Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) on Finch West LRT

Finch West LRT, Toronto• 11 km LRT line on Finch Ave West from Yonge St to Humber College

• 16 surface stops and 2 below‐grade terminal stations

• Mainly above‐ground in dedicated right of way

• Extensive road widening, utility relocation, maintenance facility

• Infrastructure Ontario Alternative Financing & Procurement (AFP) contract to design, build, finance, maintain

• $2.5B AFP contract awarded 2018 to ACS/Aecon/Dragados/CRH

• Utility early works commenced in 2016, construction 2018 ‐ 2023

• Utility conflicts are major risk with LRT projects

• Early coordination with utility firms essential

• Identify utility conflicts with SUE

• Mitigate utility conflicts in design

ASCE 38‐02 Quality LevelsAmerican Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) “Standard Guideline for the Collection and Depiction of Existing Subsurface Utility Data”.

• A : Information obtained by exposing and measuring the precise horizontal and vertical position of a utility at a specific point.

• B : Information obtained with surface geophysical techniques to determine the existence and approximate horizontal position.

• C : Information obtained by surveying and plotting visible above‐ground utility features and by using professional judgement.

• D : Information derived from existing records or oral recollections.

Enbridge Gas Early Works

• Metrolinx executed Preparatory Agreement

• Enbridge staff designed gas main relocations

• Early works construction defined by Enbridge design

• LRT alignment shifted 2m to retain 760mm diam gas main (relocation costs approx $22M per km)

• Approx 1 km gas main relocations were unavoidable
