Well, what a month it’s been with festival music, art and dance across thecity and a fair bit of sunshine beaming down on us (albeit, with a bit of abrisk wind getting in the way).

This means that things are only going to get better when it comes towhat’s going on outdoors in the coming months, from picnics andfestivals in the park to beer gardens and burgers on the BBQ.

This month there’s only really one thing we’re talking about and that’sfootie fever, as the World Cup takes over the city screens and thethoughts of the people who live here. Large has profiled the best placesto watch the football to hopefully make life a little easier for you.

And on a final note, Manchester never fails to surprise as we’ve beenblessed with our very own Banksy it seems...whatever next? I can’t waitto see what the summer brings!

Until next time...

Sending Large Love.

Finding TheRight Property

Landlord

I am looking at renting my apartment out but my main concern iswhat happens if the tenants don’t pay the rent?

Granite: Even the best tenants fall on hard times but thankfully it is a verylow percentage of tenants that default on their rent. Rather than refusalto pay, late or non payment is usually down to a tenant’s inability to paywhen circumstances change, such as redundancy. This is why we includeFREE rental guarantee insurance for our landlords as standard whichensures that if the worst did happen, landlords aren’t out of pocket. They get their rent for the remainder of the tenancy and we deal withthe technicalities.

My current letting agent is slow sending my rent over every month. It sometimes takes 2-3 weeks before it hits my account. Is thisstandard procedure?

Granite: This may be normal procedure for some, everybody worksdifferently but we do not see this as an acceptable level of service. Our aimis to make our landlords lives as easy as possible so we make payments tothem on a daily basis. We also guarantee our landlords receive theirmonthly rent no later than three working days after it’s due.

Tenant

I’m looking to rent a property in the city centre but I’m strugglingto find an agent who will offer me a viewing after I finish work at6pm..I find this very bizarre!?

Granite: Most of our tenants are very busy people, which is why we offerviewings seven days a week from 8am until 10pm. We go out of our wayto ensure all of our landlords properties are rented faster than ourcompetition and we do this by working to our tenant’s requirements, notour office opening hours.

I have just applied to renew my contract for another six monthsand my current agent is demanding a renewal fee, is this how allagents operate?

Granite: No, we don’t charge a renewal fee. If a tenant pays on time andthe property is well looked after we don’t see any point providing obstaclesfor re-signing. Unfortunately renewal fees are common amongst lettingagents and can be very expensive. They are normally written into yourtenancy agreements so read through yours in detail before you sign or askthe question before you put down a deposit.

Papa G’s

You might overlook restaurants inThe Printworks as being purely ofthe chain variety but last AugustPapa G’s opened and added anice balance to the neon lights.Unlike many of its neighbours, it’sa restaurant with a story behind it.

The owner’s grandfather came toManchester in the 1930’s fromCyprus armed with only a suitcasefull of Cypriot lace which he sold towealthy families in the UK. Thisallowed him and another fellowCypriot he worked with to startsmall restaurants in Bolton and

Wilmslow, and now his grandsonhas integrated family recipes into hisown restaurant.

The restaurant prides itself onembracing traditional Greek andCypriot methods, cooking on realcharcoal to make the flavours reallypowerful. The menu is packed fullof family favourites, really madefrom traditional family recipes.

My experience with this cuisinehas always been a negative one.Prior to my visit I was reminiscing onsloppy take-away Greek kebabs andoutdated restaurants with a map of

Greece on the wall but Papa G’scouldn’t be further from this.

After eagerly peering at otherdiners plates we started withsharing warm Greek flatbreads(£4.95 plus three sharing dips).Quite simply – delicious! The dipswe chose were feta chilli, roastedred pepper and houmous but thereare lots to choose from.

We also tried Mushroom risottoballs coated in crispy parmesan(£4.95) which were quite pepperyin taste but complimented by thesubtle cheese coating. Moving ontomain meals, my guest opted forWild Mushroom and AubergineMoussaka (£8.95) topped withhalloumi cheese. It was oozing withflavour and spices and didn’t lack intaste due to the absence of meat.Served with a Greek side salad itwas divine.

The aromas from the kitchen left ussalivating and Papa G’s BBQ dishesare really what set the tone for thewhole restaurant. I ordered ChickenSouvlaki (£12.95) which is

skewered chicken, bursting withdelicious seasoning served with fatchips (always good in my book),flat bread and tzatsiki. The servingwas very generous and the meatwell cooked.

The chef’s secret sauce is on everytable. My server informed me thatthe ingredients really are a secretand it’s been designed to enhancethe flavours of the food. It certainlymade a change from the usualketchup to dip your chips in!

It’s not often you leave a restaurantthinking about the next time youcan get along for a repeat visit, bursting to tell all your friends aboutit, but this is one of those places. Itruly believe that the food is reallyup there with some of the bestestablishments in this city; it’s justsometimes negatively perceivedbecause of its location. My advice is don’t be pretentious, follow your nose!

Barbirolli Square 31-33 Lower Moseley Street, M2 3BD.

Barbirolli

What was the Pitcher & Piano, neatly tucked between theBridgewater Hall andManchester Central, is now thedelightful Barbirolli. Aptly namedafter the composer Sir JohnBarbirolli, the restaurant and barsits on the waterfront location ofBarbirolli Square.

The pool tables of its predecessorare long gone and in their place sitsa venue so welcoming you will endup staying all night.

The brainchild of dynamic duo PetePetrondas and Barry Hogan aims toprovide Manchester with a venuethat combines live music with goodfood in surroundings that can onlybe described as resplendent.Intimate dining is available, as wellas more relaxed social seatingareas and booths cloaked in soft, luxurious fabrics lit with glitteringchandeliers.

The large outside area will beutilised in the summer for themasses. Think the soft, melodic

sounds of Café del Mar with freshfood straight off the barbeque.Ex-Heathcotes chef Scott Millerhas devised a menu which hedescribes as modern British witha Mediterranean twist which willchange seasonally.

I started with the Chicken & DuckLiver Parfait (£5.25) served with redonion marmalade on toast. Themarmalade complemented thesmooth texture of the pate andbrought out the gamey flavour. My guest had the Lancashire blackpudding and goat’s cheese parcel(£5.50) which was beautifullycreamy and encased in light flakypastry. The only complaint was thatthere wasn’t enough of the sourapple and raspberry purée whichaccompanied the dish.

My main course was Pan friedskate wing (£11.95) withMorecambe Bay shrimp whichcame with hand cut chips, peapurée and shrimp butter. Not asbeautifully presented as the other

dishes, but it still delivered perfectlybalanced flavours. My guestsampled the Fillet steak from thegrill (£19.95) which was succulent, perfectly cooked and cameaccompanied with a peppercornand brandy sauce.

For dessert I opted for the age-oldfavourite - Manchester Tart (£4.50).Not to be disappointed, thismodern twist on a classicManchester dish incorporatedbananas sitting in a pastry casewith the most fantastic sharpraspberry, which cut through thebanana and was a delight to thesenses. My guest went for theVanilla pannacotta (£5.95) withpeppered strawberry which wasagain delicious with a subtle hintof aniseed.

The venue proudly boasts a geniuscocktail menu lovingly created byLuka. His shots are about to setManchester alight with stunningflavours for every palate. I canhighly recommend the strawberrycheesecake.

Barbirolli offers 2-4-1 on selectedcocktails, sprits, beers and wineand a budget-friendly pre-theatremenu with two for £12.95 so thereare no excuses for not trying outthis majestic new venue withfantastic food and a greatatmosphere.

Two years on from a nostalgicUK tour of their 1996 Platinumselling debut album ‘Expectingto Fly’, The Bluetones are backon the road with their eagerlyawaited sixth studio album‘A New Athens’.

The band popped their Manchestercherry back in ‘94 at TheRoadhouse supporting Strangelove, and as the Mecca of Indie musicwelcomes them back with openarms nearly 16 years later, Largechatted with lead singer MarkMorris and found that although theduffle coats have disappeared thesound is unmistakable.

So what can fans expect from‘A New Athens’It’s quite a raucous soundingcollection of songs really. A raucousmix of English psychedelia… Notpsychedelic in the sense of tie-dye,more of layered English rock music.

Its four years since the last album, how did this one come together? We’ve been writing throughout thefour years, but three of us becamedads for the first time in betweenas well, so for a little while it washard for us to get together. Thewriting process for us has alwaysbeen to write stuff separatelyanyway though, basic demo’swhich we then bring into the roomto work on and finish together.

Bluetones – More than aSlight Return...

Six albums in, how havemotivations and ambitionsof the band changed? Our ambitions are probably a bitmore modest now than when wewere younger, but our motivationsare still the same – we just want tomake music we would like to hear.We still get a kick out of the factwe’ve still got it. Our muse hasn’tleft us yet, and you only get onelife don’t you, so you’ve got tomake the most of what you’vegot while you’ve got it. We’vestill got good music in us, and stilllove touring.

On touring, you’re playingManchester tonight, anystand-out memories? We’ve been here countless timesover the years and it’s a city thathas always been very good to us.It’s always been an exciting placefor us to come obviously becauseof its massive musical heritage, especially when we were youngerplaying venues we’d only heardabout or read about. But as you

get older it changes. It’s still anexciting city but now we lookforward to hanging out at niceplaces, seeing the sights… and it’sgot great shops (laughing) I soundlike a tourist…. I am a tourist!

Having released four albums inthe naughties, is it frustratingthat you carry the Britpop tagaround with you still?Yeah sometimes you can get a bitpigeon-holed, people think theyknow what we sound like... Theysay “oh The Bluetones… they’rea bit Shed 7, a bit Oasis, a bitBlur”… And we don’t think we’reany of those things. Apart from theobvious that there’s guitars, bassand drums. But the songs are of adifferent ilk and the whole voice ofthe band is different. We’ve got adefined sound, for us that’ssomething like the colour of oureyes, the colour of our hair, wecan’t change it. That’s just thechemistry we’ve got.

Are you into any of the newerbands around?Well my main window to newmusic is Radio 6 music. I quite likedPassion Pit last year, they had agood album, and there was a bandthat toured with us recently calledMarried to the Sea, they were reallygood - we are all bang into them!(Laughing) I went to see Lady GaGaa few weeks ago, she was excellent!

The Bluetones new album ‘A NewAthens’ is set for release in June. L

They say“oh The Bluetones…they’re a bit Shed 7,

a bit Oasis, a bit Blur”…We don’t think we’reany of those things

We’ve got loads of gigs comingup and we spend lots of timerehearsing together as a band nowand the energy is building up.Livegigs are a great release of energy.”

“We’re playing the Hungry PigeonFestival in the Northern Quarter on30th May and we’re lookingforward to it” says Andy.

When asked about the future ofthe band they say “We feel thatthis is going to be a big year forus, we have finally got some goodcontacts and people are becominginterested in us. We went througha period of asking venues to haveus play. In the past 8-9 months wehave stepped it up and it’s nowpaying off. We are trying to pushthe band hard now, we wantthings to go well and we don’twant to let anyone down. Whenwe hear an album of ours on a latenight radio show, we’ll know we’vemade it”.

Unsigned band The Ambersonshave a stack of gigs lined upand some impressive andinnovative music available onthe internet. They have alsofeatured on BBC Introducing. To find out more about thegroup, I went to meet up withAndy and Ben.

Andy and Ben met about ten yearsago when they were each inseparate bands. “We had a bit of afight in a corridor during a gig”they said, “after that we formed aband”. That project ended, then 18months ago The Ambersons rosefrom the ashes. The group of sixalso includes Steve, Rich, Chris andRichard. The band spend most oftheir time rehersing in Warrington.“We find being outside Manchesteris beneficial” says Andy, “It helpsus to be different and stand outfrom lots of the other new music

that’s happening in Manchester atthe moment”.

Ben describes their influencesas The Beatles and Super FurryAnimals, “I also enjoy Electric LightOrchestra, but we also find we takebits from everything that is aroundus including dance, country andpop music”. “Our music has a livelyfeel with upbeat lyrics” says Ben,who writes all of the songs. “Wedo perform some covers though,we love to make them our ownand play them together as a band.

Bleak and ashen-skied she maybe, there is (and always hasbeen) that certain somethingabout Manchester and its style. It carries off a beard or a scarflike no other and knows thatfine line between where awoman’s skirt is just aboutfamily- friendly or short enoughto be interesting.

Manchester is home to realfashion. Not your flighty Prada orBalenciaga whimsical nonsense,

but proper clothes that people feelat home in. It’s also worth notingthat Manchester is the little knownhome of the second largestcollection of clothing and costumein the country, including ascorching pink Givenchy dressowned by the lovely AudreyHepburn. The Gallery of Costumeat Platt Hall has only last monthreopened following an extensivespring clean. Call it the originalvintage, if you will.

I would go out tonight, but Ihaven’t got a stitch to wear

It’s also an enlightening placeto start when defining trueManchester style. Housing not justcouture, Platt Hall is also home toan unprecedented collection ofcivilian dress, and shows how theclothes city dwellers wore somehundred years past were utterlydrab and boring - save for thescarves, shoes and hair styles theycould toy with to give them a senseof individuality.

To picture the Manchester look, start with a woven wool jacket innavy or black – belted or mac stylessuit the brisk winds we have tocontend with. A hulk of vintagefake fur or a military cape is also afavourite with girls. Add layers ofslim jeans (turned up at the anklefor chaps), jersey dresses that clingto curves or a womanly shift dressworn with immaculate make upand fat jewellery, gritty boots orsaucy shoes.

Mostly, it’s the character and heartof Manchester that speaks throughits daily dress. Yes, there is a certainnovelty to having to battle withrain that seems to creep into everylast melancholic, Northern song.Yes, it trashes hair and carefullyapplied make up but it’s alwaysheartening to see that whilst yourcomplete ‘look’ may be ruined inmere minutes, Mancunians keepon smiling through. ManchesterStreet Style

Office apparel has evolved in recent years, taking its place todayat the cutting edge of fashions’ current trends. This summer weare seeing a look that once was limited to the workplace captureManchester style; from staple trench coats to classic leathersatchels, it’s clear that the ‘Office Chic’ trend means business.

The predominantly masculinestyle generally typified by formalsuits and pencil skirts has beensoftened by flowing blouses andcotton peg trousers, forming asuitably feminine look that is justas prevalent in menswearcollections this Spring/Summer.Shirts have been liberated, withthe conventional tie making wayfor quirky bow ties and patternedscarves. Yet fitted blazers andtuxedo style jackets are stillwelcome additions to an outfit, offering a conservative look idealfor the workplace. L

Gym do’s & don’tsIs cardio the way to go? Shouldyou take a good book to keepyou company while you workout? We get down to the nittygritty of what you should andshouldn’t be doing at the gym...

1. Avoid machine weights - theyallow no freedom for yourmuscles, literally boring themsenseless with the samemovement pattern. Choosefree weights, cables or SwissBalls instead.

2. Don't overdo the cardio. Toomuch cardio isn’t effective andcan actually result in your bodyproducing hormones thatencourage fat storage.

3. Train "movements" not"muscles". Include exercisesthat involve pushing, pulling, squatting, lunging, bendingand twisting.

4. Posture is key! Avoid injuries andpoor posture by stretching andusing a foam roller if your gymhas one for at least 5 minutesbefore you work out!

5. 100 sit-ups a day will not flattenthat tummy and will only lead topoor posture. Choose exercisesthat engage lots of muscles. Asquat, for example, involves over14 major muscles.

6. Don’t wander around the gymhalf-heartedly doing this or thatexercise. Have a goal and adefined plan to reach it. Decidewhat you’re going to do beforeyou get to the gym and writeit down. Having no plan willdecrease your chances ofsuccess.

7. Focus on your workout - leavethe books and other distractersat home!

My GOSH May has been a busymonth! So first off I’m writing youthis from Barcelona. Love my cityI do, but sometimes it’s nice toexperience another culture.

Especially a culture that thinks it’svery okay to lie in bed till 11ameveryday and then take anothernap in the afternoon. These lot callthem siesta’s but I’m sticking withdisco nap! I’ve been drinking lotsof Estrella and sunbathing.I probably should have learntmore words than just ‘Hola’

though, my conversations withpeople usually don’t make it muchpast about six seconds.

Just before I left, I went to watchwhat I think is quite possibly thefunniest twosome in the wholewide world - Flight of theConchords at The Apollo. I havealways loved the Apollo, the insideis so pretty. I always think when I’mthere I wish I had enough friends(and a fiancé) so I could getmarried on that stage. Next doorthere’s also a little old skool pub(Apsley Cottage) that’s full ofcharacter and perfect for beforeand after gig drinks. Just don’t getyourself too carried away in therelike I did, having to be draggedaway whilst shouting ‘Brett sign myboob’ was not one of my proudermoments…

Right dears I’m off to watch theBarca match.
