creativity and inspiration certainly do not exist in a vacuum. Imaginations engage only after they have been filled with stimuli. Like a chugging and humming motor, our creative centres need a constant jolt of intellectual or emotional electricity to begin operating and to continue running smoothly. Inspiration and imagination are also like trees, stretching out to gather light energy to not only grow, but to flourish.

So it is with the Foundation. With a board consisting of a diverse group of dedicated individuals providing continual doses of inspiration, coupled with a far-reaching and generous phalanx of community partners and supporters, the Foundation does indeed operate, run smoothly, grow and flourish, and it is doing so, like never before.

As our tenth year draws to a close, the Foundation enters its second decade with renewed energy and purpose. While new projects are continually coming on stream, the old ones just get stronger and more established.

Signature fundraisers like the Grand Prix Gala and Foundation Golf

Tournament have become not-to-be-missed events that generate much-needed funds, and at the same time bring people together for joviality, socializing and philanthropy. And while the gala attracts the equestrian-minded and oenophiles among us, and the golf tournament caters to the golfers and duffers in our midst our NEW First Annual Film Festival pays homage to the cinema crowd, the artistes and those who enjoy everything from film noir to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

This edition of Student Success celebrates all of the above and much more! For instance, our cover story explores the explosive expansion of our Food For Thought Campaign – from Hungry Tummies, to Breakfast Clubs, to Backpacks. Our features include: Kindness Rocks, Leadership Programs, TEDx, Giftwrapping, Updates and a crazy Christmas Story. So sit back and enjoy. Do not put this mag down until you have read it from cover to cover. There will be a quiz. u

Take for example three twenty-something Kwantlen students who represent the oxymoron for their generation. They are business and entrepreneurial majors pursuing careers within the not-for-profit sector. And this is their story:

When Ryan Chem, Cara Bauder and Sandeep Singh Pawar heard that 3000 students in Langley were coming to school hungry every single day, they literally sprang into action with an ambitious plan to fight child hunger. It started out as a six-week course project but it quickly turned into a long-term commitment.

“Children need a healthy breakfast in order to learn, flourish and grow,” said Cara Bauder.

And with that in mind, the fourth year students founded Happy Tummies, a program providing a

students sought out for support, Happy Tummies has in just six weeks, provided more than 900 nutritious, interesting and substantial breakfasts to Parkside students.

Cara, Ryan and Sandeep continue to seek support and donations to sustain their program. If you would like to donate to the cause please make donations to the Langley School District Foundation/Happy Tummies Program by cheque or online at www.langleyschooldistrictfoundation.com. u

Here’s what the teachers are saying:

The problem of hunger and malnutrition leads to dozens of other problems. It has a snowball effect. Hungry students fall behind and they never really catch up.

Breakfast is clearly the answer. Not only are we feeding their physical needs, we’re feeding their emotional needs. The light turns on; they’re able to function in the classroom.

This is Canada. We have tons of food. There is no reason for children to come to school hungry.

hunger doesn’t just hurt kids. it hurts us all.

nutritious breakfast five days a week to students at Parkside Elementary in Aldergrove. The course demands that they develop and execute a viable business plan, run the project for six weeks, write a final report, submit it on December 13 and carry on with their careers. But the students do not want to stop. Their hope is to expand and enhance the program and keep it sustainable and ongoing.

“We live in such a fast-paced society that sometimes people forget there are children who need financial, family and educational support within their very own community,” said Chem.

Added Pawar, “We have million-dollar homes in the Lower Mainland, and on the other end of the spectrum, we have kids who go without food on a regular basis. That doesn’t make sense to me.”

With help from, the Surrey-based charity grocery store PricePro and the John Volken Academy who the

Kids helping Kidssecond annual clothing drive to support school snack programs

you know you’re having a good day when the firefighters come calling. As one of our greatest partners in our Food For Thought Campaign to help feed hungry students, the Township of Langley Firefighters Charity held their second annual Kids Helping Kids Clothing Drive in our schools. All proceeds from the sale of the collected clothes supports the snack programs in our schools. Currently the firefighters are delivering snacks to Wix-Brown, Parkside, Langley Meadows and Langley Secondary. And the school who collected the most clothes on a pound per student basis will be treated to a BBQ lunch at their site, put on by the firefighters who will arrive in their fire truck. And the winners are in third place - Dorothy Peacock; second place - Langley Meadows and FIRST goes to Willoughby. The total weight collected from all the schools who particpated was an incredible 15,000 pounds or 7.5 tons! u

we’ve got your backideas that demonstrate community is about bringing people together

i’ve said this before, and i’ll say it again. In the world of philanthropy, community partnerships, more than anything else command the influence to make a powerful impact and to facilitate collaboration in working towards a common goal.

The Foundation, therefore, thanks all their community partners, because without their commitment to our mission and mandate we would not be able to do what we do for Langley students.

The latest example includes the amazing efforts of the United Church in partnership with Sunrise and Langley Central Rotary Clubs in Langley. When they realized that hunger was a huge issue for Langley students, they like many others wanted to help.

The groups rallied their respective memberships and raised enough money to support a program at Wix-Brown Elementary, whereby hungry students could take home enough food in their backpacks to feed their families every weekend throughout the year.

But there’s more to it. The Sources Food Bank has also stepped up, providing food to support the program, as has Save-On Foods, who are offering free delivery and a 15% discount on all items. And it doesn’t stop

there! The ordered items are delivered to Brookswood Secondary, where a group of leadership students, led by teacher, Lenny Yun receives them, packages them up in each of the 20 backpacks. Then, volunteers from the United Church deliver them to Wix-Brown to go home with the students. It is now running like a well-oiled machine. And we have just heard that Langley Central Rotary will also be supporting the program with a huge donation from their Wine Fest event proceeds.

So that is what I call collaboration and partnership on a huge scale. Thank you to the United Church and Sunrise Rotary. If you would like to join the team as a volunteer or contributor, please contact Susan Cairns at [email protected] or call 604-532-1464. u

Student learning blossomsto enrich students’ learning experience through nature, James Kennedy Elementary received more than $1200 in funding from Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds, a national program that supports the development of dynamic school grounds with diverse natural features. They also received $200 from NatureKids BC, a provincial non-profit that helps connect children with opportunities to explore nature.

As a result, a new outdoor classroom and natural playground have been built to give students, present and future, the opportunity to learn about and connect with nature right on their own school grounds. Plans include an area featuring native trees, a native plant garden, logs and boulders for outdoor classroom seating, an imaginative play area and a food garden.

“We had a muddy hill with a drainage problem on our primary play area that needed to be improved. We knew we had an opportunity to give our students something special,” says Marlee St. Pierre, teacher. “Planning for the greening project has been a collaboration between teachers, administration and school district staff, with input from the students and parent community.

Less than a week after learning the school was chosen to receive the grant, eight large native trees were put in the ground by the School District 35 maintenance crew. Soon after, students in the James Kennedy Nature Club planted 35 native shrubs around the trees. Parent and club coordinator Melissa Rolfson said of the project, “It was thrilling to see the children so excited.

uThey chose which plants they wanted for our school grounds, dug the holes and carefully planted the native species - everyone participated. The children will be able to see ‘their plants’ grow and take pride in their work.”

This is just phase one of James Kennedy’s school ground greening project. There are plans in the works for natural seating and play features, and a food garden. Benefits of school ground greening projects are many:

increased enthusiasm for learning, environmental awareness and stewardship, enhanced motivation for teaching, improved student behaviour, increased physical activity and opportunities for community involvement in school life.

“Respect for the environment is built into Toyota’s core values, and aligning with like-minded partners like Evergreen allows us to share this respect with future generations,” says Mr. Seiji Ichii, President and CEO, Toyota Canada Inc. u

sleeping giant: Set in an isolated Ontario cottage community during a bleak midsummer, where the volatile dynamics between three teenage friends-by-chance are gradually pushed towards a potentially dangerous imbalance, Sleeping Giant is a finely observed, whip-smart study of the emotional extremes of adolescence, and their potentially catastrophic effects. mustang: Set in northern Turkey, the movie explores the crushing restrictions imposed on young girls, growing up Muslim. But five sisters, who share a common passion for freedom find ways (often ingenious and hilarious) to get around the idiotic constraints imposed upon them by parents and society. Oscar nomination. first there was black friday, then came cyber monday and finally giving tuesday. All three are ways to spend money, but only the latter can make a difference to somebody in need. Giving Tuesday was in full force throughout Langley on December 1 and the Langley School District Foundation, was proud to be part of the initiative that included Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation, Langley Hospice Society, Langley Animal Protection Society and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

a crazy christmas recipe

It all started out innocently enough. My husband and I were enjoying a rare moment of relaxation with the Saturday Globe & Mail.

“Listen to this,” he said. And proceeded to recite not a poem, not a clever adage but a recipe, as long as a novelette. It was called The Thompson Turkey. We laughed in that way that said, “Who in their right mind would EVER make that?” (See accompanying recipe to see what I mean).

christmas day 2001 - drastic change of heart

“OK are you ready? We’re making the Thompson Turkey.” Suddenly my gentle, artistic husband had assumed the role of sergeant major.

“Michael and Matthew, you’re on bowl one. Elizabeth, you and your mum start working on bowl two. Five-year-old Elizabeth actually snapped her skinny legs together and saluted. Unfazed, my husband continued to issue orders.

“Uncle Cliff, you’re in charge of the basting sauce and

The Dressing, bowl 11 apple, peeled, cored and diced 1 orange, peeled and diced 20-ounce can crushed pineapple Grated rind of 1/2 lemon 10-ounce can water chestnuts, drained 3 tablespoons chopped ginger

DirecTionsChop fine the reserved turkey fat. In a small saucepan set over moderate heat combine the reserved fat with 1/2 cup of the water, bring to a boil and simmer until all the water has evaporated and only clear fat and small pieces of solid remain. Reserve fat for stuff-ing.

Season the inside of the turkey with salt and pepper. Rub the skin all over with the oil and season with salt and pepper. Make the gravy: In a saucepan set over moderate heat combine ingredients for the gravy, bring to a boil and simmer while preparing the dressing.

Make the dressing: prepare and combine ingredients in bowl no. 1; prepare and

Debbie, you and Sadie are making the paste and, no we’re not gluing it to the wall and I don’t care if Sadie (our 8-year-old border collie) has no opposing thumb.

“What are you doing, Uncle Ray?” someone dared to ask.

“Derrick and I are going to find bowl three. Hmm we need something the size of a satellite dish. We’ll be back.” And off they went.

So the day proceeded. We chopped and squeezed and laughed like hyenas.

“Who puts lemon and limes in a turkey dressing? grumbled Matthew. Debbie thought her paste looked disgusting. Elizabeth kept saluting whenever she got the chance. Derrick and Dad emerged from some storage room with an old birdbath bowl – washed and sparkling clean and indeed the size of a satellite dish.

“Bowl three”, they announced in unison. Michael took a quick glance out the window to ensure that our TV satellite dish was still intact on the side of the house. It was, but the birdbath was gone.

The day was merry, like no other. After the giant turkey was finally stuffed and in the oven, the games came out. In-between compulsory and frequent bastings we played charades, Trivial Pursuit and the other Christmas tradition, Pick-up-Sticks.

The turkey emerged after 5 hours and much to our surprise, it was unsurpassed.

one month before christmas 2015

“The kids are all coming here for Christmas and they want to do the turkey again”, I said.

“Of course they do,” said my husband. “It’s tradition.”

The Dressing, bowl 22 teaspoons Colman’s mustard 2 teaspoons caraway seed 1 tablespoon celery seed 2 teaspoons poppy seed 2 1/2 tbsp minced fresh oregano leaves1 large bay leaf, crushed 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon mace 1/4 cup minced parsley 4 cloves garlic, minced 4 cloves, minus the heads chopped1/2 teaspoon turmeric 4 large onions, medium chopped 6 celery stalks, medium chopped 1 tablespoon minced fresh marjoram 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh savory 1 tsp each minced fresh thyme & sage 1 teaspoon salt

The Dressing, bowl 31 1/2 pounds fresh bread crumbs 3/4 pound ground veal 1/4 pound ground fresh pork 1/4 pound butter

The gravyGiblets (neck, liver and heart)4 cups water1 bay leaf1 teaspoon paprika1/2 teaspoon ground coriander1 clove garlicSalt to taste

combine ingredients from bowl no. 2; and prepare and combine ingredients from bowl no. 3. In a large bowl combine ingredients from all three bowls. Mix it well. “Mix it with your hands. Mix it until your forearms and wrists ache. Then mix it some more. Now toss it enough so that it isn’t any longer a doughy mass.”

Loosely stuff the turkey. Stuff the neck cav-ity and sew closed the openings. Tie legs together.

Make the paste: combine all ingredients for paste in a bowl, adding enough flour to form a thick paste.

Arrange turkey breast side down on a rack wrapped in foil sitting in a shallow roasting

pan. Brush foil with oil. Put the turkey in the oven and roast it for 15 minutes, or until browned. Turn it breast side up and roast for 15 minutes more. With a pastry or paint brush coat the turkey completely with the paste -- in every nook and cranny. Reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees F.

To simmering gravy add cider and water. Remove from heat but keep warm on top of stove. (This is your basting liquid.) Roast the bird, basting it frequently for 4 1/2 to 5 hours, or until an instant meat thermometer reads 180 to 185 in the thigh; 170 in the breast and 160 in the stuffing.

Let rest 15 to 20 minutes, before peeling away crust.

And the Recipe Is...

it has been said that a leader is not a searcher, but a molder of consensus. Leaders are best when people barely know they exist and when their vision, aims and goals are fulfilled, their followers think they did it themselves. And the leader encourages such thinking.

Teaching students about leadership has long been neglected within the school curriculum, but now, thanks to the forward thinking teachers and administrators in Langley, the SD 35 Leadership Program is well established and recognized as a full-credit course within the curriculum.

In accordance with the mandate, the course strives to Empower the Leader Within and to encourage positive, passionate and purposeful leadership for all students. In so doing, the curriculum has been carefully crafted to provide leadership opportunities in a wide range of areas. (see opposite page).

The creation of the Youth Task Force is an example of the potential impact of the program. When a group of leadership students learned that homeless teenagers have nowhere to go in Langley and they are essentially

unwelcome, they took it upon themselves to find a solution – a daunting task, to say the least.

“There are currently 162 homeless students in Langley,” says Leadership District Coordinator, Lara Petrie. “In order to find shelter they have to either go to Surrey or Abbotsford, where they can reside for a maximum of five days. They are constantly moving back and forth. At the same time, they are struggling to get to school which can take up to two hours per day by bus.”

Recognizing the enormity of the problems that such students face, the leadership students are preparing proposals, organizing meetings with municipal and provincial governments and developing media strategies to get the word out.

The leadership students try to imagine someone their own age out there looking for shelter and something to eat, while trying to keep their meager belongings in order, and at the same time striving to get to school, study and be part of the whole student social scene without any support, whatsoever.

When told about the situation, someone was heard to say – “Wow when banks are making $100 million per week in profit, it’s hard to believe that there aren’t any funds to support Langley teenagers with nowhere to go. Such kids should be honoured for their resiliency, not scorned for their circumstances.”

“It boggles the mind,” says the leadership group. “We need a solution.”

“They will make it work,” says Lara Petrie. u

Annual Food For ThoughT Campaignmore than 3000 children in langley come to school hungry every single day.

they have not had breakfast and they do not have a packed lunch.

ThE LANGLEy SchOOL DiSTRicT FOUNDATiON has embarked on a mission to help feed all hungry kids in the Langley School District. It may surprise you to learn that 100s of Langley students arrive to school hungry, having had no breakfast and without a lunch. Hungry kids cannot learn. It doesn’t matter how good the teacher is or how smart the student is. If the child is hungry, they might as well be asleep. They will never learn on an empty stomach.

Gradually people and businesses are starting to realize that hunger is an issue in Langley. Already the Breakfast Club of Canada, Food For Famine Society, Re/Max Treeland, Otter Co-op, Nature’s Fare, Langley Rotary and Peninsula Runners have stepped up to the plate. Starline Windows and Vitrum Industries have made significant donations to the program and the Langley Township Firefighters’ Charities are delivering snacks to four of our schools. And that’s not all. The Aldergrove Rotary started a backpack program at three Aldergrove Schools and the Central and Sunrise Rotary clubs along with the United Churches of Langley have started a backpack program in Langley. It has become a community effort and with that comes awareness, hope and solutions. With your help we will ensure that EVERY child can enjoy a healthy and nutritious breakfast and lunch. Students will be happier and healthier. Marks and attendance will improve. The results will amaze you.

coming together is a beginning. keeping together is progress. working together is success.

Please help us help our children. We have a goal to raise $50,000 per year - an amount that would ensure that every Langley student receives a nutritious breakfast and lunch. That amount would also allow us to initiate the GARDEN to TABLE PROGRAM where schools build greenhouses and gardens. Students learn to plan and build gardens and greenhouses and to plant, grow, harvest and prepare their own food from start to finish.

with your help we can make our dream your reality.

but there is help.

the generosity of

by Paige Kidder

As a child, my favourite time of year was always December of course. I found it really exuberant, as most do. Though, for some

reason, when Christmas day rolled around, I just didn’t have the same excitement or magical feeling I had leading up to this day. I mean, of course I was excited to open my presents, and for people to open mine, but, just something was different. Something was missing from the whole “Christmas experience” on Christmas day. I just could never figure out what. Was it the disappointment that Christmas was over? Was it that Santa wouldn’t come again for another 365 days? None of these seemed to click, and now, as I am getting older, I am realizing what had me so in awe. Maybe I had no idea what it was back then, but I do now.

Hi, I’m Paige Kidder. Just your average 14 year old, who is really starting to see something intriguing about this time of year. As I get older, I start to observe more, and notice more as well. As we do in English class, I get more into the depth of things. The more, well, what may seem small but are actually leaving a huge impact on everyone things. The generosity of Christmas. Now, if you read the title and thought; “Oh great, another one of the sappy true meaning of Christmas stories” then you, my friend, are quite mistaken. I’m not here to throw at you the Christmas you should celebrate, I’m just telling you my story. My feelings. My discovery. As I prepare for the Christmas season, I notice small little things. Things that people do and don’t even realize they do it. Everyone does it very periodically too. Maybe it’s smiling at someone, donating to the food bank, or helping someone out. It could be sharing your umbrella, or simply just wishing someone a Merry Christmas.

It’s hard to imagine that such everyday things can be so noticed. You never know, maybe even the simplest

thing you do can be worth the world to a stranger. What really makes me happy is the generosity for children. Putting up lights for the kids to watch, letting the little ones hang the ornaments on your tree, even if all the ornaments are clustered in

14-year-old Paige with her best friend, Copper

one spot. The taller adult moving to let the small children watch a community Christmas tree lighting. It’s amazing really, the simplicity of generosity, but the impact it makes. When someone is having troubles, everyone, strangers even, step out of their way to help one in need. People will do this no matter what struggles they are having in their own life, to help one another. It’s inspiring really, how even strangers are connected by their kind hearts and generosity. No one expects anything in return; they just get into the moment, and are willing to show some generosity.

Yes, Christmas is a celebration of family, a celebration of Christ, maybe Hanukkah is what you celebrate, the celebration of the lights. No matter what it is you think this time of year is about, I truly think the strongest trait of the season is generosity. So maybe we all just need to stop and think, and realize how lucky we are. Next time you are out shopping, try to notice the small things we do for each other. Even the smallest act can make a plethora of impact. u

Introducing the butterfly effect to the Langley school district – a program like no other

the butterfly effect is a program designed to bring cultures together, combining them into a synergistic whole that can lead to compelling and life changing results.

Unlike other programs where international students come to the school district to get academic credit, this is about three Kenyan students coming here to audit courses over one semester and immerse themselves in to the day-to-day activities of a Canadian teenager.

The idea is to facilitate deep inquiry. It is not a one-time snapshot.

The Butterfly Effect brings about a profound understanding of how we all thrive and survive in different ways over generations and around the world.

So what makes the Butterfly Effect so unique and what sets it apart from other student exchange programs?

We develop long term relationships that go far beyond exchanging songs and dances.

kenya comes to langleyThe Butterfly Effect is all about sustained cultural inquiry. (stills) It is about exploration and discovery. (appropriate stills) It encourages the exchange of ideas, hypotheses and knowledge. It creates and fosters interaction, understanding and life-long partnerships.

And so it will begin in Langley. The story of intellectual and emotional bonding among teenagers as the very essence of the Butterfly Effect becomes reality. u

the theme for this year’s hair show at aldergrove community secondary school was the four seasons. It sounds innocuous enough, but what the stylists in the hairdressing course created were anything but that. words that come to mind are outrageous, stunning, brilliant and magnificent. Irreverent and bold. all the student stylists, while adhering to the theme had unique visions and forms of expression. cast your eyes on their creations!

throughout 2015, the foundation took creative and adventurous leaps of faith to attack fundraising from different angles, with eyes and mind wide open to every possibility. Our creative fires have been maintained at a steady burn, so new ideas can ignite our work with originality and impact - on demand.

Evidence of our enhanced and rejuvenated outlook is outlined on the month-to-month rendition of Foundation events so provocatively presented on the following pages.

Part of a great team

gordon Zacher - Treasurer and director of the Langley School district Foundation

some may see community involvement as a duty. but gordon zacher believes it’s a privilege. How else could one explain his vast and long-term service and commitment to his community.

“A long time ago I saw opportunity where others saw obligation,” says the retired accountant, father, husband and consummate contributor to all things Langley. Zacher who was the founding partner of BDO Canada LLP, Chartered Accountants in Langley is one of those no-nonsense sort of guys with the proverbial heart of gold.

Even while he was working in the high-powered world of the professional accountant (check out those ads on TV), he was offering his expertise as a volunteer. He was the treasurer of his children’s school PAC and boy scouts group. He was president of the Kinsmen, treasurer of dozens of organizations, director on several boards, including Seaton Woodward Foundation, Langley 2000 BC Games for Athletes with Disabilities, Blair Recreation Centre, Langley Home Support Society and Cornerstone Care Society, to name just a few. Recently he has served as a volunteer on numerous Township Advisory Committees and was the Administration Director for the Langley 2014 BC Seniors Games Society.

In recognition of his prodigious community involvement and service he has received a truckload of awards including the 2001 Community Service Award – BC Institute of Chartered Accountants; Sport BC – 2002 President’s Award, BC Disability Sports; Recipient of Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow award; Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award of Merit, again just to name a few.

Gordon has lived in Langley since 1961 and is a graduate of Langley Secondary School. He is married to Janice and has four children and six grandchildren. The Langley School District Foundation is privileged to have him as a new director and Board Treasurer. u
