    Baby News

Congratulations to Mrs Carlson and her husband who have

announced that they will be expecting their first child towards

    the end of the year.

    Staffing News

Congratulations to Mrs Jane Parish who has been appointed permanently to Chatswood Public School from

the commencement of 2020. Although it will be a loss to our school, a permanent teaching position with the

Department of Education is what our teachers all strive for and we are very excited for Mrs Parish.

Staff Development Day: Feedback That Makes Learning Visible

Last Monday, staff participated in a full day of professional learning with Corwin University on ‘Feedback

That Makes Learning Visible’. Workshops included: Learning From Others, The Visible Learning Research and

the Role of Feedback, Getting the Basics Right – The Role of Learning Intentions and Success Criteria, The

Instructional Feedback Model, The Role of Praise and Feedback to Teachers.

It was a very productive day and all teachers are very keen to put their learning into action in the classroom

by consciously providing feedback to students at the appropriate level, providing feedback based on the

learning intentions and success criteria for the lesson and learning to separate praise from instructional

    feedback.

  • Resilience Doughnut Peer Support Program

This term Year 5 and year 6 students have been given the opportunity to teach younger students from

Kindergarten to Year 4 how to be resilient with the Resilience Doughnut program. This term we will have

eight lessons to teach and familiarise the students with the seven factors which contribute to being resilient

which include; the parent factor, skill factor, family and identity factor, education factor, peer factor,

    community factor and money factor.

Part of this program is for our year five and year six students to take on a leadership role as well as create

new relationships with younger students. This includes being a positive role-model and leading by example.

As well as this, we will be able to develop these relationships outside of the 45 minute session of peer

support by simply saying hello and or playing with them in break times.

By Holly, Bridgette and Grace of class 6J

    Parent Forum - Resilience Doughnut

Last night, we held a parent forum introducing parents to The Resilience Centre Director, Lyn Worsley who

presented on 'Parents Promoting Resilience: Building Resilience and Optimism in Your Child.' It was fantastic

to see so many of our parents come along and participate in the presentation and we know parents got so

much information out of it from the feedback we received.

Some parents were asking about getting a copy of the presentation. Unfortunately, we are unable to get a

copy; however, Lyn has written a book called 'The Secret of Strong Kids: Building Resilience into the Common

Language of Families.' The school will get copies of the book and make it available in our parent library in the

office in the coming week for parents to borrow.

The students have also started participating in their Peer Support Resilience Program. Each fortnight, the Year

5 and 6 students will update families in the newsletter what the focus has been so the common language can

    be used at home.

Anaphylaxis at Lane Cove West Public School

We have a small number of children who could have a potentially life

    threatening allergic reaction to nuts.

How can parents help these children?

Choose alternative sandwich spreads to peanut butter and Nutella.

Inform your child that these foods can trigger an anaphylactic

    reaction.

Reinforce the school’s NO FOOD SHARING message.

    Lost Property

Before the end of Term 2 holidays there was a huge amount of lost property. In order to sort out all this

lost property and return to students countless hours are spent by staff and students. This takes time away

from quality teaching and learning and as a result will no longer be done. However, we have been very

fortunate that a parent volunteered their time to sort and return the large amount of lost property which

was redistributed today. Thank you Mrs Booth for taking on the onerous task which benefits the Lane Cove

West community. If you would like to volunteer your time to assist in the ongoing sorting of lost property

please email Mr Josling at [email protected]

Thanks again to Mrs Booth for your assistance in this enormous task.

    Calling all Scientists and

    Engineers!

In celebration of this year’s National Science

Week, we are holding a whole school Science Day on Thursday August 22 2019 and are seeking people

who work in or have a background in scientific or engineering fields to help present an activity for a

class or a number of classes over the course of the day.

the day (11:30am – 1:00pm) session, please complete the expression of interest form that was sent

home last week, or email Mrs Lee at [email protected].

    Sports lessons– Coach Brown

Please be mindful that Coach Brown’s classroom is the school oval and teaching continues until school

ends at 3.25pm. We would appreciate parents keeping their younger children away from the teaching

space and sporting equipment. Please keep a reasonable distance from the class if you are walking past so

that the children’s learning can continue without interruption.

  • WriteOn Competition: LCWPS Entries

WriteOn is an annual writing competition open to all NSW primary students in Years 1 to 6. The

competition provides students with the opportunity to become published authors with winning entries from

the competition being published in a Best of WriteOn anthology. Below are some outstanding pieces of work

submitted by our students. They should be congratulated for crafting such interesting and creative

    responses to the stimulus.

Little Girl is a Wizard – Annalise 2C

Once there was a girl walking on the pathway and her name was Anna. Then a boy knocked into her

and dropped his hat. The hat is a wizard hat with lots of pink hearts and blue stars. She got up to give the

hat back to him but by the time she got up he was gone. She was wondering why the boy knocked into

    her.

She thought that he might be her long-lost brother but then why would he knock into her. So she decided

to pack to go looking for the boy.

She had spent two days looking near the place where they had bumped into each other. She was lucky

that she had a photo of him because at that minute she saw the boy. Anna went over to the boy and

asked him his name. “It is Jack,” the boy said.

Jack said, “The reason I knocked into you is because your mum is a wizard”. So they went to her mum in

wizard world when they got there Anna was so happy to see her mum Anna became a wizard. When Anna

was 13 she went back to her home.

When Anna got home there was a box at her door when she opened it up it was a cat Anna named it

Whizzy. Anna was so happy and it was from her mum.

Jack he moved to a different country - Canada - because he really wanted to ski.

  • Hats– Max

Hats protect you from the sun. You can play with a hat in the sun. There are lots of hats used every day

    for different wears.

A hat is used for lots of things. Here are some examples, growing plants, container, bin, compost bin,

    tool box and more.

Tonnes of hats are used for different things every day. Not just wearing. Hats are awesome!

The Nature Hats– Amity age 8

‘Yay!’ I mumbled. I was finally getting a dressing table. Why? Because I had so many hats. They were over

flowing my wardrobe and I just could not stand having hats everywhere, nor could my mum, nor could my

dad, nor could my sister and brother, you see no one could stand it. Not at all. Not one bit. And now here I

was. I stopped daydreaming and began peering through the glass of: Tim`s Dressing Tables and Hats. ‘I may

need a new hat’ I whispered unlikely to myself. I had thirty eight at home. As I walked in the shop and a big

pink table came in my sight.

    Chapter 2

NO, NO, NO!!! My brain shouted. My head heart from the shouting that was going on inside it. I just didn’t

feel comfortable with pink around me. Instead a lovely navy blue and turquoise dressing table caught my

eyes. I immediately ran to my mum and she looked at the price tag. ‘Cheap, come on Lila, let’s get this

dressing table purchased’ said mum. I walked over to the other side of the shop where the hats were

displayed. ‘Hmm’ I said under my breath so no one could hear. I looked at a hat that looked very simple. A

small blue hat. Everyone looked at me as I reached for the hat. As I put it on flowers began to grow and

after about five seconds the hat was a like a royal garden. How could this happen? I thought. Everyone

looked at me and one of the people said she’s gone that was all I heard.

    Chapter 3

I was in a land of nature. I had actually disappeared from the shop to a whole new world. This was a world

of: The nature hats. I looked around trying on new hats but I was stopped by a giant green hat. It was as

big as a giant. I knew I was only in year five at school but I knew there was more to me than an eleven year

old girl and that I really did have magic to go to this land. I found my confidence and climbed over the giant

hat covered in flowers. On the other side of the hat was a big cliff leading to nothing. I closed my eyes and

whispered I want to go home. In a second I was back at the hat shop the nature hat was it’s same blue and

I ran to my mum who was about to purchase my table. ‘Mum, can I have this hat, its mag- it’s pretty and

blue!’ I said in a heap. ‘Sure darling one more hat, but only one more’ explained mum. Thankyou. I said and

once again I don’t know any more.
