Lange struck out four and only yielded two hits and one walk over his six frames, at one point rering 13 P-Nats in a row. The Birds backed Lange early; In the second inning, Andruw Monasterio tripled before Kevonte Mitchell’s sacrifice fly made it 1-0. D.J. Wilson’s RBI single later in the frame made it 2-0. Myrtle Beach added to their lead an inning later on Mitchell’s RBI ground out. Once Lange departed from the game, Jose Paulino pitched two scoreless innings before Jhon Romero struck out two in the ninth for his sixth save. LIFE’S BETTER WHEN YOU DON’T ALLOW RUNS Myrtle Beach concluded their four-game sweep of Potomac by posng back-to-back shutouts for the first me since the club accumulated three straight blankings from June 13-15 of last season. The Pelicans’ 10 shutouts in 2018 trails only Buies Creek’s 13, with third-place Carolina and Lynchburg back at eight. Meanwhile, in their series with the P-Nats, the Birds surrendered two runs on 21 hits in 36.0 innings (0.50 ERA). Myrtle Beach’s starng pitching quartet of Erich Uelmen, Bryan Hudson, Tyson Miller and Alex Lange did not allow a run on 12 hits in their 22.2 frames on the series. HOW SWEEP IT IS The Pelicans broomed away Potomac with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday, sealing the club’s first four-game sweep since taking all four games in their series with Carolina from August 4-7, 2016. The Birds also recorded a four-game sweep of Potomac from June 4-7 of that championship season, which marks the last me Myrtle Beach broomed the P-Nats. The sweep also ended a four-series losing streak, the worst of the season for the Pelicans. ‘PEN PALS Arguably the strength of the club in 2018, Myrtle Beach’s bullpen has put together a strong run of late. Over the last nine games, Pelicans relievers have surrendered just six runs, five earned, on 21 hits in 32.0 innings for a 1.41 ERA. The Birds’ bullpen has combined for 32 strikeouts against six walks during this span. POWER OUTAGE From the 2014 through 2017 seasons, Myrtle Beach finished every campaign in the top half of the Carolina League in home runs. In fact, the Pelicans clubbed a total of 368 long balls, an average of 92 per year. However, with just 34 homers on their ledger through 83 games, the Birds are on pace for just 57 bombs in 2018, which would be the fewest in a single season in Pelicans history. Entering play on Wednesday, Myrtle Beach has gone 14 games in a row without hing a dinger, their longest drought of the season. D.J. Wilson’s leadoff homer in the boom of the first inning in game two of a doubleheader on June 16 was the Birds’ last roundtripper, meaning the club’s homerless drought extends 117 innings and 18 days. FOUR IS A MAGIC NUMBER Thanks to a staff that ranks at or near the top of the Carolina League in nearly every single pitching category, the Pelicans do not necessarily need to score a plethora of runs to win games. Sure enough, when Myrtle Beach plates at least four tallies in a game, the Birds have a 30-8 (.789) record. This success has been exemplified of late; In the 59 games since May 11, the Pelicans have pitched well, posng a collecve 3.14 ERA (412.2 IP, 334 H, 7.3 H/9, 173 R, 144 ER). Myrtle Beach has scored at least four runs in 21 of those contests, and the Birds are 20-1 (.952) in those games. DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS Over the last five games, Myrtle Beach has surrendered just four runs, and while the club’s pitching has been excellent, they have only struck out 43 in 45.0 innings, meaning the club’s defense has had to be strong behind them. Over these last five games, the Pelicans have posted a defensive efficiency of .785 (152 AB, 26 H, 3 HR, 43 K, SF). To put things in perspecve, the Tampa Bay Rays lead Major League Baseball in defensive efficiency this season at .733. ABOUT ERICK-Originally signed by the Diamondbacks in 2011, Leal was sent by Arizona along with RHP Jesus Castillo to the Cubs on February 18, 2013 in exchange for OF Tony Campana.

-In a start on August 4, 2015 for Kane County, then the Low-A affiliate of the Cubs, Leal threw a nine-inning no-hitter, but received a no-decision, as the Cougars took 12 innings to beat South Bend 1-0. Leal did not allow a baserunner until there was one out in the fifth, issuing his only walk of the evening.

2018 SEASON-Leal was assigned to Myrtle Beach on May 23 from Extended Spring Training. The right-hander has made three starts, yielding three runs on seven hits in 11.0 innings (3 BB, 10 K). He has also appeared in six games out of the bullpen, firing 10.1 scoreless innings (6 H, 3 BB, 6 K).

-Leal picked up his second career save - and his first since pitching with the Rookie-level Mesa Cubs on July 2, 2013 - with 1.2 shutout innings on June 24, 2018 at Lynchburg.

2017 SEASON-Leal missed the 2017 season with a right elbow injury.

2016 SEASON-Leal was placed on the DL on July 21 and missed 32 games. Before returning to Myrtle Beach on August 24, he made two rehab appearances with Rookie-level Mesa, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings. In three outings after coming off the DL with Myrtle Beach, Leal gave up six runs, five earned, on 12 hits in 8.1 innings (5.40 ERA, 6 K, 4 BB).

-Before going on the DL, had allowed three earned runs or less in 12 consecutive starts dating back to May 7. Over that span, Leal was 8-2 with a 2.33 ERA (25 R, 18 ER in 69.2 IP). Leal whiffed 49 against 10 walks, reaching at least the fifth inning in all but one of those 12 starts.

-For the second straight year, Leal showed reverse platoon splits. Lefties had a .606 OPS against him in 189 at-bats, compared to a .712 OPS for righties in 174 at-bats.

2015 SEASON-After an up-and-down first half (4.96 ERA in 61.2 IP, 79 H, 20 BB, 41 K), Leal was tremendous down the stretch of the season, registering a 2.82 ERA in 11 second-half starts spanning 67.2 frames. During that stretch, he gave up 59 hits, walked 12 and fanned 45.

-Had a reverse platoon split, limiting lefties to a .244/.314/.383 line, whereas righties slashed .293/.335/.424.

2014 SEASON-Leal led Short Season Class A Boise in innings pitched (62.2) and wins (6).

-The right-hander continued to get better as the campaign went along. He posted an 8.44 ERA in June, a 3.42 mark in July and then a 2.22 ERA in August.

ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES-In 2013, Leal posted a 2.07 GO/AO ratio for the Mesa Cubs. He followed up a 5.06 ERA in July with a 1.99 mark in August.

-Again held a reverse platoon split in 2013, with righties hitting .281/.320/.688 against him, and lefties compiling a .234/.268/.338 line.

-Dominated both righties and lefties in a brilliant 2012, with the former recording a .571 OPS and the latter registering a .566 mark.
