2. The Brevet

● The French national brevet diploma is both an assessment and a certification of the knowledge and skills acquired at the end of French middle school.

● It is one of the two standardized French assessments (Brevet and the Baccalaureate). While it is not required, it is a prestigious diploma and is highly regarded by any French and/or French accredited institutions.

● The brevet has a dual component: ongoing assessments based on grades (9th grade year) and exams taken at the end of 9th grade

● Final exams include 4 written exams - French, Mathematics, History/Geography, and Science - and 1 oral exam (presentation of an interdisciplinary project led during the school year)

● Passing grade is 400 points

● Exams usually take place during the first week of June. Starting in June 2021, exams will take place at LFNO.

What is the French baccalaureate?

● The French Baccalaureate is an extensive, national examination taken at the end

of the “Lycée” (HS), upon completion of 11th and 12th grade. It marks the

successful conclusion of secondary studies and it is the required qualification in

France for students wishing to carry on their studies in higher education.

● A diploma from a French International high school like LFNO reflects

success in a demanding, comprehensive, integrated, internationally-based

college preparatory program unique in the US.

● Courses that prepare students for the French Baccalaureate are taught at the college level. As a result, most of the Canadian and US colleges and universities grant college credit or scholarships to French secondary graduates on the basis of their performance on the Baccalaureate

● Starting in 2021, the French Baccalaureate will combine ongoing assessments in 11th and 12th grade and final examinations in 11th (1) and 12th grade (4)

The French American baccalaureate

This is the synthesis of the Advanced Placement program and the

French Baccalaureate. In close partnership with the College

Board, the French Ministry of National Education has agreed to

devise a special diploma recognizing an excellent mastery of the

French language and culture as well as of the English language

and American culture. For the FAB, students take 3-4 APs

corresponding to their special track, instead of three

corresponding courses for the Baccalaureate.

4. The Diplôme d’étude en langue française

● The DELF is a diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education to prove the French-language skills of non-French candidates

● There are six independent diplomas which correspond, respectively, to the six levels of the Council of Europe' s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL)

● B1 corresponds to the 3rd level and is taken by Lycée students in 8th grade or new students in 9th grade

● B2 corresponds to the 4th level and will be taken by Lycée students who do not take the FAB in 12th grade

● Most French universities require the DELF B2 certificate to register

4. The Diplôme d’étude en langue française

● Students under the age of 17 years old take the DELF junior. The junior version is adapted to the teenage lifestyle and corresponds to the interests of teens.

● The DELF has four components, each counting for 25% of the exams: written comprehension, written production, oral comprehension, and oral production.

● Passing grade is 50 out of 100

● The exam is usually scheduled in March
