LANGUAGE ARTS
Language learning occurs most effectively when students areactively involved in using language for meaningful purposes. InGerman bilingual classrooms, students have the opportunity toacquire two languages that may be applied in achieving thelearning outcomes of the bilingual program.
The Language Arts section in the Curriculum comprises twointerrelated components:
• General Language Component• Specific Language Component
The General Language Component outlines the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be developed using the German language. The General Learning Outcomes in the General Languagecomponent parallel those of The Common CurriculumFramework for English Language Arts, Kindergarten to Grade12: Western Canadian Protocol for Collaboration in BasicEducation, 1998.
The Specific Language Component provides the linguisticelements that students develop in German as well as quantitativedescriptions of the levels of proficiency expected in each grade.
This approach focuses all language learning instruction, whetherthe language of delivery be English or German, on thedevelopment of the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes thatare common to both languages.
German Language Arts, K – S4 General Language Component / 13
GENERALLANGUAGECOMPONENT
The General Language Component provides the context andpurpose for the development and use of the German language.
The commonalities with the English language arts documentfacilitate an integrated, contextualized approach to languagelearning. They also establish essential language learning that iscommon to both English and German language programming bysupporting and promoting a collaborative and integrated approachto language instruction. The Specific Learning Outcomesestablished for each grade level reflect achievement expectationsto be demonstrated in German.
General LearningOutcomes
The following five General Learning Outcomes outline the keylearnings that the General Language Component is designed tosupport.
General Learning Outcome 1Students will listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent inGerman to explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences.
