Pilots flocked to Langley on Saturday. by Matthew Claxton [email protected] Pilots from around B.C., Alberta, and the United States converged on Langley Saturday for the annual Fly In hosted by the Langley Aero Club. A total of 86 pilots in a wide variety of personal aircraft landed at the Langley Regional Airport for a day of seminars and socializing. Pilots came from as far away as High River, Alta., Prince George, Campbell River, Williams Lake, and Washington State. There would have been more, had it not been for a bit of bad luck on Saturday mor- ning, said Aero Club chair Ken Wardstrom. Bad weather near Hope prevented several pilots from the Okanagan from flying down. The Fly In allows pilots to take part in a number of safety seminars, to learn about new NavCan and Transport Canada regula- tions, and to browse booths set up by air- craft supply vendors, said Wardstrom. In addition, many pilots make a weekend of it, coming down on Friday and spend- ing the whole weekend in Langley. Local members helped their guests find the local casino, as well as golf courses and wineries. “The Canadian Museum of Flight is always a big hit,” Wardstrom said. The entire event is organized by the aero club’s members. “It’s all volunteers,” said Wardstrom. Of the more than 100 members in the club, more than 70 came out to volunteer their time on the weekend, he said. The airport’s management also supports the event, making sure the grass runway is mowed, and working with the control tower to handle the extra traffic. Airport manager George Miller said the annual Fly In is good promotion for the air- port itself, and it helps keep the recreational pilot community well informed. Safety and the use of Lower Mainland air- space is a key factor in the seminars. “That is always a big concern to us,” Miller said. He said the confined airspace above the Lower Mainland means there is a lot to know. The Fly Ins help keep visitors to the Langley airport up-to-date on proper proced- ures, good radio protocols, and the rules for flying in to the airport itself. While the Langley airport has a lot of businesses based on helicopter mainten- ance and repair, the Fly In is focused on the fixed-wing aircraft community – mostly the recreational pilots. Police were called to the 8100 block of 272nd Street at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. “Sadly, Langley RCMP is investigating their second fatality resulting from a motor vehicle collision for 2010,” said Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks. Witnesses advised that two teen boys, nei- ther old enough to drive, were travelling on motorcycles southbound in the 8100 block 272nd Street. The first boy, 15, successfully navigated some curves in the road, Marks said. The second boy, just 14 years old, appears to have veered over the line on the curves. He collided with a truck and camper com- bination heading north. The boy’s name had not been released prior to press deadline on Monday. Marks said that the bike appears to have been a licensed vehicle, and the boy was wearing a helmet, but it did not save him. Victim services helped out as RCMP officers spoke to witnesses at the scene, and talked to the victim’s family. The crash was almost identical to the other fatal accident earlier this spring, in which a motorcyclist was navigating a steep and curv- ing hill near Fort Langley when he struck another vehicle. In that case, the 51-year-old rider from Coquitlam was experienced, but was taking a new bike out for its first spin. In this case, the riders were too young to have been on the public roads at all. An RCMP integrated crash analyst reconstruction team was called out, and 272nd Street, from 80th Avenue and north towards the river (88th Avenue) was closed down for some time for the investiga- tion. There are many area events onJuly 1, where locals can go todemonstrate their national pride.by Roxanne [email protected]

Those Langleyites anxious to pub-licly demonstrate their patriotism thisCanada Day, have an oodle of oppor-tunities.

Where else in this country canyou pick between such an wealthof Canada Day festivities, all withinsuch close proximity?

For instance, the village of FortLangley comes alive with family funfor Canada Day. Similarly, there aretwo days of events and activities atMcLeod Athletic Park (MAP), runningJune 30 and July 1.

There’s also a huge July 1 bashagain at the Cloverdale MillenniumAmphitheatre, located at 176th Street& 64th Avenue. This event is expect-ed to draw 100,000 people for liveentertainment (including Ridley Bent, the Odds, Honeymoon Suite, andJessie Farell), as well as amusementrides, and a strawberry tea.

And even the Royal CanadianLegion in Aldergrove is holding afamily-oriented country fair, noon to4 p.m., with games, races, balloonartists, and food. An adult-only dance

runs 3 to 7 p.m. featuring Homebrew.“Just when you thought you

wouldn’t wear your Canada gear youbought for the Olympics again soon,it’s time to put it on to celebrate July1st in Fort Langley,” said the village’snew BIA executive director ShirleyStewart.

Once again Fort Langley NationalHistoric Site, Langley CentennialMuseum, the BC Farm Machinery andAgricultural Museum, and the historicCN Station offer free admission toevents going on throughout the day.

For instance, festivities kick off atthe fort at 9 a.m. with a pancakebreakfast by the Fort Langley LionsClub ($5 adults/$3 children).

There will be entertainment andartisan displays set up at fort all day,as well as regular guided tours. Abirthday cake will be served up atabout noon, followed by the citizen-ship court at about 12:30 p.m.

The nearby centennial museumwill also have displays, crafts for kidsfrom 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and anotherbirthday cake at 1 p.m.

“You know it’s a big party whenthere’s two cakes,” Stewart said.

Next door, at the farm museum, admission is by donation from 10a.m. to 4 p.m., with a children’sscavenger hunt and a miniature horseexhibit added to the existing pioneermemorabilia on display.

For more about happenings in the

village, visit: www.fortlangley.com.In the meantime, at MAP, organ-

izers are gearing up for the 15th con-secutive Langley Canada Day party.

The 2010 bash, apparently now oneof the largest Canada Day, celebra-tions in the province, kicks off at 3p.m. Wednesday, June 30. Festivitiesincluding kids rides and games, vend-ors, demonstrations, live entertain-ment, and nightly fireworks.

This event will also debut the Keepthe Pride Alive song (by Langley’sown Cole Armour and GemmaMartini) as well as a flash-mob dancewith upwards of 1,000 dancers perp-forming both nights at 9 p.m. andafter the opening ceremonies on July1, at about 3 p.m.

A new high school grad takes on aninternational role.by Heather [email protected]

Walnut Grove’s Matt Williams justgraduated from high school and alreadyhas a position lined up for the next fiveyears that will see him rubbing shoulderswith the likes of California’s first ladyMaria Kennedy Shriver, and Olympicmedalists Nadia Comaneci and BartConnor.

The 18-year-old just returned fromthe Special Olympics Global AthletesCongress in Marakesh, Morocco wherethose attending votedhim, out of the groupof eight nominees, tobe the global ambas-sador.

That means that forthe next five years, hewill travel the globeto liaise with SpecialOlympians and reportto the internationalboard of Special O.

“That was a verybig deal for me,” he said.

As well Williams is a Special Olympicsglobal messenger, one of a small groupwho speak internationally about theirexperiences with the organization. It’s afour-year gig. He heads to Washington,D.C. in September for a meeting on this.

Williams, who was chosen to carry the2010 Olympic torch with California Gov.Arnold Schwarzenegger in February, washonoured to be chosen an ambassador, and while nervous, is also excited.

There will be lots of travelling butlike the trip to Marakesh June 6-10, willexpose the gregarious young man to newcultures and new ways of thinking.

He knows, for example, he’ll be calledupon to travel to places in the worldwhere the developmentally challenged areisolated from society or where religion, and not medicine or science, colours

people’s perceptions of the disabled.“They have so much to give,” he said of

Special Olympians. He expects to face poverty and places

where life is more difficult.“I think I’m going to see… how lucky

we are,” he said.Williams said Canada and Langley have

resources for athletics, venues, and coach-ing. That’s not the case elsewhere so hisreports to the international board willinclude financial, cultural and humanitar-ian components.

While the job means amending hisplans to go to school to become a per-sonal trainer and nutritionist, he’s excitedabout this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

He’ll try to fit post-secondary, athlet-ics and even his jobat a local restaurantin around his inter-national duties.

“This is what I feltlike I’d really like todo,” he said.

Williams took upSpecial Olympicsaround Grade 7 whenhe found he was hav-ing trouble makingfriends.

“It raised my confidence level in a bigway,” he said.

He competes in floor hockey, curling, speedskating, swimming and track andfield (100 metre, 200m and 400m sprints)and heads to the nationals in Ontario inJuly. Williams likes the competitivenessof sports and the inclusiveness of SpecialO – “They don’t take the fun out of it,”he said.

Williams is encouraging people in thecommunity to become involved with theLangley group, which now offers morethan a dozen different sports as well asprograms for kids as young as toddlers.

Contact Dick Jennens, 604-533-4364, orAngela D’Agostino, 604-530-8792, to findout more or to join the fun.

“We need a lot more volunteers,” henoted. “That’s been the hard thing for uswith our growing number of athletes.”

Our View

G20 failed todeliver much

Aside from the fake lake – I think wecan all agree that the fake lake is worthevery penny – did we get any value at allfrom the weekend’s G20 and G8 summits?

Well, those who like to dress in blackmasks and smash windows certainlyachieved their heart’s desires.

What about the world leaders? Well, they may have enjoyed their photo opagainst the (fake) backdrop of the Torontoskyline. But their agreement is a hollowone. Reducing deficits and cutting debtmay be a worthwhile goal, but the agree-ment is voluntary, unenforceable, andriddled with exceptions. Worse, few ques-tions were raised about the human costsof the age of austerity world leaders wantto usher in.

What about the protesters outside theGreat Wall of Toronto?

Well, aside from the window-smash-ers, they also left disappointed. Manywere arrested for the nefarious crime ofBeing Near Actual Goons, some were teargassed, others simply got damp. Not oneof them ever got within earshot of theworld leaders, and the media generallyignored their messages to focus on thevandalism, the riot squads, and breakingnews from the World Cup.

The police were not served well by theexercise either. Depending on your pointof view, they either held back too much, allowing a good portion of Queen Streetto be smashed up, or they overreacted, arresting more than 900 mostly-inno-cent people in the largest mass arrests inCanadian history.

Canada, through taxes, spent billionsto wine and dine world leaders, to butterup the international media, and to keepthe riffraff at bay. Perhaps the next worldsummit should be held via videoconfer-ence instead.

We could even send everyone ascreensaver image of real Canadian lake.

As I crept through my veggie garden witha flashlight, preparing to pounce yet again,I couldn’t help but compare the slugs I washunting to the politicians and other ne’er-do-wells at the G-(insert your favourite numberhere) Summit in Toronto.

It may be a bit unfair to the slugs… but con-sider some of the similarities.

They’re slimy and have no spines, andthey’ve grown fat on the avails of our mostproductive efforts.

Just like the slugs. They contort themselves into

whatever shape suits them at thepresent moment – and the presentmoment is all that matters to them.

At least when it comes to slugs, the contortions aren’t metaphor-ical – slugs are refreshingly honestabout their weasel ways.

Some G-Summit politicians, likesome slugs, will come out in the light of day– when it suits them – but most prefer crawl-ing about in dark corners, slipping into cracksand hiding from anything that may shed lighton their existence.

Interestingly, I found many of the fattestslugs lounging about the Fake Lakes thatDonna and I built for birds that patrol our gar-den for lesser pests.

There are, however, significant differencesbetween our slithering guests and the slugsthat visit our gardens at night.

For instance, slugs can arise in such largenumbers that the destruction they cause isnothing short of awesome. Politicians at aG-Summit wreak such havoc as a matter ofcourse. No one is awed by the damage theycause – only by what survives their onslaught.

And slugs can help decompose compost,so they are theoretically, at least, capable of

accomplishing something positive.Like the steel fences and barbed wire

deployed in Toronto, Donna and I knit a secur-ity perimeter of copper strips and wool aroundthe most vulnerable areas of our garden. Slugssupposedly avoid copper, as it reacts withtheir slippery slime and gives them an elec-trical shock – although I say “supposedly,”because one night I found a particularly largeslug happily traipsing along the length of thecopper-wool barrier I thought was protectingour radishes.

Between the copper wool, saucers of beer, slug bait (for those less cautious about birdsand pets – or perhaps because they havegrown more frustrated), and midnight stalk-ings, gardeners throughout the Fraser Valleyvoluntarily spend huge resources in efforts toprotect ourselves from the ravages of slugs.

Meanwhile, nobody asked usfor our contributions to the bil-lion dollars spent on G8/G20security. They just took it fromus and spent it… although I’dhave gladly tossed my fair shareof coin into the pot if the secur-ity effort were aimed at protect-ing us from the summit leaders, instead of the other way around.

Getting back to the similarities: slugs andpoliticians are both non-irradicable – regard-less of what methods you use, no matter hardyou work at it, or how often you employ yourbest personal strategies to clear yourself of thepestilence, you’ll never be rid of them all.

In one particularly productive night, I slewmore than 200 slugs. At least a quarter ofthem were big and fat enough to have beenmistaken for G8 leaders, and many more couldeasily have sat themselves down in G20 chairs.

And the next night, there were dozens more– one was so brazen and arrogant and puffed-up that I nicknamed him Harper… before hap-pily dispatching him.

They just keep coming and coming…And the G-Summiters have learned to move

more quickly than the slugs.Visit Bob Groeneveld’s blog, Editor’s Notes, at http://tiny.cc/v7b94

Dear Editor,There was no difficulty

with the public hearing overthe rezoning applicationthat took four days, and itwas no verbal “slugfest”[Public hearing difficulties,June 25 Opinion, LangleyAdvance].

Public hearings aremandated by the LocalGovernment Act “for thepurpose of allowing thepublic to make representa-tions to the local govern-ment,” and all personswho believe it is in theirinterest must be afforded areasonable opportunity tobe heard. The hearings didthat, although holding thehearing in the civic facilityrather than in Fort Langleyprevented many Fort resi-dents from attending.

There is every reasonto believe that the oppos-ition to the zoning changereflects the opinion of anoverwhelming majority ofthose of us concerned with

the appropriate develop-ment of a very unique prop-erty in Fort Langley.

Michael O’Brien, Fort Langley

Proponents insultedDear Editor,

Fort Langley has spoken…or so say those who haveappointed themselves asrepresentatives.

The meeting I attendedincluded people speaking onthe Bedford Landing issuefrom the neighbourhoods ofTall Timbers, Langley City,Port Kells, and even theCloverdale area of Surrey.

Only a small handful ofpeople spoke in support ofcompleting the neighbour-hood, while the vast major-ity were opposed and angry.

Perhaps it is that angerthat kept people who mayhave wished to speak infavour silent?

Mr. Deacon [Fort spokefor more consultation, June25 Letters, Langley Advance]pointed out that a woman

who spoke in favour waslaughed at, and on June21, derisive comments weremade to someone else whospoke in favour. Publicspeaking is difficult formost people in the best ofcircumstances, and the ideathat you may be heckled orridiculed when you speak ismore than enough to silencemost people.

The opposition wasimpressive: a well-oiled,finely tuned, political actiongroup. There is nothingwrong with that, either; thisis a democratic country andpeople are free to presenttheir views however suitsthem best. But they can stillnot claim to speak for theentire Township.

The idea that we are abunch of rubes who spenthundreds of thousandsof dollars or more onhomes without realizingthat we were dealing withunscrupulous, misleading, money grubbers is insult-ing, as is the idea that it isonly through the wisdomand guidance of thosewho stand in opposition toParkLane Homes that wenow see the light!

Art, history at coreDear Editor,

Fort Langley

Boat noise uncomfortableDear Editor,

I moved to Fort Langley from the “big city” in hopes of aquieter environment. I was aware of the trains and the day-tripper motorcycles and was prepared for the noise associ-ated with that.

What I wasn’t expecting was the incredibly loud powerboats and motorcycles in the wee hours of the morning.

I can understand the appeal of powerboats and motor-cycles; my husband and I had a drag/ski boat at one timeand he has a motorcycle now.

What I can’t understand is the need to crank thosepowerful, big engines up so that the noise they producemakes the train sound like a kitten purring, in comparison.

Boaters and bikers should be considerate of their neigh-bours and our guests staying in the campgrounds, and keepthe noise down, especially late at night.

M. Brooks, Fort Langley

Dear Editor,The recent announcement that schools

superintendent Cheryle Beaumont’s con-tract has been renewed for three years[Superintendent’s contract renewed, June25, Langley Advance] has my heart aching forthe children of Langley School District.

Although cuts in Reading Recovery, coun-selling services, and teacher assistant sup-port do not directly affect my children, I amdeeply concerned for the children who needthose services.

Cuts to these services will affect allchildren. With less support for vulnerablechildren, there will be a ripple effect withinthe classroom. When children’s needs arenot being met, disruptive behaviours ensue, and this will affect the learning of all chil-dren within the classroom.

Consider this a call to action. It is timefor Langley parents to raise their voices andspeak for the children of Langley who can-not speak for themselves.

It is time to collectively start voicing ourconcerns, questions and solutions. We mustdemand what is right for our children.

The challenges that this district faces aredirect results of poor management, bad

decisions, and inadequate leadership. Thevery last thing that Langley needs is to con-tinue down this same path.

This is by no means “a slur or attack ona school district employee.” This is aboutprofessional accountability. This is aboutintegrity. This is about leadership.

I hope that this bad decision is enough tomake more people take notice of the diresituation that the children of Langley SchoolDistrict are in.

The children are paying the price for themistakes of the current senior management. All children will be affected, directly orindirectly, by the cuts that are being made.

The future of education in Langley is atgreat risk under guidance of these electedofficials who are supposed to be makingdecisions on behalf of their constituents.

I hope that all voters remember theseirresponsible decisions come election time.

Plans for the Jericho sub-neighbourhood in Willoughbyare back in the hands ofTownship staff.by Bob [email protected]

Praise and concerns expressed

by residents at the June 14 publichearing in to the Jericho sub-neigh-bourhood plan led Township coun-cil to refer the proposal back toits staff for further review a weeklater.

Of particular concern to someresidents – and some councillors– were parking issues related tothe area, which includes both theeast and west side of 200th Street

immediately south of 80th Avenue, and surrounds the Langley EventsCentre.

The neighbourhood is to includea dense mix of commercial andresidential projects, including somecondo towers, potentially up to 20storeys tall.

A seniors housing project and acommunity garden are also part ofthe plans.

Langley Township

Willoughby concerns being revisited

A helmeted bicycle rider survivedbeing flung through the windowof a parked car.by Matthew [email protected]

A teenaged boy who crashedthrough the windshield of a parkedcar in Walnut Grove last week isexpected to make a full recovery.

The boy and some friends wereriding near the corner of 216thStreet and 94A Avenue, said Cpl.Holly Marks of the Langley RCMP.

The riders were riding close to thecurb most of the time, veering outto go around parked cars.

The boy apparently shoulderchecked at the wrong momentand ran into the back of a parkedvehicle. He flew threw the window, head first.

Because he suffered a head injury, the boy was taken to hospital via anair ambulance helicopter, but Markssaid he never lost consciousness.

The boy was wearing a helmet atthe time of the accident, Marks said.

Safety tips offeredEven before the crash involving a

young boy and a car’s rear window, the Langley RCMP were offeringsome bike safety tips for those tak-ing up riding this summer.

• Wear a helmet. Langley RCMP

will be out giving out $29 violationtickets in the next few months tothose not helmeted while cycling.

• Wear bright colours and/ormake sure there are reflectors onyour bike.

• Wear proper footwear, generallysneakers. Do not wear flip flops, sandals, or shoes with heels that canslip off pedals. Never ride pedals.

• Parents should discuss with theirchildren where it is safeto ride.

• Always ride with yourhands on the handlebars.

• Stop and check fortraffic in both directions, when leaving your drive-way, an alley, or a curb.

• Cross at intersec-tions. When you pull outbetween parked cars, driv-ers can’t see you coming.

• Walk your bike acrossbusy intersections usingthe crosswalk and follow-ing traffic signals.

• Ride on the right-hand side ofthe street, so you travel in the samedirection as cars. Never ride againsttraffic.

• Use bike lanes or designatedbike routes whenever you can.

A bicycle is the smallest vehicleon the road, noted Cpl. Holly Marks. It is the most vulnerable, and ridersmust take care to be visible and ridepredictably, to avoid being hit bycars or trucks.

Robbery suspect nabbedMore than a week ago, Craig

Dennis was listed as one of Langley’s“most wanted,” with Mounties hunt-ing for him in connection with anAldergrove attack.

On Friday, police confirmed thesuspect has been picked up, andsince released on his own recogni-zance pending his next court date at

the end of July.Dennis was the sub-

ject of a police searchlast week, after he andtwo other men in atruck allegedly accostedanother man, knockinghim down, and stealinghis cellphone.

The incident occurredoutside the Aldergrovecommunity policing officeon June 13. Less than12 hours later Langleyofficers had arrested two

suspects.Caylen Pelletier, 19, and Jason

Wallace, 21 were arrested atPelletier’s home, and face chargesof robbery, extortion and utteringthreats. Wallace also faces charges ofdangerous driving and robbery.

Municipal water is on its way to resi-dents of a Murrayville neighbourhood, and special precautions are being taken toprotect the natural environment and thecreatures that live in it.

Property owners on 38th Avenuebetween 224th and 228th Streets peti-tioned Langley Township to install muni-cipal water services in their area.

Council approved the Local AreaService request called for bids. SandpiperConstructing LLP is expecting to completethe project by the end of October.

As part of the project, the Townshipis installing a low-impact access roadbetween Old Yale Road and the 4100block of 228th Street, to provide mainten-ance access to the new water main.

The Township will work with a localenvironmental consultant and Fisheriesand Oceans Canada, removing as fewtrees as possible, to ensure wildlife habi-tat is disturbed as little as possible.

The technique used to install the pipewill also be different from usual, toreduce the impact on the natural areasof 228th Street. Instead of trenching, space for the pipe will be drilled horizon-tally underground, with the pipeline fedthrough afterwards.

The longest drilled section will run fromOld Yale Road south about 400 metresunderneath the 228th Street right-of-way,without disturbing the trees that housebald eagles in the area. Another section,216-metres long, will run under BestCreek.

Trenches will be dug along some of thedeveloped road segments along the way.

Construction will have some impacton traffic. As dates and information areconfirmed, public notices will be posted.Property owners directly benefiting fromthe new water services will receiveupdates from the Township’s engineeringdivision.

William Kent, 102, shares hisrecollections of life, and a bridge.by Pete McMartinCanwest News

That William Kent wrote me a let-ter rather than an email might pro-vide a clue about his age.

He is 102.He wrote to say that he had read a

column I did on the dedication of theLions Gate Bridge as a national his-toric site, and that if he had knownabout it, he would have been there, too. He had been an engineer on thebridge.

“I was an engineer with StuartCameron & Company Ltd. that hadthe contract for the foundation anddeck, including the Lions [statues].”

We visited Kent in his Langleyhome. Great age had not seemedto affect him much: he greeted usat the front door, and he was lucid, mobile and in good health.

His memory was intact.“I was born on Oct. 19, 1907, in

Content, Alta., which was about 40miles east of Red Deer. It’s no longerthere. At that time, before the rail-way, there was only a wagon trailbetween Edmonton and Calgary, andmy dad ran a livery stable and mymom ran a stopping house. Therewere stopping houses every 20 or 30miles, and they were places whereyou could get a meal. I was bornin that stopping house. My parentswere there from 1903 to 1913. Theywere the last of the pioneers.”

The railroad arrived and ended

the need for livery stables and stop-ping houses. The family moved toEdmonton at the insistence of Kent’smother. She wanted him to go to thenew University of Alberta there andbecome an engineer.

“She knew that I liked to buildthings. I built asteam engine onceand started a fireunder it, and moth-er called me intosupper, and fortun-ately I obeyed, because when I cameout again, the steam engine was outin the middle of the road. That wasmy first lesson in safety valves: Ihadn’t made one.”

He graduated as a civil engineerin 1931, the beginning of the GreatDepression. He got part-time worksurveying for the Alberta govern-ment, and met Doris, his future wife. They got married in 1934 and spenttheir honeymoon in Vancouver.

“And never went back,” Kent said.Life was a struggle. He got work in

a placer mine upcountry, and workas a labourer. When the announce-ment was made in 1936 that a bridgewould be built to span the FirstNarrows, every engineer in WesternCanada applied for a job on it.

It was a stroke of luck that gothim one. He worked on the teamresponsible for the design and pour-ing of the two anchor piers, and forthe pouring and placing of the twoconcrete lions guarding the bridge’ssouthern approach.

When the bridge was completed,he was in the first car to go across it,to test the roadbed.

He would go on to other jobs, inevery province of Canada, workinguntil he retired at 65. He and Doriswould have three children, whowould have seven grandchildren, who would have seven great-grand-children. Doris died the day beforetheir 70th wedding anniversary.

Everyone askshim the secretof his longevity,Kent said, so wedidn’t. Instead,

we asked him if he was surprised tohave outlived his bridge, so far, by30 years.

“I’m still here,” he said, shrugging.– Pete McMartin is a columnist for The Vancouver Sun

Joe’s Soup Kitchen hasnow spawned anotheroutreach program forLangley’s homeless anddisadvantaged.

by Roxanne [email protected]

Out of one great idea, manyothers can flow.

Creation of the Saturdaydrop-in at St. Joseph’s Cath-

olic Church spawned from the verysuccessful Joe’s Soup Kitchen, whichserves up a hot meal every Tuesday.

Now, a third initiative, aimed athelping the community’s homeless andless fortunate get the help they need, istaking root.

The Saturday drop-ins started aboutthree years ago, drop-in coordinator Ki-ernan Hillan said, offering background.

And while food is served, Satur-day’s drop-in is deemed as more ofa social event hosted at St. Joseph’s,between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. everyweekend, Hillan explained.

Volunteers arrange for sandwiches, goodies, coffee, and juice to be served. That weekly gathering was alwaysintended to be more, Hillan explained.

It’s a safe place for typically 30-40of Langley’s homeless and disadvan-taged to come, a casual setting wherethey can get out of the elements, shareconversation and maybe even playsome cards.

“We really strive to make it more ofa social thing,” Hillan said.

A third drop-in outreach programwas launched just six weeks ago that is

intended to be more of a “get down tobusiness” type session.

Some of the same volunteers re-cently took on coordinating a Thurs-day drop-in at the downtown Langleychurch.

This inter-denominational event issupported by three churches in town[St. Joseph’s, Southgate, and Brook-swood Baptist] and runs 10 a.m. to 2p.m.

“To me, this is a unique outreachin Langley, because it is cooperative,”said Southgate Church’s representativeJanet Bennett said.

The concept came up one morningthis spring, she explained. And beforethe day was concluded, a new, weeklydrop-in centre in Langley was a reality.

“To me that speaks volumes aboutLangley,” Bennett said, applaudinghow caring and compas-sionate the people in thiscommunity can be andhow they rise to theoccasion when a needis made apparent.

While many thingsabout the new Thurs-day program are thesame as Saturday’s, Hillanexplained an important difference hasbeen the ability to have professionalcommunity outreach workers (whotraditionally are not working on Satur-days) on hand and available to talk.

Through the aid of social serviceprofessionals, this group of faith-basedvolunteers has already helped a num-ber of Langley’s disenfranchised findpermanent shelter, apply for identi-fication, create resumes, register foraddiction care, apply for disability orwelfare, or simply find some new socks

or a warm jacket.“This is truly a place where people

who want and need help can come. It’snot a feeding session, not a place forpeople to just hang out and socialize,”Hillan said.

But that said, he added, it’s allabout building relationships, and ifthat can be done over a sandwich anda game of cards in a safe environment, all the better.

Three of the community’s disen-franchised attended the first Thursdaydrop-in. But that number has alreadygrown to more than 25 each week.

It’s not about numbers, emphasizedBrookswood Baptist’s representativeBill Strain. But it’s proving effective.

“It’s doing the job it was meant todo,” Strain said. “If we can help themand guide them through the process,

sometimes that’s allthey need… It hashad a lot of suc-cess already movingpeople the first stepup.”

Hillan believespart of the success isa promise of friend-

ship without preach-ing, and he’s convinced the drop-inconcept will grow.

Ultimately, he said, his goal is tocreate a permanent drop-in centre– what he describes as a first stop forLangley’s homeless before they reacha facility such as the new Gateway ofHope.

For more information about thedrop-in sessions, or to volunteer forthe Saturday sessions, leave a mes-sage for Kiernan Hillan at St. Joseph’sCatholic Church, 604-534-3303.

Continually playing catch-upisn’t conducive to sports suc-cess.

For the Langley Thunder, falling behind in recent gameshas been especially detrimentalas they pass the midwaypoint of the Western LacrosseAssociation season.

The Thunder faced deficitsduring back-to-back road gamesversus the Victoria Shamrocksand Nanaimo Timbermen thispast weekend, and ended uplosing both of them.

Powered by a first periodin which they out-scored theThunder 8-4, the Shamrocksled 10-6 heading into the finalframe of Friday’s contest atBear Mountain Arena.

The Victoria hosts glidedinto cruise control from there, exchanging four goals apiecewith the Thunder over the final20 minutes in a 14-10 victory.

The Thunder’s Kyle McEwenand Kyle Belton scored thefinal two goals of the game to

make the score look respectable.Alex Turner scored twice andadded three assists in a losingeffort for the Thunder. Langley’sJoel McCready scored a pair.

Saturday in Nanaimo, theTimbermen scored six second-period goals to the Thunder’sthree, and carried a 8-4 lead intothe third period.

And while the Thunder out-scored the Timbermen 5-3 inthe third period, the closest theywould come was a goal (10-9)before Nanaimo tallied an emptynet marker with 44 secondsremaining in the game.

The 11-9 loss to Nanaimodropped the Thunder’s record to3-7, as they assume sole occu-

pancy of the WLA basement.McCready led Langley’s attack

with a hat trick and two assists.Chock full of young talent,

and coming off their first win-ning season and playoff appear-ance since arriving in Langley in2004, the Thunder have fallenoff the rails.

They finished 10-7 in 2009,good for third place in theWLA’s regular season standings. Now, the Thunder face the nearimpossible task of having to winseven of their final eight gamesto equal last year’s win total.

Next up for the Thunder: theBurnaby Lakers Wednesdayat the Langley Events Centre.Game time is 7:45 p.m.

B.C. ended the IBL regular season on a10-game unbeaten streak.by Troy [email protected]

The B.C. Titans continue to sizzle as theyget ready for the International BasketballLeague playoff tournament, which startsCanada Day (Thursday).

The Titans shellacked the visiting OlympiaReign this past weekend, winning by lopsidedscores Saturday and Sunday at the LangleyEvents Centre.

“Just a great showing of thedepth of our team,” Titanshead coach Scott Allen said.“The distribution of the ballhas been fantastic. There hasbeen no selfishness. The guysare giving the ball up andlooking for the best high-per-centage shot.”

The weekend wins extendthe Titans’ unbeaten streak to10 games, and improved their record to 15-7to close out the regular season.

On Sunday, the Titans capped their cam-paign with a 133-93 thumping of the Reign.

Six Titans hit double digits in scor-ing, including Randy Nohr (22 points),Lawrence Blackledge (21 points to go with14 rebounds), Josh Washington (20 points),Terrence Hundley and Casey Archibald (15points apiece), and Chad Troyer (13 points).

Galen Young had a big day under the glass, collecting a team-high 15 rebounds.

The Titans opened the weekend seriesSaturday by out-scoring the Reign 147-109.

Marshall, Washington, and Troyer had pro-lific nights with 28, 26, and 25 points, respect-ively.

They led a B.C. attack that saw seven Titanstally 10 points or better.

Heading into the IBL tournament at WarnerPacific College in Portland, the Langley-basedTitans are brimming with confidence.

“We’ve earned the [confident] feelingthrough our style of play, and again througheverybody being equal contributors,” Allen

said. “Every game, we feel wehave a great opportunity to win.”

Allen said the team has been amodel of class, and the envy ofsome other teams in the league.

Now, the Titans’ confidence hasto spill over into the IBL’s tourna-ment finale.

“I think we’re about as good aswe’re going to get. These guys arepros and will do what it takes,”

Allen said. “Match-ups are key at this level. We need to expose our strengths and negateour weaknesses, and we’ll have great chanceof winning.”

The IBL season ends Wednesday, so theTitans’ first playoff opponent was yet to bedetermined at press time. In their inauguralyear, the Titans were knocked out of the ’09IBL tournament in the opening round, afterlosing 123-106 to the Snohomish Explosion.

Weekly ReportWeekly Report

Aspiring journalists or thosewho simply love sports takenote: there are sports reporterpositions available at the tips ofyour fingers.

by Troy [email protected]

Wanted: BC Summer Gamessports reporters

Required between July 22-25. Idealcandidates will be outgoing, hardworking, with a love for sports andfreelance writing, and be willing towork for the joy of volunteering.

For anyone who wants to givesports-writing a try, the Townshipof Langley BC Summer Games hasa job for you.

When the Games come toLangley, an army of volunteer writ-ers is needed to get the story out tonews agencies across B.C., Canada, and the world.

“This is an excellent opportunityfor volunteers to gain experiencewith a major function with prov-ince-wide exposure,” Games mediacentre chair and Langley Advanceeditor Bob Groeneveld said. “Forinstance, at the media centre weneed people who will have a chanceto write for newspapers and othermedia far beyond Langley.”

There are roughly two dozensports needing coverage.

Reporters will be assigned one ormore sports to cover and report on,at a particular sport venue duringthe Games.

The goal of the Games mediacentre is to provide a customizedstory to every community in B.C.,by being the eyes and ears for themedia at the upcoming Games.Reporters work to make the Gamesscores and results personal, interest-ing, and newsworthy.

All reporters need is a paper pad, pens and pencils, and a desire toget the stories out.

Athletes at the Games average

between 14 and 15 years of age,and sports range from athletics, tocycling, to lacrosse, to wrestling.

Groeneveld noted that those withaspirations to be reporters mightfind it useful to have their bylinespublished around B.C.

“Others might relish the oppor-tunity to help us promote specificsports they’re particularly inter-ested in,” he said. “They will havea chance to rub shoulders withsome of the province’s top athletes, maybe even interview someonewho is a future Olympian-in-the-making.”

He noted that a number of B.C.’stop Olympic athletes have been BCGames alumni, adding, “Imaginebeing able to say, ‘I knew him/herwhen…’”

Groeneveld emphasized that therewill be room for a wide range ofexperience levels, from profession-als to those with nothing more thana dream to exercise their buried

writing talents. He noted that some aspiring writ-

ers might enjoy the chance to workalongside professional writers, tohone their own skills.

The media centre will be justone of many areas where the BCSummer Games can provide specialopportunities to people who under-stand the value of volunteering,Groeneveld said.

“The whole experience shouldprove to be fun,” he said, “not justfor the volunteer reporters, but forall of the thousands of volunteerswho will be helping out in analmost limitless variety of capaci-ties.

“It’s a chance to be part of some-thing very big, and very worth-while.”

To volunteer as an individ-ual or as a group, go online to:www.2010bcsummergames.org, orcall the Games office at 604-881-2010 to register.

My size kind of dictated what positionI play (offensive line) but I’ve learned toreally love my role on the club and onthe offence.

As the centre I do get to touch the ballon every play,so it all startswith me.

Growing up, Iwas very closeto my father, and he was abig influence onme during timesI needed himmost. Pickingmy college, dealing withadversity, beingthe best personand player Ican be were aproduct of his

guidance and it’s one of the reasons Ilove taking part in our club’s communityprograms.

Among the programs I take part in,I would say Read, Write and Roar isamong my favourites because I’ve seenfirst hand what happens to a youngperson’s life when they grasp the abilityto read.

The benefits of literacy last a lifetimeand I take pride in knowing that I mightbe planting the seed for a future reader.

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles?

Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzlewill have you hookedfrom the moment yousquare off, so sharpenyour pencil and putyour Sudoku savvy

to the test!

Here's How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill eachrow, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numberswill appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
