TDBC Supports Animal Shelter

Bridge players are animal lovers! When the Tallahassee Duplicate Bridge Club (TDBC) held their April charity game to support the Animal Shelter Foundation (ASF), 14 tables of players showed up to win masterpoints and raise funds for ASF. Dexter (photo above), a 2-year-old Basset Hound mix available for adoption from Tallahassee’s Animal Service Center, provided the game’s introduction and was escorted by two ASF Board members. First overall winners were Judy and Jim Lyle, earning 2.8 mps for their 61% game. Players donated a total of $550 to ASF and also brought in many items for homeless animals–food, snacks, collars, blankets, towels and toys. Pictured below Perry Dale, Animal Shelter Assistant Supervisor (L)with Rini Bartlett (R) delivering the donations.

ASF supports animals in the care of the Animal Service Center by funding a variety of programs that improve the quality of life for both

the animals in need and those entrusted in their care. Some of these programs include low-cost vaccinations, animal birth control, and heartworm help. Their HART and UTOPIA programs in correctional facilities help rehabilitate both inmates and dogs. In the past, TDBC has held charity games for The Shelter, Leon County Humane Society, Refuge House, Big Bend Hospice, and the Senior Center Foundation and participated in WFSU fundraising efforts.

Carla Burke, District 9 Volunteer of the Year Award

While attending the Ft Lauderdale Goodwill Reception on April 5, 2013, Jeri  Edge, Unit  219 President and Sue  Smith, District 9 Representative, accepted the Volunteer of the Year Award for Carla Burke. Carla was unable to attend due to her husband's illness. She received this prestigious honor because of her tireless efforts as District 9 Education Chair for the past three years. Carla focused primarily on Florida's youth, especially the annual Youth NABC. Returning to Pensacola, Jeri and Sue planned a party for Carla to present the beautiful award to her (Carla's husband, Mike, is back home from the hospital and doing much better). On Friday, May 10, the award was presented to Carla. Carla's husband, Mike, her daughter, Karen Manning, and two grandchildren, Mary Grace and Elizabeth were present to help celebrate this occasion. A Club Championship game followed the celebration with Winston and Jennie Legge winning first overall in the open pairs and Dolores Vest and Richard  Osborn and Brian and Cindy Van Vliet tying first overall in the 199er's. Many thanks to all the PDBC members helping make this a special day for Carla; she was truly touched by this honor and great fun was had by everyone. 299er Swiss Teams Tallahassee DBC 299ers recently learned that matchpoints is not the only bridge game in town! On a recent Saturday, the club hosted a special game to introduce new players to IMP scoring and victory points. With eleven tables, players experienced both head-to-head and round robin matches and were stratified in three flights. The overall winning team was captained by Ruth McDonald leading teammates Monna Bryant, Patt Jones, and Lena Allen.

Player response was overwhelmingly positive, and many already have planned to form teams for the upcoming sectional. Look for the Flight C Swiss section to grow!

Douglas Parker, (L) TDBC's ACBL Tournament Director extraordinaire lectures prior to the 1st match on Swiss Team Scoring and Tactics. Sam Reddick (L) and Teresa  Sarbeck (R) learned the most important Swiss Team tip, be first in the lunch line!Changes In Managers Tallahassee is experiencing a

change in club managers. Sadly, Douglas Parker has advised that he is stepping down after two fun years. As our manager he

oversaw the introduction of Bridgemates. There was some resistance to this innovation, but they are now well-accepted. Douglas plans to direct most of TDBC Tuesday games and play there often. He will continue to manage clubs in Marianna and Dothan, AL and is a working ACBL director at tournaments around the state. We send Douglas a bunch of good luck wishes.

TDBC is happy to announce that Steve Ross has accepted the position of TDBC club manager. He started playing bridge when he was about 12 years old --

his mother needed a fourth for her bridge party and he reluctantly filled in. He started playing duplicate while attending Florida State University. After graduating, he played rubber bridge occasionally, but didn't get into duplicate until the Internet came along. When he met his partner Judy, they started attending club games regularly. He says he is looking forward to serving TDBC. We know he will do a great job.

Eleanor Anker On February 21, the Destin and Fort Walton Beach Clubs said goodbye to Eleanor  Anker, our friend and fellow bridge player. She recently moved to Newnan, Georgia to be closer to family. The Destin Bridge Club gave her a wonderful going away party with 26 tables of bridge and other close friends stopping by to say goodbye with a promise to visit. Eleanor joined ACBL in 2005 playing five days a week with road trips to tournaments to get extra points. She made Life Master, getting her last gold points in Biloxi, Mississippi with a super team of Lesley Musselman, Sandy Carney, Audree Newman and Dan and Lorraine Jarboe at the age of 93. She continued playing in the Destin and Fort Walton Beach clubs plus tournaments, achieving the rank of Bronze Life Master and is well on her way to becoming a Silver Life Master. For a lady 95 years old, she is exceptional, and is an inspiration to all bridge players.

On Saturday, April 12 , Margaret Joyner, Sandy Carney and Karen Couch stopped by to spend the night in Newnan to visit Eleanor on their way to the Gatlinburg Regional. They played bridge with her in the afternoon, went out to dinner at a local Mexican Restaurant (great food with the best margaritas) and shared memories celebrating past birthdays at Pepito’s Mexican Restaurant in Destin, then back to play bridge until 10:00. She has made many new friends and has already joined several duplicate clubs.

A huge “Thank You” to retiring President, Nancy Hagerty! Nancy has been on the board for years and has just finished two consecutive years as our leader. She remains an active board member and, as incoming President, I will lean heavily on her expertise and wisdom!

As Unit 240 begins a new year we welcome new Board Members and thank those that are leaving! Our Board Members are amazing…five from the Vero Beach area and three from Brevard County spent part of their Memorial Day weekend driving across the state to attend a Board Meeting! We have 16 board members who represent 2300 players in our Unit. These people volunteer their time and energy on your behalf representing all of us both in our Unit and in Florida’s District 9! Should you have concerns or questions please feel free to make them known to the board member who represents your area. You will find the appropriate person and their contact information by going to our Unit website at: http://acblunit240.com/staff.htm. (You might also thank them for their efforts!)

Our annual meeting will be held at the next Orlando Sectional the weekend of July 26–28.

Ace Asking for Slam Biddingfor intermediate & novice players

Being a top bridge writer for a major publication like the Sunshine Bridge News has some perks. One is that I get to hobnob with the top players. I'm on a first name basis with Meckstroth and Rodwell, I call them "Mister" and "Sir", and they call me "Hey You". I ran into Sir at a recent tournament, our conversation went something like this: "Hey You, got any idea where the men's room is?". "Yes Sir, down that hall and to the left." Pretty cool, huh? This month I'm going to lay down some rules about ace-asking when looking for slam. I'll also show some incredibly clever and totally artificial examples that make exactly the points I want to make. As is traditional in instructional articles, the examples will be so clear cut that there will be no chance to go wrong. Naturally, your real life problems will be tougher, requiring you to make choices and exercise judgement. If you don't like that, don't complain to me, write to Mister and see if you can get any sympathy. Here are the Rules (there are 5 of them):

1. If you ask for aces, and discover that one ace is missing, you WILL bid a slam. Stopping short with only one ace missing is a rookie mistake. If you're not sure you can make the slam, something went wrong before you asked. You hold: ♠AQ JTxx ♥--- ♦AQ JTx ♣ xx You open 1♠, partner makes a limit raise to 3♠, you bid 4NT, and he shows one ace. Is it the club ace or the heart ace? You've asked the wrong question, you don't want to know how many aces partner has, you want to know what he has in clubs. You should have shown your diamond control by bidding 4♦. Bypassing 4♣ shows that you have no club control, and will focus partner's attention on that suit. If you made a mistake and bid 4NT, and discovered that partner has one ace, man up and bid 6♠. He'll be more aggravated if you stall in 5♠ and make 6 than he will be if you bid 6♠ and go down. On this hand, you might make a slam even if partner has no aces:

♠Kxxx ♥xxxx ♦Kx ♣KQx Obviously, if you don't need any aces from partner to make a slam, it is pointless to ask him how many he has.2. If 4NT on a particular auction is Blackwood, then 4♣ is NOT Gerber. There is no need for two different ways to ask for aces. You open 1♠, and hear partner respond 4♣. Whatever your agreement is about the meaning of 4♣, it should NOT be Gerber. Partner could have bid 4NT if he wanted to know how many aces you hold. Sometimes people say that Gerber is safer than Blackwood, because you can stay at the 4 level if partner does not have enough aces. That's nonsense, if you're afraid of the 5 level, why are you trying for slam? I like 4♣ to be a splinter, showing a singleton or void in clubs, 4 spades, and game forcing values. Other agreements are also possible. Opener ♠AJTxx ♥AKxx ♦x ♣xxx Responder ♠KQxx ♥Q Jx ♦AQxxx ♣x The splinter will get you to 6♠ with 26 points between you. Switch opener's hearts and clubs, and 6♠ has no play. Asking for aces won't solve that problem. The auction should go:

Opener Responder1♠ 4♣ (splinter)

4♥ (cue) 4NT (aces?)5♥ (2) 6♠

Opener's cue bid is encouraging, he has no wasted club values opposite responder's singleton. If opener's hearts and clubs were switched, he'd sign off in 4♠, because 7 points opposite partner's singleton are a poor fit. 3. After a 3NT bid, 4NT is a natural raise, invitational to 6NT, it is NOT ace-asking. You hold: ♠Kx ♥KQxx ♦AKJxx ♣Ax You open 1♦, partner responds 1♠, and you reverse into 2♥, promising 16+ points, 5+ diamonds, and 4 hearts. Partner now bids

3NT. This shows about 10 points, enough for game opposite your 16. But you have 20 points, not 16. How can you find out if partner has anything extra? Raise to 4NT. He should pass with a minimum for his previous bidding, and bid 6NT if he has some extra, undisclosed values. He should NOT tell you how many aces he has. Is it possible to get to slam missing two aces? Sure, but it isn't likely. If you're physically incapable of bidding a slam without first asking for aces, there are pharmaceutical and surgical solutions, ask your doctor about them. Be careful about this one though:

Opener Responder

1♠ 2NT(game forcing spade raise)

4NT This is Blackwood, not a NoTrump raise. Partner's 2NT is a spade raise, so spades are agreed as trump. There is no need for an invitational raise to 6NT. Why is that? Weren't you paying attention, spades are trump!4. Gerber is ALWAYS a jump. In particular, if partner's last bid was 3NT, then 4♣ is NOT Gerber. Since 4NT is not Blackwood (see Rule 3), then how do you ask for aces? Bid 5♣. Some people say that 4♣ should be Gerber, and 5♣ should show clubs. The problem with that is that sometimes you need to know whether partner has club support, but you do not want to risk being passed. After 3NT is reached, 4♣ is forcing because stopping in a part score after you've already reached game is a no-no. However, if you played that 4♣ was Gerber, and 5♣ was natural, partner might pass 5♣, because game bids are not forcing. Also, if partner does NOT like the idea of a club slam, you need to be able to stop in 4NT, because 5♣ is a loser, at least at matchpoints. You hold ♠KQ JTx ♥Ax ♦ x ♣AQ Jxx You open 1♠, partner responds 2♥, you rebid 3♣, and partner bids 3NT. You need to be able to offer up clubs again without committing to them. If 4♣ were Gerber, how would you ever reach 6♣ opposite responder's ♠x ♥ KJxxx ♦Axx ♣Kxxx? On the other hand, how would you stay out of 6♣ if partner held ♠xx ♥KJxxx ♦AKxxx ♣x?

On the second hand, you want to play 4NT, but on the first you want to play 6♣. How about this one: You hold ♠KQ JT9xx ♥Ax ♦Kx ♣Ax You open 1♠, partner responds 2♥, you jump to 3♠, and partner bids 3NT. You'd like to play 6♠ if partner has an ace. Jump to 5♣ to ask for aces. By the way, don't get greedy, 6NT is a crapshoot. If partner holds ♠x ♥Kxxxx ♦AQx ♣JTxx A club lead will defeat 6NT, but 6♠ is safe, because you can pitch your club loser on the third diamond before drawing trumps. Try to play your slams in a suit, you have more options in the play.5. If you ask for aces, and then follow up by asking for kings, you GUARANTEE that your side has all four aces. This is because 5NT commits you to the 6 level already, so asking for kings is a grand slam try. Partner is allowed to bid the grand slam without bothering to tell you how many kings he has. For example, you hold ♠xx ♥KQxx ♦AKQ JTx ♣x Partner opens 1♥, and you bid 2NT (Jacoby heart raise) because your hand is too strong for a splinter (you're going to try for slam even if partner has wastage in clubs). Partner now bids 4NT Blackwood. He has seized control of the auction, and you must answer, showing one ace (or 2 keycards plus the Queen if you prefer). Partner now bids 5NT, asking for kings. Half of the reason he does that is to tell you that all aces are accounted for, even if he has no intention of bidding the grand slam himself. Bid 7♥, don't tell him how many kings you have. Whatever losers partner has can be discarded on your diamonds. If you bid 6♥, showing two kings, partner will pass, being unwilling to undertake a grand slam missing two kings, and he won't be impressed by your caution when he sees your dummy. Partner held ♠AJTx ♥AJTxx ♦x ♣AQ J As usual, 7♥ is safer than 7NT, don't get greedy. To recap…aw forget it, just reread everything.

See ya next time.

I want to thank all of our members who will be attending our last 4th of July Regional in Deerfield Beach. We hope once again to make it successful. I am sure that everyone will notice how hard your Board members work morning through evening. Again, Steve Andrews and Carmela Knauer will be hosting the hospitality suite, a haven for food and friendship. Of course, other Board members will also be helping. As always, I am sure that everyone will notice Peggy  Muschett and Jean  Spector working tirelessly at a multitude of tasks. If you look quickly, you will see Keith Gellman running around every day co-ordinating the caddies and anything else he can find to do. It will also be nice to have Jo Anne  McDowell, Barbra Tate and Marge Pecoraro helping at the partnership desk where they will find compatible partners for all events.

Of course, Bill Rauld and Marty Robins will be making sure that the Hilton provided for us at their usual top level even though our Unit moves on to Bonaventure for our Regional in December 2014. Please feel free to email me ([email protected]) with any comments so that we may be fully prepared for December 2014 when we expect an even bigger turn-out with those “snowbirds” that our clubs are already missing.

Let’s all enjoy our bridge,

Jim Walker
