Spring is on its way! The bulbs in all our village pots and along bythe phone box are pushing their way up. Someone (DW) hasplanted some snowdrops too.....and it wasn't our friendly gnome(who sometimes sits on the Brownie Bench)! We are still having fun in our meetings. Our Christmas Sleepoverat Elton was blessed with fine weather, and we were able to getoutside to do grass-sledging and a quest. We even saw a deerbut not one of Santa's!This term we are hoping to amalgamate our diminished Districtwith Radcliffe-on-Trent, where we will be hoping to make newfriends and gain some much needed support. We're alreadylinking up there later in February for a special Thinking Day eventwhich includes a Badge.I am still very grateful to all those people who help week uponweek to keep our Brownies going - Vicki, Cate, Phoebe, Emma,Olivia and now Kate as well. Thanks to Lu and Di who helpedwith the Sleepover. Thank you to the parents who havevolunteered too. I don't know what the future holds for BarnstoneBrownies.....I really do need to retire before too long!Best wishesBrown Owl

BINGHAM & DISTRICT AUDIO MAGAZINE

Some of you may already be aware that an audio magazine isproduced in Bingham by a group of volunteers. The magazine isissued on a CD once a month, free of charge, and brings news, talks, interviews and reports on local topics to people who maybe visually impaired, have restricted mobility, or older people whojust want to relax and listen to a monthly audio magazine andcatch up on local events.Although the magazine is produced in Bingham, it aims to includenews, articles and events from the district surrounding the town. Ihave agreed to act as a correspondent for our villages and wouldbe interested in collecting news on what is happening in ourParish that we would like to share with listeners of the magazine.I would particularly like to interview local residents about theirpersonal stories, which could be historical, topical, orreminiscences of life in the villages, as well as information onyour own interests or hobbies. If you would like to contribute tothis project then please contact me by telephone on 01949861446 or email at [email protected] .If you would be interested in receiving copies of the audiomagazine each month, then please contact me and I will explainthe procedure for becoming a listener.

Ba Barnstone Bowls Club 2020 Season

As I write this the wind is howling, the rain is lashing against the window and playingbowls in the warm summer sunshine seems a million miles away. However, preparations for the season are already underway. A few repairs are needed on thegreen surrounds, a new memorial seat wants installing and we intend to repair theexternal render on the clubhouse and redecorate if the lousy weather ever lets up.Last season was a success both on and off the bowling green. We reached thesemi-final of The Belvoir League Knock-out Cup, finished second by just one point toBingham in the Nottinghamshire Bowls Federation Saturday League Division One,reached the final of the all-Nottinghamshire knock-out competition known as the SteeleTrophy but lost to Kirkby-in-Ashfield and narrowly won the Third Division of the Leagueof Country Bowling Clubs by one point seeing off St James’ Park.Recruitment over the last couple of years has brought some new members into theClub who seem to be enjoying the friendliness and welcome given to them. Some arebeginners who are looking forward to some coaching and practice at the beginning ofthe season; others are more experienced, wanting to compete for places in the Leagueteams. We are still looking for new members though, so if you fancy giving it a try ring me on01949 861353 or Jim Besson on 0115-933 4735. Alternatively, the pre-season meetingis being held in the Clubhouse at 7.30pm on Wednesday 11 March. Just turn up. Thereare bowlers of all levels of ability in the Club. If you are a learner you will be looked afterand encouraged; as I say, a welcome awaits you. Besides the League matches thereare club competitions and ‘roll-up’ days where members play for fun. Some of ourmembers join so they can just organise and enjoy a game among themselves. Thechoice is yours. We now offer social membership to those who don’t want to bowl but may enjoy the‘partying’ bit. A number of social events are already organised for 2020 including B-B-Qevenings and a quiz night. There are plans for a bit of ballroom dancing, eveningdinner, ramble or two, race night, cheese and wine, etc. After the season there is amodestly priced non-bowling weekend in Paignton; everyone is welcome on that.In addition, there is also the Presentation Dinner, which is at the end of the season ofcourse and the infamous Tribute Nights. For the uninitiated, Barnstone Bowls Clubstages these nights at Cotgrave Institute twice a year and send every penny toMacmillan Cancer Support. We have raised over £42,000 so far. At the last event inNovember nearly 250 people enjoyed a brilliant show from Jimmy Jemaine and friendswho gave us Cliff Richard and The Shadows. They were superb. We were very gratefulfor the compliments received from those who attended. Thank you to everyone whosupported it.The next one on 20 March will be the 30th event we’ve staged, which is testament tothe support we have had. Ian Scott will perform his tribute to Sir Tom Jones plus JackyWebbe will portray the one and only Diva of Motown, Diana Ross. They are bothhigh-class performers; what a night we have in store. Tickets are on sale now at£10.00, which includes a FREE raffle and are available from me 01949 861353, JohnParker 01949 860301 or Cotgrave Welfare. Get your friends together, order yourtickets and come and party for Macmillan. You won’t regret it; 250 people can’t be wrong!

News from the Parish CouncilHello all. Here’s the latest from the Parish Council.

Village Hall. As many of you will know by now, Rushcliffe Borough Council haveapproved our application to demolish and re-build the village hall. The next stage inthis process will be to take the scheme to a more detailed specification and thenseek competitive tenders for the delivery of the project from local contractors. Thiswill assist in firming up the overall budget for the project, whilst also consideringfunding streams, and discussions with several bodies have already started. Watchthis space!Langar Village Pond. Steered by Cllr. Adrian Bellamy, an enthusiastic group ofvolunteers have turned the village pond in Langar into a wildlife haven, completewith path, benches and wetland area. We now await the Spring display of shrubsand bulbs planted just before Christmas. Our thanks to the Wildflower Farm for theirsupport with this.Following a successful application, the Woodland Trust has approved our requestfor hedgerow saplings to be planted in March, to define the space and separate itfrom the pub car park; a working party will be required to assist with this plantingnearer the time.

Barnstone Play and Gym Area. Followingcommunity feedback, and with the active involvementof interested residents, the Parish Council is indiscussion about upgrading the facilities at thechildren’s’ play area and adults’ outdoor gym. The aimis to make the play area a more interesting andchallenging experience for all those who use theequipment.

Parish Clerk. Last, but not least, is the news that Claire Pegg, our Parish Clerk, willbe retiring at the end of April. We all owe Claire a big debt of gratitude for her manyyears of service in, and enthusiasm for, the role. Recruitment for her replacement iscurrently underway.

Langar C of E Primary School

The term started with a bang here at school as our children in Key Stage1 were welcomed back with a fantastic African drumming workshop!Steve Rivers from Unbeatable Energybrought in djembe drums for everychild and the whole school was full ofthe sound of percussive music andcall-and-response singing. Theworkshop launched our Explore topicswhich are all based aroundgeography themes.Last term saw the childrenDiscovering as our topics werehistory-based. We were thrilled to learn about the local history of our areaand find out local links to wider, national historical events. Bill Darguecame in to run a staff meeting - it isn't only children who learn here! - andshared the website he has constructed for us! His passion for the subjectwas infectious and the staff felt inspired by the work he had put into it. Ihave a personal sense of pride in the resource as Bill is my dad!https://historyoflangarforyoungpeople.jimdofree.com/Our curriculum here is not just built around subject-based learning. Ourcore values and commitment to providing children with learning skills forlife are central to our curriculum model. Before Christmas we were veryproud of the children who had many opportunities to apply our values oftaking care, thoughtfulness, respect, love and fairness. We were thrilledto be able to welcome members of the community to the Nativityperformance followed by a delicious Christmas lunch. The children madeexcellent hosts and, as Mr Bond said, were  'full of enthusiasm and goodto be with.' The children continued to consider our neighbours as theycollected items for the Reverse Advent Calendar, this year to be donatedto the homeless at The Friary. The term ahead is jam-packed with learning experiences, trips andactivities which makes it a wonderful place to be a pupil. We do havelimited places in some year groups. If you would like to find out moreabout life at Langar then please phone the school office to arrange a visit- 01949 860056 - and talk to Mrs Whelan or Mrs George, our OfficeManagers.Mrs E J BrownHead Teacher

RAIN DOES NOT STOP PLAY FOR LANGAR SCHOOL PUPILS

Whilst we are approaching Spring(hopefully), we are still recovering fromStorm Brendan and weeks and weeks ofvery wet weather. The rest of us may have stayed out of therain deluge, but young pupils at LangarChurch of England Primary School havebeen positively embracing it, thanks to arecent donation of waterproof suits!Research has proven the health andeducational benefits of outdoor play, sostaff at the school were delighted whenwe donated 16 of the weatherproof all-in-ones for Class 1.

We were really pleased to be able tosupport the school in such a practical way

and are pleased to hear how much enjoyment the pupils are getting from wearing the suits!

The Headteacher Emily Brown said: “Our young pupils enjoy messing about in the rain duringbreak and lunch times, but we were struggling to keep them dry for later lessons. We weredelighted when Tarmac agreed to make a donation to cover the costs of these waterproof‘onesies’. Class 1 pupils (aged 4/5) thoroughly enjoy the suits and use them daily for outdoorlearning and play.”

A good start to 2020, a newmember already; welcome, BryanRoe, hope you will be happy withus. The Annual General Meeting wentoff very well and was over in notime as it all flowed very efficientlyand the current Chair (NickyPulford), the Secretary (GillianClarke) and the Treasurer (PhilipClarke) were all able to stand againand were voted in by majority. TheFinancial report was accepted, aswere the minutes of the previousAGM.So........... 2020! What are weplanning? Our first demonstration was by ourvery own Cyril Richardson onacrylics on 28th January. We usedeither a board or a canvas, whichCyril supplied, and then he setabout showing us how to put theacrylic paints onto the surface andstart make a picture.

We started off with grey – load thebrush with white and a touch ofblack, now spread it all over thecanvas. The colour isn’t even, itisn’t supposed to be, butbackground done. Darken thecorner with a touch more black(storm clouds?).Next change the brush, load it withwhite again and make some stripesto indicate trees, don’t forgetperipheral, smaller, higher goingback. Pick up a metal or plasticpalette knife, dip the edge in theblack and touch the edge of thewhite tree and drag across - voilabark! Branches, white again andline faintly with black. Now the lady, she is wearing a scarlet dress andhas black hair and you can see herarms, no face. Arms firstorange/white = flesh, dress scarletand just a few black lines lightly toshow folds, now her hair flowingdown her back! Wow!!! Well doneall!

UpdateProgress since the last update

The new year has seen us commence our training in pottery identification. To support this we haveinvested in reference materials and extra storage to create a project reference collection to help isin identifying our existing finds and any arising from our future field work. We also hope to create asmall collection of pottery finds for Langar School to support the Roman and Saxon section of theHistory Curriculum.

Pottery identification in progress.

We have also completed our search of items listed in the county Historical Environment Record(HER) and marked these on our area map. We are expecting to add to this with new records afterthe talk to be given by the Nottinghamshire HER Officer at one of our meetings in February.

Geoff Kimbell has obtained the geophysical data from the archaeological survey carried outahead of the construction of the Langar Lane Solar Farm and plotted this along with the data forthe St Ethelburga site. The Solar Farm data has been interpreted as a Romano-British settlementand there are similarities with those of St Ethelburga’s, albeit being more extensive.

The results are shown on the next page.

Conduct landscape studies into the Roman settlement and road systems3. Undertake further documentary and archival research to compliment the fieldwork4. Pay for specialists and professional training for project members5. Compile professional archaeological reports to be made available to the wider public6. Host a number of public outreach events7. Provide further educational sessions for the local school8. Contribute to the regional Historic Environment RecordMore news in the next issue of Signpost.

Your Help is Required

We know that the St Ethelburga site was partially excavated in 1959 to 1961 by a Mr HerbertHouldsworth. Unfortunately he appears to have not published his results. Does anyoneremember the dig taking place and have any information to share?

We also believe that during the time that Mr Gwilym Lewis was Headmaster of Langar School anumber of excavations around the village were carried out by pupils under his supervision, possibly in the 1970’s or 1980’s. We would love to hear from anyone who could confirm this, especially if you were involved.
