Cellist Matthew Barley comes together with top flight Indian musicians to explore the fascinating connections between music, mathematics, and architecture, ending their journey in Le Corbusier’s city of Chandigarh in the Punjab.

The ‘Father of Numbers’, Pythagoras, will be looking over the shoulders of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Xenakis several times during the Festival. Armonico Consort will be exploring the ‘spatial’ masterpieces of Renaissance Italy composed by Monteverdi, Gabrieli, Allegri, and Palestrina for the great acoustic and architectural spaces of Venice, Florence and Rome.

One of the finest of ensemble groups, Calefax bring their breath-taking wind quintet to a concert with Matthew Barley. Violinist Christian Tetzlaff, who dazzled in a previous solo recital, returns with pianist Lars Vogt. The renowned Canadian pianist Louis Lortie is finally available after years of trying, and comes with fellow Canadian Hélène Mercier in a dazzling concert of works for two piano. Korean pianist, Sunwook Kim, Leeds First Prize-winner, previously denied us by British Border control, is finally among us, living in West Wimbledon and playing at the Festival.

There’s plenty of fun and theatrics too: A spectacular Jazz-night ‘Swinging at the Cotton Club’ with the Lindy Hop Dance Company and The Harry Strutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra; violinist Hugo Ticciati and the O/Modernt Ensemble get lost in musical Labyrinths; Walton’s ‘Façade’ has Richard Stilgoe and Patricia Hodge; dramatic mezzo-soprano Luciana Mancini, from Berlin Staatsoper, goes mad with Vivaldi; there are super-theatrics with Regent Opera’s updated version of Tosca.

The Festival concludes with a joyous exploration of ‘numbers’ with the Philharmonia Orchestra in a programme of Bach, Bartok, ending with Mozart’s most extraordinary, final symphony, the ‘Jupiter’, in which five themes come together in a dazzling fugal finale.

Born in Mexico City in 1992, now living in the Netherlands, Dana Zemtsov is one of the most outstanding viola soloists of her generation. Bach relishes working out multiple fugues in his Ricercar from the Musical Offering; Bartok entertains with shifting rhythms and tonalities, and fugal writing in his delicious neo-classical Divertimento; and Mozart dazzles with a finale that contains a 5-voice fugue representing the five major themes of the symphony.

Formed in 2013 at the Royal Northern College of Music, A4 Brass Quartet comprises principal players from some of the UK’s top brass bands, including Grimethorpe Colliery, Brighouse & Rastrick and Foden’s. With ‘technical virtuosity in abundance’ (Brass Band World), these four astonishing musicians come together to perform both lyrical and high-octane works, forming a distinctive and new take on chamber music.

WIMF is happy to have any genre of music, though reflecting the Festival we anticipate that the majority will be classical.

We would particularly value chamber music groups as well as solo performers.

When booking online, tickets can be printed at home as e-tickets, or you may choose to have them sent to you via post for an additional £1.75 postage fee

For those who prefer to book by telephone you will be pleased to know that the telephone booking line is open daily from Monday to Friday 9.00am to 7.00pm (excluding bank holidays) and Saturdays 9.00am to 5.00pm telephone number 0333 666 3366

Customers choosing to use the telephone service will pay the same rate as someone booking online and choosing to receive ‘standard post’ tickets i.e. tickets + £1.50 booking fee (per transaction) + the standard post rate of £1.75. Tickets for telephone bookings received more than three working days before the event may be dispatched by post, or email. Tickets for telephone bookings received less than four working days before the event will be sent to the customer as an e-ticket to their email address

Customers without email will be supplied with their booking confirmation number which will be required, along with some form of identification, for admission at the door

A major string quartet can cost from £5,000 to £8,000. A high profile piano recital can cost considerably more than this.

One international pianist explained that whilst he could undertake much of the chamber repertoire in a day or two, preparing for and performing a major recital was akin to competing in the Olympics. Behind a 100 minute recital can be a thousand hours of preparation.

WIMF attracts wonderful audiences, with an admired record of ticket sales covering artists costs. But venues, lighting, promotion, administration are all in addition to this. To transport a piano (sometimes required for a single concert) is £1,400, PRS payment for music in copyright can be several thousand, the design, printing and distribution of brochures - substantial…

Behind the scenes efforts to secure Arts Council funding, applications to Trust Funds, seeking out Corporate and Event Sponsors consume hundreds and hundreds of hours… All of which is why the Festival is so greatly indebted to you, our Benefactors and Friends for your support.
