Dear Editor,I refer to the letter to the
editor from Tom O’Neil,Langley Meadows pointing outthe fact that anyone visitingthe Emergency Department atLangley Memorial Hospital mustpay a ghastly $4.25 per hourto park outside the EmergencyDepartment entrance [HospitalER parking fees diabolical, July2, Langley Advance].I, and no doubt many others,
have had this ridiculous experi-ence when attempting to pro-cure expedient and possiblylife-threatening care at our hos-pital.Earlier this year, I drove to
LMH to receive urgent care and,having to leave my home expedi-ently, I did not have cash or acredit card with which to pay forparking outside the ER.I exited the ER following treat-
ment to find a ticket on my car
displaying a fine of $50 or $80 ifthe ticket was not paid within somany days.A second visit some weeks
later, again requiring immediateattention, was rewarded withanother ticket (I had enoughcash to pay for the initial hourand I did not at that time own acredit card). The parking attend-ant argued he could not retractthe ticket no matter what thereason was for the person park-ing there, once it was issued.Parking for easy and rapid
access to the ER should be freeof charge.When the patient reports in to
the ER he could give his licencenumber which could then bepassed on to the lot attendant.This would eliminate those whohad parked there to use anotherpart of the hospital with theintention of procuring free park-ing.
Peace Arch Hospital has anumber of no charge park-ing spots for those using theEmergency department withmaximum times posted clearly.Hospitals receive a good por-
tion of the parking fees receivedyearly and this money is usedto provide much needed equip-ment. That’s a plus but not asolution.Hospital staff throw up their
hands when rebuked by iratepatients saying, “the hospitaldoesn’t look after the parking…it’s run by ImPark!”.Someone must take the
responsibility for providing park-ing at no charge for patients inneed. The problem will persistsif nothing is done to rectify thissituation and the private parkingcompanies will continue to reapthe monitory benefits at the tax-payers’ expense.

stand why the City ofSurrey is insisting onLRT instead of SkyTrainextension to Langleyand Newton.LRT will increase
congestion on alreadycongested streets.SkyTrain will encour-
age thousands of
drivers to leave theircars. That will increasefare revenue for theTransLink.SkyTrain saves travel
time.The value of
time-savings and addi-tional revenue is worthbillions of dollars as therapid transit systemslast for a long time.
Thus SkyTrain systemis much cheaper thanLRT.The Paris and London
underground systemsare about 150 years old.Even Toronto’s is about50 years old.By reducing the num-
ber of cars on the road,the SkyTrain will alsohelp the environment.
All other cities inMetro have SkyTrainsystems.Even the Broadway-
UBC link is being pro-posed as a SkyTrain orSubway line.Why does the Surrey
mayor wants to buildLRT for the citizensof Surrey? What is thelogic behind this?The residents of
Vancouver, Burnabyand Coquitlam haveSkyTrain lines.Why should the cit-
izens of Surrey haveLRT, which is muchless efficient systemthan the SkyTrain?I urge people of
Surrey and Langley topay attention to thisimportant matter andwrite to the mayor ofSurrey.

ads has arrived on television and inthe mail.A cheque of $2,460 made out to
“Mom and Dad” adorns the cover ofour MP’s ad mail, which the taxpay-ers of Canada paid for.What’s notable is the deception of
what is not mentioned. These UCCBpayments are fully taxable, at ratesbetween 20 and 45 per cent here inB.C.
Furthermore, the child amountdeduction of $2,255 per child hasbeen eliminated on the 2015 personaltax return.That will cost each and every par-
ent $451 in additional taxes for everychild.So, Mom and Dad, you’d better not
spend that new “benefit” becauseyou’ll have to pay back most of itnext April when you file your taxes.

The Urban Church has added more fun activ-ites to its annual free summer event on July 19.For the past four years the organizers have
hosted hundreds of kids, rain or shine, for anafternoon of fun.“Grab the neighbourhood gang, your family
and friends and head on over for some crazyfun,” said pastor Andrew Yackel.Back this year will be the life-size Angry Birds
arcade game. There will also be a giant slip andslide, water games, relays and a dunk tank.Kids can take part in the colouring contest
with prizes for three ages groups (winners get amovie package. Urban Church’s regular servicesare at Colossus Theatre.)The Sunday afternoon fun also includes a
watermelon eating contest.
There’s crafts, bouncy structures, water bal-loons and even some free treats. Many of theinventive games are crafted by the volunteers.“Hosting a community party like this is a way

of our favouritehomemade barbe-cue sauces that weuse all the time.Keep in mind that
barbecue sauces arenot marinades, theyare a finishing sauceonly. If appliedto the meat at thebeginning of (or tooearly on during)the grilling process,the sugars in thesesauces will burn.Apply during the very last part of the cook-
ing process and close the lid of your barbe-cue to carmelize the sugars.
Bourbon BBQ Sauce
In a medium pot, combine the ketchup,bourbon, brown sugar, garlic, vinegar,Worcestershire, liquid smoke and the 1 tspsalt. Heat over medium-high heat until boil-ing, stirring constantly. Lower the heat tolow and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes,stirring occasionally. Set aside, off the heat,when done.

largest zucchini luge.“Well, it might be the
world’s only zucchiniluge,” Robinson joked.The 200-plus foot luge is

zucchini or corn cob car,”Robinson said. “We’rebranching out in the vege-table world. We’ve got
wheels and all the thingsfor decorating. Everythingis there, all we need is thecreative juices.”

They say even good things must come to anend and this is the case with almost 50 years ofPleasant Hours teas hosted by the Murrayvillesite of the United Churches of Langley.The final tea was held on June 23 in the
church hall according to Jean Gregson, a mem-ber of the church.“They were always in the church hall,” she
said of the afternoon activity designed to deliveractivity for those in care homes.
A Valentine’s party put together in February1967 by Daisy Holtby (the then minister’s wife)and Robena Rutherford was the first PleasantHours event. It was an outreach initiative bythe United Church Women’s group of what wasthen the Sharon United Church.Rutherford recognized the need for the month-
ly afternoon outing for rest home residents as away of offering recreation, entertainment, and asocial event.That first February tea was obviously a hit
because by September 1967 it was reported thatseven of the events had been held for care homeresidents.“A lot of the care homes didn’t have enter-
tainment for their guests and residents,” notedGregson of how the Pleasant Hours came to be.“But most now do. So it’s different now.”The fact that many care homes now offer a
full-range of activities contributed to the end ofthe church-run monthly Pleasant Hours.“Also, the Ministry of Health has asked that
any bus that transports people from care homeshave someone that could perform resuscitation,”she added. “It’s a reasonable expectation, but itwas just another thing to add to the list.”In addition to these reasons, Gregson said
most of the people helping to put the PleasantHours events together are retired and are gettingolder.“Working people are not available on a
Tuesday afternoon,” she said.In the past, while care homes didn’t have
entertainment programs, they also didn’t havebuses, so church volunteers would pick upresidents, bring them to the church hall, andreturn them to their homes after the event.Gregson’s mother, Doris Blair, was one of
those drivers. She participated in the events as avolunteer as long as she was able, then enjoyingthe teas into her 90s.It wasn’t just seniors who enjoyed the events
filled with singing, dancing costume parties,meeting live animals, and more. Guests includedthose in assisted living facilities due to physicalor mental challenges.“So younger people were there as well,”
Gregson said. “They really appreciated the out-ing.”Volunteers may have been working at the
events, but as Gregson points out, they enjoyedthe entertainment aswell.“There are mem-
ories of hearingJoan Danby singaccompanied byDonna McTaggart,the appearance ofSanta Claus (KenMallinson) at the annual Christmas turkey din-ner held every December, Peggy McGregor’scostumes at the Halloween teas, Highland dan-cers, singing groups, live animals such as lambs,and much more,” she said.Refreshments were part of the teas, too, with
a monthly birthday cake and card to honourthose who celebrated a birthday that month.Gregson noted that Shirley McGonigal has
been a “tireless worker” for the Pleasant Hours.She listed many other individuals who havetaken part in the long-term success of the eventsover the past half century: Betty Lou Chell,Ellen Mufford, Althea Plowe, Bertha Alexander,Flo Riddall, Mildred Berry, Angie Barron, KathyBurchill, Jean Beard, Francis Bishop, RoseLembke, Audrey Spiegel, Robena Rutherford,Marilyn Packham, Lynda Christensen, EdieThompson, Nancy Mallinson, Carol Tauber,Marlene Aylen, Joyce McHugh, Bob Baker,Charlie Bishop, Doris Blair, Dick Chell, KenMallinson, John McGregor, Allan McLeod, HarryMcTaggart, Peter Skeates, Arnold Aylen, WayneMarkel, Fred and Bev Rodrigo, Joanne Skeates,and other members of specific church units andcommittees.The end of the Pleasant Hours was a diffi-
cult decision for the United Churches of theLangleys. Gregson said it is a bittersweet end-ing.“There are new projects that are being
planned,” she said.

Win orlose, it was an opportunity togo somewhere, because a lotof people don’t get a chanceto do something like that –to go overseas and compete.That was fun. was right on target on the World Fast DrawAssociation (WFDA) circuit this past year.Last month, Karen Robinson received the
all-around top gun of 2014 buckle award forher fast gun handling, and did so at 69 yearsof age.Robinson joined WFDA chairman Dan
Qualls, who accomplished this same feat inthe men’s division.The 2015 WFDA banquet coincided with
the World Traditional Index contest inMountain View, Arkansas, where the top15 men’s buckles and top seven women’sbuckles (and shooters’ ratings for 2015) wereannounced.There are three more WFDA-sanctioned
events on the fast draw circuit, with the verynext one being held at Aldergrove AthleticPark July 18 and 19.The World Open Index Championships is
faster than traditional, allowing for faster hol-sters and draw styles, but the onus on hitsis the same for both styles of shooting. Thepenalty for a missed target with both eventsis one second, which is clocked by modernelectronics devices calibrated to one-thou-sandths of a second.Shooters wear western attire, and come
