife seen without a

parent have been abandoned. They believethe young animals are helpless and need tobe saved. These acts of kindness oftendecrease the animal’s chances of survivaland leading a natural life in the wild. Whenyoung animals are removed from the wildthey are denied the most important naturallearning experiences. Worse, most peoplequickly find they do not really know how tocare for young animals.

If the young animals do survive incaptivity and are released back into the wild, they have missed the experiences that helpthem to fend for themselves and are morelikely to perish. Their ability to find naturalfoods is limited. Their defenses againstpredators are lacking. And they may findthemselves an unwelcome intruder in theterritory of another member of their species.

Often, care given to young wildlife byuntrained individuals unavoidably results insome attachment to people. Upon releaseinto the wild, those animals generally havelittle fear of humans. Some return to placeswhere people live, only to be attacked bydomestic animals or to be hit by cars. Somebecome nuisances getting into stored food, trash cans or dwellings. People have alsobeen injured by once-tamed wildlife.

WHAT TO DOLeave them alone!

You can actually increase youngwildlife’s chances of survival by followingone simple rule when finding them: LEAVETHEM ALONEI It may be difficult to do, butthis is the real act of kindness. In nearly allcases, young wildlife do not need to besaved. Resist the temptation to help them.Only when they are found injured or withtheir dead mother is there reason to dosomething, and the State's wildlife law isspecific about what may be done legally.

State law protects nearly all wild birdsand mammals. They may not be legallytaken from the wild or kept in captivity.Never consider them as possible pets; it isboth illegal and unwise. They are wildanimals that belong in the wild. However, adistressed or injured wild animal maylegally be kept temporarily with thepermission of the Division (other than apotentially dangerous species) providedthat:

1. The Division of Fish and Wildlife lawenforcement office in your area, DEPEmergency Hotline, or the WildlifeControl Unit is notified of the situationwithin 12 hours, and

2. The Division’s Wildlife Control Unitprescribes a course of action that is inthe best interest of the animal.Normally the problem will be referredto a wildlife rehabilitator who has therequired experience, permits andfacilities to properly care for injuredand distressed wildlife.
