• My work is very physical. I’m quite famous and I earn a lot of money, some people say I earn too much.

• Professional footballer• I’m basically a secretary to a high ranking executive in the corporation I work for.

• T.V. Presenter• I have a team of people whose job it is to present our products to potential customers throughout the region.

• Journalist• I sometimes save people’s lives, but mostly I just intervene in minor incidents.

Did you find the mistakes?

1) I am not satisfied with the service here and I demand to speak to your manager/supervisor. In fact there are two mistakes here because the word ‘responsible’ is spelled with an ‘i’ and not with an ‘a’; also this word can never be a personal noun –it is only an adjective.

2) I worked as a sales assistant in a shop last summer. Last summer obliges you to use the past simple ‘worked’

and not the present perfect ‘have worked’

3) He is one of the most senior managers in the company. After one of we must make the noun managers plural.

4) In his work he is responsible for dealing with customer complaints. Preposition for after responsible.

5) Your future career prospects will depend onyour performance over the next six months.Preposition on after depend.

I have known Yukio for six months. (Why not ‘have been knowing’?)

Jo Hyun has understood the problem since yesterday morning. (Why not

‘has been understanding’?)

Certain verbs refuse the continuous form in English even when the situation demands a continuous form.

Other examples of these ‘capricious’ verbs are:

to know, to see, to need, to like, to love, to hate, to detest, to understand, to own, to belong to, to posess, to have when it is a synonym for to posess, to believe, to think when it is a synonym for to believe.

To understand this phenomenon better try using these same verbs in the French present tense placing ‘en train de’ in front of them and see how bizarre it looks.

Je suis en train de connaître Yukio.

Nous sommes en train de voir la maison, mais elle est encore loin.

Elle est en train d’avoir besoin d’un parapluie car il pleut dehors

Etes-vous en train d’avoir une voiture?

But what about the McDonald’s slogan ‘I’m lovin’ it’? – My only answer is that perhaps the grammar error is what gives it its charm, and remember the old adage: ‘Rules are made to be broken’.

Fuat has been living in Instanbul since he got a job there. OR Fuat has

lived in Instabul since he got a job there.

Mariana has been working at home for two years. OR Mariana has

worked at home for two years.

Why are both correct?

We can often replace the Present Perfect Continuous with the Present Perfect Simple even when the context demands a Present Perfect Continuous form.

If the original idea in the present tense was in the Present Simple then we can use the P P Simple instead of the P P Continuous.

For example: ‘He lives in London, he has lived there for two years now.’ ‘I teach English, I’ve taught it for nearly thirty years now.’

If the original idea in the present tense was in the Present Continuous then we must use the P P Continuous.

For example: ‘She is waiting for the bus, she has been waiting for the bus for over ten minutes now. ‘Susan is reading War and Peace, she’s been reading that book for nealy a year now.

1) Remember that the ‘capricious’ verbs can

never take the Present Perfect Continuous.

2) Remember that, even though, we can

sometimes replace the Present Perfect

Continuous by the Present Perfect simple,

it is not an obligation, and if you prefer

you can leave them all in the Present

Perfect continuous if you find it less

confusing.

the activity itself and its duration. Examples:

I’ve been drinking coffee nearly all my life.

She’s been reading that novel for almost three weeks

now.

a) We use the present perfect continuous to

emphasise that an action started in the past

and is still continuing. (« Jean Pierre has been

and is completed. (Jean Pierre has been to

New York il a été à New York dans le passé

mais nous ne savons pas quand, si on le
